Duke of Sussex in Ashfield

RUDE staff, girl behind the bar refused to serve me. I came into the duke to have a drink & food with my friend, not expecting to be death stared by a worker, it’s unprofessional!!!!

The worst Sunday lunch ever. Frozen veg, powdered mash. Was cheap and nasty. Convenience food and not fresh. Will never go again for any of the menu.

Visited the duke today for a pint after a full day at work and to meet some friends, we decided to eat here myself and my partner ordered a mixed grill and my friends both had the gammon. The food was absolutely amazing and there was nothing bad I could say about it, highly recommend visiting here for some food! Will definitely eat here again ☺️x

The Duke is handily placed for the M1, easily found, about 5 minutes drive from Junction 28. It's very much a traditional pub, multi-roomed, and the sort of place where, in the bar at the front, you are likely to see locals playing cards or dominoes. One can't say that about many pubs these days. The pub appears to be owned/leased by Pentrich Ales of Ripley but, sadly, none of their cask ales was on the bar at the time of our visit, nevertheless there was a good selection of decent ales from other smaller, local breweries - my pint of Pheasantry Pale Ale went down very nicely. There is an extensive food menu with something for everyone - burgers, grills, various main means, 2 for 1 offers, sizzlers, Sunday roasts and so on. Although the food isn't quite top class, it's a decent four stars, portions are generous and prices are very reasonable. Staff are welcoming and friendly.

12 of us ate here and 12 terrible plates of food very very disappointed I had the steak baguette which to me looked like a half baked baguette no butter or salad on it just a bit of cut up cheap steak my wife had the ribs which looked disgusting slimy and greasy and the other 10 meals not much better

Kids screaming sponge Bob on the TV... steak pie was not a pie just fried beef with gravy and a burnt puff pasty top. Tasteless. And had to leave loads of it.

Very disappointed in our visit this evening. Arrived and sat at a table to be told someone else was sitting there, nothing on the table to suggest this. Had to take my glass back as it was dirty. Our food was not good. Chips undercooked inside but burnt on the outside, burnt crust on pie, gravy like water and veg dried up. Safe to say we won't be returning. It wasn't even busy.

I rang and booked a table a good while in advance, talking days. Arrived at the DOS in plenty of time. My brother was already waiting at the bar and had been for a good five minutes. No staff had acknowledged him. We were then barked at that they weren't serving food. We explained we'd booked a table. Lady told us to go find one. There were none and we were none the wiser as to whether or not we'd actually be getting any food. Decided to leave. Headed to The Boat Inn at Pinxton and their staff could not have been more accommodating. Don't take bookings if you cannot uphold them. And maybe take a course in customer service.

I came for a meal after work this week with friends. I have coeliac disease and enquired about them having a seperate fryer for their chips, after being told yes they have one I ordered a gluten free hunters chicken (1 out of 3 gfo options on the menu). My meal arrived with onion rings on top of my chicken, I asked to double check before eating if these were gluten free, good job I did as they were not so I explained I cannot eat the meal or I would be ill with cross contamination. I was then told I could not have chips after all. The person who took my order then came over to me and told me it was my fault due to communication even though I had clearly asked for a gluten free meal. Definitely not impressed and will not be ordering food from here again. You have a sign up about food allergies and intolerance so you should know about them before you make somebody ill.

Excellent food prob the best around Ashfield good customer service from behind the bar good value for money been 2 3 times now never failed to be a good meal. This pub is on point with prices matching the larger chain pubs with quality food

Went out for a meal on Saturday 2nd April with friends to duke. Everything we had was delicious. Hot! Served nicely! Checked everything was ok for us! And was very very reasonable pricewise. We will be going back soon! Thank you guys!

