Phenomenal 'Duke of Pork' - belly pork with stuffing and black pudding on mash with lots of lovely gravy and a rarely found steak and kidney pudding make a superb Friday night meal. We had a very enjoyable evening in this quirky but very traditional pub.

We went here for a meal on a Saturday evening we were expecting good things from the reviews etc But we ordered a steak and a special of Camembert! The steak was tasteless stringy tuf and inedible the chips were just frozen chips not even cooked to be crispy so soggy chips tasteless steak The Camembert was very ripe before they cooked it so was good but it came with 4 slices of a French stick and half a tomato some lettuce and two slices of cucumber!! That was a main course! Oh and a small pot of dip We then had pudding All supposed to be home made the amount of time we had to wait you would have thought they were making them we wish we hadn’t bothered the mars bar cheesecake was tasteless and the apple crumble was all soggy no crispy bits from the oven as it had been made in a microwave! We won’t be back It took ages to be served food awful ages for the bill which we took to the bar and had to stand around for ages as no one there Thanks but no thanks

For once in my life I really regret ordering fish and chips. That sounds like a bad start for this review but it is not. the fish and chips there are just to die for, wonderful fish cooked in a lovely batter and huge, there are two sizes to pick and I picked the large and was defeated. The reason I think infact I know I made a mistake was I wanted to order the Steak and Kidney suet pudding but was put off by the 30 minute waiting time. BIG MISTAKE , the table behind us ordered for the full table and what a superb pudding it was. I asked the guests how good it was and they said superb as evidenced by their clear plates. I love this pub and its one of our first choices when we visit the area. Great staff , great food and a real old fashioned pub. I am not a drinker but they have a great selection of ales and ciders on offer which the fishermen in the pub said were great. Loved the whitebait starter and my wife loved her gammon main. Overall a really super pub

My daughter and I visited on a recommendation on a Sunday evening. We planned to have a roast but they weren't serving anymore so decided on a steak. It was really awful and pretty inedible. The steak was tasteless and fatty, chips dry and seemed reheated and the peas grey! At £16+ for steak I definitely would have expected better. We left virtually all of the food. We decided not to complain and just wanted to leave. I felt the pub was very dirty too. Sorry to say I definitely would not return or recommend to anyone.

We were able to get a table for four at fairly short notice on a Friday night for four of us. The pork belly and rib came as a huge portion - tasty! Crab platter was good, kids' fish meals were slightly disappointingly basic (but my daughter was happy enough with it). Very much a locals' pub, apparently sometimes including Michael Morpurgo, but not unfriendly at all.

It has been a while unfortunately since I last visited my favourite ever pub,but at last returned on Saturday to find it exactly the same , unchanged & unspoilt. A truly amazing setting, the village fete was on, the green was being used for this as well as the village hall & the pub was the centre of the whole thing. Full of happiness, eating great food, enjoying pefect cask ales in a truly blissful setting. Well done The Duke of York, always worth the trip, never disappoints. I will certainly be back as my wife & my dog love it there to.

We visited this pub on recommendations and trip advisor reviews. It was definitely worth the 10 mile trip from where we were staying. We sat in the main bar, ordered fish and chips and the renowned steak and kidney pudding. This was definitely worth the wait. I still had room for pudding and was recommended the homemade mars bar cheesecake, which I thoroughly enjoyed. We shared our table with a couple and their friend who lived locally. We chatted for a good couple of hours and it was such a friendly atmosphere, made the last night of our holiday

If you look for the Duke of York in Winkleigh you won't find it, and that would be too bad. It's in Iddesleigh, not far away, next tothe church. Rated one of the top ten pub eateries in England, it is a real British experience in a 15th c building. We ordered four different things for lunch. All were very good, served well and without a long wait. Worth a detour, pet-friendly.

This was our second year to stop over while on route to Devon. And we were not disappointed. The welcome is friendly and laughs are abundant. Good rooms which are very comfortable, and great food for dinner and breakfast. Add this to the setting and it's a perfect place to visit, either for a drink, meal or overnight.

