The Red Lion in Welwyn Hatfield

Visited with friend both ordered fish and chips - asked for the small portion (as we both thought a larger portion to much at lunchtime) to be told they only do a small portion with scampi. Other McMullen pubs offer small fish & chips so I suspect they are catering to to local business' so do not offer the small portion. That policy needs t change. When our food arrived my friends looked nice but mine was clelarly overcooked/burnt. Who knows it may even have been recooked/heated. On opening the fish up it was awful with hardly any fish inside. When I brought this to the attention of the waitress she agreed and changed it without quibble. They must have known the fish was not up to standrad so why serve it? They quickly brought a fresh piece of fish which was very nice however there were very few fries on both my plate and my friends and what there where were very minute. There was no choice on chips and it only came with fries. Again McMullens need to change this. The staff were very nice. At £16 for this meal it was not value for money conseuently I will not be going there again as it was over priced for what it was.

The pub restaurant wasn't too busy. The first waitress seemed new or less experienced and hadn't noted down our order. Food was OK but chicken and rib meal a bit dry. Lovely deserts

Asked for large white wine at £8 glass . Was charged for the more expensive wine at £11 pound a glass on bill .

Really nice experience, some of the food was a bit dry though.. the service was amazing. The waitress we had attended to everything we needed including extending the table, as hoc orders etc.

The refurb looks great but busy Sundays mean the staff are rushed off their feet. The food hasn’t been great for a while. Portions used to be good, but now a roast dinner with just 3 potatoes and very undercooked veg, carrots were practically raw. Bit disappointing tbh.

We’ve eaten here twice this month and used Oliver’s to hold a family funeral reception too. Food and service has been great every time especially by Natasha behind the bar at the funeral. Food is fresh and varied and the re-firn looks fab.

After refurbishment very relaxed atmosphere good design food overall is good but the Burgers is not the best quality ,patty is dry and not tasty for sure is frozen...

First visit after refurb. Surprised at the excellent standard of the meal and all staff amazing. Definitely a hidden gem. Well done all.

We went here for lunch on Boxing Day as part of a big party of about 20. I’m a little snobby with food but I was so impressed! The service from the moment we arrived to when we left was amazing, especially so as they were busy with multiple groups. We were never left waiting for drinks or for food to be served, tables to be cleared. The food was of a great standard, more than expected for when catering for the numbers they were. This is a gem of a venue!

We had a lovely family meal at the Red Lion pub in Hatfield on Boxing Day 23. They looked after us very well and were very accommodating for a wheelchair. So would definitely recommend them if you have a wheelchair ! They were and are very friendly. The starters, main and desserts were a good size portion. You did not come out of there hungry ! They made our family day a very relaxed and jolly family day.

Went in for dinner after a cold walk at Hatfield House. The pub was so cosy and the service was excellent from the waitresses there on the 27th of dec. They accommodated a large group of us including children. The food was lovely. I had a steak and ale pie which is a staple and you can't miss it. Thank you for such lovely service. We had a lovely dinner with friends.

Had a Sunday roast rotisserie chicken, my friend had hunters chicken... Not too long a wait, so that was a plus... But server was not particularly engaging, can understand being NYE that you might not want to be working but service with a genuine smile isn't much to ask. Anyway we didn't get a smile but was told we could walk over and get our cutlery ourselves (even though I'd watched another server get cutlery for their customers and were smiley). Anyway, my roast was great portions, looked good but was barely warm, bordering on cold. The Hunters Chicken was hot but pretty much a junior size and looked pathetically presented in the skillet. Not one of the best meals I've had in a McMullen pub.

Since being refurbished I can't complain about a thing lovely friendly staff great food

Had our family Christmas get together here , it was very busy and quite noisy but despite that , food was good service was excellent lovely people there , would go again

I had a very disagreeable experience at the Red Lion. We booked a Christmas meal weeks ahead but when we arrived we were seated at a makeshift table. I’m disabled and before our food was served, I told several staff that I was very uncomfortable where we were and asked if we could sit at one of the other (normal) empty tables. My polite request was rejected every time. As we had already prepaid our meal, we decided to stay. But the food was as bad as the service. The meat was dry, the bread stale and whilst my wife’s soup was thick, mine was absolutely watery and tasted of dishwater! And it was so loud! Despite all of this they forced a 10% tip on us, on an already overpriced meal! There are plenty of nice pubs in Hatfield, don’t waste your time at the Red Lion!

