Eggbuckland Fish & Chips in Plymouth

Great chippie years ago but I’ve had 3 or more rough meals in the last few months. Never again will my family ever go back . I ordered large fish and chips…. and charged for it. It was a bit under cooked and small and the chips were mainly little gribbles. It’s like they buy bags of cut offs with no bigger chips in there. Not for me I’m afraid.

I placed my order for 2x chips, 1x battered sausage and chips and 1x 6 chicken nuggets and chips. I stood by the window waiting and an elderly chap came in and placed an order for fish and chips. Upon my order being placed another 4 customers had placed orders after me and were waiting as food is cooked to order. The chap who ordered after me received his order and left and I could see the chicken nuggets were cooked and sat in the warming area. I asked the young girl when it would be ready as I had been waiting at least 20 minutes by this point to be told I’m doing it now. Why so long????? She started bagging up my order and was missing chips to be told apparently I only asked for 3 chips and not 4. By this point I had had enough and left with what she gave me. The staff are too busy faffing over the delivery orders and not about the customers stood in front of them. Terrible service and will not be Going back or recommending them to anybody.

Waited to long for our meal ,girls were on the phone to just eat customers instead of serving counter customers. Fish was wringing if dirty old oil! Batter was soggy and tasted of dirty oil . Chips were not chips just bits of potato . Been using this chip shop for over 15 years seen the owners come and go . If you want good fish and chips go the extra miles to get them I will not be using this chipy untill it has new owners.

we ordered food for 4 people, after nearly 2 hours the food hadn't arrived and when we tried calling, it was answered and the phone was just put on the side. we were able hear the staff taking more orders and just talking We finallly decided to get food elsewhere and when food finally turned up, we refused to take it and asked the delivery girl to take it back to the store, The delivery woman was nice and polite and we can't fault her. But the store needs to really work on its customer service while making sure people who order for delivery are told roughly how long it will take for delivery

Cold and tasteless . Staff are very polite and kind. Would never order again. First and last time food went in the bin. Waste of money

I have never met a more rude person in my entire life. I walked straight back out of this place and refused to give them my Money. I am so upset that I could be spoken to like that after asking “have you got anything vegetarian on the menu” disgusting behaviour. And awful place

Large Cod was very greassy. Chips were 50% crispy bits. This is the second time I have experienced the same problem. Maybe its time to go else where.

Normally would not fault this take away but not so good today. Large cod was perfect. Large chips was mainly Large crispy bits. Mushy peas cold.

Ordered 3 cod and portion of chips , which were almost stone cold and fish was greasy and batter not properly cooked .Waste of money never again.

We waiting in a queue outside for about 10 mins (which is perfect acceptable) only to be the next one in the shop to order- not greeted with a hello and then ignored while they did 4 other collections. It doesn’t take 2 mins to say hello and say they will be with you in 2 mins.... or write ‘2 cod and chips’ on an order paper.. shocking customer service.

I have ordered from here many times and enjoyed it every time. In terms of cost, they were closed due to isolating so ordered the same meal from the barbican. Here costs me £12.20 for two meals where the barbican meal costs £13..00 for one portion, in total it came to over £35.00 (including delivery). I feel the food from here was better than the expensive, small, overpriced version I received from the Barbican. Delivery times can be a wait but order early and avoid disappointment. I go no-where else now as there is no need.

Ordered food for a treat for a family tea. Ordered around 6.20pm told to expect delivery 7.25pm. 7.40pm past so we called up. Told it would arrive after 8.15pm. No apologies or resolution. Food turned up missing items and everything covered in gravy which had been poorly packed. Called the chip shop to ask for either missing items to be delivered or for a samll refund. The answer was no to both we cant refund you as the items are free. No they arent they are included as part of a meal. They arent free so we want recompense for the items we didnt recieve and for the damaged items. The lady we spoke to offered no apologies or refund and could no grasp that you should get what we paid for. We have now asked to speak to the owner. But no doubt we will probably never hear from them. Disgusting customer service. Wont be using them again

We ordered fish and chips for delivery from Eggbuckland chippy on a visit to Plymouth recently via the JustEat website as I was unable to contact them on the phone. The delivery took considerably longer than the estimate that JustEat provided - but given the Covid-19 situation, that wasn't unexpected and is understandable - just do be aware that the delivery time could be extended. When the meals arrived, they were okay. I had large fish and chips - the fish (cod) was huge and definitely lived up to the "large" epithet. The chips weren't bad. However, what was unacceptable was that the food was not hot - yes, it was warm, but I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a take-away that offers delivery to be able to deliver hot food, It was good value though. Additionally, my normal choice from a chip shop is place - Eggbuckland chippy do not seem to offer this option - the menu I saw only listed cod, haddock and scampi. Overall, I would probably use the chippy again if I was in the area - it deserves a second chance - but I wouldn't go out of my way to do so.

