Durham Ox in Erewash

We visited today for Sunday lunch and we think this place is amazing. We were greeted and served by friendly and polite staff, they made us feel really welcome. 2 of us are coeliac so we need to have gluten free food, they were very knowledgeable about this. The food was delicious and really high quality. I would definitely recommend.

We had the most wonderful meal and dining experience here for a family celebration. The food was exceptional, we had 3 courses and each one was of the highest quality. We travelled from Leeds and we’d heard good things about Durham Ox and our time there surpassed all expectations. Fabulous and attentive staff. Hats off to the chef. We’ve dined at Michelin star restaurants all over and this was on par for quality and presentation. 100% recommended and hope to return in the future. Thank you, Durham Ox!

The food here is great as is the service and the decor The only thing that struck me to be a little disconcerting was that our waitress’s fingernails and make up didn’t conform to standard Food Hygiene rules- ie. fingernails kept short and unpainted and minimal face makeup Her nails had to be WELL OVER 1” long (not to mention the eyelashes )

Just outstanding. Everything you’d hope for from a pub lunch, but delivered to perfection. Have been doing a run of guide Michelin places with my partner, my 10yo has picked up a keen interest and so I told him we could give the Ox a try, as he properly loves steak. And so we all headed there for lunch today. Shared a couple of starters - deep fried prawns with Asian salad and deep fried goats cheese with hummus peas and mint iirc - and they were tremendous. Goats cheese, light and airy, beautiful flavours, and the peas (etc) worked superbly with it. Mains of ribeye (small man), duck (me), mushroom burger (partner) and again all of them were bang on. Small man said it’s the best steak he’s had, and the odd it he gave me was superb - melt in the mouth, good whack of chargrill, beautiful. Duck likewise! Service beyond superb throughout. Attentive, friendly, helpful. Chose not to bring the dogs, but offers some dog friendly tables 🏆 Really lovely experience, 100% would repeat.

Famous old hostelry is enormously popular. However it's not cheap. Sunday lunch at £25 is a bit steep. Delicious local roast beef. Delicious gravy/jus. Rather small Yorkshire pudding. The roast potatoes were rather hard and, although the vegetables were good - especially the honeyed carrots and cauliflower cheese - the portions were small and not really enough for two people. Marvellously retro Crepes Suzette rounded things off in style. When the ice cream hit the Grand Marnier it was sheer bliss. Attentive service from the young staff and dog friendly. The Ox is an old favourite for a treat.

This is a great spot. Went for our wedding anniversary. Super friendly service and the food was excellent. New menu yesterday and couldn’t fault it.

Enjoyable meal for 6 in the main bar area; our guests really liked the feel of the room...except for the musak, which should have been more background... so don't sit under the speaker in the corner.

Very good pub food. Not an overly extensive menu but everything was very well done.

On a really busy Friday evening the staff were really friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. The food was lovely and there were plenty of choices. It was just a really nice evening all round. Would definitely recommend. Lovely buzzing atmosphere and great food. Definitely worth a visit.

The pub is beautiful and the food was tasty, however the roast was on the expensive side and we found it fairly average. That being said the starter and the desert were very tasty. Only 3 stars for the service as we were not provided with a wine list (the wines are on a board on the wall but this was not visible from our table and we weren’t aware of it until we saw it when leaving) when I asked for a recommendation for a glass of wine, I was advised to go for the Malbec, which unbeknownst to me was the most expensive wine, coming in at £16 for a large glass and it was not a particularly nice. Besides this, the service was good.

Myself and my partner had a Sunday roast each here yesterday. We both had pork belly starter which was absolutely gorgeous and cannot be faulted. I had the roast beef lunch whilst my partner had the lamb. Both our dinners were nice but the roast potatoes felt like they’d been re-heated after being left standing for a while. I had a couple of Peroni’s and neither of us had desert but the bill still came to £97. The starters were £11 each and as I say, we couldn’t fault them but £25 for a roast dinner seems and was steep for the size of meal we received. They were tasty but I don’t think they were £25 tasty. The place itself is a nice setting and the atmosphere was decent, though.

Spent four nights on holiday in the area, and went to the Ox twice, once for Sunday lunch and once unbooked for evening meal. Excellent food both times, and staff friendly and welcoming.

The Chataubriand was delicious and the accompaniments lovely too. We asked for it to be cooked ‘medium’ and I was just a little too rare, but not enough to complain. I also thought that a simple rocket and parmigiana shavings side salad would be better suited than the ceaser salad it came with which was too overpowering. A lovely meal out though. I was too full for dessert!

