Downe Arms Inn in Scarborough

We stayed as attending a Wedding at Danby Castle. Staff couldn’t have been more helpful, rooms were clean and comfortable. We had a Double with en-suite including full bath. Other family had a twin with full ensuite bathroom. We had an evening meal and breakfast which was excellent value and so huge we couldn’t eat it all. Staff helped us get return lift to venue. Ubers don’t cover the area and taxis are extortionate prices. Would recommend if looking for really value in a lovely location

We stayed as a family of 8 for my sons wedding, fantastic hosts, rooms are fantastic, beds so comfy, and the food is amazing too all the family thoroughly enjoyed the weekend at this gem of a place keep up the fantastic work guys

Booked a stay for 4 couples to attend a family wedding at Danby Hall. The staff here are great; very friendly and welcoming. The same can be said for the locals. We had food and drinks when we arrived and everything was spot on! The food was homemade and piping hot. We stayed in Room 4, which was a large room and was very comfortable. There was a large dressing table which was a bonus and the double bed was soooo comfortable! The bathroom had a bath and shower and was a decent size. Breakfast was amazing, lots of choice! Very tasty and filling! Nothing to fault, always served with a smile. Special shout out to Ryan who worked behind the bar and offered to collect all 8 of us from the wedding venue at midnight. Absolute gem. Overall great stay, defo be back. Thank you.

2 night stay with breakfast was perfect, rooms nice, very clean, beds comfortable, evening meal and breakfast was lovely, nothing to fault with this place, staff very accommodating, stayed here for a wedding at Danby Castle, lovely lad who worked on the bar was very kind and picked us up and brought us back after the wedding to save us paying a fortune for a taxi.

Value for money of food, but not much space so advise booking a table. Food was all homemade and tasty. Good value on puds. Nice selection of food as well as veggie option.

So we were staying at the cottage across the road and popped in here for a swift drink on a couple of nights. Staff were lovely and engaged us in conversation which was a pleasure knowing how the south are about ignorance. We are from Shropshire and found all those people we spoke to in the pub as if we were long lost relatives. We didn't eat but the food looked lovely and plentiful. Great choice of beers and great outside space.

We stayed at Downe Arms to attend a wedding near Castleton. The landlord was very accommodating and allowed us to get change there prior to check in . All the staff were very friendly . We had a full English in the morning which was very good and good quality ! The room was clean, tidy and beautiful view .

Firstly this review is about the BnB aspect of our stay here not the pub/Bar food. The heating in the rooms had been turned off,it was May yes but both us and the couple we visited with were both told to turn the radiator valve one way or the other, they were centrally turned off so rooms freezing on the two night stay. Also no complimentary shower gel,shampoo or any form of any bathroom essentials. I mean come on it's just good manners to show a guest you value them for choosing to stay. Breakfast no menu so you can at least see what is on offer, and no vegetarian option or ask of any dietary needs. Had to ask if any fresh orange juice and we clearly saw the staff returning from outside with some, I can only assume from the co op over the road. It should be on display what is on offer to eat, not just having to ask if it's here or not, which was a real let down and annoying. It's like we were having to ask and guess if we can have it or not. Lastly as a BnB we feel it was over priced as we paid as two couples £306 each for two nights that was with breakfasts as feel it's over priced. Budget BnB at best. Like I said bar and pub food and that aspect of the place is good but the BnB side needs a shake up on price and personal touch.

We stayed overnight, having an early start at Sandsend the next morning. It seemed a convenient place. The rooms were clean and pleasant, with views over the spectacular scenery of the North York Moors. We were served a very generous breakfast in the morning. The full English is guaranteed to set you up for whatever strenous walking you may have planned, at least until lunchtime. The owner and his wife are very friendly and welcoming. For those looking for a good evening meal, the Eskdale, just half a mile down the road, has a great menu and a really nice dining room. One of the less pleasant aspects of our stay was that the Friday we were there, it was music night at the pub. The singer was good: I know, because I could hear every note in my room. We had planned for an early night, but until it ended at 11pm, that was out of the question. Our friend, staying down the corridor, was also kept awake, and was then roused at 5am by a toddler shouting in the next room. The pub is a Victorian inn, with nicely converted upstairs rooms, but they did not include much soundproofing in their redesign plans. That is unfortunate. The prices for the rooms were not cheap either. I recommend that anyone planning to stay should enquire in advance whether their time includes any events in the pub, if they have any thoughts of getting to sleep before eleven pm. Also, check the prices against those advertised online, and make sure you don't get overcharged (our first quote was a lot higher, reduced on request), and check that breakfast is included in the price if you are paying above the usual rate.

