Drakes Fish and Chip Restaurant and Take Away in Harrogate

Garbage service, garbage food! Ignored me as i waited, then served the drunk who que jumped ahead of us!! Won't bother again.

The worst fish & chips I’ve ever had. They were greasy and the chips were just scraps, no whole ones at all! The fish was thin and had too much batter on.

Visited for takeaway battered sausages and chips. Very good portion size, chips were tasty battered sausage above average but a bit soft and pale.

Not gluten free for coeliacs, as same fryer, Ripon branch is the same too, I can’t understand, they say we use the same fryer and not had any complaints That’s because we never go back

Drakes, knaresborough, what a let down, just went in for chips for the walk home, staff were rubbish, chef didn't know what he or any of the counter staff were doing. All arguing over the counter, couldn't be bothered to wait any longer, what a shame indeed, just moved into knaresborough as well.

My boyfriend and I came in here to get some large takeaway chips. They were very delicious and we enjoyed eating them while sat in the main square people watching. The only thing that knocks this down from 5 stars is the fact we had to pay 50p for ketchup and they didn't put the salt and vinegar on for us. Other than that, lovely.

Knaresborough Drakes is very poor compared to York and Ripon. Fish and chips lukewarm and chips just scraps. Overpriced portions of mushy peas - again lukewarm. Tables not very clean and remnants of food from previous customers under the table. Service was ok but no attention to detail. We should have complained but short on time. Drakes you need to up your game in this competitive world - would not recommend

Out in Knaresborough. Drakes restaurant, side of Market Square looked inviting. Staff happy, a nice table. Senior Citizens deal for us - Haddock & Chips, bread, Tea £11.50, Curry sauce (+£2.30). Arrived piping hot, thick Haddock in crispy batter, crispy chips. Tasty! Good value, will be our go to place when in Knaresborough.

Staying in Knaresborough we wanted something cheap and cheerful for our tea and Drakes fitted the bill. Haddock and chips 🍟.... good sized portion with curry sauce. Senior citizens offer (over 65) great value with 2 slices of bread and butter and a pot of tea. Excellent service too.

Chose Drakes to go to for our tea. So glad we did. The restaurant was clean and the Staff were friendly and helpful. The service was quick and efficient. Lots of condiments out on table . The fish and chips were gorgeous. Food was lovely and hot. Portions were nice and big. Could not have asked for anything better food and service wise. Highly recommend Drakes.

A lady called poppy was extremely polite and helpful and we was well taken care of and she help us a lot and said ice cream is free for childeren

Had cod and chips at Drakes Knaresborough 10/6/24. Not happy at all. More batter than fish, all good chips on top and underneath all scraps, plenty of chips but plate was too small to accomodate, stabbed a chip and 3 fell off plate etc... staff never came to ask if everything alright, i pointed out these issues at the end of the meal and person said they would pass on the comments to the chef. Seemed like other people in restaurant not totally happy too and seemed to agree with my complaint. Having said that, my partner had cod and chips and was satisfied.

Dropped off the A1 on my way home for Fish & Chips last night. I've been to Drake's in Knaresborough many times before and always found the quality of their Fish and Chips to be good. But last night it was superb! The fish was large, the chips were cooked perfectly and their mushy peas are so nice. It was all fresh and piping hot -the best fish & chips I've had for a long time, can't wait to go back.

Missed the lunchtime rush so the place was quiet. Cooked fresh, crispy batter, lovely fish & just enough of a portion of chips to make you want more in the future. Had a small carton of English style chip shop curry which was sweet & complimented the chips nicely. Would definitely recommend.

I'm sorry but in the last few weeks I've had a take away the fish and chips seem to have gone down hill. Usally have fish and chips in the restaurant and they were always spot on.what's gone wrong?

I called in at drakes on Monday,the service was friendly and the food was hot and tasty. Would recommend and we will certainly be going back soon.

Back in knaresborough today and I thought to give drakes another chance. Once again, order completely incorrect. I give up. How hard is it to read a till receipt and put the right items in a box?

“Drakes fisheries, how can we be rude, obnoxious and completely mess up your order today?” Honestly, the staff are rude, the food is not worth the payment asked and most off the time they completely mess up your order.

Visited on 30 Dec 2020 as on way home (2 min drive away) Chips luke warm, fish ok but small. Left hungry because we threw our chips(large portions) in the bin. After consistently good food during our 25 years living close by, the last couple of years seem to have gone downhill! Time to stick to our guns and try other chippies!

