The White Horse in Welwyn Hatfield

After coming the other Sunday and having the most beautifully cooked gammon in apple and Turkey I decided to change my usual girls Wednesday night out to here for a change and what a great decision .we all had starters mains and desserts all looked and tasted lovely and the chefs special dessert we was offered was a real show stopper we will be back again soon . The staff all really friendly and very attentive and again 100% improvement to a couple of months ago thank-you for a really enjoyable evening

We had our wedding reception at the White Horse last week and it was lovely. Sarah was amazing during the whole process. The food was fantastic and cannot fault the level of customer service we received on our special day. Sarah and the team did a fantastic job of decorating the pub and ensuring everything went to plan. I would definitely recommend the white horse as a wedding reception venue.

A lovely looking pub but sadly they really messed up our order. When my lunch meal arrived it was not as described on the menu, and in general a really disappointing burger and about 7 over cooked chips. The guy serving us really didn’t seem too bothered and when we finally got our amended orders back, everything was cold. When it came to paying, the bills were wrong on three occasions. Take a bit of pride in what you’re serving paying customer.

Fantastic service by Kayleigh and Cameron. Definitely be coming back again. Would Recommend the Chicken Schnitzel

Very nice place ford drink and food food is fabulous also beautiful atmosphere specialist sit on the outside in the fresh air.

Our Wonderful Wedding! A big thank you to the White Horse Pub, management and staff for delivering a seamless wedding reception. The planning and preparation was effortless and collaborative, thank you Sarah Hadad and Mike. The food was great, service impeccable (Sarah, Luke and all!) and great attention to detail by the whole team. In the end a memorable day, which was great value for money. We wanted an informal, friendly, but beautiful environment, and The White Horse delivered in abundance. A great alternative to stuffy traditional wedding receptions!

Having previously eaten at the white horse on a couple of occasions it’s sad to see the service and food has declined so much…. I booked a table for my family (2 adults / 2 children) on Sunday 30th June for 1.15pm. First off service was slow (which normally wouldn’t be an issue) but the pub was only a 1/3rd full inside and only 2 other tables in the garden being used. Once our orders were taken the food took an age to arrive and when it did the 2 children’s starters were not what we had asked for. The waitress did notice this after about five minutes and said the chef had made a mistake. (These things happen) Then, whilst we were eating our starters the mains were brought to the table at which point we asked they be returned as we were still eating our starters. Once our main dishes did come out you could see that 2 of the 4 meals had just been kept under the hot plate as the beef for the roast was as tough as an old boot. After we raised this point fresh plates were made, however, the food was still really disappointing - ie veg under cooked, meat overcooked, cold Yorkshire pudding, etc. I expressed my disappointment to the waitress and manager and was told the chef is being difficult and the lack of service/poor food was due to them preparing for the England euro game which was in 3/4 hours time! I did get a main taken off the bill and 25% off one of the kids meals but it’s safe to say I won’t be returning to the white horse in the future……

Lovely evening at the White Horse, drinks and food were excellent. Our waitress Kayleigh was especially helpful and attentive. Will definitely be coming back soon.

This place is a great family and dog friendly pub, with a lovely atmosphere. Great planned events with the euros accommodating locals and new custom with supplying a bbq; Kayleigh and her team are very attentive and friendly with any needs or requests. I’ve had two lovely waitresses serve me a couple of times when I’ve been in there Ciara and Sophia. I’ve been at the weekend and in the week. Always been lovely. Supplied dog treats for the dogs. Been here with family and been to friends wedding reception here too which they excelled themselves

We recently visited this well run public house. Where we enjoyed good drinks, food and a marvellous atmosphere. Extremely well hosted by the mangeress Kayleigh who was very attentive and friendly to any of our requests. And our dog took a shine to her as well. Will definitely be coming back. Will most certainly be recommending to family and friends

Nice pup and staff. Food sadly came extremely late and, after multiple reminders. Food was also not hot, and we had to send it back.

We had a great family meal out, lovely food, good service and lovely atmosphere. Would definitely recommend to anyone. The curry, steak and kids meal was what we had with no regrets!