We love this chippy with the deals they do for families very reasonable and very tasty. Had it a few times and no complaints, friendly staff.

We ordered from Eggbuckland for delivery on a busy Saturday night, after a recommendation from family. What can I say? The most delicious fish and chips we have had in a long time! The fish was outstanding - thick flaky white cod fillets, and the batter was deliciously crisp. It was delivered on time, and piping hot. Not to mention incredible value for money. We will be back!

Popped in after a long drive to Plymouth. Fish was excellent - lightly cooked with a tasty batter. Chips were good too. A short wait, but that just means everything was fresh, so worth it. Would come again.

We thought we'd give Eggbuckland Chip shop a go as people seemed to think it had improved under new ownership. Compared to other local chippies this place does not measure up. Grubby, long wait times, relatively expensive and most of it went in the bin.

There is nearly always a queue. Staff are fine food is good. Normal F&C shop menu. Food cooked to order so be prepared to wait.

Sometimes, this fish and chip shop can serve up great meals - proper chips and crispy, battered fish but too often it falls short, as has happened again today, with greasy chips and lank, soggy batter. The portion sizes are all over the place too. There’s just no consistency. It all depends who’s serving at the time which can only be down to lack of care and/or training. I’ve noticed that some staff leave the food to drain, before wrapping up, whilst others take it straight from the fryer into the paper. At its best, I’d really recommend this place but at other times, such as today, it puts me off ever going again. Such a shame and it never used to be like this.

Fish & Chips were lovely but they charge an extra 50p for paying by card which was banned last year and actually illegal.

Pre-ordered a meal for two. Arrived at the designated time to find meals not ready and were advised we would have to wait another 15 minutes. Voiced that I didn't feel this was particularly acceptable (bearing in mind had just seen our fish dished up to someone else) and was dealt with in a very offish manner - basically told to shut up or put up - so got a refund and walked. Have used weekly for the past three months but will use no more.

We have used the Eggbuckland chippy for years through different owners and this new owners we were disappointed has the portions sizes were bad, so we look around Plymouth for another chippy and found some, but we went back to Eggbuckland Chippy in February and this was the third time we gave it another chance and glad we did, the owners have listen and the portion sizes have gone back to what they use to be, also the staff have a better attitude.So thank you Eggbuckland chippy and we are glad we are back

I’ve been going to this chippy for a year now and it gets better I love the staff and the food the quality is there and the curry sauce is amazing.. love it

Once again after visiting 4 times in the last 7-8 weeks there was a problem using the 2-3 different devices they use for the card machine! So 4 times I’ve been unable to use my card! Time the owner invested in a proper card machine and stop being so cheap!!!

I found them on Just Eat, A food order and Delivery or Collect site. They have been on it for years and to my knowledge never delivered? So why did they include "Order your food, Sit back and wait for us to deliver it". I have just checked and they have actually removed that part and removed the Delivery option. They have changed their site as last month? I checked Just Eat and they showed several Pasties so me and my neighbour went to get some. When we got there she was told "Sorry only 1 Small Steak Pasty left" We were both annoyed as We had wanted a Cheese and Onion and not many places sell them and this place is open late. So I will not use them again. On the Just Eat site people complained that they ordered food then went to collect it but they had to wait like anybody else despite having Pre-paid, (They had presumed that they would walk in and their order would be ready? If that was the case then I might consider going again, Until then I go for a Chinese

When you get there order your food then wait. All freshly cooked but you have to wait. Entertained by the chatter while you wait though.

We gave this chippy another chance as there was some new good reviews but also alot of people that said the portion sizes where getting better.

Lovely food ,good portions and food cooked to order so know it's freshly cooked, not been here for a while.but will definitely be returning soon

We've been using Eggbuckland Fish & Chip Shop for over 15 years with many owners. The one thing with this Fish & Chip you always got good service and a decent potion, but tonight we had large chips, reg chips mushy peas and curry sauce, but the portions sizes have reduce, a large portion of chip is now like the old regular chips and the regular chips have also been reduces, whether this is to save money and cut cost I don't know, but when you ask for a large portion of chips that's what you should get, so may be it's time to look for another chip shop in Plymouth.