When looking for a quality dining experience, the first place I think of is the Durham Ox, and our supper yesterday evening did not disappoint! We received a warm welcome and unobtrusive yet attentive service. There is a lovely wine selection (also by the glass) and delicious food! My friend and I were celebrating her birthday and enjoyed a wonderful fish platter, with the addition of Lobster Thermidor. Utterly scrumptious! I’m sad we didn’t have room for pudding but will certainly be returning. Keep up with the great service. It’s great to see Michael continuing to set the bar with his friendly and hospitable team.

Lovely country pub, and much more! Great traditional charm and brilliant food menus - with an amazing value set menu at lunch. We had a fab time, the staff were lovely, helpful. And we weren’t rushed, it was a lovely relaxed atmosphere. Would 100% visit again!

We have been before to The Durham Ox and we always enjoy it. This was a midweek lunch visit. Food generally good as are the surroundings and ambience. Staff good but a little rushed this time and could hear constant personal 'chats' near the kitchens. Fair price. One thing which I think does need looking at are the toilets which are dated and need attention. The gents urinals certainly need a refurb. However, overall nice surroundings and good food at a reasonable price.

Deeply disappointing evening having attended with old medical school friends from Edinburgh. Had booked the table well in advance and specified a table in the bar. Have been going to the Ox for nearly 40 years and in that time a fairly regular customer.Sadly was seated in the orangery. Maybe the answer is not to attend during the week and opt for the weekend?! If Paul had been in attendance this incident would never have happened ☹️ MP

6 of us went for Sunday lunch to celebrate my husband's birthday. Absolutely fantastic service, the staff couldn't do enough for us. There was a good choice on the menu and the food when it arrived was top notch. food was hot, well presented and full of flavour. I can't recommend this restaurant highly enough. A little gem in the heart of Ilkeston. No wonder you have to book early to get a table!

Had to wait over 1 hour between starter and main course, little bit on the noisy side. The sea food platter was not as good as the Jolly Fisherman’s platter at Craister.

We were very surprised at how busy it was for a Tuesday evening and did have to wait a bit before we were acknowledged and it did seem as though the lady could not find my booking but then we were shown to a lovely round table with very comfortable seats things improved rapidly, we were offered water and drinks and then given time to peruse the menu and special boards. The food was amazing and all three of us were very happy with our meals the service was also very good and very friendly with a bit of banter which we loved. We will definitely be returning in the not too distant future.

Sunday lunch for two, on our first visit. We were greeted and promptly taken to our table in the far room from the entrance. Sunday roasts and desserts were very good, as expected given the reviews. The room lacked the ambiance we saw walking to our table and then realising we were the only table for two with two larger family tables which made the occasion not so enjoyable with high noise levels. Unfortunate, and if we return we will ask for suitable seating.

Went with my husband for tapas. This restaurant sells out regularly on tapas evenings so booking is essential. The selection was decent, along with full bar service and wine list, All good is prepared by the chefs at the Durham Ox, reasonably priced for what is offered. Great service, tasty food, lots of choice. Look forward to the next tapas night.

Went for 10th year anniversary weekend, to which they fitted us in fairly last minute. Bar and waitress staff are so polite and the food amazing. How can you not go back. We had a great night

We enjoyed our sharing chateaubriand but the salad was tiny. Noone came to see if our food was ok Apart from that it was good.

This place is just amazing , it’s warm and welcoming and everyone is so attentive . As a coeliac it’s hard to find a reliable place that serves gluten free food without the worry of gluten contamination, never mind food of a high quality. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. The menus have a very good variety of food as well as gluten free options. I’ve been with my friend every month for the past year to the themed tapas nights and not once had a problem from being glutenated. The menus change according to the season so you always have new options to choose from . I can’t say I have a favourite dish as they all just taste amazing. Booking is an essential as it’s always fully booked which obviously speaks volumes. Roll on this months night out .

Lovely Sunday lunch, friendly efficient service.

Had an evening meal and brought my well behaved dog along. Unfortunately the dog area was shared by two couples with babies who were extremely noisy and distracting. The parents were oblivious to the disturbance being caused and even encouraged the kids. I think the staff should have intervened and said something. The Ox is one of our favourite places to eat so the experience will not deter us going back.

We had lunch at the Durham Ox in celebration of my wife's birthday - the menu choice was very good and the food excellent., A lovely country pub.