Lunch 26th May ( drinks at the table ) all good with 6 people having Sunday roast 4 people had been before 2 it was first time ( very very long wait for all our mains no starters or puddings taken Beef this time was tough over cooked Again everyone who asked for chicken ( no sage onion stuffing was on any one’s plate ( last time we visited we had to request this ( as missing but shows as part of this meal on menu The young girl was nice who served us all but £15 service charge for the time we waited ( only gave £5.00 ) Veg +gravy and Yorkshires all good Not sure if the kitchen were short on staff but people on a table again waited far too long for lunch and meals came up wrong ( the pub was busy “ most tables being used as football play off was being shown ( shame the food took so long as we took my Daughter and her boyfriend for first roast ( it was not on par with our previous visits ( would return but things need sorting quick Dining 15.15 pm x6 people from Ware Herts

Decent pub. Very friendly service. Not the biggest range of cask beer but well kept and cool. Really nice beer garden in the surprisingly warm weather. Ideal after a long country walk. Would come again for sure. Nice food especially starters and desert

A great hidden gem. Great Sunday roast. We went large and it beat us. Great venue and the staff made us feel liked we were valued locals. Disappointed we missed the disco the night before. We will be back for the £10 lunchtime meal and drink for sure!

Good food, good service in lovely surroundings.

We booked a table for a Sunday dinner at 5pm, we know this is quite late and didn’t expect everything that be available. Happily all meats were available and they were delicious. The food was fresh and didn’t taste like it had been there all day. I can honestly say, I was one of the best roasts I have had in a restaurant/pub. Just one criticism would be the sundae’s, they weren’t as good as expected. Unfortunately they didn’t have cream and weren’t built up as a sundae normally is with layers. The staff were delightful, very polite and friendly. I can truly recommend The White Horse, Old Welwyn, and will be back. Thank you for a lovely experience 😊

Had a lovely Sunday roast, with the most amazing flakey filo pastry as part of the vegetarian Wellington with all trimmings. Followed by an Eton mess, all 10/10. Cozy pub with good staff and atmosphere.

Beautiful evening - visited on an impromptu date night and had such a lovely time. Plenty of vegetarian options and the food was excellent, served piping hot and very fresh. Excellent service from the staff, including drink recommendations which did not disappoint!

Big family meal, great service and food

Went to the White Horse for our Christmas celebrations, with over 20 friends and colleagues. The food was pre-ordered from their festive menu. Given they were catering for a large group, the food was lovely and served warm.

I love the white horse, I think the staff are friendly, the food is great and the atmosphere is lovely, it is a great local pub. But, as someone else stated, Christmas Day was really poorly managed, and as a result we were left waiting on starters until 2:10, our booking was 12:45… we were not asked if we wanted anything in the meantime, and only got one round of drinks (no coffee/tea with dessert). I really want them to get that sorted, I had worried about Christmas Day, and going out instead of being at home and afraid I was right to worry. Please focus on managing tables as a priority, and managing the flow, you could really make it great, but until then I can’t recommend going there for an occasion.

The Xmas dinner was 3small roast potatoes,2 fin slices of carrot,2 fin slices of parsnip,2 small bit of turkey,,we paid for a full Xmas dinner,when we ask want happen to pigs in blankets,and the rest,was told she forgotten,plus waiting over a hour,and then told the table was booked for someone else,before we had our teas and coffees minices pies all which was ordered and paid for on line , from there Xmas menu,,

Absolutely awful... 1pm booking for our family christmas day .starters arrived at 2.30 after asking 3 times.... totally obvious they couldn't manage the bookings... and definitely not worth the cost !!!

Service was dreadful, staff did not have a clue on what they were doing, would not come here again. Staff did not intake guests dietary requirements and in the end, alot of people complained. Considering this “experience” exceeded £50, it is shocking to have to put this review on. Alot of guests are vegetarians, but yet they add ham sandwiches. Scones were rock hard, bread had paper on it. The manager started being rude to us when we started complaining. Furthermore, a day after us booking, we rang them up to add one more A and C, and when we got here on the day, they only had put us down for a table of three, without the added attendees. When we got there, we were told to wait as it wasn’t ready, and when we got in there, it took an astonishing hour to bring out food. The hot things were stone cold and as I stated earlier, scones were rock hard and burnt. The establishment had no substitution if you didn’t like tea. TL;DR: manager was rude, staff didn’t know what they were doing, just dont come here Edit after comment from establishment: Good evening, I have just read your response to the review that I put on, and I would like to clear some things up! “We weren't prepared for you to bring on extra people”: We rang up 3 times to clarify this with you put clearly its been ignored. “The extra people ate for free”: The adult was a vegetarian and did not eat anything due to ignorance of dietary requirements, and the child didn't like being inside so he was outside for most of the experience. Not being funny but the manager started stating in her voice and expressions that we were the issue. Not one to be rude but this experience was just shambolic.