Well the food was great and the atmosphere was really fantastic. If you ever in Hatfiled and would like a pleasant time out, definitely good spot to attend. Just remember to book a table. The service was a bit slow, and we had a different waitress/waiter. I feel personally it is important to have the same person through out the night.

My wife and I went to red lion for Christmas dinner mid afternoon on Sunday. It was really busy. We were met and greeted immediately and after a quick drink at the bar we were seated. There were place names on the table with details of our pre orders. A great idea especially if you can't remember what a party member ordered. Table was festively decorated and already had appropriate sauces etc on the table. After a short time to get settled first course arrived. Very generous prawn Cocktail. Pleasant service and check back. Main meal was just as generous and fulfilling. Turkey was moist, veg was cooked well. The cheese and biscuits had a good variety of cheeses and biscuits served with grapes. Was always asked if we needed anything else when courses served. I had initially been a little concerned about service and wait times because a party of 42 had been seated before us. There was no need to worry at all. The team had everything under control. Well done team Red Lion. The pub has also recently been refurb and and it looks very good. I also noticed that the regular menu was also available, a good reflection on the kitchen. All in all a really pleasant afternoon celebrating Christmas at the red lion. Expect a return visit.

We have been visiting this pub for many years. It has recently had a refurb and the interior is lovely. The menu is simple but the food is cooked well. A great value Sunday roast! And love the 99 cones you can get for dessert!

Not the greatest. Sadly the food was clearly very average, a very long wait for the food which was, I’m afraid not great. Roast potatoes are supposed to be roasted and not white! We ordered and paid in advance so there is no exuse for that kind of wait. £23 per head is overpriced for this level of service and quality. To then be presented with a bill at the end for the “service charge” felt a little insulting. We did not pay. We did leave a tip for the waiter who was the saving grace of our evening. To end on a better note, have eaten here before and loved it, I would go again, but never with a large party that they clearly struggled with.

Booked a table for the Festive Menu. The food was OK, not great, the service was terrible. We ordered drinks which came in a reasonable amount of time, and the starters arrived soon afterwards. When the waitress served the starters, she asked if we would like more drinks, no idea why, as our glasses were still almost full. When the main course came, we still had the first course plates on the table, uncollected. To make matters worse, the waitress didn't even ask us what sauces/accompaniments we would like with the main meal - absolutely dreadful service. Again, we were asked if we would like more drinks..... Why? Usually have a pleasant meal here, we use this place often, but won't be returning any time soon.

Was in the area. Popped in and was presently surprised. Light, modern and clean decor. Friendly staff, great food. Wish this was my local.

Spent money on a recent upgrade which was ok. But the pub was totally unwelcoming in that it was an uncomfortably cold environment to relax in temperature wise. The open fire places are obviously just for show as were the the logs stacked beside them, maybe a cost cutting effort after the expense of the recent refurb!!! We intended to eat as a party of 6 but it was not at all inviting so we left (colder than when we arrived) after 20 mins. Shame really cos the pub is really nice inside. A pub that could be really cosy if they thought about their customers comfort.

I just been asked to return to the Red Lion to pay a bill they refunded because they’d overcharged me. When I explained it was inconvenient as the bill had been split between the other diners the manageress said I should be “grateful” as she had saved me £4. I have now had to pay for everyone’s meal. Not only was the manageress unapologetic she was rude to me and scathing as if the mistake was mine. They accepted it was their fault but we’re nasty about it. Not only that, but the first bill has not yet been refunded. Not good customer service - appalling!