Popped in for a family meal as we thought, with lockdown, it may have improved Ordered 10 meals with the landlord, 9 came out ... young waitress was very apologetic when they eventually arrived Enquired avout dessert ... told a 4o minute wait ( for 4 cold desserts and one with custard!!) - so drove to King's mill farm and had a cake-away instead! Table and chairs were broken, toilet in ladies was not attached to floor and gents had urine over floor. Guess a leopard doesn't change its spots 🐆

This place used to be really good but has gone downhill fast. The Sunday roast was probably one of the worst we have ever had locally if not the worst. The place was empty and that should of been the warning to us as it used to be busy. It’s like they dont care and will just serve you up whatever. Won’t be long before this place closes done if it carries on like this which is a shame as in the right hands it could be a goldmine.

Fantastic service, the food is amazing as per usual, best place to come for a quiet meal with family, friends or couples.

We have just been for a beautiful meal here .. the barman was welcoming and friendly even though he was so busy .. the menu is varied and very reasonable prices .. the portions are generous.. we had the sharer platter and it was stunning and perfectly cooked .. we also had mixed grills which were the best we've had in a long time and on offer at £9.99 .. amazing value ... excellent quality meats cooked perfectly .. succulent and tasty with lots of extras ... amazing value and a delightful dinner can't wait to go again

Second visit to duke of sussex for food, came with partner and 2 children. Excellent food and ate on the eat out to help out scheme so bargain price at £11 including drinks for all 4 of us! Will definately be back again. Thank you for being so friendly and welcoming

We had the pie and chips which were amazing good value the pudding I had was syrup sponge and custard well it was the best pudding I’ve ever had, and eaten a few. The place was very clean and the staff really friendly. Can’t wait to go back.

We took our service users yesterday for a meal, can’t fault the service at all, the service users loved it, food was great, we was really looked after, we all can’t wait to go again, thankyou all for a lovely time 😊

Never been here before but went with a friend who had. Pleasantly surprised that there were things for wife & self as we are both vegetarians. Very impressed with the service and the food and will certainly be returning.

We were disappointed with some aspects. It should have been amazing - Christmas Day at a higher price. The fire wasn't switched on (artificial open fire) and the room was cold. The soup was ok but 2 out of 3 people didn't enjoy the pheasant pate starter. The halibut itself was nice but the veg (including an unusual cabbage mixture) were too watery, stuffing with beef (!) Was rock hard. Christmas pud ok. Just no atmosphere or special attention we had all anticipated. Oh and the toilet door didn't lock properly and toilets need refurb.

The potato & meat pie , the top was puffed pastry when the menu I’m sure said short crust , the filling was the most disgusting undercooked gristly flavorless meat I have ever tased served in a thin tasteless gravy, with overcooked peas, to be fair the chips were excellent. Gin and tonic served without ice and 2pts and a vodka & coke returned twice due to flat coke ,having returned it once flat why do the same again. Too say the meal was a complete disappointment would be a understatement

This being our local pub for many years, always been lovely, we visited for my daughter’s 18 to finish our night off. Some had food made by the lovely Sheila who’s food is beautiful. Nev brought a few drinks for my daughter as did a few locals. Fab night had by all. Yesterday Saturday 21st December, my 18 year old visited to have food with her friend as she loves the food, to be asked for Id before even ordering, ( she had her driving licence) she said they only came for food but because her friend was only 17 they was asked to leave as they needed a responsible adult! It was 4.30 pm and the place was empty. I don’t like writing bad reviews but this has infuriated me!! She’s 18 and legally an adult.

I honestly can not speak highly enough never will I go to another chain pub again! This place offers real homely cooked food and let me say it is fantastic, (none of that microwave chicken) a 9.99 meal had plenty of Scampi large pice of steak and a butterfly chicken with home made chunky chips, the mixed grill is a hefty meal also lots of food guaranteed not to go hungry and the staff are lovely! Friendly and welcoming atmosphere! I will say you won't be disappointed I certainly wasn't..