My dad's local for a number of years the pub has seen some ownership changes but a recent visit confirmed the pub is in good hands. The menu selection is excellent and reasonably well priced and the evening set menu at £16 for two courses represents great value. With a good choice of beers lagers ciders and a friendly attentive service we will definitely be returning.

We visited the pub for my Father’s birthday. We should have clicked things weren’t as they should be when there were only two tables eating on a Saturday lunchtime - the first weekend after pay day! The service was extremely slow. Our table was booked at 12:00 and our main courses were served to us at 13:36 by which time our one year old was understandably getting fidgety! We had had starters in that time but the mains still shouldn’t have taken that long. At no point did the staff offer an explanation for the slow service, they just apologized. The waiter didn’t seem like he wanted to be there to be honest. The food was ok but nothing to shout about. Unfortunately we won’t be returning which is a shame as I had had a lovely experience there a couple of years ago when the pub was heaving!

Not at all happy. Such a pretty pub and great atmosphere. But the food was awful. Ordered Fish & Chips.I was presented with the most cheap, tasteless oven chips (worse in quality than the supermarket own brand around the corner (tesco), overcooked) and a spoon of plain peas. The fish was literally annihilated and over cooked and 80% batter/ grease. I was so disappointed. My father had the steak pie which was almost as bad. We just looked at each other and sighed. Probably the worst food I have ever encountered in any pub restaurant and needless to say will not be going back. Def go for drinks but not for food.

Attended the ‘launch’ of the new menu Waited at the bar 10 minutes to be served First menu choice not available Run out if Apple sauce for the pork starter I was told they realised they had run out of my main course selection as they were prepping it Wife’s food barely passable I didn’t eat !!! Service was excellent, but you pay for it in the service charge. Nicely decorated pub with a relaxed atmosphere. We had roast beef, which was very overcooked and tough. The small carrots had a weird hard skin with a soft centre. We also ordered cauliflower cheese, which was not very cheesy. Sticky toffee pudding was very nice. It's a shame the roast dinner was poor compared to other local pubs.

We had Sunday lunch. My husband had roast duo of chicken and beef. I had the vegan Wellington both came with assorted vegetables, roast potatos and Yorkshire puddings. We had crumble and custard and sticky toffee pudding for desert. Everything was perfectly cooked and very tasty. Service was prompt and friendly. Definitely recommend

Below par , such a mixed bag , pork belly cold and flabby , veg good apart from carrots which were basically raw , also not full menu as chicken was off and so was was the crackling as advertised with the pork . We waited a fair time for it to arrive, anyway honestly I’m not going back.

Last Saturday we held an 18th birthday party with the White Horse in their private hire room. April was very helpful in the organisational process, communication was easy and she catered to all our requests. The room was perfect, with the benefit of having the doors open into our own section of the garden on such a beautiful evening. We had a sharing buffet which was more than enough food for our 60+ guests. The food was excellent and well presented. We also had our own private section of the bar which worked well with our party. The pub arranged a DJ for us also. Would recommend the White Horse as a venue for a party, it’s a great venue and atmosphere and April was friendly, helpful and nothing was too much trouble. Thank you to April and the team, we had a great night!!!!

I haven’t been for a while but was really a let down. They we understaffed, only one person waitressing, bless her she was really nice and did her best. But it was the food that really poor. I actually wouldn’t go back or recommend it. Shame as the food used to be really good before

The most loveliest staff (and lovely roast dinner). My partner awfully collapsed in the pub and the team called an ambulance for my partner and were so amazing supporting me and my parter and his family so I wish I could give more than 5 stars because they were amazing and they even rang me afterwards to check I was okay. But the incident aside, the service and atmosphere was perfect and the decor inside was beautiful and the food was so yummy but thank you all so much for everything you did for me and my partner and family

Friendly and attentive service, though food could be better. Roast beef a bit tough and pie crust was underdone. Chips weren’t great but roast potatoes good. Mixed bag but bit underwhelming overall. Pricing is very reasonable and kids menu generous.

