Duke Of Wellington in The Vale of Glamorgan

I opted to award 5 stars for every category because there are some aspects of the Duke that I absolutely love. Is it perfect? Obviously not, nowhere is, but whenever we are in Cowbridge we'll be heading to this lovely pub. It's got a fire going in the front bar, wobbly glass panes in the centuries old windows, dark wood all over the place, people drinking and eating there who clearly know each other and the staff there. It's got history and character in abundance. We've eaten there several times and will do so again. Is there any need for any further recommendation? We tend to eat in the bar, as near to the fire as we can get, but others like to eat in the large dining room at the back, both are lovely. The last time I was there I left my bag behind. When I realised I called them up, they'd found it and it was behind the bar for safekeeping. I picked it up the next day, nothing was missing and that's a fantastic testament to the staff and the people who drink in there.

Another great visit here. We were really looked after by the team and the food was great. Everything tasted so lovely and fresh. The team were really helpful when pointing in the right direction to chose meals that were suitable with allergies.

Absolutely fantastic service. And what a beautiful place. The staff were very friendly and so helpful. I do suffer with an allergy and the manager couldn’t do enough to make sure I was safe while dining. Everything came out hot and was so tasty. Everyone enjoyed their meals. We will be returning regularly

Cosy atmospheric pub and good food and drink

Booked for New Years day for 3 people. Arrived for 2.30pm. Got seated ordered 3 soft drinks. Got told no grill service, so no steaks. No kebabs and no fish and chips. Pretty poor effort for an establishment offering New Years day service. Then got told the lunch menu was nit available and to be honest what was left on the menu was less appealing to us. Waited 10 minute's for our drinks and then the next table ordered drinks. 5 min later their drinks were served. Felt that we were invisible and decided that there was total disrespect for us. So we decided to leave. Not one challenge when leaving. They were not exactly busy, which was no surprise. Needless to say we will.not be returning. If you can't provide a service you should not offer it, despite what day it is!

Good honest pub grub reasonably priced washed down with a good selection of beers. Relaxed atmosphere where you can go casual or dress up.

Wonderful Christmas Day. First experience of eating out on Christmas Day. Absolutely recommend this establishment. Food was fantastic and plenty of it, ambience lovely, staff were efficient and attentive and friendly. we had a very relaxed Christmas Day with no preparation, cooking or washing up, would definitely return. Thank you for helping us get through a tough day (after loosing my sister this year). Really appreciate all the hard working staff giving up their time on Christmas Day to make ours such an enjoyable day.

Unfortunately service was very poor as quite clearly lack of staff. Big parties in ballroom and pub. Meal was sub standard to normal.

Popped in for a beer before the next bus. We were greeted with a slightly busy, but cosy pub. I didn't get the name of the lad with the neck tats, or the lass with split-dye hair (which looked fab by the way) but they were both nice! Good couple of ales on, and a well poured Guinness!

Went to the Duke of Wellington for a nice meal with the family. Great choice of food and the beer was spot on

Just had a lovely kebab with a gorgeous flatbread at the Duke Of Wellington. Gotta say it’s the best I’ve had. Lovely atmosphere and the staff are so nice and welcoming.

It was my intention to go here lunchtime, but I saw the picture of Clarkson on the wall outside and rapidly decided to go elsewhere. No way that I’m spending money in a business that promotes that oaf! A response to the owners reply. Thanks for the offer of a free pint but no, sorry, I have principles. You promote Clarkson and I’ll drink elsewhere.

Superb lunch and great service.

We have been to the duke for a few drinks, a birthday meal and a date night. Each time we go my wife and I have a great time Kevin and the staff are accommodating, and the food is great.

Excellent value for money. Good service.

Lovely sections to choose seating, appreciated the waitress warning us to expect a delay on food. Returned a little later therefore. Ordering at the bar was slow but food came in an acceptable time, piping hot and delicious. Would recommend.

Myself, family and friends visited for a birthday meal. The food was amazing, and the team went above and beyond to make us very welcome. We were also showed there amazing banquet hall for functions! We will definitely be back

Fish & Chips gorgeous. Service good and friendly. Drinks extortionate, 250ml Savignon £11.25. What a pity, I am reluctant to go back.

