Stayed for one night, can’t fault it from start to finish. Staff very friendly and welcoming, showed us to our room which was awesome. It was spotlessly clean and very tastefully decorated, comfy bed and hot showers. We were travelling with our dog and this was no problem either, as there’s the bar area where dogs are allowed and the restaurant where they aren’t so you have a choice which is good because not everyone likes dogs around their feet! We ate in the evening, the food was freshly cooked and served with a smile, and the breakfast was excellent. Beautiful location in a quiet village but only a few miles away from Corbridge and just up the road around half an hour away is Newcastle. Views of the Tyne valley are lovely. Thanks for a lovely stay,we are regular visitors to Northumberland and really don’t know how we have missed this place before, we will return. Highly recommended.

We have been regular visitors at The Duke for many years, but had not been for some time, when we decided to go for dinner last Saturday night, 13 April 2024. Not expecting to be able to book a table the day before, we were surprised to find that there were most time slots available. On arrival at 6.30pm, there were a few people in the bar area, but no-one in the restaurant. We were a little concerned about this, but were shown to our table and enjoyed the views over the Tyne Valley while waiting for our food. It took about half an hour, but had obviously been freshly cooked and was piping hot. We both were delighted at our choices: mine was Crispy Garlic Chicken, which I unreservedly recommend, and my son had the Lamb with Dauphinoise potatoes and a selection of vegetables. Neither of us could fault our choices nor the bottle of Rioja to accompany our main courses. By the time we reached the dessert, the restaurant had filled up a bit more, but there were still empty tables. It was when we came to choose our desserts that we had a bit of a shock. All of the desserts, apart from ice cream, were £10 each. We both thought that this was excessive and rather spoilt the meal. We happily pay around £6 or £7 for a dessert in other restaurants, but had to settle for two scoops of ice cream each, at £2 per scoop, as we just didn't think that the choices on offer justified the £10 price tag. Whether this is putting other customers off as well, I don't know. Other than the chap who brought water to our table, but didn't pour it - we were advised that that isn't something they do!!! - the service was attentive but discreet. A few little tweaks could really make a difference here, but do not be put off by them if you want a really tasty main course in lovely surroundings!

I’m quite particular about my Sunday lunch and have an aversion to roast meat that appears to be almost “shaved” in slices. Thankfully this was not the case, my two slices of roast beef were thick slicked, pink and had some fat…..perfect for me, although I’m sure it could be served to your liking, on request. The veg selection was varied, fresh and well presented. The cauliflower cheese, from the extras was tasty too. The lunch service was busy, however the staff remained attentive and friendly. We all agreed it was probably the best Sunday lunch we’d experienced in Northumberland, other than at home of course 😊 It’s was my first visit, but won’t be my last.

we stayed at the hotel which was nice and expected the food to reflect the standard of the accommodation which it did not. It was pub food and lacked imagination, relying too heavily on pre prepared frozen food. The 'summer vegetable burger' was nothing more than a frozen burger and frozen fries. With a little imagination and effort from the chefs (and there seemed to be a lot of kitchen staff) this could be taken to another level. We cancelled our booking on the last night of our stay and went to Corrbridge to a small Italian called Ill Piccollo - chefs at the Duke of Wellington could learn a lot from them. The kitchen staff regularly congregate at the door below the deck area and it is not pleasant sitting there smelling cigarette smoke. A bit more management/attention to detail would help.

I have eaten here since it opened, but something seems to be going wrong now, last 2 times have been disappointing, on this, a lunch time, we were seated and presented with the a la carte menu and a tiny selection of ‘specials’, no 3 course fixed prix menu or the ‘Dukes Favourites’ menu which is what we actually went for ..I asked the server for the other menus to be told they no longer exist, to which I pointed out that the websites still advertised those menus and was told that it hasn’t been updated yet. So we choose from a limited and more costly menu. Interestingly, the couple on table next to us ordered 2 different starters only for the waiter to return to them after taking the order and inform them that neither was available, bearing in mind that there was already menu items ‘crossed’ off that day! Our food was average quality, but priced higher than it was worth and certainly considering the portion size..I payed £15 for a chicken Kiev, basket of fries and side leaf salad, my partner had fish & chips, fish was large but only of hand full of wedges and a ramekin of drying mushy peas which was around £14 if I recall. Sorry Duke, I used to love coming but sadly this is 2nd consecutive time now we have been fairly disappointed.

We ate here recently and the food was excellent. We all had Sunday lunch. I had the Northumberland lamb and it was delicious. Everyone else had the beef or chicken. This was followed by the cheeseboard which again was lovely.

We arrived with a 15 month baby and were warmly welcomed. We were giving a beautiful room. Booked a table in the restaurant for 7pm but went down at 6:30 and got seated straight away. Food was very nice. Husband loved his steak and baby ate all his mash, beans, chicken. Service was brilliant, very attentive.

Took my 96 year old mother here for her birthday. Firstly, the disabled access was excellent, being able to park off-road right outside the roadside entrance and wheel her straight through to the table, disabled toilets also very good and table space quite roomy. Secondly, the menu choice was perfect for the occasion; Xmas menu, bar food menu and a la carte menu to suit all members of the party. Finally, although the restaurant was quiet it had a warm, friendly atmosphere and the service was very good. Would definitely dine here again, as would my fussy mam!

We have recently had Sunday lunch at the Duke. The meals were excellent quality. We have roast beef and pork for the lunch perfectly cooked, very good selection of vegetables. Excellent, friendly staff who offered a good service.

We called in for a late lunch and unfortunately the food was very average and not to their previous standards. We werer also charged incorrectly (overcharged) when we got home and I checked thewebsite prices for our meals. I doubt if we'll return despite our having had very satisfactory meals and serfvice on all previous visits. Good bye Duke

It was a return visit after a gap of some years. It was mid week and the pub was quiet. The service was fine and the meal good. We will go back.

Small portions cooked badly, steak over cooked and the portions were simply a joke for the price charged

The service was very good and the staff excellent however our main course was ridiculously tiny. We both ordered the Lamb loin for £19.95. What we were given was 2 tiny squares of lamb about 1 inch square, 1 tiny baby carrot, 1 small sprig of broccolini and a tiny pie of shredded lamb a little over an inch in diameter. Could not make an issue at the time as we were in a large group for a friends birthday.

Great food, very friendly service from all staff - really helpful. Place was refurbished almost 10 years ago but you would think it was done up in the last year. Lots of nice touches and attention to detail. We were staying due to North East dog festival and thought it would be an OK weekend but staying here made it a really great break.

I stopped here with my husband before the GNR and had a lovely relaxing night. Room was lovely and spotless. Fantastic bath and comfy bed. Staff excellent and were able to offer breakfast early so that I could get to the metro in plenty of time. Bank foot it 20 mins drive away and perfect for GNR. Beautiful views.

The views from this pub over the dales below and the hills beyond are stunning and if the weather is right, eat outside on the decking to take in the scenery.

After a spur of a visit to hexam hubby announced he had heard of a local pub in Newton we could grab a bite to eat. What a find! Beautiful setting, plenty of parking and a lovely atmosphere as we entered the pub. It was after 2pm when we arrived so was pleased pub/restaurant were still serving food. I had chicken Kiev and hubby had fish and chips. Best Kiev I have had in a long long time. Fish and chips were excellent. Could not fault the service. Staff were attentive but not intrusive. Efficient and politeness.
