This place used to be a favourite of ours but on this occasion the service was terrible. 5 or 6 bar staff, most of whom were drifting about behind the bar chatting or avoiding making eye contact. The girl that served us had to walk past 3 colleagues who were just twiddling their thumbs.

A great find. A lovely old bar style in a grand building in the heart of Harrogate. We popped in en route to York and just wanted a quick sandwich. We chose just a cheese and chutney sandwich, thinking it was just going to be basic and something to fill a gap. However, it came in a beautiful, warm crusty bread. The sweet onion chutney was wonderful and this was accompanied by a nice, leafy salad in a pleasant dressing and some crisps. We really enjoyed it. I must say, the main meals looked a bit pricey, but we were OK with the sandwich price, just under £9, if I remember correctly. No worries with beers and lagers, a good selection. I chose Black Sheep beer, which went well with the sandwich. The staff were pleasant and helpful. There is a parking charge of £1.50 per hour at the covered car park adjacent. You can pay outside or inside the pub. We'll certainly be popping in when we are in Harrogate again.

We had a really nice Sunday lunch here. The Sunday set menu offers great value for money. The roast beef was good and came with the biggest Yorkshire pudding I've ever seen. There's some vegetarian opinions on the menu. It's well worth getting the side portion of Cauliflower and cheese sauce. They had a good range of local beers on offer. It is accessible to wheelchair users, but it's very tight to get up the ramp to the side of the main entrance.

Always a pleasant experience, went for a late lunchtime snack. Timmy Taylor’s in excellent condition. We had a beef sandwich and a side of fries between us. The only issue was the dirth of beef in the sandwich which if I remember correctly was £10.95 for that price I expect more than one thin slice of beef. Fries were very good.

Restaurant bar joined onto the hotel. Stayed here for a meal during a short stay in Harrogate. Service was good, with the chap who showed us to our table friendly and interacting with us. Food and drinks orders taken quickly, even though we were only one of two families in there. Food was good quality and reasonably priced for what is a more upmarket restaurant bar. We all enjoyed our meals and service. My only gripes would be parking has to be paid for, the lighting in the restaurant is a little dark and our disabled family member struggled to get in due to steps in every access point as far as we could tell. Otherwise, recommended.

My partner and I went to The Fat Badger for our four years Anniversary meal. We came all the way from Leeds, so we were very excited to go in and get some tasty food as we have heard some wonderful things about the restaurant. My partner and I were immediately seated and we were immediately very impressed with the service provided by the highly attentive members of the staff. They brought us the sunday roast menu, drinks menu etc. with a bottle of water (harrogate water wink wink!) We decided to go for a bottle of Cabernet Franc, ‘Le Tristan’, Gilbert Chon as it is a light bodied red well paired with meat. It was yum! I could drink two bottles of that without wincing. For appetisers, my partner order the Goats cheese salad with Beetroot and pine nuts. The cheese was perfectly seared which was so tender and tasty and the salad was so refreshing, came with some chunks of beetroot (which we couldn’t fault one bit, we LOVE beetroot in salad!) I ordered the Salmon fishcake with salad and house tartar sauce. The salad and the tartar sauce was yum, but the fishcake had potential to be better. It was a bit lumpy (felt like it couldve been store bought?) We jumped into our mains right after. The food was soooo well presented, the member of the staff who brought it in looked so proud of the Yorkshire puddings, I cannot blame him. They were huge! My partner ordered the Roast rump cap of beef and I ordered the Roast loin of pork with stuffing. Both came with the said huge yorkshire pudding, seasonal vegetables, roast potatoes in duck fat, creamy mash & gravy and we ordered the extra cauliflower cheese! Now the beef roast was soooo good, tender, medium rare, absolutely banging. I will go back for that! My pork loin was average but the crackling was very good even better the bits that were soaked in gravy. The seasonal veggies were perfect! Al dente, star of the show were the savoy cabbage, going to make some for myself this sunday! 😋 There were two problems! 1. The quantity of gravy. So little, I was gagging cuz of the lack of gravy, it would’ve been amazing if they offered a pot of gravy to pour over the Yorkshires. It was such a shame because the Yorkshires seemed dry without any filled inside it. We all know a roast is THE roast with excess gravy. Knowing lots of gravy can ruin the presentation (which is absolutely agreeable), roast is meant to also be homely (no problem if one goes ahead and ruins the look of everything on the plate with gravy because that would make one salivate immediately, ykwim?) Not something that cannot be fixed so I was not complaining ☺️ 2. My partner and I were very disappointed with the quality of the roast potatoes. We were expecting cripsy on the outside and fluffy on the inside potatoes, but the potatoes smelt stale, felt hard and were so dry. We both had to put them away. Such a shame because potatoes roasted in duck fat are sooooo gorgeous! Overall, we would DEFINITELY go back soon. We are going to try something else on the menu for sure. Hopefully our next time is a 100% 😊

Sunday lunch with family...table for 4 people pre booked the table and welcome into a very old style classic restaurant. Seated and given menus followed by request for drinks order. Waiter disappeared and another waiter brought drinks after about 20 minutes.Noticed that tablecloth was rather grubby underneath napkins The restaurant at that point was nowhere near capacity. Food order taken and 15 minutes to arrive. More people start to arrive without pre booking ie walk ins. We then waited 55 minutes for our main course meals which were Sunday roasts. Waiters seemed to be avoiding us until we have to ask. We are then told that they were short staffed and our meals were on their way. Other diners were being served within reasonable times including the walk ins . Then we were asked about desserts and when we told a waitress that we only now had limited parking time she replied that they would see what they could do. In value terms the cost per head was expensive for what in reality was very unexceptional The beef could not be cut with steak knives!! We will uncountably return to Harrogate but would seek out a better venue.