I've eaten fish and chips all over the country and these were up there with the very best. The fish was meaty and succulent with crispy batter, and the chips were very tasty. The mushy peas were full of flavour. A great take out lunch. Will definitely be back.

Sat down for haddock and chips which were tasty. Alcohol available as were other food choices not on menu but sold in main take away counter.

Eat in or take away fish shop in the market square in Knaresbrough. We chose to eat in and received a nice pleasant young lady to take our order. Good value fish n chips with a pot of tea and round of bread and butter. Tasty well cooked fish with light batter and well cooked chips. Recommend

we had a lovely family meal in drakes on Tuesday lunchtime. The food was lovely . The kids meals were a great size. The waitresses were very polite, i was also very impressed with all the cleaning down of tables and chairs in between customers.

We luckily managed to get a table especially as It was wed( market day).Very organised with very good covid rules being implemented however without it spoilting the dining experience.The food was excellent,extremely fresh,piping hot & exactly how old fashioned fish & chips should taste. My dad ordered the plaice which was enormous! The girls had sausages & chips& I had a good sized fish & chips. The set meals included bread& butter with tea. Staff are helpful & organised,so in all it was a great find & a very enjoyable visit.

The food and service is consistently good that’s why we keep returning to Drakes. Well set up for Covid protection for customers.

First, you don,t need a car to get there - the Transdev service is within ten yards or so. The ground floor dining room is always immaculate . The furniture is comfortable and well designed. The service is very efficient - cheerful and immaculate and, for the moment, fully Covid aware! Lastly, the food ! It,s simply superb, you won,t eat better fish, fried or otherwise, anywhere else, Try it for yourself !!

Ate here this week . Beautiful fish n chips. Pleasant staff . But not a relaxing experience at all due to the constant banging of the kitchen door .. desperately needs a soft closure on it .

We were staying in Knaresborough for a few days and was recommended Drakes. We sat in, and the service & attention to detail regarding Covid-19 was very efficient and reassuring. The food was amazing, delicious and plentiful, a proper Northern Chippy!

The best fish and chip shop in Yorkshire. So good we went on two successive evenings ! love the mushy peas !

If you like very greasy fish and chips this is the place to go. Had spam fritter and sausage with chips. Sausage was very bland and cheap. Horrible.

We've had some great fish and chips on our visits to Yorkshire over the years, but Drakes is up there with the best. Crispy golden chips and same for the batter with fresh, white haddock and proper mushy peas. All cooked fresh to order. Highly recommended.

hi ive been coming to drakes on and off over the last five years ,the fish and chips have always been spot on i would recommend anyone in the area to try them you would not be disappointed.they are first class and the service is good too

Fish and chips are amazing every time. Mushy peas were tepid today though. Staff always friendly and helpful, but tables were too close together and staff should definitely wear masks as they have to get near you to bring food to tables. I felt uneasy about this during a pandemic.

We got a takeout for a family of 3 and it all went in the bin. Asked for salt and there was so much on it was inedible. Such a shame.

We hadn't been to Knaresborough for a while and we're unsure where to eat. We were enticed into Drakes by the wonderful smell of their fish and chips. The staff were friendly and very accommodating and coped well with the Covid19 restraints. The fish and chips (which included tea or coffee and bread and butter) were mouth watering delicious. I would highly recommend this restaurant and we will certainly eat there again on our next visit.

I visited drakes in knaresborough on friday 21st august with 2 friends the service was excellent the food excellent. Very clean and spacious will definitely be visiting again.

Tasty fish and chips, really crispy batter one the fish Portions were a good size, it really hit the spot after a long walk We sat in the restaurant but they also do take away Staff were nice and friendly

Visited as a group of fourAll young staff had no interest in customer serviceIf you’re gluten and lactose free there’s no bread or butter and if you want anything other than coffee or tea there’s nothing else today so had to try hard to get a drink on the deal.Fish was two tails stuck together on three of the meals, very dry chips, fish inside the batter was dry and badly cookedDespite asking for items that were supposed to be part of the meal they never arrived with total disorganisation between staff and ordersAs a group of four and local we won’t be back, probably get away with tourist trade but for locals think again

Best in town, great fish & chips. I had the senior meal deal, starter of prawn cocktail, superb fish & chips, bread & butter, pot of tea £10.90, eat out deal, £5.45. The front of house lady was very friendly and welcoming.

Had fish and chips delivered early Friday evening - fish small, overcooked and rubbery, I’m sorry to say.