Not welcomed on arrival or given menus or told to order at bar. Staff too busy eating their lunch? Asked if main course was nut free...checked it was. Thankyou. Smoke alarm went off then food brought to table and vegetarian pie still totally cold in the middle and top burnt. Was returned and brought back hot 15 mins later, but no offer to recompense. Food being the right temperature is a health and safety issue. I see from reviews this has happened a few times...how can this be. Anyone trained to cook knows to check temp of food if reheating! Not impressed at all.

My girlfriend and I had a lovely Sunday Roast in here. Roast potatoes, green beans , cabbage and parsnips. With very good meats and very nicely cooked and presented. The inside of the pub is beautifully decorated and it has a great beer garden at the back. A little gem.

Came here with family and friends on Saturday for food and refreshments. The food was delicious and the staff were friendly and efficient. Scarlet and Charlotte went above and beyond to ensure our experience was good. Thank you especially Charlotte!

Pity such awful food as the pub and garden are nice. Burger was thin and burnt, lasagne tiny, burnt and obviously processed frozen food :( new chef required perhaps? In fact, friend sent the burger back

We’ve been here many times before and it has been great but wonder if it has changed hands. We had a roast which was ok but not great. The potatoes had that processed taste. The chicken roast was 2 little chicken thighs. The cauliflower cheese was almost non existent and was ordered as an extra. We were told that it came into the pub already prepared. it was so disappointing because it is such a lovely pub and we had always gone there for our Sunday roasts. Sadly we won’t be going back despite the fact the staff were lovely. The food just spoke of cutting corners and making profit.

Lovely relaxed atmosphere unfortunately food let it all down. One meal didn't arrive with others and in rush to get it out burger undercooked, chips soggy. Wrong pizza delivered. Table not cleared even though we finished sometime before leaving. No one in bar to talk about it on leaving. Can't be put down being busy very quiet Sunday lunchtime.

Stopped in for a pint during a ramble. Ice cold beer tasted really good! Great beer garden.

Nice looking pub and garden. Prawn and crab linguine £18.50 was luke warm and dried up. We were the only people being cooked for Saturday 1pm Should have guessed wouldn't be great.

Visited on a Sunday afternoon. Stood waiting at bar for over 10 minutes, people came after us were served before us. Was ignored when I objected. Atrocious service, "bar staff" are only able to pull one pint at a time

Such a shame as this place used to be great. Drinks needed reordering multiple times (not guaranteed to turn up .. it was only a couple of cokes), over an hour for the food to arrive and when it finally did there was a fly in the gravy. No apology. The food was burnt and way below average. The service was pretty off key as if tbh couldn’t really care less. Really great space, food and service needs a serious overhaul.

Not sure what happened if I'm honest. The pub was not really busy (we were the only ones in there at one point) and still service was extremely slow. The food order was incorrect and the cream in the dessert was off. It's such a delightful old pub, but it was probably one of the worst meals we've had out in years. Not sure if they were having an off day with staff shortages or whether this is a normal level of service. Someone did warn me not to have dinner, there but I ignored them and went anyway. Perhaps consider it a drinking pub and forget about the food. It's nice enough for a drink in such lovely surroundings.

The bar snacks were tasty and unique, I would definitely go again as its environment, was suitable for everyone , no matter the age and I’m definitely going to refer to friends and family !

Good quality meal with family. The restaurant space itself is not massive but there is a very large garden area. We were the only table in the restaurant which was odd but the bar area was very busy. Food was a very good standard and we would come back

Bit disappointed, booked for a work meal at 5.45. At no point during the booking process (2 weeks before the event) were we advised kitchen would be closed for pudding. Very casual all round.

Lovely pub, we sat in the bar area next to the fire. Very friendly staff. Burger was one of the best burgers I've ever had, will definitely be back. Chicken strips with chicken gravy were also amazing!