First time visited in years and was pleased with the food and the portions but slow service. I appreciate everything is cooked to order and the end product is good but definitely need to speed up

I have visit the Eggbuckland Fish & Chips shop after a year .It was amazing , very good and fast service , big potions and so nice fish... is the best fish I had for ages .Congratulation to the new management

Everything was fine until I asked for CHIPS ! then all hell broke loose, eventually a bag of chips appeared 30 minutes later the sign on the wall says food cooked to order, might be a short wait! No organisation behind the counter. One person takes the order the other preps the food, it's not rocket science, just needs someone to manage it properly. Owner needs to read the reviews and take action, this shop is a goldmine if it's run as a fish and chip shop should be run. Disappointed

A very good service, but never seems to be open when we go. Could really do with staying open later in the evenings but the food we had was lovely.

Very impressed with improvements tonite in this longstanding fish and chip shop. Really amazing difference! Freshly cooked and generous portions of fish. Very friendly staff too. Efficient service. Will definitely be back on regular visits.

Good value for money meals especially the lunch time specials.Good variety of sea food cooked to perfection.

New management, new kit and possibly new staff. Nothing seems to be going right. The food is unpredictable, the quality and quantity poor. The response to recent detailed comments is that the equipment is new high tech and somehow difficult to control or handle. If the staff can't work the machinery or mix the batter or ensure proper portion sizes then why not set up a training session, even get the manufacturers to provide on site instruction? Things have got to improve at a time when there is high quality hot competition among chip shops on the Barbican and elsewhere. The Eggbuckland chip pie is falling far short and can't last as it is. If the chip shop shuts it will have a knock on effect on the pub and the community.

This USED to be a brilliant chippie; big portions, cooked to perfection but since the change of management things have been very hit and miss to say the least. We've been there three times since the change and there have been issues each time from dripping in fat chips and lank batter to wrong orders and small portions. I thought we'd give it a month or so before going back to try again, in the hope that things would settle down. Tried again this week and although there's been an improvement, the chip portion was half the size it used to be and tasteless and the fish, although quite well done, was on the small side. Plus it was disorganised with wrong orders being served and a general sense of chaos.Such a shame that an establishment can go from such high standards to mediocre overnight. I don't think we'll be going back anytime soon.What went wrong?

Second visit in the last few weeks since it has been under new management.It still seems to be opening for only part of the week.I love the new thin batter on the fish, but please keep it crispy.First time the chips were excellent, fish was average. Second visit chips seemed under cooked, fish was better but not 100%.Yes new staff, but I think you do need to up your game else people will stop visiting.

This is the second time we have bought Fish & Chips from this chippy since it has changed hands in early July 2016. The chips on the first visit were terrible, under cooked and bland. We did state this fact to the staff who stated that they were not happy with their supplier and are changing this. On the second visit, (12 Aug), the chips were just as bad if not worse. Will not be visiting again.

Bought fish and chips yesterday- fish was amazing in lovely crisp batter- chips were a little 'bitty' but would definitely go back again

Was looking forward to fish and chips this evening, after dropping by last Monday (18 July) to find them closed and about to re-open under new management. Well, I wish we could go back to years ago when this used to be a great chippy and even up to a year or so ago... but sadly it isn't any more.The fish and chips are very small portions... almost looked like they'd only given us half a piece of fish and it wasn't particularly thick. It wasn't just the one piece of fish... all 4 we had were the same. Hubby left half of his fish, so wasn't overly impressed. Chips tasted ok, but again quite a small portion... nothing like you used to get and also they were very "bitty". Only had a couple of chips that were any decent size so was just like eating scraps. Son had battered sausage and chips. There was only a very thin layer of batter on the sausage and didn't look very crunchy or appetising.Sorry Eggy, but all in all, very disappointing and won't be visiting again.

eggbuckland fish and chips I would say that they are the best in Plymouth,they are the same that I remember when I was a child the same lard that they fry with it,just great now I have been told that new owners are taken over,what a shame,i hope that they are just as good

POPPED in here one day for fish and chips ordered cod and chips portion of chips good but full of bits.And the fish was awful it was'nt cod it was grey in colour small flakes and tuff will never go back here again even if it is handy.THEY CHARGED £11 for 2 portions of each and we put it in the bin.

Your order is always cooked to order so you always get lovely fresh food. I always use just eat for ease more than anything and the girls there are fantastic with it, they are always so friendly and welcoming each time I order. Delicious food and fantastic portion sizes please don't change!