We popped in here for some food as a group. The venue has a fantastic ambiance, and felt really pleasant. The service was really quick as was the food ordered. I had the burger which was fantastic and good value for money. Only one downside. A colleague was informed that a particular soup was on, only for a completely different soup to be brought out because the original had sold out. It would have been good to have the opportunity to ask the customer if they want the change and if for some reason it couldn’t be communicated then a little system to address this would be helpful. There was an immediate opportunity to take it back to the kitchen but we were in a relative rush. All in all a really nice experience and would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting (though I’d consider some of the pictures in the bathroom to be a bit off taste (but maybe I’m just becoming sensitive as I get older)).

Recently moved to the area with my family and so happy to find such a cosy family friendly local. The staff were polite and attentive and the prices weren’t bad at all for the quality of the food!

Basic food but gorgeous Cod & Chips, also excellent service. The price of the drinks "extortionate". So off-putting when paying £11.25 for a glass of wine.

Had a great time here on Sunday, amazing Sunday roast beef nice & pink, it was very busy but the team could not do enough. Chefs & kitchen team were great. Definitely recommend Sunday roast and will be back. Looking to book Christmas now.

Food order not delivered despite waiting for one hour, no explanation or apology

Here's a glowing review for that pub meal. Had an absolutely delightful meal at lunchtime! The atmosphere was cosy and welcoming, perfect for a relaxing meal. The staff were friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home from the moment we walked in. Highly recommend this place for anyone looking for a great meal and a wonderful evening out. Can't wait to visit again!

Christmas lunch for our family. The pub was understandably busy for Christmas Day. The maitre d' was keeping an eye on things, the young blonde man wearing a Christmas hat and serving us was delightful, the dark haired chap served with a side of compere good humour, the older guy wearing a Christmas jumper was jolly, the blonde waitress in black, Hannah, was sullen, bordering on rude, and slamming down items. The food was great, all three courses, the ambience excellent, overall super, thanks. We'd come again!

Lovely place! Plenty of options for sitting arrangements. Only negative was the Brownie Sundae was served with orange chocolate ice cream rather than normal chocolate as it's noted on the menu but it didn't damper the evening

A reasonable selection of plant-based food and reasonable prices. Good service, nice venue. I had the sweet potato & chickpea curry which was very tasty. I’m watching the old endothelium so didn’t have a dessert (although vegan option looked very good)! I requested coffee with oat milk prior to the meal but was told that they didn’t have any plant-based milk so I couldn’t have any. I had a cold drink instead. On paying I mentioned to the manager(?) that the meal was lovely but I would have liked a cup of oat or soya milk coffee with it. He said they don’t keep any on site as there’s not enough demand but he would have got me some oat milk from the local shop if he’d known. I hadn’t been there for a meal before. Was I supposed to have insisted to the waiter that they get me oat milk? Come on restaurant owners, have a bit of sense, if you’re offering vegan meals then offer plant-based coffee at the outset. I would have given it 4 stars instead of 3 if I'd had my coffee!

Shittest birthday meal I’ve ever had. Poor service, bar service was lousy, chef was also bringing the food out instead of a waiter or bar person. Asked for sweet potato fries but still got normal chips and was still charged for the extra price. Luckily I’m only just passing through, would never go back, not worth the £90 spent

Booked a table, what was the point? When we walked in we’re just pointed and told to sit wherever.. no menus given, no advice on protocol on how to order etc. Ordered starters and mains, starters weren’t cleared, only when mains were brought out, no check back, wasn’t asked if we needed anything else. £90 spent just leaves a really bitter taste in mouth. Food was awful, but no check back. Chef walked past in grey ‘whites’ going for a smoke outside the front with someone from the bar, great impression.

Came for lunch today with my partner, had the 2 course set menu, food was amazing, new landlord & his wife were very friendly, been coming here for years & glad to see they are having such an impact on the place. Tables were actually clean & what Veronica has done with the ladies toilet is amazing. Keep up the good work & I will see you soon!