We had a really good time at the White Horse, which was much more covered in scaffolding than I was expecting. For that matter, I thought that they might have a car park so what do I know. We were, eventually, able to find somewhere to park in nearby streets. We were quite a large party, spread over three tables, so it is entirely reasonable that the food took a long time to come out. It did not help that we had been there an hour before it was decided that everyone who was likely to come had arrived and so we could order. While we were waiting, I looked at the light fittings (pic attached) and they reminded me a lot of rocket engines. I didn't ask whether they were or not. I have seen these reusing television programs, a lot of things end up as lamps. I also noticed that there was a massive beer garden with barbecue and pizza oven. I didn't actually go out there, but it is good to know. Top marks to the staff. They were brilliant. Evie was an absolute star. When a small child spectacularly vomited almost the complete way from the table to the toilets, they were right on cleaning it up and spraying the floor. When the vomit blocked the sinks in the ladies, they were right on it with the plumbing too. The food was brilliant. I have no idea why they didn't mention the egg in the mixed grill (pic attached) description as there definitely was one and was done to perfection. I know my mixed grills and that was a good one. I had a really good time. I would like to think that I would go back but, realistically, the lack of parking makes that unlikely.

Been hear a few times for meals over the last few years and been quite dissapointed . After hearing the white horse was under new management we thought we would try again . We was pleasantly surprised by the food , well priced and decent portion sizes. Can't falt the staff , especially our Waitress April who was happy , polite and couldn't be more helpful. Will defiantly be visiting again soon .

Visited the White Horse after seeing it has reopened under new management and was pleasantly surprised! There’s now a really nice atmosphere in the pub, a much wider choice of lagers available and staff were really helpful and polite. We didn’t eat but I overheard several customers saying how good the food was so am sure to return for a meal. And to top it off; they’re also showing the live sports! Well done the White Horse.

Our waitress April was really friendly and professional and checked in on how our food was. For dessert we had chocolate fudge cake and cookie dough which were really tasty and well presented. Standard prices for a pub and good quality home cooked food. Would highly recommend and will return again.

Wow this place has gone downhill... not sure if a one off day looking at the reviews from sunday but possibly the worst roast ive experienced. Plenty of other pubs to go to in the area, avoid this one like the plague imo as looking at the lack of accountability in the review responses they probably wont be changing their ways...

Our meal was very poor on Sunday - I have seen the other reviews about yesterdays poor food and have tried to email you but the email keeps bouncing back I’ve checked it’s correct and it is so maybe you could check your end. Also to say you are frustrated by our review is not appropriate especially as it’s backed up by other people’s reviews on yesterdays food .

Went it here today for a Sunday Roast. We waited an hour for the food to arrive and when it did we were served aunt Bessie potatoes, chewy beef and barely cooked chicken. Very disappointed, could not eat any of the food except from the Yorkshire pudding.

Very hit snd miss. Visited with family, some meals were OK some not so good. Chicken wings not cooked and cold in the middle but other 4 starters ok. Main meal, pie was ok but hardly any chips and gravy like water. Roast was ok, pork crackling but no crackling, roast potatoes hard in the middle, all veg was rock hard. Don't think we will be visiting again. Waitress was good but awful long wait between starter and main meal. We declined any desserts.

Arrived stood at bar watching staff have a chat, few minutes later came over and asked if we'd booked a table. Table was not ready so another staff member will take your drinks order. The flute glass for the prosecco was dirty with lip imprint...

Went here for Mother’s Day , 3 courses for just under £24 . Table was booked for 4.15 was not swatted till 4:30 . Starters took over an hour to come and we’re ok . Main course roast was terrible . Took over an hour...

Had a family meal in this pub which is under new management. Best pub Sunday roast dinner we have ever had at any pub. Welcoming staff & no service charge despite being a table of six! Definitely recommend.

Great service & wonderful food - best roast ever! I would recommend this place for food or just drinks.

Nice quality and good tasting roast BUT portions on each of our plates were uneven e.g 6 potatoes on one and 3 on another and very small amount of meat compared to other places. Did give extra when asked! Would have rated 4 star but the gravy was invisible like water! We didn’t even realise it was on the meal as it just looked like a tiny bit of meat juice! Asked for some gravy and they said “oh yeah you can have extra!” As if it was already there 😂 got a tiny pot between us and it was still sooo watery. Gravy makes a roast and deffo needs a thicker more flavoursome gravy in side pots as standard and it would be great and really make the meal!! Also roast dinner sauces should be standard e.g horseradish 💜 Service from staff was good :)