We have these as a naughty treat (too often!!) and have never had a bad experience in the past few years.The portion sizes are great, really good value for money.I don't eat fish, and I'm a little funny with sausages too, so I don't eat them, the other half likes the fish but 9/10 he will get the sausage and really likes it.I tend to get onion rings which are really tasty, or a veggie burger on its own- no bun, I couldn't physically eat it, I'd pop!! Unlike some places the veggie burger has bits of actual vegetables mixed in with it, it's not a bean burger style which a lot of places have. Their curry sauce is amazing. Staff are always really friendly.You can tell it's a great place by how busy it is, which can be frustrating when you're starving and you have to wait ages, but it's worth it! Would recommend to anyone to try it.Thanks :)

I will keep this short, the chips here are lovely, fluffy on the inside but crispy on the outside. None of the food we have had is greasy and is freshly cooked.The price you pay for this is often a long wait as they have a que for order, place the order and then get a ticket whilst it is cooked system. This process took 30 minutes last visit as it was quite busy but was worth it.

In a word inedible. Greasy soggy chips and the fish looked transparent as though it wasn't cooked. Threw it all in the bin, total waste of money. Horrid!

This is one of my weaknesses and my waistline shows it. This shop does not know the meaning of small portions. Oh my goodness a small portion us like enough to feed two. One of the best in the Southwest.

This is a popular fish and chip shop which I visit once or twice a month. I prefer haddock which is freshly cooked to order. Since the premises have been refurbished with new deep fat fryers, the food is prepared more quickly and to me the batter is crisper which is what I like!

Had a few recommendations that since new ownership, this place does really good fish and chips so gave it a try. The fish was nice and fresh tasting but the chips were very disappointing......tasted reheated and were dried up. Will go back to our usual fish and chip shop in future on the rare occasions we have them.

The chips are average, the fish needs review. The batter, the portion size and the resulting taste is all a let down. This place was a Salish bet if you needed a snack before of after the pub but this year it has been indifferent and a let down.

Wanted the fish and chips to be good as this shop is quite local for me.Girls behind the counter very friendly and welcoming.However I can only say that the fish was a small portion disguised by a thick batter which was crispy on the outside BUT soggy underneath which was very disappointing.The chips were very nice, not greasy and cooked well. However, as the fish was so bad I wouldn't bother going again and would drive to another which provides great Fish AND chips.Sorry guys but you need to re-think your thick batter!!!

The chips not fresh dried out boring. And cold... The staff wasn't welcoming either. The chips were very bitty they could have tried better.. No winners here..

We popped into the Eggie chippie for a bag of chips on the spur of the moment.'Large' with lots of salt and vinegar.BIG portions, great taste and friendly service.Give them a try.

Fancied a fish supper, went and ordered a very good value for money tea, £20.00 for four.overwhelmed by the delicious chips, but muchly disappointed by the fish.All batter and no fish.

What great fish n chips especially after a few ales at the pub nearby. Great service, wonderful quality fish and battered sausage. Lovely chips.

This place is by far my favorite chippy in Plymouth.I've had fish, sausages, pies, peas, curry sauce, onion rings and obviously chips and never had a bad thing to say. I've enjoyed every meal I've had from here. Even got a discount for liking on Facebook.The portion sizes are great always leaves me stuffed to popping point.I would thoroughly recommend to anyone and everyone.Not sure why they have got some negative reviews.

We have used this chip shop for years, and did so again last nightThe chips ( large portion ), together with my two battered sausages and my wife's cod were all freshly cooked in front of usThey were all delicious. I am fussy ( ask my wife!! ), about my chips and abhor the frozen variety. I adore proper well cooked chips, ideally in peanut oil ( but with so many people with allergies, these are almost impossible to buy now ).The sausages were great as was the fishI have read the recent reviews, but these do not match our own experience of this chip shop.

Disgusting chips and fish went in the bin after one mouthful, chips were full of oily grease and fat complete waste of £6.30

All I can say the people writing the good reviews are either friends or have been bribed. The chips are soggy with grease and the fish is just a no go area! I wouldn't recommend this place to an enemy

Under new management. Cooked fresh whilst you wait. Lots of chips. I reccomend the curry sauce. I live local so ideal for me.

Hauing had bad experiences before,was delighted to walk in to a clean sweet-smelling chippie at 4pm with great flavour chips and fresh sausage.Kelly and Claire are welcoming and keen to get to know their new customers. Many great offers and reasonable prices and family offers. Easy parking and access. I would say-DO give this a go.

I visit this chip shop on a fairly regular basis with my friend who lives in Eggbuckland. I haven't been for a while but went last night & was told there was new management. There were loads of chips which were lovely & although the fish was very tasty, it was the smallest portion I've ever had from a chippy. I once had fish & chips in Dartmouth & was served a portion the same size & the person serving said that's far too small & gave me another equal size portion to go with it!! I do hope this is a one off & next time I visit I get a normal size portion and not a kiddies size!!