Me and my friends decided to meet at the Duke of wellington and we was let down! Was greeted warmly by the manager kevin who was nothing but amazing while we was there, we decided to try the Sunday lunch, and it’s was one of the best roast dinners I’ve had in a long time and that opinion was shared by my friends, the beef was cooked to perfection, the gravy was flavoursom and our server Michelle was amazing, even after we finished our meal we was still treated exceptionally at the bar by Andy, overall the Duke of wellington is definetly my go to place in the area for the amazing food and outstanding staff and management the atmosphere was so nice and welcoming! Will be back again next Sunday 100%

We had a lovely time on table 11, it’s the best table in the house!!! Welcomed by Michelle, Cara and Tony who were all really friendly whilst working in such a busy restaurant. We were a party of four and had the Sunday Trio of roasts which was delicious! Desserts and coffees to follow, the chocolate fudge sundaes were massive! Toilets were fresh and clean and the front of the property looks like it’s had a good spruce up, more inviting for people who may not know the pub! It’s always been our favourite pub in our local area, lovely people, lovely food and welcomes dogs. Front part of this pub is lovely, open fire, really old bar and window seats to watch the world go by!

Family booked this for my brother’s birthday. We love Sunday lunch and it did not disappoint! The meat was succulent and the gravy was amazing, they even gave you more when asked! We loved the casual atmosphere as it allowed the 6 of us to talk and not get distracted by the staff. They were attentive enough to be on top of things but not too much to allow us to talk. Michelle needs a special mention for helping us at the end of the meal by having a nice chat about our meal too. Although we think we needed more veg and maybe a quicker greeting when we sat down for drinks, but these are just small things for a great overall meal.

Had a meal, if you can call it that, at these premises tonight. A lot of the menu was not available. I asked for chips with my sea bass and they were awful, frozen and had a nasty taste. 2 small pieces of sea bass, had bigger pieces for less money in tesco. I decided to have a pudding as I was really hungry by this point. When it came the custard was in a small pot but you could still see the lumps. I showed the waiter, he offered to change it, but by this time I was fed up, so declined. I haven't been to this place for over 40 years and won't be going back again in my lifetime. Wouldn't recommend this pub.

Good food generally good value service was generally good but could do with improvement, we had to ask for water, The tomato sauce was in a bottle that needed opening and we had to ask for extra bowl to serve our dessert. We had a 30% off voucher and I would certainly go again.

My wife and I were celebrating our Emerald (55!) Anniversary so we went to an old favourite- the Duke. Lovely friendly & helpful staff ( Jackie) and what a lovely meal especially my huge mixed grill having loads of tender meat (non vegan!). Good wine and a fabulous pint of Rev James. We were in the conservatory which was echoing from 3 loud patrons hence only 4 stars. Really enjoyed, thanks…

My friend & I had lunch there today and it was excellent. The service was really good and Jackie our waitress was so helpful and friendly. Good atmosphere, cosy and not too noisy.

We went there for early evening meal We both wanted bangers and mash but were told they were out if mash can you believe It seems that it’s all shrink wrapped so no chef involved just ping cookery I have to say that the manner of the girl behind the bar was very offend We will ot be returning

Lovely welcome from staff. Roast trio Sunday Lunch was absolutely delicious. The portion size was excellent and genius slices of mouthwatering, and melting, Beef,Pork and turkey. The Pork crackling was so tasty, crispy and tasted like real homemade crackling. It was a pleasure to my taste buds. I shall definitely be visiting again and will highly recommend to everyone. Thank you for a wonderful and memorable Sunday lunch.

Well, firstly the staff were, and always are, extremely polite and very accommodating, very professional and really friendly. The food was fantastic, we have recently been to another establishment which wasn't a patch on 'The Duke' and so returned with much relish. My wife and I had the roast beef, which was, as usual, delicious. My daughter had a cheese and bacon burger which disappeared with gusto. Due to my ever expanding girth I was advised not to have a pudding by her who must be obeyed. But next time I might perform a small rebellion! Thanks everyone at The Duke, we definitely won't be leaving it so long till next time.