Visited this place having not been in Kirkby before, had a quick google and found the Duke of Sussex with the hope of being served some proper pub grub. Was not disappointed! I had a chicken burger (Sutton) and the girlfriend has a beef (Square i believe its called?). Food was brilliant and fresh. Man behind the bar was more than helpful (albeit it was a very quiet afternoon). Would definitely visit again. Only slight criticism i would have is that the skin on fries tasted really sweet..sort of like dinky donuts.

I play in a band and was looking for a local venue to hold a charity night and Daryl was only too happy to help and accommodate us in any way he could. The place was packed through and everyone had a fantastic night. Have been to this pub plenty of times both eating and socialising and always had a great time. Can't recommend any higher

We visited this pub late on a Friday evening. The owner was very helpful. Daryl behind the bar was friendly and welcoming. Charming place.

You'd be forgiven for walking or driving past the Duke of Sussex and not even giving it a second glance. On our first visit we looked through the window and wasn't inspired... but hunger won amd we ventured in.A great selection of drinks and food. We selected foord from the 2 for £12 selection (2x lasagne one meat one veggie) They arrived after an expected 25 minutes and mmmm mmmm. Really tasty and the chips are just like those homemade ones my nanna used to fry.Give the place a try. It's really welcoming and almost 5 star. (The barman just needs to be a little friendlier and similar friendliness when bringing food amd removing plates. Checking if food is ok really is worth that extra star)

Decided to stop here as not been since new menu was made. After a 40 minute wait our food arrived! Who calls seasonal veg 'tinned peas and carrots? Mashed potatoes looked like they were thrown on, table not cleaned from previous people, not asked how meal was, only thing we were told was one of the chefs had rung in not well! THEN PUT A SIGN ON BAR OR INFORM CUSTOMERS OF THE DELAY IN RECEIVING THEIR FOOD BEFORE THEY ORDER! Also note to chef, look up what seasonal veg are in September, I think you will be surprised that tinned peas and carrots are not on the list! Shame as the pie was quite nice, I had the lamb and mint, but the crust was just like a piece of cardboard! I won't be returning.

Had the steak pie, which is not a pie but a dish of meat with a crust on top. Says seasonal veg, all I got was tinned peas plus my 11 chips. Opted for a desert chef's crumble, think this was a frozen one heated up in a microwave and wasn't crumbly at all but a soggy lump, the table nxt to us remained uncleaned with food on the floor not a good experience for us i have to say, the food was hot and to be fair the chips were good.

Thought we’d give this place a try for dinner. Monday night so was not expecting much, but sat outside first for a lovely drink with fantastic views. Then inside where it is clean, tidy and welcoming for food. Great menu with very reasonable prices. Drinks not too expensive too. Did not have to wait too long for food which was nice and hot and very well presented. Also does a kids menu for reasonable price too. Highly recommend for some laid back food. We will definitely return.

We decided on the Duke of Sussex after calling in another pub where we didn't fancy eating. We opted for meals off the two for £12 menu and were definitely not disappointed. I chose the pie of the day which was meat and potato which was absolutely delicious and full of chunks of meat that melted in the mouth. My other half chose the Chile con carne which he enjoyed but was full of food envy when he saw my meal. Can't wait to go back and try something else.

What a gem!!! Wasn't planning on visiting this place. Was recommended by another establishment after they had finished serving food.Wow! Great location, plenty of parking, very friendly staff. The choice of food is fantastic, plenty to choose from and so tasty. Fresh, home cooked food. Superb value for money. Would definitely recommend and will be going back. Good idea to book as gets busy.

came here on sunday, we had a kids meal two steak and onion baguettes and creamy garlic stilton mushrooms, the food was beautiful steak cooked to perfection. compliments to the chefs ed and sheila. we always have a good laugh here the bar staff nev and daryl always make us feel welcome. the waitress Georgia cleared our tables and and was lovely. will defiantly return.x

Whether it is the noise from children running round the place or the bar man bellowing at customers - ear defenders are a must.There is a good choice of food on offer at competitive prices but where prices are cut so is quality.The food is average and nothing of any real note except the spectacularly small portions of coleslaw served on the plate - 1 teaspoon in a small pot is an insult, never mind a waste of time!!You get what you pay for and that should be remembered if you visit here.