Nice decor, good selection of drinks including real ales. Food nice BUT WARNING service absolutely appalling. No one came to take a drinks order, no one came to take a food order. We had to ask three times for water to be brought to the table. After waiting an age for our main course and seeing other customers who had arrived and ordered almost half an hour after us get theirs we were told that the chef had mislaid our order. When it did arrive a specific request for extra mayo on the side had been ignored/ forgotten. On paying the bill I explained that the food had been nice but the service appalling and that was the reason I wasn't leaving a tip. This was at 21.05 hrs at 21.09 hrs I got an email from open table, who I had made the reservation with saying that I had failed to attend and had cancelled my booking. If I had any queries about this to raise them with the establishment itself. When I mentioned this to the waiter I was told not to worry it was probably a, "systems issue". I said systems only work on the information that is inputted into them and asked to see the manager. On discussing it with him he said that he or one of his staff may have 'accidentally' hit the customer cancelled button by mistake. This of course prevented me from being invited to submit a review on the open table website. A coincidence or deliberate ploy on the part of the restaurant to try and thwart an honest review from being posted, I will let you be the judge of that. In summary a nice location, good bar menu, nice food but don't go if you are hungry or thirsty as the service is appalling. As for the ethics of inputting false information about cancelling a booking that has just been fulfilled and paid for, let's just say it leaves a very unpleasant taste in the mouth.

That evening we decided last minute to see if we could get a table as a walk up and were lucky enough to get in the charming restaurant. We have visited the Fat Badger on several occasions now for Sunday lunch and we have consistently had a fabulous meal each time. There is the option to have 2 or 3 courses from the Sunday lunch menu as well as other choices off the normal menu. It is always extremely busy and as they serve food later than many other establishments it is always advisable to book if you want to be sure of getting a table! There is normally a choice of three roast meats. The roast beef has been consistently good and it can be served pink if that is how you like it. The food has always been served hot and with plenty of fresh vegetables. A big shout out to Steve, the head chef, as the Sunday lunches have always been great. The service has been fantastic and nothing has been too much trouble. The staff are always wanting to provide a brilliant dining experience and a big thank you to Michal the manager and Polina who always goes the extra mile. We are three older ladies on an afternoon adventure and we saw the Fat Badger as we were looking for a parking space. It was a very warm day and whilst there was seating available outside, we chose to sit inside because the location is on a very busy road with a small pavement separating the tables from the traffic. A table was found for us and we chose our dishes before ordering at the bar. The food is typical pub/bistro fare. I chose a burger which came with fries and salad decorations. It was nice. One of my friends had a lamb pie which she declared to be wonderful. My other friend chose a steak pie with truffle mash. Again, it got the thumbs up. The atmosphere was informal and unhurried. I did notice we could have had lobster for £37!! Maybe next time. Average meal is around £30 for two courses plus drinks.

Never had any food here so cannot comment on it . The service was good if slow because of lack of staff , the staff that were there were friendly , polite and nice .. The atmosphere was pleasant and a lot of people were sitting on the outside tables because of the nice weather . A nice selection of drinks were available from the bar .

The staff where lovely, decided to treat myself to the fish and for 26 pounds I got, some lovely fish but close to 0 veg and literally one potato cut up to try and be fancy but one single boiled potato. With all the fanciness and ambience and paying that much for a meal. I expect to be at least a little full by the end of it. Dissappointed as my friends dig into sandwiches, half the price and with more sides. Wanted to treat myself…left needing some peanuts from the bar to at least feel like I had a meal-didn’t risk buying them though as feared the price

We were staying at The White Hart, always drop on to the Fat Badger, nice place to chill in or outside, staff always pleasant and helpful, recommended. Talking of staff a massive thank you to Jackson T who found my wallet outside and returned it through the mail and saved a lot of phone calls, thank you

First ever visit here en-route to Harrogate. Upon arrival at the pub, the exterior isn't overly pretty, but the phrase "don't judge a book by its cover" was swept this away upon entering. We were greeted by 2 very welcoming staff members, the very lovely lady from New York and the young gentlemen. Our order of 2 x roast beef lunches and a chicken schnitzel were received quite promptly. All meals were plentiful, nice and hot and tasty. A very pleasant lunch.

The water rat is a friendly pub, with good beers and good food. Sunday carvery is worth doing but best book.