9 of us had a meal here whilst staying in the village. 5 of us had various Parmos, they were delicious, huge (none of us finished) and really good value. All the other meals (steak, fish and chips, pie, something vegetarian) were also rated as delicious. Definitely well worth a visit.

Stayed here for the Whitby scooter rally, great little place, warm greeting by the staff,full of locals (very good sign) good wine and well kept beers ( recommend the neck oil) view from the beer garden to die for. Haven't slept so well for ages on the 2 foot thick mattress. If you are into walking, then highly recommend.

We are staying at a friend's cottage in the village and thought we'd try the local for food and drinks. The place is lovely and clean and got a very nice welcome as we walked in. Had Timothy Taylor landlord on. So hubby was very happy and said its a very good pint. We ordered our food. The place was busy and we had to wait but I believe if it comes out in 10 mins it can't be good. Well the wait was worth it. The portion size was extremely good. And you definitely don't leave hungry. Food was very well presented and was delicious. If you are in the area or lucky enough to live in the village, it's well worth a visit. We'll be back.

Came here to try out the food since it’s changed ownership. Oh my wow. Amazing. The portion size was huge, I couldn’t finish it. Hotshot parmo was full of flavour and cooked perfectly. Thanks Nicola and the team. Good to see a warm friendly pub again. Will definitely be coming again.

Bar person actually sitting down behind the bar, didn’t bother to even look up from her phone when we went in, never mind offer a greeting! Bar closed early. No food available. Loos dirty. Oh dear!

We were going to be staying staying in the village and wanted to book the restaurant for the Sunday Lunch. I attempted to call them via their corporate web site number but it rang out and I was disconnected. I then found their direct line number and tried it on numerous occasions prior to our stay with the same result, no answer and being cut off!

Jason and Richard are the ultimate hosts and will give you a very warm welcome at thier lovely pub. We were cycle touring through the area and got caught out with nowhere to stay and they couldnt have been more helpful. We had a great place to stay and a lovely evening in the pub which has a lovley atmostphere.

We booked two rooms at the Downe Arms for my Mother and I to stay for a local family event. The pub and rooms have recently been refurbished to a high standard, everything was spotless. Jason and Richard could not have been more accommodating, ensuring our every need was met. The rooms were lovely with very comfortable beds and bed linen. Breakfast had a good choice of cereal & pastries and I ordered excellent poached eggs & bacon. Thank you both, we will stay again on our next trip

Lovely pub ..visited with my daughter and grandchildren and a warm friendly greeting. Food was lovely plenty of lovely roast beef and plenty of vegetables and rich gravy .pleasant staff and just a definite to visit again ..

We stayed in a beautiful cottage down the road from this pub. Called in for drinks 1st night and booked table for meal for 2nd night. The meal was absolutely fantastic, everything is freshly cooked, a very busy pub and I can see why. The menu offers food for all tastes and it’s really reasonably priced considering the standard of the food. If you visit and want a meal make sure you pre book because otherwise you may be disappointed it is that popular. We did eat there again before we left because we wanted to try other meals on the menu. The meals are plenty big enough and very filling. Both times we couldn’t manage even a dessert we were so full. Very dog friendly also

Called in for lunch after visiting the nearby Raptor Viewpoint. Had the steak pie, which was the best I've had for many a year. Highly recommended.

This gorgeous classic pub has blasted back on to the scene. The staff are great , helpful, and funny. The food is amazing and probably the best Parmos in the area already , but today we sampled the new Sunday Lunch and we were not disappointed it was stunning. Thankyou Jack and Liv Again

We stayed in a little cottage across the road from the pub which is great because ypu don't have to far to stagger, on the first night there we had food my girlfriend and her son had the burger and chips can't I ordered cod and chips overall the food was very very good my girlfriends son said it was the best burger he had the beer was spot on loverly local atmosphere very warm and friendly a great experience all round

5 of us visited on Monday May 9th (first time for about 1 year), 3 had the steak pie and 2 had the parmo sharing platter. The quality was superb with big portions (again). We managed to just finish the steak and ale pies but...

Amazing little place, everything about it is top notch, parmesans are by far the best in a large radius for a start nevermind the rest of the menu, firm favourite and I can't see it changing anytime in the future!

If you are going to eat here go for the Parmo platter for two, hot or not hot the choice is yours but all very good.