The children’s menu was fantastic the amount they were served with was massive Had a singer on that night which rounded off the fabulous day Thank you to all the staff nothing was to much trouble for them and to serve nigh on 20 of us all at the same time was fantastic I can honestly say a lot of us will definitely be visiting soon

booked a table for six last night it was awful service was the worst i have ever had, never came to us to say sorry for not getting our food out to us, we arrived at 6.30 got starters at 7.30, waited another good hour to more for the main food. people were getting up an walking out.i think you need to learn to tell customers the waiting time, or at least have the guts to come over and apologize or be bothered tosorry not for me..

Have visited this lovely pub before and we celebrated dad's 70th and the staff were fantastic very accommodating great atmosphere really nicely decorated and the food coming out looked amazing will definitely be going again

Ok, so this was always our favourite pub with home cooked food. This changed hands and the owners tried to make it into something it wasn't. Prices increased and the food was awful. Now i can only assume more new people have taken over and the food is GREAT. Had 3 meals here in the last month and all have been lovely. Back to home cooked chips which make the world of difference to a meal rather than nasty frozen chips. You do have to wait a little while but when it is fresh, who cares!! Thank you for making this our best pub again.

This place used to be brilliant for food, times have changed. Visited here on Saturday night and the food was awful, I asked for the steak to be cooked rare and it came out well done, it had so much gristle in it I couldn’t even cut it with a steak knife, the pork was so dry and over cooked it was inedible, the black pudding was also way too over cooked and I left this too. Basically I paid for a mixed grill and ate the chips and sausage, waitress didn’t seem to care. Definitely won’t be going back.

been here a few times to eat normally love it unfortunately last nights meal was dreadful.homecooked chips looked and tasted like they were cooked last week and then put in the fryer and left there way to long the fish was dry the homemade beer batter(ha ha)was awlful.how that meal left the kitchen looking like that i will never know.i wish now i had complained when they put it in front of me but i hoped it would taste better than it looked but unfortunately it didnt.there was four of us altogether and none of us enjoyed our meals.i waited for a staff member to clear our table away and i was going to mention it to them but after an hour waiting after we had finished our meal we gave up waiting and left.but we should have realised that they were not going to clear the table has the tables on both sides of us were uncleared when we sat down and still uncleared when we left.the pub wasnt busy the bar staff were too busy talking at the other side of the bar.certainly wont be coming back till you have a new chef and new bar staff very disapointed has this is our local pub and certainly wont be recomending it like i have done in the past

Been here a few times since new management took over, the place is so much cleaner, atmosphere is much nicer, food always piping hot and very nice, nice staff, and reasonable prices

I wrote a review back in August and couldn't speak more highly of this place. 5 stars without hsadow of a doubt. We decided to go back for our anniversary meal last night at 7pm as this was the place to be guaranteed a good quality meal. It was busy when we arrived but got a table straight away started looking through the menus and all I heard was the girl behind the bar bad mouthing the place that they are rushed of their feet , she hadn't had a break all day, the chief was utter rubbish to put it politely anyway we decided to order non the less after the girl had seen us looking at the menus for a good mins egg to be told sorry were not serving any more food tonight. You can guess my disappointment levels at this point. Sadly we won't be visiting her again 0 stars this time.

We used to visit regualry before the last managment took over, we returned this evening after hearing about the new managers taken over and we could not of been happier with they have done with the place! We will be back soon!

What can I say, this place has undergone a massive transformation since the new management has taken over. Efficient service and great food. Proper pub grub at a decent price - 2 meals for £10. Will be back.

