My favorite cinema in Brighton. Comfortable seats and decent audiovisuals. I just wish they showed older movies more often because 95% of the new movies that play there are trash. I love going to the cinema but it's so rare anything is playing that actually motivates me to spend my money, which is a shame really.

This is a chain cinema with an independent, very Brighton feel, with its enormous kitsch female legs in red and white stripey over-the-knee socks and black, high-heeled shoes tumbling overhead from the front roof entrance. This is why I don’t want to diss it. But my visit yesterday (incidentally to see the Korean film “Past Lives”, about which more in another review) felt a bit shabby. The downstairs cafe was dark, closed, and shuttered, which took me aback a little. There were no staff around. I then decided to take the lift upstairs. I went down a dark red walled corridor and took what was a fairly rickety and dark deserted lift upstairs, once stopping at a sort of goods room with no one in it - which was a surreal experience - a bit like being in a film noir! All of this was quite enjoyable - until I got to the ticket desk at the cafe upstairs. There was a long queue - I waited around 20 minutes for one staff member to serve everyone before me. The only other staff member in the building was checking tickets at the screen entrance door. I was then charged £21 for one film ticket, a soft drink, some kettle chips and a packet of Maltesers? Not an experience to be repeated - I think I need membership. But the tour de force was an auditorium that was decidedly stuffy and smelled of strong cheese. Is this the air conditioning others have remarked on at Dukes at Komedia? The whiff nearly put me off the movie. I couldn’t help thinking of the bright clean, fresh and airy atmosphere of Lewes Depot, Chichester New Park Cinema, or the Towner Cinema in Eastbourne. Not to mention any of the other chain cinemas I might visit in Brighton. And Dukes at Komedia needs more staff than two, to work three busy screens and a cafe, on a Thursday afternoon in the North Laine. I feel that if imaginatively programmed cinema chains like Picturehouse, which have recently opened even more of their cinemas in London, are to survive, they will need to better maintain their existing buildings and staff, especially in a place like Brighton, with its buzzy and vibrant local film scene. Personally, I am into screenwriting and have been to a few director/cast Q & As/screenings here as well. I would feel more encouraged to return if this improves.

This place attracts a certain type of person in a town that does the same. Arrived today to see a film with my partner, but I was in the row in front of her having been unable to get adjoining seats. Another visitor was in my seat for the same reason, and a further visitor had the ticket I needed. Between the four of us, and thanks to the decency of the woman who was viewing alone, it all worked out for the best and that's the sort of people who come to this place. The back row, on couches, with a holder for your drink, in the warmth of a small theatre, is one of the most relaxing places to be. I promptly fell asleep. It does not get better than this, it isn't even expensive. Good beer, good wine, good food, good employees, good clientele, great comfort. If it isn't showing what you want, wait until it is.

I feel really lucky to live in Brighton and be spoilt by 2 great cinemas (albeit the same company). Dukes at the Komedia has a very different feel to the original Dukes but is still a great venue. A good range of films and I like the sofa seating. The only real complaint is that the counter and cafe on the ground floor is so slow and always understaffed. Ordering a coffee there before a film is an ordeal - considering people are generally there to watch a film and the staff are aware of film timings (as they also sell the tickets) the snail pace they apply to making coffees verges on being a joke. Even when there is a long queue I have on a number of occasions seen a second member of staff just mooch around behind the counter rather than starting to serve. The upstairs bar is better and the staff there at least seem to understand that you are there to see a film! However staff are generally really friendly and seem to have a genuine interest in films.

The cinema is great if you don't order food, comfy seats and whatnot. Drink prices are extortionate, a medium watered down pepsi with loads of ice is about £3.60... how?! Ordered nachos and waited 25 minutes for them to come burnt AND cold with barely any cheese. We arrived 15 minutes early and got into the viewing 10 minutes late! They were ordered without jalapenos, alas came covered in them, but we were worried we might of had to wait another 25 mins for more nachos. Other than that, great cinema, really comfy and a good location.