Stopped here for a take-out tea as passing through and enjoyed the most delicious fish & chips/sausage & chips. Absolute perfection. It's not my usual meal of choice but I've now changed my opinion and we are intending to swing by on the return journey for same again!

As I've lived on the coast in different resorts & fish n chips is my favourite meal I've had some great fish suppers. I've marked this place average, which is good for an inland chippie, if you know what I mean.

Had a takeaway on Friday night 2 fish and chips not good tail ends stuck together on both fish more batter than fish, extemely disapoointing ending up having some toast

Thoroughly enjoy every visit, luckily went today and find the govt say all restaurants are closed from tonight due to covid 19. BUT these are offering delivery service for £2. The best fish and chip restaurant and well worth us travelling from Bradford. Staff are always so lovely and it's very clean. Support their delivery service you will enjoy them and soon as this virus is over go to the restaurant. Xx

We enjoyed our sit down lunch of fish n chips, steak pie and a couple of glasses of wine. Staff nice and friendly and I like the old school feel inside. We felt comfortable and sit down area was nice and quiet. Will definitely use more for sit down meals.

Been to this fish and chip shop every time I visit Knaresborogh always beautiful and clean, the staff are polite and very helpful. But best of all the Fish and Chips are the best. I definitely recommend this place if you visit Knaresborough.

I vsited the takeaway for one of each. I was the only person in, I thought at the time it was unusual, for while I have not used this takeaway for awhile, I do remember there being at least a few waiting. I had to wair 20 or more minutes from entering till the fish and chips were server.I was not in the least bothered by the wait, as in my experiance with takeaway fish and chips, if you have to wait at a time when business is slow they are freshly cooked.When I arrived home, anticipating the freshly cooked fish and chip, my wife unwrapped them ready to put on the warmed plate, thats when we were so very disappointed, the batter was soggy and had stuck to the paper, the chips were almost cold, and the trip from town in the car had only taken no more than 3 minutes.Neadless to say after tasting the dicusting mess, we bind the lot, and ordered a takeaway Chinese from our favourite, very reliable takeaway.

Lovely little fish and chip restaurant. Popped in for a quick tea on a visit to Knaresborough. Friendly staff and nice food that came quickly. Only slight downside was that it was a little cold for our visit.

jumbo fish and chips out of this world cost £6.20 per porshion mussey peas £1.00 more you can not beat it

Great service and the tastiest Plaice, Chips and mushy peas I have ever had. The batter was light and crispy and the chips were cooked to perfection. Some friends took us there telling us it was their favourite eatery in Knaresborough, we now know why, fabulous. Highly recommend, definitely call in, you wont be disappointed. At a loss as to why there are negative reviews on here - no clue, nothing not to like.

Had a Fish Supper each along with some curry sauce. Very tasty, not too greasy and a decent amount of food. Would definitely go again. We had a takeaway.

I use visited this place on a weekly basis tonight me & my girl ordered a Cod Special & one normal Cod the normal Cod was £4.10 but mine being a Cod Special was £7.40 how can my girl Cod be the same size of mine or even bigger if she only got a normal one an I paid £3.30 more because there is no way this was a special more like sticking in a £4.10 one an getting whacked for a Special I hate getting ripped off an I feel like I did tonight but don’t think I will be coming back here like I use to so you will have just Lost around £600 a year off me for trying to pull a fast one not good at all from Drakes this a special I use to get from here in the photo garbage it is now

Stopped off for a takeaway cod and chips (with scraps) and we all agreed it was the best fish and chips we've ever had- delicious ligh, crispy, melt in the mouth batter, divine chips which were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and super friendly service. Highly recommend when you're next in lovely Knaresborough, just a shame we live 200 miles away!

Visited Knaresborough after moving south 7 years ago. A must visit was fish and chips from Drakes. THE best I’ve ever had. Amazing fish with a light batter and soft fat chips. You’ve got to try this place.

After a visit to knaresborough was cut short by the fantastic predictable English weather, we took refuge here and decided to have a bite to eat with the little one. Food was quick and very nice and could not knock the service.

We had a fantastic fish and chips at lunchtime on Friday. The haddock was fresh, succulent and perfectly cooked. The batter was perfect in texture, light and tasty. We ordered a Senior Citizens haddock and were delighted with the portion size. The haddock was slightly larger than I expected and the amount of chips was just right - not overwhelming. The market place location is ideal for visiting the sights of Knaresborough. The service was excellent. What more can I say?

I travel up to North Yorkshire often and on my way back i call into Drakes fish and chips in Knaresborough. they are the best and the service is very good too.