A fantastic meal in this venue. The setting is ideal, a lovely drive across the moors. The staff were brilliant, it all felt clean and well managed. We went specifically for the Parmo options and we're not disappointed. Thank you for a lovely meal

W were lucky enough to book for evening meal on the 17th May, the first day of inside dining reopening. We both had burgers, which were accompanied by plenty of salad and chips. Very tasty burgers. We gazed in awe at those fellow diners who ordered Parmo's for two, which came on a wooden platter. We felt Covid safe and enjoyed our first dining in experience for a long time. There is also a nice garden out the back overlooking chickens, ponies and a nice view of the moors. Note, at the time of visit they were not currently open for food every night. Check and book.

I have been many times over the years for drinks. I have been twice now in the last 2 months for food both times I have had a parmo and they are the best I have had by far. The family loved there food also. I recommended a friend and he also agrees how good the food is. Very polite and friendly staff really nice little pub and good drinks selection. We were staying across from the pub so naturally popped in on our first night. The food and service was excellent! The Covid changes were great and we felt safe and relaxed. The menu is limited but all the dishes we had were cooked to perfection. We even popped back on Thursday for their pub quiz which was good fun (even if we came last). Would throughly recommend a visit here

We ordered a Hot Shot Parmo and a Steak Pie and were both delicious. Also shared a Biscotti Cheesecake yum! Lovely pub, spaced out, friendly staff, excellent service, also served my favourite Rose wine. We will definately be visiting again.

Stayed at the pub for two nights whilst visiting family in the village, really nice welcoming, friendly locals pub that also welcomes people from outside of the area. There is plenty of drink choices, definitely something for everyone and the food was top class ! Jack is a very talented chef and won't send out food he isn't happy with, he puts a lot of effort into the flavours and also presentation of the food and it definitely shows. We stayed in room 3 which had everything you needed from a comfortable bed, TV, dressing table, tea and coffee making facilities, cupboard space for clothes and complimentary toiletries in the bathroom. Really impressed with the breakfast and nothing was too much trouble for the staff, delicious fryup on our last morning and even a doggy bag to take for our journey home as we were too full to finish breakfast. Thank you for a lovely stay, we can't wait to come back. High recommend.

Lovely staff, great beer, speedy service, amazing food. Opted for the vegan vegetable Thai curry with basmati rice and delicious fresh crunchy vegetables. Gorges ourselves on sides of chips and onion rings so sadly didn’t have room for a dessert. Ate here three time’s during our weeklong stay and popped in for a beer every night. Highly recommend!!

Unfortunately this place in its year's has really gone down hill.Food so so average for the price we had to send our starters back for been over cooked and dry, waited at reception ages as no staff around. People where seating themselfs at tables that had not been cleaned. This used to be a fantastic place to eat I'm not sure how it's become like it has.

We had chicken Parmesan and it was superb - best we’ve ever eaten! The staff were very friendly and had worked out really good social distancing measures so we felt very safe.

Delightful friendly service and great food. This is a lovely pub with a picturesque beer garden. The interior is cosy even with the COVID restrictions. The steak pie cake with proper chips. Best of all the service from the young bar person was just wonderful.

Wow. Read about this pub before we came and we were not disappointed.Very friendly staff and locals.We had the full hit on Sunday, starters, roast and pud. I was stuffed!The food was fabulous and with our roasts came extra gravy. You can never have enough gravy.The garlic mushroom starter was lovely and the sticky toffee pudding was scrummy.As we were staying nearby and had spotted some of the other dishes coming out we returned last night and tried the chicken dish. Flattened chicken breasts, coated with breadcrumbs and covered in bechemel and cheese sauce. Served with salad and triple cooked chips. It was amazing.Can’t wait to try another dish.If you are around Castleton then it is so worth a visit.Ruth and Keith Newey

First time we’ve been here last night, Lovely little find, staff were all smiley and friendly. Sat next to a cosy log fire. Beautiful food.

Finally got to eat at the Downe after jack and Liv have taken over. Could not have gone better, excellent food, hot and tasty & friendly atmosphere. I can recommend to anyone who wants a good honest pub meal and friendly people to serve you.

What a lovely place this is, recently taken over by Liv & Jack who are so welcoming and Jacks food is amazing! Spent an evening being welcomed by the local community which was nice. Unfortunately due to the weather we didn’t get any walking done so we will be back. Wishing Liv & Jack a long and happy life in this little gem.