Came in for a family meal, not one table that didn't have a couple of mm worth of sticky on them. I wouldn't mind but we asked for the table to be cleared. That doesn't just mean removing plates, it means wiping them down. Nothing worse than not wanting to touch the table you are supposed to be eating at.

Called in with another couple first time in years. Staff were great much friendly than over the road. Bit disappointed with the food. And they had no mixed grills. But friendly atmosphere good around vibe. Definitely visit again.

Has been on my to do list for a while as heard good things, particularly about the home cooked chips so took a stroll from huthwaite over the hill with a friend to sample the 2 for £10 menu. With a pint and a pint of coke plus gammon pineapple chips and peas and a lasagne garlic ciabatta and salad it came to £15 odd. Absolute bargain! Staff very friendly and food was tasty, freshly cooked and a bargain price. There was a lovely patio area with little bulb lighting overlooking the rookery park over the hill so would be lovely to enjoy a pint after a walk early evening. We also spied board games you could play too and a decent specials board so definitely be back to check both out another time. A real local gem of a place; nice to not have the loud music, tons of kids and huge menu but just a decent pint, home cooked food and friendly staff in a clean quiet cozy pub (or am I just starting to get old?)

We had a superb freshly prepared family meal today, the kids loved the homemade fish fingers and chips. I had steak pie which was delish! My husband had fish and chips and said they were the best he's ever had. Friendly staff, welcoming atmosphere, clean and cosy. We have returned twice more this week, thanks so much my son now eats lamb after tasting my lamb shank on our second visit. Would recommend to anyone.

Visited here with my partner and 2 year old son along with some friends. Very friendly atmosphere, made to feel welcome with young family. The menu was fab the food and prices were excellent and as for the child's meal well it's the best we have ever experienced ordered fish finger which were fresh fish in batter excellent value and very fresh. Will defo be visiting here again and again.

Very disappointed with food. Fist visit and won’t be visiting again. Yorkshire puddings looked good but had been reheated and had gone soggy, meat was like leather , mash was yellow and watery , all in all very unpleasant experience.

Been here a few time now, can’t beat two meals for £10 it’s worth it just for the chips. They have a lovely outside area to, friendly staff and and lovely grub

We had Sunday dinners and mac’n’cheesesSunday dinners were ok. Meat done well, veg just right, Yorkshire pud a little over done but tasted ok.Then we found two pieces of very sharp hard plastic in the Mac and cheese. Table staff were perfectly polite and handled situation well.In seeking refund for the plastic riddled meal we encountered the manager who can only be described as rude, unprofessional and deeply unpleasant. Someone who clearly dislikes their job as much as he does should look for other work.Came here on recommendation but given the attitude of the manager will not be returning

Poor service, uncleared tables, butt ends everywhere outside. Bar staff would rather be talking than serving. Not friendly, like you've put them out and it's too much trouble to serve you! Such a same, this place could be so much better.

Went to this pub tonight , waited a hour and a half for food no apology, only ordered scampi and a balti , table next to us waited aswell they got offered a drink for waiting , we didn't !!! People next to us waited longer than us they asked for their money back , will not be recommending this pub to anyone , worst service I have ever had , it wasn't even busy . Very poor .

Met up with friends for drinks in the sunshine, they have a dig so we sat in patio area. A good welcome at the bar for drinks. We then saw the menu & decided to stay for tea. Great little 2 for £10 menu with homemade chips. Steak & ale pie all homemade, fish n chips, great batter & southern fried chicken & side salad also very good. Will return. Thank You

Having moved to the area recently we have been a few times now. We had had a few meals here now even Christmas dinner. The food is good dont go expecting gourmet you will be disappointed. Its great for nipping out for lunch or for your tea, You certainly get plenty. The only down side is it can be slow getting a drink from the bar, If you can cope with that definatly give it a try. I dont thing you will be sorry. If you like beers they do a few different ones.

