Saturday 9th March, 2024: Insanely disappointed. I think what strengthens the foundation of an establishment is its integrity and i would say that integrity is lacking immensely here. Excited to try out Edinburgh’s take on Canadian cuisine we made sure to check the restaurants hours to avoid disappointment. Clearly stated online and printed on the front door were the operating hours 12:00 pm - 12:00 am. So imagine our shock when we arrived at the door at 11:10 pm to find the restaurant empty and two unapologetic employees doing what seemed to be the last of the closing shift tasks. 50 minutes before the specified closing time. Now, I understand that often restaurants will close their kitchens a considerable amount of time before closing but in this case i find it dishonest and ridiculous that the restaurant was that far along in the closing process nearly an hour before it claimed to close. To advertise that you are open late in a city that shuts down early is a promise you must see through. We opted to go to a place across the street with delicious and flavourful mediterranean food and as we walked out with our orders at 11:30, we were even more shocked to see that the lights at Down The Hatch were off and the restaurant was completely closed. Leaves one to wonder when they started closing to be out and gone by 11:30. Integrity is a simple thing. if you’re not open till 12:00 am or at least till 11:30 pm don’t say you are. If there are extraneous circumstances to this, communicate them as opposed to reacting to customers as liabilities.

Having spent a few holidays in Canada and USA I am used to North American cuisine. Many have copied but few can match the authenticity. Down the Hatch made me feel I was actually there. Surprised by how big and light it was inside with well spaced tables. The greeting and service were excellent with good chat and a well explained menu. Menu is extensive and worth taking the time to browse for a while before you choose. Food was prompt and well presented. We tried the smoked turkey club, the beef dip and a portion of their mac cheese with portions of fries. Very tasty and delicious. Not the cheapest but I don’t mind paying for quality and this was on the money. Will definitely be returning to try other menu options. These guys need supporting in a difficult economic environment as they are a great addition to the edinburgh scene. Recommended.

Comfort food galore! Solid, juicy burgers of many types, sammies are good, too. Veg options. Best poutine in Edi (sorry, BmB) and can get a smaller serving of it, too, if you're not famished. Portions are generous and we often split a burger and chips between 2 hungry people and it works. Nice atmosphere, if a little noisy. Excellent, friendly service - even when they are slammed busy. Great Canadian food spot ! I tried the world famous beef dip, the dip is amazing, really compliments the sanwich. The hoagie tastes soft and buttery. I personally would prefer the cheese to be melted. 7.5/10 My favourite is the Mac and cheese of the day, it had pico de gallo with bratwrust. It’s very cheesy and creamy, great portion size. I highly recommend the Mac and cheese there. 9/10 The milkshake is one of the best I’ve had, I had the biscoff one. They have a great drinks menu with lots of amazing drinks. 10/10 Overall, they have a great drinks and food menu with lots of varieties. Great for lunch with plenty seatings. They had rugby fixtures playing as well. Food is reasonably priced. However, wait time for food is a bit long today, the restaurant was super busy so I recommend booking ahead. There's a new menu and it seems to do more harm than good. You can only get one size of poutine now and the one size you get is a small portion. The gravy must be a different recipe but it tasted very watery and not as flavourful as it used to. The poutine was cold for everyone on our table. The server forgot two of our orders. I had to ask three times if we could get water for the table. My burger was average. Had an ice cold bun but the insides were hot at least. Although they have a new menu, they still play the music way too loud (was a major complaint of mine in the past). And they play Netflix nature documentaries on the screen? Not even a complaint, just a really odd choice. If you want to go all in on the Canadian theme, at least play Canadian based shows. And if all of that isn't enough, I ended up paying £46 for two meals and two (bottled) Molson beers. Absolute ridiculous price for the low quality we received. Down the Hatch has been on thin ice before due to many reasons, but I always came crawling back for the good poutine. Now, since they can't even do that right, I can safely say I won't be going back to Down the Hatch again. I recommend everyone saves time (and money) and go somewhere else.

Lazy Kitchen! Most of the food was not hot - we sent back mac cheese and it came back still not hot enough. The “poutine” was just a bowl of chunky chips with curds and gravy - no skin on those fries guys. The mac cheese was not baked. The burger buns were cold, as though they’d been pre-toasted and not reheated before serving. The brisket burger was stingy - one slice of brisket that barley covered half the burger it sat on top of, plus if there was any “rum smoked pineapple bbq sauce” it had zero flavour. I won’t be returning to risk more of the same lazy cooking. The service was mostly great. The atmosphere is very loud in the back dining area.