It can be difficult to find anywhere to eat out with three dogs but in this friendly pub they were star attractionYou do need to book as even in January it’s quite busy, there was a great menu with loads of choice the food arrived hot and portions were large enough to leave the dogs some, deserts looked fantastic but we didn’t have room Great friendly staff, friendly locals and a fantastic gin selection what’s not to like we would definitely visit again when in the area

Welcomed over the Christmas period, great local village pub and the food was amazing. Great value, and great location. Totally recommend.

We visited the Downe Arms to eat on a Saturday evening, having pre-booked a table, as it was close by our accommodation. The staff were very friendly and were attentive to make sure that everything was OK, which it was. Menu choices are what one would expect from a classic British Pub menu, but unlike many of the pub "chains", well executed and we found the cheese board to be generous with respect to the lovely cheeses, but also the amount of crackers (something that, weirdly, I have found to be in short supply in other places). We hope to return to Castleton at some point, and the Downe Arms will definitely be an incentive to return. Good pub food.

What a great pub. Friendly locals, excellent beers, range of whiskies, warm and welcoming. We stayed above the bar and it was super comfy with excellent quality linens, spotless and the right temperature. We had to leave early so couldn't do breakfast but coffee machine left on for us qnd plenty of tea coffee in rooms. Will definitely be back soon.

The staff were an absolute delight but unfortunately the fridge where they kept the seafood had failed that evening and so those of us who chose fish had to think again. We’d be willing to give it another try the next time we need to eat out in Castleton.

Thought we would try the food here as we were staying locally and had read previous reviews. We were not disappointed. Best to go with a very empty stomach though and you probably won’t manage a pud afterwards. Friendly staff good location and delicious food. Whats not to like!!

Brilliant little pub. Went in twice during a short stay in the Moors and had two different ladies behind the bar, both were very friendly and good for a chat.

There have been many mixed reviews about this pub and the landlady and the food and the accommodation.

Booked a table with the lovely owners. They treated us very well and on our second visit to the pub they gave us the same service and accommodated our specific food requests. They clearly care about service because all their waiting staff are well trained and friendly. Drinks were well priced as well as food. Large portions and brilliant tasting food. Would highly recommend.

Myself and three friends were staying for a couple of nights nearby and decided to order a platter between us, we had ham, pork pie, cheese, salami and chorizo along with fries and onion rings as a side, for £5 each it was absolutely perfect. Thank you for letting us feel welcome.

My Friend and I spent a very enjoyable weekend at this wonderful country pub.

We were on our way to an early evening event nearby and were starving! It was just after 5pm and I think kitchen had just opened. Bought drinks and settled down for our meals. Daughter had chicken and bacon salad- portion was huge! Looked delicious, daughter confirmed it was. I had Tuscan bean stew. Another huge portion and really fab!! We had to leave after eating but place has a great vibe and could have stayed all night. Word of warning, if you want to eat best to book as place filled up while we were there. Would defo recommend and will return next time we're over that way. Staff great and dog friendly to boot. What's not to like?

We stayed over the road and had two great nights in the Downe Arms. The food was great and the pub had a lovely friendly atmosphere. The beer is kept well. On reflection the three ales on offer were rather similar but that’s a minor criticism

As one local said to me - 'we don't get many tourists round here!' - but after spending a night in the Downes Arms, I can say they're missing out.

We stayed here for one night whilst walking the Esk Valley . Julie was an amazing host, the food was great ( I can highly recommend the steak and ale pie!). The bedrooms were spotlessly clean and comfortable, and breakfast was fantastic , just what we needed before a long days walking. We will definitely be back again !

We had dinner at the Downe Arms on Easter Sunday. We were made to feel very welcome from the moment we arrived and had great, relaxed service until the moment we left. The food was really excellent, we had starters of soup, fishcakes and mains of roast pork and a steak and ale pie. All of the dishes were generous in size and packed full of flavour.

Me and my girlfriend stayed over on good Friday. Very welcoming pub and staff were very helpful and couldn’t do enough for you. Room was lovely and so was the pub. Lovely beer garden in the sun. Food was spot on , very very tasty.

Chose Downe Arms for accommodation whilst two days mountain biking on N York Moors as it was good value for money and in a lovely little village, with a little Coop shop close by.

Had a lovely meal this eveing. Competitively priced and delicious. As ever, since the new management have taken over, a really friendly welcome and excellent service from all staff. Great to see this pub is now going from strength to strength.