It may have taken months... in fact as long as Steve and the team have been presiding over the Duke; but we finally found a suitable date and time for my parents to join us for dinner at the DoS.Welcomed warmly, as always, and late coming parents arrived shortly after - beers on table and order placed. Simple and effective.Food arrived promptly, just as more beer settled, and was presented very well. Plates are just the right size, portions are generous but not over facing and the quality of product and cooking is simply exceptional. Nothing was left (save for my partner’s sweet chilli jam) and more beer than we anticipated for was imbibed gratefully - the only thing I can complain about is having to live more than walking distance from the bar!Priced well within anyone’s budget, it seemed a shame not to get a round in for a team that puts so much in - Steve’s is usually an Amstel to my knowledge and J enjoys the craft cans!All in, four of us with drinks left replete and happy in the knowledge they also serve lunch.See you soon team.

Visited for a meal, first time for a while. Food good, nice surroundings but unfortunately didnt appreciate the piano playing!!

This restaurant has just changed hands a short time ago and may I say for the better. Nice friendly staff, clean surroundings and the food is to die for. We had a party of 6, didn't have to Waite long for our order. Every meal we had came up piping hot and even looked appetising. As well as their normal menu they had a specials as well. Fantastic food all round, comes highly recommended. Will definitely visit this venue again. Loved it

Visited today, although the renovations have made the place look better they were severely under staffed resulting in us waiting an hour for our food only after complaining to the barmaid who didnt even apologise. We also noticed this to be a common theme with other tables too complaining about the wait, however credit to the only waitress she was clearly swamped and did apologise when we finally received our food. Overall average meal and has potential although I wouldn’t recommend until they sort their staffing issue out!

We would not recommend this pub. This was our first visit. When we arrived we found the drinks was over priced, staff was very unfriendly. The bar man shown us to our table and just sat us there we wasnt offered any menues or consulted of how to order. I had to get my own menu and ask other staff how to order. When our sunday lunch came the yorkshire puddings were burnt only 2 small slices of meat and not much veg peas and carrots with amples of mash. The atmosphere was not good we could not wait to leave and would not recommend this pub at all.

We visited the duke of Sussex as a family this week and it’s our daughters favourite place! They have a huge collection of board games for kids and the kids menu is just fantastic and great value for money 👍🏻

Being no strangers to the Duke, we chanced our luck after being badly let down by another venue and we’re fortunate enough to secure a table at prime time: 8pm.As always, the welcome was spot on and the beverage options were plentiful - we’ve never encountered anything less here to be honest!Choice of tables followed by something of a plea to utilise the Valentines menu (you’re supposed to pre-book) led to Steve and the team confirming all suspicions that nothing is too much trouble!Food, excellent and has been whenever we have eaten. Beer was very, very good despite my nabbing the last pint of Columbus (and getting a cheeky sample of its replacement!) and there’s no way on earth you can fault the service or the pricing.I live in constant regret that our recent house move has dragged us further away from my favourite pub in the county... but it is on the bus route!!

Called to check out the new refurb and was very impressed. Had a real ale and was very tasty.Will return and try the food, only downside was a very obnoxious bar man.

Visited on 21.1.18 with a group of 20 people for food. Service was fabulous and the food was perfect! Great venue with a even better menu!

The pub has recently been refurbished so we thought we'd give it a try. It's nicely decorated and the staff are pleasant. We ordered food, I had the lamb shank. £11... the portion was small, frozen veg and the mash was powdered!! Tiny boat of minty gravy. I was really disappointed, a proper processed meal! Not sure I'd eat there again.

To be fair, the place had only been opened a week or so after a large refurbishment. Therefore things were still a bit new to mine hosts, chef and waiters etc.The table etc wasn't "ready" for us but was quickly cleaned up after pointing this out.The meal though was, on the whole excellent. There was a group of us so the order was of several different meals. The two who had steaks said they were cooked to perfection. The lamb shanks were also said to "melt in the mouth". If there was a niggle it was that the french fries were not as hot as they possibly should have been, but on the whole meal was great.The prices are fair and the service pretty good too.Will give it another try for definite.

