Whilst we can not fault the warmth and friendliness of the staff, the food was very disappointing. We went here after reading the reviews for a special birthday celebration. The starter of scallops was mainly green salad with 3 very small hard to find scallops. The roast beef came with 3 hard to eat roast potatoes, green beans and broccoli with stems and ends still attached, the smallest Yorkshire pudding I have ever seen and a very wet cauliflower cheese. For the price of £45 per head for the roast and £17 for the scallop starter, this is not what I expect and we will not be returning or recommending friends and family. So disappointed 😡.

We had a terrific family lunch. Staff were a nice mix of easy going and attentive. Restaurant manager (Leuca) was great at setting us up well, a mix of elderly and very young, to get the most from the “Carve at the table” roast lunch format. Highly recommended.

I used to live in the area and popped into the beautifully situated Duke of Cumberland quite spontaneously, as much for old times sake as anything else and I didn’t know what to expect - and for once I didn’t mind. We managed to beg a table on a busy Friday night and what an incredible surprise! The GM Sam was utterly charming the staff welcoming, the atmosphere buzzing… and the food - well it blew us away! Fabulous innovative menu, immaculate presentation without being precious and fiddly, superb flavours and some of the most beautifully cooked fish I have tasted in a very long while. 5 stars all around! I cannot recommend this brilliant pub and restaurant highly enough. Well done!

This is the 2nd time this month I have lunched here and although the pub is wonderful I find the food very disappointing . It is utterly without any finesse . I had a dressed crab salad and the crab was mostly brown meat just plonked in the shell and a very large dollop of stodgy potatoes salad . Not good .

It saddens me to write this review as the location is next to none. There are picturesque grounds to sit outside in the summer and a traditional pub to drink a pint by the fire. My huge complaint is concerning the staff. We came on two occasions, had a terrible experience on the Thursday lunch with a very rude tall, blonde, slender young lady who was also worked on our Sunday visit. She shouldn’t work with the public. She was stressed and treated us like something the cat dragged in. Other staff members were smiley. Granted it was busy so we decided to return on the Sunday as the pub and food was excellent. Again, she was very stern and worked with another tall blonde girl who also had no interest in making our visit enjoyable. I have been meaning to visit The Duke for ages . Will not return until I’m treated in a welcoming fashion,

Actually we did both lunch and dinner, not on the same day the food and service was exceptional. Food was delicious, one of our party has a severe food allergy and so we advised the kitchen, the owner/chef came to the table and advised us that everything that was made in-house was safe. However the bun was made externally and he could not guarantee its safety. This was my 6th visit to the Duke and have organized groups of 20 or so there for Sunday lunch. It is a must visit spot every time I go to the UK. Highly recommend it.

This is known as the best place to eat in the area so I went with high expectations. I would say the starter and desserts were of a good standard. We all had lamb or pork as a main and both dishes were submerged in a dark gravy - quite old school cooking. The winelist was startlingly expensive (the median price was in the £50-80 range) but that is true of a number of places in the area. The bill was £85 each including tip.

Fabulous lunch for 20. Friends gathered round and enjoyed drinks before lunch in this excellent venue tucked away in West Sussex. Our starters ranged from Irish Oysters to pan seared scallops, all of which were served promptly by friendly staff. Then the pièce de résistance came with the roasts. Beef, Pork and Chicken. Beautifully cooked and ready for carving by my selected team. Magnums of Claret and English Sparkling Rose were fine accompaniments. The 'Duke' has been doing things well for a long time. A great country pub and restaurant.

So glad we chose to eat here on our stay nearby. Everything we had was so fresh and tasty. We got an amuse bouche (on the house) of tomato veloute, bread roll and whipped yeast butter.. this was all delicious! Starter of squid with chorizo and manchego was so fresh, with a nice light batter on the squid. Always a treat to go somewhere and have squid made fresh rather than the awful frozen rings you get everywhere. The steak main was also very nice but the star of this dish was the wild mushroom sauce and the chunky chips! For desert I had apple and berry crumble which was a perfect end to a delicious meal. This was one of the best crumbles I’ve ever had. Outstanding from start to finish!