What a fantastic retreat, stayed just the one night but will definitely be back. The rooms are comfortable and very peaceful. No noise at all due to its remote location. The bar has a good selection of ales, all well kept! The menu is excellent and judging by what I could hear from other diners all the food is incredible. Due to it being a cold January evening I went for the 'famous steak & kidney pudding' and was so glad I did, for once the title was fully justified! Will definitely be back when next down in Devon. The restaurant is also pet friendly which although my dog was at home on this trip is a big plus point for me!

Our third visit in three months, and sure to be going back. Another beautiful day, so sat out again. Tried the famous steak and kidney pud, what a treat. Great portion size, stuffed to the gills with tender meat, no scrimping on the kidney, and lashings of gravy. Five veg on the side. Tuna baguette for the lady, and we shared an apple pie. Nice welcome again, convivial atmosphere in the bar. Ran a tab whilst sitting out in the garden. Lovely pub, lovely folks, most of all lovely grub. See you next month

We haven't been here for a few years having holidayed in other parts of the country but we decided to return to the area and one of the main reasons was to visit this truly excellent pub again!Little had changed (there were a lesser amount of specials on its famous Specials Board but that was about it.We were here during its Summer Beer Festival and as such were treated to several amazing beers all of which were well looked after. The food was still as good as ever, freshly prepared, well cooked, beautifully tasty and good value! We visited 3 times during our week!!!!

Now famous for it's connections to 'war horse' this rural pub is becoming very busy at weekends. The roast dinners are so wonderful that waiting for a table to become available is worth it. Great atmosphere in the bar where dogs are welcome. A great menu that changes regularly, delicious home made desserts and a childrens menu. A lovely traditional pub in the beautiful village of Iddesleigh. Reasonable prices too. We are regular diners and today 3 generations tucked in to Sunday lunch, chicken, beef or lamb ( not a dreaded carvery - waitress service ) veg. Perfectly cooked and gravy better than your Mothers. Highly recommended value for money.

In the middle of nowhere, the quiet village of Iddesleigh hosts this very typical old style English pub. Mainly locals and those in the know appreciate the welcome and ambience here. No frills, just good ales and cider and very good food. There is a beer garden to the rear and bench outside front which all adds to the atmosphere.Well worth a visit along country lanes. One word of caution - if you are tall like me, mind your head on the entrance door - ouch!!

Our first visit to this idyllic country pub. Had been recommended by a colleague of my wife some time ago. In the middle of the tiny village of Iddesleigh, we were warmly welcomed as we entered the bar. A beautiful day, and the publican recommended to beer garden out back. We took his advice and settled in for a lovely lunch. Veg lasagne for the lady and chilli nachos for me, followed by a shard bread and butter pudding. Range of ales rotate and pulled from the barrels lined up behind the bar. Tried one and then had a couple of pints of Sam's Poundhouse. Potent stuff, and made just a few miles from the pub in Winkleigh. So quiet in the garden, just the sounds of nature around. Will be back. There's a restaurant for more formal dining if you like, and accommodation too.

So up front I will say that I grew up in this pub, as in I lived there with my parents when they ran it, so it will always be special to me. That said I have also enjoyed it as an adult, the food is fantastic and there is always a great ale selection. The garden's not bad either :). A firm local favourite with good reason, this is a proper Devon pub, I encourage you to visit if you're in the area

Well let me tell you there's pudding and then there's pudding and I mean this in every sense.Supping on my first of what was to be many cask ales on offer I scanned down the abundant menu, as usual for someone who loves their food there were several dishes that yelled out to be ordered, but one of them had the word 'Famous' in it.That is either a cheeky marketing ploy I thought OR I could be in for a gastronomic treat. It was the latter, The Famous Steak and Kidney Pudding is indeed an epic triumph!Oh and when I say there's pudding what I also meant was that there is also pudding, you know, the sweet type, lots of them, deeelish!

This was not the first stay at the Duke of York, stayed there many times before over the years - nothing appears to have changed, the food is great, there's a good choice of Ales and the views of the countryside are wonderful. Good landlord, with a great sense of humour = looking forward to the next stay !

Firstly the booking that I'd made 2 weeks prior to our visit hadn't been recorded. Then there was (consequentially) a very long wait for food, slightly clumsy service & an incorrect food request taken. Average food, poor management wont return.