Visited today with my family and we received a warm welcome. The pub was very busy but we still received a great lunch spot on time . The food was very delicious and it was a good sized portion with three veg , mash , roasties and all the turkey trimmings including Yorkshire pudding. All the thee courses were excellent . The service was professional but lighthearted I would like to thank all the staff for there hard work today . We all left highly satisfied .

So we went on Friday at 8:15pm for drinks and a meal. So we ordered our pints and then came to order our meals. Problem!! One of the two chefs had failed to turn up. The other chef was doing no more meals. So they lost four meals and about 3 futher pints per person.But hope this was a one off and will try again.

My wife and i went to the Duke of Sussex on the 11th Dec 2017, on entering we found it warm and welcoming, the beer i asked for was smashing. Great start. Not too many people in, but as i say very comfy. As time passed i decided i would try another pint, as i arrived at the bar i found it deserted, no one either side of the bar or anyonre clearing tables etc, waited, eventually the barman appeared, drinks sorted. As i sat with the wife and was looking around the room my eyes where diverted back to the bar to see said barman playing a game on his phone, and his assitant just stood doing nothing. After ten minutes or so barman went outside for a cigarette, only to be seen at the window pulling faces and poking his tongue out at the assistant still stood in the same position. Odd. 21st Dec Arrived back at the Duke again with my wife and three friends, four people in the pub but it was nice and cosy, we ordered drinks and sat down for a chat but noticed that there where seven tables with plates from diners still left unatended or cleared away. After some 25 minutes or so I went to the bar to have our drinks replenished only to find the bar devoid of staff once again, barman appeared, drinks sorted. I sat down with my beer only to notice red lipstick around the top of the glass, took the drink back to the bar and informed the barman who took the drink from me and poured the beer into another glass topped it up and walked off. Now what part of health and safety has he learned come into our thoughts as we watched gobsmacked at what we had witnessed, quite disgusted. Barman and a assistant sudenly started clearing away all the plates etc from the tables, over an hour we had been in the pub before any semblence of tidyness had come about. Now we like this pub very much but it does seem to the party of friends we where with that someone needs a kick up the "ARRIS" and get the tidying done and make the place look like it wants our business, this time of year the pub should be quite busy, but alas.Brilliant Pub, Staff need to do so much better. We welcome a reply.

Had a very enjoyable Christmas dinner it was very tasty and hot . The portions was very good could not fault it .

Christmas Fayre booked for 30 people. Interesting to see how staff would cope with a large group in a small establishment. Food came out well organised, well prepared and very enjoyable. Staff could not have been more interested and attentive. Well done, and a great night enjoyed by all. Oh, the beer was spot on too

A very friendly and lovely place , got a very good choice of real ales,good food menu ,we ate here a few time now ,never been disappointed .we have had the sunday lunch and had a few evening meals with friends .Today we been for tea had the two for a £10 the pies was really good ,full of meat very good value and all homemade x

We had a fantastic meal at the new-look Duke of Sussex.The lady behind the bar was friendly and very attentive and made us feel very welcome. The food and real ale were exceptional and very good value for money. We stayed at our table long after we had finished eating and the staff were happy for us to stay. A great pub for a lunch and get together!

Visited here for Sunday lunch after refurbishment and must say it looks great and has a good choice of ales and wine ect. Staff are pleasant and atmosphere is good. Looked at the menu and went to order the steaks but was told at the bar they where only doing Sunday roasts as they did not want any waste from meat ect.and the other meals on the menu would not start until 6p.m. As we where hungry we ordered the beef dinners which came out promptly. The veg and roast potatoes where of the frozen variety,beef was dry and yorkshire was overcooked and gravy like water.We ate some and left the rest and left disappointed so in the future will only visit for drinks,such a shame as before the new ownership we really rated the food!