We even flew all the way up from London just to try it, and it definitely exceeded our expectations! Booking a table is essential, as the place was packed on our Saturday evening visit. The atmosphere is fantastic, the service is top-notch, and the food… AMAZING! The poutine is just like what you'd find in Montreal, the wings are divine, and the beef sandwich was incredibly tasty with the perfect amount of horseradish. Have been here twice and had the same experience each time - hard to get the attention of staff to order more drinks, and table not cleared until after we left (we were prompted to leave after 2 hours which is ok…but we sat with those plates and first drink glasses for an hour while we waited for and then drank our second drinks). By 8pm at least two of the ladies loos had no loo roll. Thick layer of dust on top of hand dryer (not a huge deal, but it was noticeable!) Lots of photos on so ill not bother...so went here for the first time after lots of great word of mouth reviews re it's sister restaurant at sqf. We went in the early evening for dinner on Saturday and it was reasonably busy, I had booked thankfully. The girl serving us looked like she was having a bad day but everyone is entitled to one of them and the service wasn't bad just not that friendly. The restaurant itself reminds me of sitting outside under a big tent...the bar area is quite cool but the actual restaurant isn't quite as nice. The food although expensive for what you get is really good quality and very tasty. I had the beef dip roll and we shared the carne asada loaded fries. We also had the hatch burger with the brisket which was a bit disappointing as not much brisket. Burger tasted nice tho. The pilot ipa beer on tap was excellent and the red wine was fine. Its good but I've had better tbh. Very limited menu in terms of burgers and pricey for what you get.

OK, let me start saying I'm biased: I love a burger and an north american vibe, and, boy, does this place have one? Absolutely! Canadian vibes all over it, from start to finish. I went there two times and, living nearby as I live, it was surprising to me they existed, tbqh. And I loved to go there too. Nice service and the food was in ourtable in record time. First time I went I thought the fries with carne asada would be my starter and I ended up eating just that with a milkshake. Why? Because the dish was MASSIVE. And I'm a big guy, so, that should tell you this dish is a MAIN hidden as a plate to be shared, but it is really a main, or, at least can be one. Second time I went there I was aware of the size of the fries and asked fries as a side (poutines with queso) and a double cheeseburger. Again, I'm a big guy and the fries alone were another MASSIVE dish! Super flavorful and delish! A main in itself. The cheeseburger was perfectly cooked so, I'm already planning a third visit soon. And you? Why are you still there and not there yet? ;)

Insane that there’s a “Canadian” restaurant in Edinburgh. As soon as my friend told me about it, I had to see what they thought was “Canadian” fare. As a “Canadian” I think that Canada’s selection of ostensibly national food is basically nonexistent- other than poutine which is actually more Québécois than anything. Anyways, the maple poutine wasn’t authentic by any means (seasoning on the fries and maple syrup randomly drizzled on) but it was really good. Loved the sweetness of the maple syrup. The cheese curds could have been a tad squeakier. The Korean wings were as expected but yummy. Service was kinda bad but we came at a strange time (5pm) so no big deal.

A must visit if you are in Edinburgh! Great food, fast service along with great staff and well priced too. Definitely try some brisket if you go! They also love dogs so you can take them in and also have a doggo menu!

Casual and relaxed ambiance. Knowledgeable staff when suggesting and describing food. The food was amazing. The milkshake with liquor was saccharine... I love it.

Tough to get portion control right since it's all nice enough to deserve trying. Share a poutine and get a burger, and you'll be good for the meal. Oh, also, add on a milkshake. And a few cauliflower bites won't hurt. Making sure to leave space for cocktails. And of course dessert is always a must. Never seen a burger with wontons in it. Was good, hope I see them again!

Absolutely fantastic Canadian restaurant at the top of Leith Walk in Edinburgh. If you have a dog this is the PERFECT restaurant for you. Unlike many restaurants in Edinburgh, they allow dogs… but to say they “allow” is an understatement. They LOVE dogs and welcome them with open arms! The menu is full of deliciously naughty Canadian treats including burgers, wings, dirty fries, and poutine, and even a few salads for those trying to be healthy. For those with a dog, they have — I’m not kidding — a dog menu! I think the dog food is as good as many restaurants serve to humans and can still be eaten by humans if you wish. A bowl of shredded chicken is almost too good for a pooch! Highly recommend this spot for groups too. You’re guaranteed a good time. Shout out to the head chef and all the staff for making our visit so memorable, and for giving our dog Hugo a memorable evening!