This is the worst fish chips and mushy peas i have ever tasted. the fish was cold the batter soggy and chips were shrivelled up and luke warm. really really awful.

I have now tried this shop on 3 occasionsTHIS SHOP IS NOW UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT AND I HAD HIGH EXPECTATIONS!1st time the fish and chips were very crispy not bad all in all but a little greasy2nd time the fish and chips were awful, soggy batter and chips refried and chewy!! Maybe one off??3rd time after requesting crispy batter, the fish on the outside was crispy, however the batter was so thick the inside of it was still soggy but it was hiding the actual small piece of fish which was diabolical!!The ladies frying seemed very friendly, but, unless they get the basics right the shop will not stay open for long!!I would recommend that the fryers visit West Hoe Fryers, speak to Nick and ask how it is done properly, that way the residents of Eggbuckland would be guaranteed regulars in the future and have fish and chips cooked to perfection.

Have been coming here for years, when we've fancied a trip to the chippy. Portions are very generous, large pieces of fish cooked to perfection and the chips are of a high standard too. Great value if you fancy the chippy. Food prices have been reduced, so even better value for money! :)

I love this tucked away fish and chip shop in Eggbuckland and stop by for my take away lunch most Thurdays and really look forward to it. The fish is always well cooked with a lovely crisp batter, the chips too are of a high standard. The portions are very generous and extremely well priced. Jo (the boss lady) is always cheerful and very helpful. The first Monday evening in every month is a gluten free night which I believe is proving very successful and has a good number of regular customers. I thoroughly recommend it.

Really nice fish and chips. Just a shame they always seem to be shut They have reduced price to get more custom ! Maybe they should consider opening more often

I had been given a pointer to go to this fish and chip shop as it was supposedly amazing. Sadly it was truly awful. The portion size was very small, the chips looked like microwaved value ones and tasted horrible. The fish was accompanied by its skin which is never nice and looked like something that had been scraped off the floor. Got home and had to throw it away as it was that bad, went to Francine's instead which is in a different league and only cost £3 more for the family.

Had a wonderful fish and chips meal from here, pleasant helpful polite staff and really really good food. Would definitely recommend :)

Have been going here for years, nowhere else comes close, portions huge, really reasonable prices, gorgeous fresh fish, one of the few chippies that fry in dripping so tasty food! X do a special coeliac night on the first Monday of every month and its lovely, wish they had done it years ago!

My friend lives in Eggbuckland so when I visit we always have fish & chips from this chippy & I have to say they have always been really nice. The portions are always big & the staff are always friendly. It knocks spots of that awful chippy in Plympton (Kingfisher). I'd definitely recommend & would drive from Plympton to Eggbuckland if someone visited me & fancied fish & chips.

This fish and chip shop does great fish and chips and the staff are really friendly and its just across the road from the pub in Eggbuckland. Best F and C I've had in a long time.

Thought i would give them another try but wish i hadn't. The chips were only warm & looked awful, they were scrag ends the sausages werent much better. Will have to find another chippy. This lot must rely on pub opposite to keep going.

We have often used this chip shop before and now we are local. The staff were incredible friendly! And the food has always been really nice and fresh, with a range of choices for me and my boys. Staff were up for a chat and very friendly! I often advise people to try this chippy out and we are looking forward to our next meal from this lovely family run chip shop and maybe a sneaky pint across the road. Have stumbled in here from the pub. Very ordinary. Portions not great but prices average. Last time we came in the slightly older server was a good deal more courteous than the youngsters we had dealt with previously.

We use this chippy very rarely - when we can't be bothered to go to Perillas on Mutley Plain or West Park Fish and Chips - both of which are superb. The chips at Eggbuckland F&C are always a greasy, soggy, disappointng mess. Food hygiene rating is very good - food is well kept and premises are clean but the food itself is a let down. Such a shame, as I would love to use more often both to support local business and as location makes it far more convenient than other chippies.

This is by far the best chip shop within a 5 mile radius, the chips are always freshly cooked. I normally order a normal sized portion which is considered large in other chip shops, fish isn’t small either. Good chip shop that doesn’t charge over the odds.

Have come here for convenience after or during drinking at the Prince Maurice. Once after a funeral at Egg Buckland church. Basic, moderately reliable. Can be a bit slow and politeness and efficiency of the staff varies. Some perches on Walls nearby and historically we have been allowed to eat chips on the benches near the pub door.