We popped in after deciding that the only other choices were Chinese, Indian and kebabs, so great decision on our part. The fish batter is light and crispy and the chips are perfect, highly recommended.

Fish chips and mushy peas! Carry them to a bench in the market place or a little further to the castle. Best enjoyed outside in the fresh air!

As a local I have used the restaurant and take away many times but after today I will not be using them ever again. Our take away visit this evening was terrible, the young boy managed to miss a fish off the order so after discovering this when we got home meant I had to drive back and complain, not that the staff were much bothered. They made no attempt to remedy the poor customer experience just gave me the missing fish. Then on top of the order error the fish batter was soggy and tasteless. We will be using Chain Lane Fishery from now on.

We do not eat any fish or seafood but the menu here is really quite varied - includes burgers, chicken dishes and sausages all served with excellent chip shop style chips...It is good value as the price quoted includes a pot of tea,bread and butter and usually a salad garnish. The service was swift and the staff very helpful and pleasant.

Visited today whilst in the area (from Yorkshire), and waited half an hour for drinks, then another half an hour for a prawn cocktail, then after an hour and a half and our mains still not arrived, we complained and walked out.

Fresh fish, great chips, great price, be prepared to queue when the town is busy! We had the fish and chips which was cooked to perfection. Service was excellent, and fast. If your in the area highly recommend.

This is a spacious place to enjoy fish and chips. Staff are helpful. In a good place near the Market Square. You will enjoy it.

Always thoroughly enjoyable fish and chips. There's nothing more frustrating than undercooked chips and soggy batter but that never happens here. Highly reccomended

We met up with family members for a pre Christmas catch up. The waitress greeted us with a smile and appeared very efficient. We all had a senior citizen meal which was a decent portion and very tasty.

Ended up in Drakes Saturday afternoon whilst at Knaresborough christmas market what a little gem of a place it is as well the place was absolutely packed and it wasnt hard to tell why either the staff where very attentive the food was gorgeous best fish and chips we've had in years nothing was to much to ask for either the waitress who took our order very friendly with a smile and the waiter had us all laughing whilst lighting the Christmas pudding at the table with his subtle cheek thank you once again we'll definitely be returning next time in Knaresborough

We've been to the one in York and while we we're in Knaresborough we thought we'd try this one. Although it didn't disappoint I much prefer the one in York.

The best fish and chips ever! Beautiful haddock in delicious batter and amazing chips. Mushy peas are generous, all served lovely and hot with a smile. Visited with my parents and a friend and we were made so welcome. Service was excellent and the manager is courteous, fun and very professional. He always looks after my elderly parents who are regular diners. Thank you.

What can I say, haddock and chips to die for, service second to none, a dessert sweet and tasty, Above all, value for money. Yes ,great value in Knaresbrough. Did I mention the comfortable surroundings in the heart of the town. Would recommend.

I called at Drakes at 11.30 on a Sunday morning and had fish and chips in the dinning room. Although it was quiet that early on I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. The fish was freshly cooked to order and cooked to my liking if lightly battered. Good value for money and will definitely return if back in Harrogate

Every time we travel to Knaresborough (about 4 times a year) this is the place we go to eat.

Well what can I say this place does the best gluten free fish and chips around we eat here when we can and always get take away.I love it because they cater for me so we can now all have the same tea wahoo.highly recommend trying xx

Been going to Drakes since moving to Knaresborough years ago. Fish and chips here are excellent, the fish is the best we have ever tasted and very consistent too. Occasionally we go in the restaurant for a sit down meal, either with family or friends, they are all very impressed. My daughter who lives in Leeds had Spanish friends visit so brought them to Drakes, they all loved it. My husband and I came recently with 4 friends and we were all saying how great it was.

We were so looking forward to fish and chips after a long day of walking. We ate at around 8:30, so quite close to restaurant closing time of 9pm, but were so disappointed. The chips were dry and burnt in places, the fish was also dry and the portions weren’t generous. For £8.95 a meal we expected much better. We can only assume we arrived quite late and that was why the food tasted stale but that shouldn’t be the case at all.

Food was very good and the service was also excellent and very quick. I really enjoyed my meal and I would come again

Called in here on Saturday evening and initially we nearly walked back out as there was loads of dirty tables.

Not our usual “chippy” and we were so disappointed in our take away fish and chips. The fish batter was soggy and very thin and the chips were “lifeless” and poor tasting. Not worth the money and will not be returning.

When my Mum and her Partner visit us, within an hour they are asking when we are going to Drakes in Knaresborough... excellent fish and chips every single time.