Came here to watch live feed of Madame Butterfly. We have membership which makes tickets and food and drink affordable but otherwise I do think most things are overpriced here. Being a long production we decided to go for a bottle of white wine to share as being the best value but when I asked if they had anything to keep it cool, like a wine jacket or bucket I was practically laughed at, like what an absurd idea! Needless to say we didn’t order a bottle because on a hot June night it would have been undrinkable after the first glass. If they want to pretend they know about wine and change £25 plus for a bottle than I expect them to provide this for people when necessary and be a bit more educated as no one wants to drink warm white wine. Also they need to get some new sofas at the back as the seat had completely gone on the 2 seater we were on making it so soft and squishy it was difficult to get up off!

I used to go here and had not been for a while. It use to be a rare treat rather the manufactured cineworld type chains Walked in and music was so dreary for 30 minutes. It sounded like an old 80s punk band , but dreary with no content. I then went to buy a cake and coffee for two. The cost was oh my god....£13.30. On top of the expensive tickets it’s a relief film was good. The toilets were terrible. Wife said the women’s were smelly and in the gents in was the urinal that was like the type you get in temporary toilets. Stainless steel long trough where men go on each other’s streams So in summary , I no longer need to see it as a rare treat \. I can not justify the cost , it’s just not good enough.

Going upstairs we were told that the 4 drinks had to be the kids cartons - ok fine - and were then told no, we can't even have these as it's on a 'subject to availability' basis. Having checked their advertisement, where it does not state this, we got 4 cartons of juice. This was causing long queues with everyone having the same problem. We understand if the popcorn machine is broken but you need to offer an alternative as it is stated in your advert that it is included in the price & NOT subject to availability.

One of the best cinemas in Brighton and very central due to it's location in The Lanes. Lovely little cafe upstairs for soft drinks and bar drinks. Great cake, the Orange Polenta cake is a definite recommendation. The theatre seats are ultra comforatable. Worth being a member as you get a discount for GBK (next door) and in the cafe also.

I used to love going to the movies until loud, talking, knob heads started ruining it. Then along comes this cool place. So watching movies with fellow movie lovers on a sofa drinking beer, yes please. Fantastic.

We are regular cinema goers and love the charm of this little gem. The seats are very comfortable and if you get there early, make sure you ask for a sofa as they are cosy and spacious. You can also get a beer and they regularly go late showings of old films and series of films. The prices for the drinks and food are slightly at a premium as you would expect for the convenience. Limited number of films but then again it is a small cinema so it can't be as flexible me as the big boys.

... on the biggest screen imaginable. The Komedia is a super venue to catch latest, arts and classic films. Easy to find location in Gardner Street in the North Laines area. All seats have unrestricted views (we choose row D for a great view), are really comfortable and well spaced. There's even seats for two, for romantic movie moments. A good bar too, with a nice vibe for pre-film drinks and you can take your wine into the cinema - and the wine is served in real glasses, not plastic. Definitely ranks as my favourite cinema in Brighton.

The seats are nice but I couldn't get over the kind of people who I encountered there. In the bar there was lots of middle class pushy pushy when it was busy in the bar and a few rude visitors in the screen who thought it was ok to put their coat on me over the back of my seat.. Not the first time I've had this kind of experience at Cinema cities. Doesn't feel like an accessible place to all and a bit of an unfriendly crowd; aimed at the middle classes market really. Rather would see a film at home, less pushing that way :)

I'm not a big fan of going to the cinema, too big these days with too many people talking and munching their way through half a ton of popcorn that you can't enjoy the movie. Not this place, it's fairly small and cosy with some sofa style seats for couples. The cafe serve snakes and drinks (alcohol too) that you can take into the theatre to enjoy while you whatch the movie. Just seems that the people that use this place show a little more repeat the those around them so everyone can enjoy the experience. If like me you don't like large univiting cinemas, this could be the place for you.

Have enjoyed going to the cinema many times here! The quality of the viewing experience (including sound) has always been great, however we found that the sofa / couch seats were not that comfortable... so we won't be picking one of those in the future (individual seats are very comfy). The usual array of soft drinks and popcorn available, but sometimes its just nice when you can ask for a proper hot chocolate in a cup!