We have eaten here numerous times as its a handy place to meet up with our family and you can never fault the food, it is always spot on. We went on Saturday night for a meal (the first time since the renovation) and it was so unbelievably loud, we couldn't hear a word each other was saying. We managed to get moved into the back area and as we walked past the people on the next table stopped us and asked how did you get moved? They had asked 3 times for the music to be turned down but to no avail. Even when moved it wasn't that much better. Whilst we understand there is a pub area to the Red Lion, the majority is restaurant and having background music whilst you eat, creates ambience and a great atmosphere but having it so loud is ridiculous. We would not return until they attempt to sort the noise level out as you cannot enjoy a meal shouting at each other.

Recently refurbished. Car park was full as the pub was packed out. So obviously very popular. Very noisy so it was difficult to have a proper conversation. The service was not great probably because it was busy but the food was very good

Popped here with some work colleages for dinner. Was busy so good atmosphere. We all enjoyed our food and service was fab. I had a few starters as my main.

Please note - the Red Lion in Hatfield is closed for renovations for 3 weeks from 16/10/2023 (which means it should reopen on the 6/11/23).

Fab local pub with great service and food, including a gluten free menu which included desserts, which is a rarity.

Visited for a private party, so didn't buy a meal. Spacious pub with plenty of outdoor seating. Friendly staff.

Firstly the food was lovely and service was great ,but the atmosphere was strange when i lived in the old town we used to come all the time and great atmosphere, sadly its gone , still a nice pub though but not relaxing and comfy any more

Went for breakfast with some friends. Cooked breakfast was poor quality. Bacon was hardly cooked, fried egg was solid and had to request another. This place used to be a good safe local option but recently has gone down hill. We won’t eat here any more.

Went with the family for evening meal we went for the Sunday roast the half chicken was lovely but the roasted potatoes was so hard couldn't even cut them and the veg was hard

Ottimo il cibo speciale il rostry sunday, birra guinness aromatizzata eccezionale, cordiali e simpatici i ragazzi che ci hanno servito. Il prezzo esiguo per quanto ordinato. Potete sempre provarlo per credere.

Thanks to The Red Lion manager stephen for making our night so special on my surprise Engagement back in July 23. Unfortunately I had reviewed previously due to poor service & disappointment. Stephen went above and beyond to put my complaint right and we accepted his kind apology. We were offered a voucher for another visit and very happy with the service we were given. We wanted to support local business for our date nights & it is a special night out for us, that we always look forward to. Staff were lovely. Food was excellent and service amazing. We had a great night & will be returning for our future anniversaries. Thank you very much Stephen. Rachel Hood.

Excellent night Saturday 19th August

We were a very big group (double b'day party), but service was still pretty good. Food however, was a little average - particularly the fish 'n chips, stake & ale pie, and the burger.

Had a lovely Friday lunch. Food and service were very good. Pub/ restaurant is very welcoming and homely and comfortable. I will be back again soon.

Had a great Sunday lunch experience at Red Lion 😃 Welcome and service excellent, lovely atmosphere. My sister had scampi, loved it, myself the light Rotisserie Chicken roast. All tasty especially potatoes and gravy Small tweaks: could do with more gravy on plate, though I’m sure they would have brought more if requested. Yorkshire’s need to be light and fluffy these were hard to cut and eat (as mentioned in other reviews) Tea and coffee’s fabulous Will be back!

Very disappointed only gammon and chicken available for a Sunday roast. Didn't expect that so early in the day. Minimum vegetables served and meat was dry. However, previously it has been good and excellent value for money so not sure what happened on this occasion.

Long wait for meal. Sunday roast was nice. Other meals were good. Staff not very attentive.

Popped in here after work with a few colleagues and it was a very nice place to be. Bar staff was friendly and very prompt. The food looked pretty nice aswell so shall be back to try it out for sure. Plenty of space, seating and parking, the pub is located in a great, central location aswell which is nice.

Enjoyed a nice burger and chips here for lunch after a long walk. The food was tasty (especially the chips) and came out promptly. The staff were attentive but seemed unimpressed when asked to fill up a water bottle with tap water before we left. There was a decent atmosphere inside, not too busy around 12:00-12:30 and had a nice cosy feel. Overall I’d still recommend going and checking it out.