Have to say this used to be great pub, the food was great, however it did get run down towards the end. Now don't get me wrong the place in side looks a million times better and that is as good as it gets. The services is poor, the food (not a massive choice) has gone way way up in price for smaller portions.The food came out nicely presented, however the lasagna had been cremated round the edges which couldn't be eaten and there was no filling it was just all melted, greasy cheese to try and hide the burnt bits.The burgers, oh my goodness!!!! Never had a drier burger in all my years it was just awful.Safe to say will not be returning anytime soon, which is a shame as we used to visit often.

We went on Thursday to the open evening and it is excellent. It is now run by Pentrich Brewing Co. In addition to their own real ales, they have other real ales from other local brewers. Also, a gin menu. We had a meal and the food was very good. The only point we did not like and this pub is not on it's own, why do they have to play music!!

Tried this place about 3 times in as many years. It's not good !!!Food not good quality and served on chipped plates which are not very clean. The whole place is really dirty and it's not a very pleasant to even drink in. The chairs are so dirty and now there's the same people in who stand at the bar drinking with their dogs sat on the chairs !!!

Gone right downhill took ages to be noticed at bar too busy talking to regulars in other side wife had burger and chips of the frozen variety used to be real chips last visit I opted for tie green curry as I've never had looked like it had curdled put me off as I said Never Again

Another great value visit, opted for the two courses for £5.95, lovely home cooked food, much nicer food than several pubs in the surrounding area and came out quickly following being ordered. Only down fall is that the carpet could do with replacement. Will definitely visit again for a nice meal at a great price.

I went to this pub last evening (07/01/2017) for the karaoke night. I had to stand at the bar for 6 or 7 minutes waiting to be served while the barman stood chatting to regulars on the other side of the bar, when I eventually was served I was given a pint of beer which consisted of 50% beer and 50% froth which once settled turned out to be approximately 3/4 of a pint. - Very Poor Service !

Not sure if this place has had new management or simply just can't cope with busy Christmas time eating - popped in for a quick lunch betweeen xmas and new year - sold out of baguettes and cobs, no carvery with a party of ten having taken the last - out of stock of most stuff on menu - partner opted for lasagne and I had steak and ale pie. The lasagne was nice enough so no complaints with that meal, however the steak and ale pie should be renamed gristle and ale pie - 99% of the meat was chewy with large lumps of gristle - no one came to the table with the usual courteous 'is everything ok' so I could say it absolutely was NOT - not asked if we wanted sauces or anything so partner had to go on the scrounge to other tables for pepper and vinegar - totally disappointed and based on this wouldnt go back

Great service,great food again,haven't been for a while but will certainly go again.give it a try you won't be disappointed !

Not a massive menu but Ive usually had steak here and its always been nicely cooked - nothing fancy just good home cooking. The restaurant is a bit dated but its clean and the staff are polite and efficient.

There were 6 of us. Service was good, there was plenty on the plates and we all enjoyed it. Just lacked choice for the 1 vegetarian in our party.

I love this pub! The food is fabulous and home cooked which you don't find very often. The prices are really good to! Service is always good to.

Just popped in as we were attracted by the Steak Night offer. I did have a steak but my other half had steak and ale pie. Both meals were generous and really good. Just couples in and great friendly service. We will wander there again!!

Visited last night, Visited many times before. The food was delicious and cooked fresh when we ordered it. The chips are proper chips not frozen or oven chips.Very friendly staff behind the bar. Been in the past when it has not been too good, but could not fault it one bit this time

Well. A proper old bub, cosy & great views, friendly & humorous staff - oh, yes, fantastic home cooked food with PROPER chips. Succulent meats on the Sunday dinner & great pies made on premise. Nice to see tradition still exists. Well done to all the staff.
