On arrival, 1.40pm we were greeted with the landlady In forming us that arrival was 2pm, however she did let us on after reminding us that check in was 2pm 4 or 5 times more. We were on pitch 3... seemed OK... until we found two lots of sloppy poo on our grass bit...mmm..there was also alot of broken glass on the pitch.... we were warned by fellow tourers that her two dogs were allowed to roam through out the pub and garden, which on arrival we were looking forward on using as the weather was good and had already decided what we would pre order food wise for the following day (weds) however making our way down the drive we were greated by two very excitable dachshund, now to us a dog friendly pub means you are able to take your dogs into the garden or pub....not so we have a 12 year old cross terrier who is quite reactive to dogs off the lead, our pug who is 9years isn't bothered so no problem. We made our way to the road side front of the pub to order drinks, hubby went in to be treated by said two dogs barking.... spilt the drinks on the way back to the table due to a door wedge to keep her dogs in...... we sat having our drinks and said land lady came out, we had already pointed out to her that we had a reactive dog and asked if dogs were under control when in the garden or pub, she answered... my dogs have the run of the place.... as it was hot she informed us that it would be cooler inside for our dogs, (we were sat at the front of the building in shade with our own water for them) we pointed out to her yet again that we couldn't take the dogs in as we had a dog that although would tolerate dogs on the lead would struggle with two dogs showing interest in her off the lead....her response was negative again... we then asked as we couldn't use the garden or pub to sit and eat a pre booked meal if we would be able to sit in front of the pub on one if the six tables which were there, No was the reply it gets a bit rowdy out here....seemed a bit odd, she then proceeded to tell us that although the football would be on she would most likely would be closed by 9pm... only opened at 4pm.... we walked back to our pitch a bit bewildered by what we had been told, our fellow tourers informed us they had received the same treatment and infirmed us of a pub 200 mtrs down the road which was dog friendly and did great food.... so the following evening we headed to said pub.... what a lovely welcome by all atmosphere and food was amazing on walking back to the site, we had to pass the front of the chequers pub, the reason became apparent then why we couldn't have eaten on the front of the pub, said landlady was sat as when we passed earlier with a bunch of men taking up all the tables. Hence the real reason for not being able to eat out the front of the building..... also felt very sorry for the Harris hawk which apart from sitting on a perch in 30° heat for most of the day and if not there perched or liying in its cage...we were ther three days never saw it in flight.....

What a wonderful experience this place was, we were booked on the site behind the pub with a group of fantastic friends 😀. The people running the pub and site could not have been more welcoming. The food on both nights was fantastic and as the previous pictures show, please remember though to order in time it's worth it. Lovely inside and brilliant beer garden. Would highly recommend a stop here both caravans and motorhomes are welcome and only 10 minutes from the M1 for peace and quiet 🤫. Would definitely recommend and will visit again. You’ve only got to look at the replies to criticism about this pub from the landlord and landlady of this place, to know that they shouldn’t be in this business. Very unwelcoming! They should hand the pub over to people who are customer focussed. Nip down the road to the Stanhope Arms and see how a proper pub SHOULD be run. We only nipped in here because the Stanhope was closed, but won’t ever come back - shockingly frosty landlady

Very unwelcoming. Landlady is definitely in the wrong job. Judging from other reviews, we are not on our own - shocking responses to criticism from both owners. The most unwelcoming pub I have ever been to. The landlady never smiled once. We were a family having a drink after a day of distributing our parent's ashes. She didn't know that but it was an important end to our busy day. My sister and her husband stayed in the garden in their motorhome so we all went back. It was an hour and fifteen minutes from my home. The website said you had to order food the day before and that they served 'posh coffee'. I went to the bar and asked for coffee (I was driving). The response was an inconvenience as she was busy at the bar. I didn't mind waiting but I did indeed wait. It came from somewhere else and was just left at the end of the bar. She shouted "coffee". No offer to bring it over even though it's a small pub. The coffee tasted mediocre and not even comparable with a cheap brand. Perhaps the machine needed cleaning or it was instant? I really wouldn't bother as we felt most unwelcome. I think if you're local you are fine, but I certainly didn't and wouldn't return. It's a shame because with all the reviews I've read, there are only rude and negative replies to the not-so-good reviews. Instead of being defensive, perhaps some thought-provoking changes in attitude would be energy and time well spent on improving the customer experience.

Called in for an evening drink when passing through the village as the outside is lovely and welcoming however once inside we were made to feel like intruders going into someone's sitting room. There were more dogs than at Crufts which is all very well if you like dogs but we didn't particularly want to compete for seats with them. Not a friendly place to go. Moved on to the other village pub which was completely different in atmosphere...like chalk and cheese.

A perfect village country pub... We stayed at the Chequers Inn on one of their five camper van and caravan pitches. Site facilities are good with gravel areas, bark parking areas and an area of grass with picnic table for each pitch. Each has electric hook-up, plus there is drinking water and waste water/chemical disposal. Toilets are at the rear of the pub and remain open all night. There are no showers, but we knew this in advance so knew what to expect (book via the Pitch-up website). What makes the stay so wonderful is the pub, the local villagers and the welcome given by everyone. Food and drink is first-class (pre-order evening meals before arrival) and a cosy evening is guaranteed. If you get the chance to see and meet Ken, even better! Highly recommended and we are sure to stay again!

Prices are modest considering the range of quality beers on offer and all are served at the recommended temperature's for the type of beers . dining is traditional British pub and Sunday dinners style and highly recommend , but might I add that you book ahead as with covid situation restrictions may still be in place at the time of this posting . Another amazing Sunday roast! We love eating here! Every time we get a delicious Sunday roast with 2 meats and selection of veg with all the trimmings. You need to book in advance but well worth it.

Felt welcomed the minute I walked through the door like I was a local to the pub, great personal and friendly service, and the food was great. I would certainly recommend.

Lovely intimate setting. Great service and fabulous food. Amazing gin section and cocktails too! We have been here several times over past few years and it La Rock ever fails to impress.