Lovely calm atmosphere, sat outside in fresh air. Unfortunately I did have to wait quite a while before being served at the bar and had another customer served before me even though I had been waiting before them, however the staff are extremely polite and food comes out very quickly to a great standard. Seems a warm and friendly environment, would recommend for couples and families aiming for a calm and chilled out evening.

I went there twice, and I ate the same dish, fish and chips. My first visit was indoor and the food was really good. However, last time I was sitted outdoor, and there was a live music which was great, but my food was not really good.. The quality of fish was poor and there was too much oil on the fish. Overall, the place have a nice interior and good drinks.

Disappointing. Small portions, dry and lacking in flavour. Felt as though they were thrown together on the plates by someone with little care for food and flavour. If you need to fill a "hole" go for it, otherwise it's not somewhere to go for a decent, flavoursome well priced meal. You will leave hungry.

Fantastic service from Jack! We were so impressed. The food was delicious and arrived quickly. We went out to the garden afterwards and found supplies of free suncream and chilled water. The attention to detail was excellent. First class!

Under the effect of our wonderful visit in Hatfield Park we found this restaurant, 7-10 minutes walk from Hatfield station. A quit place, polite service, generous portion and good quality of food and service.

Great pub, really good value, and the food is brilliant. Generous portions and friendly staff. Christine is particularly nice and helpful. I'd recommend the rotisserie chicken, really special!

Visited on a Sunday 2 had scampi I had salmon waited over an hour all meals over cooked, so I couldn't eat Deducted cost for meals hopefully it's a one off

Food was very average nothing to write home about had better at other pubs with similar menu so a bit disappointed as been there a few times which were ok. Ordered red wine and the glass was horrible so had to request another glass which is really unacceptable. Not sure at present if would go back again.

The roast was tasteless, shame because the pub and service was amazing.

Met up with an old school friend here. We stayed for most of the day in their beer garden. We ate, we drunk, we laughed.

Fantastic staff, their GF menu is almost identical to their "normal" menu. Food fresh and hot.

Disappointing. Spur of the moment dinner out tonight and thought hubby and I would go to The Red Lion as previously had some nice meals here a few years back. Sadly not up to scratch tonight. We ordered the boneless chicken and Plant Steak. Both overcooked. Also Chicken no seasoning whatsoever and bland. If it wasn’t for the fact we’d already waited a good 30-40 mins we would have gone elsewhere. The only positive is the 2 ladies serving were friendly. Sadly don’t think we’ll bother returning

Standard McMullens pub, defo more on the restaurant side of the business. The food is pretty average (although almost every mac's pub food is). the booze is great, it tastes like the lines are regularly cleaned and looked after. Only downside I can see is just how long it takes to get served. when at the bar the staff take ages to even notice you, and when sat down the initial wait to have your order taken can be up to 10 minutes. Great place but if you're impatient I wouldn't recommend coming here.

I am beyond confused as to why this pub has such a high rating as the food and service was awful! Once ordered we waited almost 45 minutes for our meal which is an absolute disgrace. When the food eventually arrived from the kitchens and who knows what they did to it - it was practically cold! Following this I had food poisoning which I felt came over suddenly and I have come to the conclusion that my meal had been sitting on the side for too long in the open, increasing the level of bacteria. Luckily it was only macaroni cheese so it was not a deadly reaction. However I am appalled by this service and will never return ever again in my lifetime!!

Nice place to sit with an outside area and free parking. However the food wasmt great . The food came with a hair in. And I had steak and ale pie with mash potato pay £12 for powdered mash which hadn't been mixed properly and the gravy was slathered all over the food and was too salty and pretty much ruined The taste of the pie

The service was very slow, they sat me down and never came back for ages so I went to the bar to get my drink and to the front to pick up a menu. Roast was amazing 👏

Never had a bad meal here, staff are great and the food is too. Not expensive, for the quality I've seen in many visits over the years, it's a bargain dinner is a great setting. Stones throw from Hatfield station good for anyone to visit for a meal and a few drinks without the worry of driving home.

Love the sunday roasts here. Reasonable prices for good food in a clean friendly place. Advise you book as they do get busy.