Well, I don’t normally wrote reviews as, well to be honest I can’t normally be bothered, but when the food was this good I couldn’t not write one! I had ham egg and chunky chips, Chucky is an understatement, I hate thick cut chips, I always opt for fries where possible, but I went for it and wow I was glade I did, they were like wedges crispy yet fluffy, ham was beautiful, egg was perfectly runny, I ordered a side of veg to accompany it and again another brilliant choice, my husband ordered the burger, I hate eating out with my husband as he is the fussiest person going, but he said it was easily one of the best burgers he’s ever had, juicy, homemade accompanied beautifully with salad, burger sauce and his favourite gherkins, which is struggles to find other than McDonald’s, girls serving the food and taking orders all incredibly polite and friendly, wonderful outside fire which was a lovely touch next to the trout stream, if we didn’t live so far away and we’re just on a day trip we would be in here all the time, but it’s really made our day, thank you, definitely worth a trip!

We have been here several times, and generally very good, and every place has its foibles. However, our last visit was, for the prices we are paying to dine there, slightly underwhelming. All seemed to be going ok until the mains arrived. My partner ordered mussels with a toasted ciabatta. The mussels arrived, no bread, no bowl for the shells or spoon for the soup. So we called the young lass over and she told us she would bring it straight away. That didn't happened whilst the mussels quickly got cold. She was at the adjacent table setting up for the next day, oblivious to us waiting so we asked again, she then brought an ice cold piece of bread and still no bowl and spoon, and didn't seem very pleased that we asked again?! Finally went to manager and asked to correct this, which she did, but unfortunately the food was cold by this time, as was mine waiting for my partner to get her full meal right. To top it off, I asked for a small candle on the pudding which I rang a couple of days before to confirm, which they did. Frustratingly, no candle either nor any suggestion to take any £££ off the bill for a cold main. Like I said, a good place, but for the prices, the young staff serving should worry less about their phones and more about the paying customers having everything they are paying for. Disappointing!

Second visit to this lovely pub restaurant and brought some friends who were paying in recompense for a favour. Service is very good but the roast beef was awful. Our friends had the lamb and it had to be sent back as it was red...

The food and service at the Duke of Cumberland were both perfect. I really appreciate their non-alcoholic drinks as well! Situated in a gorgeous garden setting, we had a lovely evening and it is worth a visit for a fancy dinner. The only downside was...

Lovely atmosphere and good service. Great location and good selection of drinks, including alcohol-free. Food was great, although my sea bream was cooked in way too much oil and butter.

Picture postcard setting in its extensive grounds in an affluent rural area on the borders of West Sussex and Surrey, the original bar area is pleasant rustic and the restaurant behind a welcoming room with tables well spaced. All tables there were eventually occupied when...

I visted the Duke of Cumberland on Thursday lunchtime with my family and was taken back by the wonderful service and food. We were welcomed by our waitress (high pony tail) who kindly pulled the chair out for my elderly mum and continued to show...

The views are stunning and the bucolic setting and atmosphere are very special. Which are just a few of the reasons why this has been a favourite place to eat for many, many years. However, a recent dinner there was slightly disappointing and with a...

What a treat. This pub has been awarded for its food but the ambiance and views are stunning. Excellent service inside and out in a place which recently celebrated its 500th birthday. Don’t miss it if you are in the area.

A very interesting cafe tucked away down a side passage to this whole food shop. Greeted by the aroma of tasty smells. Ideal for a coffee stop. There were many books and newspapers to keep one amused. There was a selection of healthy foods on offer but essentially I visited with a friend for coffee. No background music which is good as we had a good uninterrupted conversatiin.

A long overdue revisit. Firstly I love the location. The welcome is great, but best of all is the food and drink – turns it into a wonderful place to be. The toasted sandwiches are labelled by cyclists - I had the Wiggo – kale, pesto, cheddar and onion chutney. Delicious! And the coffee was superb. Another part of the attraction is that I am really looking forward to being there again!

Came here as we were staying in our campsite up the road. I had a high 5 smoothie and a breakfast burrito both days as the first one was so very good -super hot and Delicious-def would go back again and recommend and they allow dogs in too. My partner had the small breakfast and a latte -he said was great as he also had it the 2nd day 😁