I stayed here for 2 nights with family and had a fantastic time. The bedrooms were spotlessly clean with nice comfy beds, lovely bedding and fluffy towels. Nice size en-suites, all with baths & showers. My bedroom had an amazing view over the back, I could see for miles over the fields.

6 of us booked in for Sunday dinner. Roast beef was lovely, served with mash and roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and veg. Steak and ale pie, served with chips and veg was awesome. Roast chicken with sausage meat stuffing also received great reviews. Puddings delicious. This is a lovely pub with a great atmosphere and welcoming staff. Highly recommend and will return if in the area.

We visited for a late Sunday lunch & from the moment we entered the Downe Arms we were made to feel welcome. We were given a choice of areas to eat & chose the small dining room with a lovely table by the log burner. The menu choice was extremely good but after a brisk coastal walk on a damp November day...we were here for a traditional Sunday roast. The meal was very good & tasty, vegetables perfectly cooked & the roast beef flavoursome....I would have liked the choice of having my beef on the rare side but that is purely a personal choice. We look forward to visiting again as the whole menu was imaginative & tempting plus the warm & friendly welcome made us want to return.

Welcoming and friendly pub in the centre of Castleton. Unfortunately didn't serve food whilst we stayed in the village but that was all due to change on the day we left. Lovely and warm inside thanks to the log burner being regularly topped up and only let down by the limited choice of real ales.

Had the opportunity of visiting the Downe in Castelton over the last couple of weekends. A fantastic place to stay; lovely rooms, cracking beer and excellent staff, led by Julie & Neil. They have really made a difference and brought the place to life - a full pub, good quiz and brilliant live band - a real pleasure to spend time there.

This was better than pub food, with friendly service and better than the Fox and hounds where we stayed. A nice atmosphere and well worth a visit.

Came here with my partner and our neighbour for a lunchtime treat and what a treat it was. Full menu available on a lunchtime and specials too. I chose the duck which was lovely and presented beautifully, my partner had steak which he really enjoyed and our neighbour also chose from the special board and had sea bass which he thoroughly enjoyed. We were so full be didn’t have room for dessert but I will leave room on my next visit. Fantastic host and an amazing building. Can’t comment on toilet facilities as didn’t use them but I’m sure they were immaculate as everywhere else was. Would we return? For sure :-)

My boyfriend and I cannot recommend the Downe Arms Inn highly enough. The staff are unanimously incredibly friendly and the view from the garden is postcard perfect (a tableau of sheep, chickens, cows, swallows and a cat). Not to mention the food...We both had the pan fried chicken on our final evening in Castleton and it was absolutely stunning. And if you like dogs, Archie, the resident dog is so cute.

My girlfriend, our neighbour and myself ate here today and we were all very impressed. The food, service and surroundings were all A1 and could not be faulted - and what a view from the beer garden at he back!!! I had rump steak, this missus had duck and our friend went for the sea bass, all three dishes were perfectly presented and tasted beautiful. I believe that the owners have not long taken over, but I can say that we definitely will be back in the not too distant future. Must mention that they are dog friendly too, and our two needy pooches were made to feel welcome. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Dined here yesterday evening. What a great change in such a short time. We are close...so we will be back. Apart from a logistics problem...what was on the menu didn't tally with what was served...we could not fault the place AND what we DID get was superb. Quality ingredients and excellent execution from cooking to presentation makes The Downe Arms a great venue...unequivocal recommendation.

Not sure what more you could ask for when you attend a pub if your foods delicious, pints great & the views overlooking the moors.

The warm welcome our walking group received from the new landlady was like a breath of fresh air compared to the last time. This excellent pub is now back on our list. Lovely pint of Black Sheep and service with a smile. Excellent views over Danby Dale from the beer garden.

Just had another enjoyable meal at The Downe Arms. Warm welcome with friendly and efficient service. Really enjoyed my 'Surf and Turf' and kids accommodated with small versions of Sunday roast which they both enjoyed.

We have new landlords at the Downe arms and they have created a lovely atmosphere with a cosy log fire and great food. Well worth a visit.

Please ignore any bad reviews for this place, they refer to the previous management before January 2018. The new management at this pub really have turned the place around. Had a lovely Sunday lunch today - highly recommended, give it a try.

Booked as a family three rooms at the Downe Arms. All rooms freshly refurbished and very comfortable. Landlady and Chef very hospitable (even changing menu to suit vegetarians!) great friendly pub in a picturesque location. Would definitely recommend. Thankyou for a lovely stay
