Just stopped at the ‘food truck’ for a cup of tea while passing through Kielder but was tempted by some food as well. Excellent quality and the guys running it were extremely friendly. Sat out side on one of the picnic tables and had a nice break in the sun.

We visited Kielder Castle Café on two days at the beginning of September; I was revisiting Kielder, where I lived until I was 10. On the first day, I had a delicious and large cheese scone during the morning. We came back for a late lunch - lasagne for me and fish and chips for my husband. The next day we both had quiche for lunch. All the food was tasty and good value, and the staff friendly and efficient. The open fire was very welcome as it was a bit chilly outside. We were sorry that our stay near Kielder was so short, as we would have loved to return to sample some more lunches, and some of the cakes and puddings!

Hard, stale scone obviously sat out for hours/days. Dubious cream that seemed on the turn. I left it uneaten. I virtually never write reviews but I am sat here now writing this ‘live’, annoyed that I have paid so much for something rubbish that is so easy and cheap to delight the customer with. Stick to a pot of tea can’t go wrong.

We stopped here for a family lunch after a few hours cycling on the bikes rented from the shop next to the castle. The cafe served great food with quick, friendly service. There was a good range to choose from, both hot and cold, and a good selection of cakes and deserts. Food was delicious and eaten while watching the Osprey nest camera. It’s quite a small cafe so the seating was always full, but people were happy to share their tables and also moved on quickly to free up space.

A nice place to stop if cycling in the area , however we visited twice and had two very different experiences. On our first visit the bacon roles and hot drinks were quickly delivered and we enjoyed watching the many variety`s of birds feeding at the bird table our second visit was not so good we ordered some jacket potatoes and coffee`s. The drinks were swift but had to wait 30 minutes for the jacket potatoes even though there was only four other people in the restaurant. The waitress did apologise and admitted to forgetting about us !!! something we would of accepted if they had been busy but sadly the place was very quiet.

My wife and I have been in this cafe a couple of times whilst we were staying nearby during early November. The cafe serves a good selection of lunch and brunch options and some great cakes (Including a few gluten free ones) as well as hot, cold and alcoholic drinks. The cafe allows dogs inside the cafe as well as at picnic tables outside, which in November was great. (They have a towel to rub your dog down in the entry way if they are very wet or muddy like our Labrador was!)Service was friendly and quite quick, although being a November weekday outside of school holidays the cafe was fairly quiet.

I had a nice Full English in the Dukes Pantry, but oh dear, where's the atmosphere??The food was indeed good, service was fairly swift too and I was entertained by the view of the Ospreys on their nest on the flat screen monitor. The problem with the place is the lack of interaction between staff and customers. No smiles, no hearty welcome, no thanks for coming and not even a please call again. Maybe I'm old fashioned in expecting the service industry to feature these niceties but it really left me flat.A bit of background music and the fire on may take the chill off the otherwise luke warm atmosphere!

Came here around 2pm, it was busy but most people were finishing their lunch. We ordered a cheese roll and a cheese and ham toasty. After waiting over 30mins I went to ask where our food was...? Cue hushed discussion between the boy on the cash desk with the only adult on the premises where it became obvious our order had been misplaced. "It'll be two minutes" was the response. No apology or acknowledgement of us having waited longer than we ought to. The cheese roll did arrive in two minutes, it was about another five before the toasty turned up for my very unhappy 8 year old son. Our drinks were long since finished and I didn't feel inclined to hand over more cash to this place that treats it's customers so poorly. The food was ok, I prefer some butter or margarine in my sandwich. The latte had a weird sweet taste to it which was disconcerting.

My fiancé and I visited here after failing to find somewhere to have a quick bite to eat on a Sunday lunch time, that wasn't a big Sunday dinner. We were glad we did! We each had a can of soft drink, steak & ale pie and chips and a dessert for only £22. The steak & ale pie was only £7.95 and was the best home made pie we've had in a long time. The steak was tender and fell apart and the chips were lovely too. I had carrot cake for dessert which I was a little disappointed with as it had an overpowering banana flavour but my fiancé enjoyed his cream scone. We sat outside on a large picnic bench as it was sunny, and a friendly waitress brought our food out when it was ready. We will be back when we visit Kielder again.

My nephew (5) asked to write his name on one as he's been learning it at school so I let him and of course my son (3) also wanted one so I let him. The cook, owner can out of the kitchen and stared to shout at us saying"can you not let your kids write on them" we explained that we only give them one each, , then we got a lecture about someone would have payed money for them. I've never been spoken to like before I was totally taken back even my son said"shes not a very nice lady". We'll go to the pub over the road next hopefully it will be family friendly

If this review was based on the food I would give it 4 stars. However it's more about the place itself that could be improved. This cafe used to be in a different part of the castle (now an info centre) and they have moved the cafe into what was the gift shop. The only thing is it's still a gift shop so you are surrounded by tat. It is a bit warmer inside however and their is more seating so not an altogether bad move. A nice touch is a large flatscreen tv on the wall linked to an outdoor cam so that you can watch the local wildlife feeding while you do the same. Ordering is done at the counter and it's not the best way. Having to queue to order while a child is waiting to pay for a pencil sharpener with Kielder Castle written on it is irritating. A table service would be much better here. Diners are also expected to forage amongst the gifts for cutlery and condiments. They're all there but things could be better laid out.Prices are reasonable and the food is pretty good. Things like sausages appear to be locally sourced and portions are a reasonable size. To be fair this place has potential to be really good with very little effort. I am not put off by the shortcomings but would love to see these niggles addressed.

There was also a tempting selection of local ales but alas as we were riding we couldn't sample them, The setting was charming and a live on screen feed from the osprey's nest was spectacular, the cafe itself was spotlessly clean and was proudly and rightly displaying its 5 star food hygiene rating. The staff made us feel so welcome happy smiling faces and we did not have to wait long before our food came I would whole heartily recommend plants plus for lunch