We have eaten here many times over the past 15 years or so, but went again recently to see how much it had changed with new ownership. The inside is just the same, a real old world pub, nothing fancy or smart about it. There is still a wide range of food on the menu and it is available all day. We went there about 3.30 to eat a main meal. The prices are not cheap but the food is average - good, without being fine dining. Waitress and bar staff friendly and helpful. The setting is the picturesque village of Iddesleigh (not Winkleigh).

A lovely old fashion county village pub just as you would expect to find in the remote part of Devon. The landlord and staff very friendly and welcoming. The menu has an excellent range from the standard Scampi and chips to Pheasant pie, something for everyone and its all well cooked and presented well. Not cheap but not expensive. Ideal place for a winter Sunday lunch but I expect its good for the summer as well. I recommend it

I visited the pub a couple of times recently, and ate in the bar both times. The food was good hearty English pub food...not gastro pub by any means, but nicely cooked and presented. The best part of this pub though are the friendly and welcoming staff. Even though this is without doubt a locals pub, I was made to feel very welcome. There was a good range of ales and ciders, and I love the fact that the bar has the feel of a real pub and not something dreamed up by Kirsty Alsop ( bless her). I'll definitely be back next time I'm in the area.

We had lunch here mid week early March, it was quite busy which is usually a good sign. We received a warm welcome from the staff. The menu is very extensive - not always a good sign. Two of our party ordered beer battered fish and chips and a third chose trout and I ordered belly pork. The three fish dishes were well received in general, but the peas were inedible as they had not been cooked. The belly pork came with chips and salad which I thought seemed slightly strange so I asked to have veg and potatoes. I probably should have stuck with the salad and chips, the meat was dry and chewy and not the typical slow roast belly pork dish that I had wrongly expected, not tender or succulent. Little things were missing from the whole experience, the bread arrived but there were no side plates and when the meals arrived, the chips were falling off the plates! All in all a mixed experience but I'm not keen to return.

It used to have lovely food here, but i think it must have changed ownership & lost a lot of its magic especially in the way of food, hence reheated roast potatoes with smoked haddock & a coupple of florettes of cauliflour & a piece of semi raw broccoli, for £11.00 , used old cutlery under the table , most unpleasant & overpriced partner had mixed grill for £15.00 per head & most dissapointing, liver was microwaved & saussages semi cooked ,chips were very good but you don't pay £15.00 for a bowl of chips, will not be bringing my family here again when they are down for easter, sorry but had to be honest

Having read other Tripadvisor reviews we chose this pub for lunch en route from Plymouth to Barnstaple. What a gorgeous old building with a thatched roof in a pretty location. We both had the lambs liver, bacon and onion gravy with a lovely selection of vegetables and it was absolutely delicious. Well cooked, piping hot and beautifully presented on square plates. There was an extensive food menu and for dessert we chose sticky toffee pudding and Bakewell tart with oodles of delicious custard. The local ale, served from a barrel rather than a hand pump was excellent too. Altogether it was a memorable lunch stop and I would heartily recommend the Duke of York.

After a long walk and, finding ourselves stranded one hot Monday afternoon outside the Coach and Horses, with no buses back for 3 hours and little chance of arranging a taxi we were “rescued” by Tina, who came to our aid. Not only did she arrange for a local taxi contact of hers to pick us up to go back to Clovelly but, despite the fact the pub was closed on Mondays, she opened the bar especially for us to have some refreshment before being picked up. What a lovely lady and we have no doubt when we are next down that way we will be stopping by to catch up.

WOW, we had the most amazing Sunday lunch. Roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, stuffing ball, peas, carrots, French beans, roast parsnips, cabbage, cauliflower cheese & not forgetting the amazing crispy roast potatoes and lashings of thick gravy. The meat, Yorkshire pudding & stuffing came on the plate, followed by a dish of 8 roasters and another dish with the 6 vegetables in & a big jug of gravy. I dont think anyone would be able to eat everything. The servings are huge. Everything is freshly cooked, served piping hot, it was just amazing. We ate as much as we could, but there was easily enough for another 3 or 4 servings. The landlord suggested taking it home with us, but we didn't. After a rest, we ordered apple crumble & custard. Again, the portion was huge. We could have shared 1, and it would have been enough. It's a shame we don't live here because we would be regulars.