As an American I am quite fussy about getting a decent slice of pizza out. However I had the most amazing food and beautiful cocktails tonight in Pizza Punks Durham. Highly recommend the garlic bomb/Mac and cheese and Coconut mojitos!!!! All the pizzas looked amazing and would recommend whatever toppings you like. I had the birria beef which was lovely but they all looked delicious to be honest. It was a hard decision with all the choices. The service was above and beyond, everything was served quick, hot and delicious. Our waitress Toni deserves a raise for all her efforts. She was so lovely and helpful. You can't fault this place. They have great deals on as well that beat any takeaway. Try it! 😇😋

We enjoyed our visit to this pub - the shared seafood platter to start and the Chateaubriand to share for the main - all perfectly cooked and presented well with excellent service. The only slight minor issue was that the table we were sat on was too small for the shared platter board and the beef main board to be placed on but this was something of nothing and easily resolved and didn’t impact the overall enjoyment of the evening. This pub seemed like a thriving place and was very busy which really speaks for itself - we would not hesitate to recommend this restaurant to others - we found it a very pleasant and relaxing evening and the staff were all very friendly.

Am a regular visitor to the Ox. This was the best meal I can remember. Very enjoyable evening.

Always a great option for food in the Howardian Hills. The menu is varied and seasonal with plenty of variety for vegetarians and vegans. We always recommend to our guests staying at The Little Barn

The food was nice (not outstanding) but the service was slow. We ordered the chateaubriand medium but it was very well-done and we received it nearly an hour after ordering it. I also thought the portions of vegetables were small. My dessert was delivered without the ice cream it was supposed to come with and it was definitely a cake not a pudding as described!

All good except. One of our party was very disappointed with her meal. She ordered a side of new potatoes which came semi roasted in some kind of quite unpleasant oil. Also her egg was under-cooked. She felt that she should’ve been told that the potatoes were not plain, boiled potatoes. The rest of us were most happy with our meals. Staff were delightful and very helpful, as usual.

Not very #punkrock, music doesn’t fit the branding of pizza “punks” I mean you could at least get away with ska/2tone bands, even the more well known ones like Madness and the Specials or for actual punk bands the clash, the sex pistols, the Ramones or even bad religion instead of like David Bowie

I ordered a pizza through Uber eats app a week ago and they delivered the wrong pizza which the Uber driver informed me. I rang up and they were more than happy to offer a free voucher for a pizza, they took my details and said they would email. 2 days later I chased up the email and they said they would send it. I then rang up for the third time 5 days later and they asked me to email in with all the details regarding the order. A week later I still haven’t received anything. Not impressed with the customer service!

Great place for a pizza, amazing choice for every taste including vegan

Myself and my friend came for the late bottomless drinks and pizza and throughly enjoyed it, The value for money was fantastic! It’s very refreshing to have a bottomless brunch that actually feels almost bottomless, the selection of drinks are great and we were giving bottles where possible so that we didn’t need to keep asking for more drinks. The serves were all very attentive and lovely even when we stayed slightly after closing time to finish and wait for a lift. We will certainly be back My only niggle that’s not really a niggle is that there’s no rose wine on the bottomless menu and it’s a most!x

Fabulous menu and delicious food. The staff are attentive, helpful and friendly and nothing is too much trouble. I have dined here on numerous occasions and it has always been fantastic. The setting is really lovely too.

The service and atmosphere were great. Slight disappointment was You used to get bread, butter and houmous on the table, but now that is an additional charge. When your bill is nearly £360 for 4 people you’d think bread etc would be included.

It took a long time to get seated and order food. I had the Cubano and it had far too much mustard on to be edible. The staff were very good, but they did seem understaffed. The pizza dough base was very tasty.

I rarely ever leave a review for anywhere but I felt I had to for this place. I really wanted to enjoy it here but the service was terrible. We waited 1hr from sitting down to food on the table. It wasn't even busy either. Pizzas do not take long to cook at all. Thankfully the pizza was alright but jeeez service is horrendous. I'd recommend you go to Rudy's instead!

Food and service are excellent! The bottomless brunch is one of the best I've been to, always coming up to see if you want more drinks and prompt you when it's nearly the end of your time so you can get an extra round in!

It was very pleasant, just trying to be suitable, without being either too down-market, nor too nouvelle cuisine, or arty. It has decided what to do, and has the competence to do it well. I wish them well. They deserve to trade successfully.
