I had the pleasure of dining at this incredible Canadian restaurant, and I have to say, the poutine was absolutely the best I’ve ever had in Scotland!!!Everything was so authentic and flavorful—highly recommend!

Few dishes but good. Street food.

Travelled from Middlesbrough to meet Bubbles from Trailer Park Boys. Very accommodating staff and felt very welcome in this homely Canadian bar.

Our family’s burger meals were absolutely delicious. McKenna was exceptionally helpful and couldn’t do enough for us

Great tasting and very accurate Canadian style beef sandwich, perfect amount of beef dripping dip to dunk your Sammie into!

Food: I go there only for Korean wings and poutine - which I loooove & recommend Service: attentive and friendly, never been there peak hours They have high chairs for babies

Went on Wednesday for my birthday. It was nice and quiet and our food was served quickly. I had the beef dip which ruined with the overpowering horseradish. Unfortunately that was all you could taste. The partner enjoyed theirs and we both enjoyed the dirty fries we had to share.

I came here with friends when in the city this summer and decided to try down the hatch. I had the poutine I had never tried it before. It’s definitely a winner I also had a large strawberry milkshake which was to die for. I highly recommend checking this place out I never realised that Canadian food was a thing however it definitely is. And I definitely will return in the future.

Being Canadian visiting the area with my wife and Manc. friends who regularly come see us at home, we thought the experience was great and had a good time. We found the menu, food and price, typical of what you would find in Ontario Canada. The service and atmosphere were wonderful and I would recommend this establishment to anyone looking for a Canadian restaurant treat.

Came upon this by chance. Staff very accommodating and found a table for us during a busy lunch service. Food was delicious and service was great. Menu had something to suit everyone and included specials. Would thoroughly recommend.

Great little joint!!! Solid music, great atmosphere, and the food was amazing! We had the beef dip, chicken wings, poutine, and carne asada fries, all of which were top notch! As an American living in Germany this was a real taste of home

Listen, these burgers were excellent. A lot of topics and very juicy. You get your money’s worth for sure!! Good gluten free options.

I am writing this review over month after visit, I am working in hospitality over 10 years and never been more disappointed with my food. I was so excited for that visit, maybe just picked wrong thing from the menu, maybe it was just a bad day but philly sandwich was absolutely disgusting. Checked pictures online and my one wasn't even half good-looking like one on pictures... no flavour at all just green peppers and onions, few bits of rubbery steak and that's it. I really regret I didn't mention anything to staff, probably because I am working in a similar place and I respect all the hard work done by staff.

I really liked the idea of this place. It has a Canadian Sports Bar style theme and the menu looks like it would be great. The staff were really nice and helpful, we couldn’t fault the service. The main issue for me was that the food is just really average. I’d heard great things about down the hatch, but the burgers were so average I couldn’t recommend it. The sides were slightly better but not amazing either. The food wasn’t terrible, but with so many good burger places in Edinburgh, you can’t get away with average.

It is a nice Canadian restaurant with a cozy atmosphere. The staff was very nice. It is also nice that you can watch ice hockey matches.

Had a family get together and it was wonderful. The food is gorgeous and equally the staff were so helpful. Definitely would return.

Overrated - what should be simple food was executed badly. Burger quality was on par with something your mate would knock up on a bbq in their back garden (probably worse tbh). At least my dog enjoyed it.

Went for the wings wednesday special. Had the maple chipotle wings, which was crispy but loaded with sauce 😋 I enjoyed the poutine but the cheese curds could've been cut into smaller chunks.

We have been visiting down the hatch for the last 4 years, even through Covid. We held off on the review twice, giving it another benefit of the doubt but the 3rd visit was even worse than the previous 2, 1st visit 2019- insane ! Every aspect 10/10 poutine was right Wings were cooked perfectly Dripping in the cooked sauce Lashings of napkins needed (of course and as excepted !) Covid visit - I won’t go into detail as this was surreal and to be honest we were just delighted DTH was still open Early 2024 we returned, bearing in mind we had visited the Queensferry stop much to our disappointment Back to Edinburgh- the wings left a funny after taste - almost ‘fizzy’ We hate to bring front of house in but we will….they just didn’t care, no check back. Granted there was good banter between them Behind the bar After chatting to barmen in a local pub they advised we try Bucks Bar- oh my it was like Down the Hatch The First Time Round! Insane ! Today we have revisited Edinburgh and given DTH a chance ….what a let down. Right down to simple things - we shouldn’t have to ask for extra buffalo sauce to coat our ‘buffalo’ wings (which we were charged £2 after explains why) Our first experience at DTH will always be awesome so bring that back ! What’s changed……..?

The food is soooo good! The portions for the poutine in general are a little small as they're classed as a side dish, but I had the Christmas menu pigs and blankets poutine and it was delicious!! They did not skimp out on the pigs and blankets!! The maple bacon poutine is also gorgeous but a small serving, the wings are decent too :) Very filling though

First time being at Down the Hatch, and the burgers were amazing. Service was great, definitely will be back when in Edinburgh again.

Was in Edinburgh the other day and ate here with some friends, I was made to feel welcome from start to finish and the atmosphere was amazing. I had the Goat burger and haggis poutine for the first time and I can honestly say that it was the best burger I have ever had, Haggis, chips, cheese and gravey workes so well together. Even had an aftereight milkshake too haha. I would definitely recommend.

Good sandwiches and potatoes! I recommend arriving early, because at 9.45pm (exactly) they no longer take orders.

I have never been let down by DTH, food is always on point and the bar staff are super knowledgable.

Stopped here on our first day in Edinburgh because it was close to our hotel. Food was great and service as well. Our group of six had a variety of food and it tasted great. Our waitress gave us some tips on things to see around the city. We liked it so much we were back the next day for more

Had the Hail Caesar burger. best chicken burger I had in my life. Friendly staff and reasonable prices for this day and age. Good drink selection as well.

When in Scotland eat at Canadian restaurant? In this case, YES! The food was good. The service was friendly and completely honest. I ask about something. I don't even remember what it was he just shook his head, this is better I think it was cheaper too. And it's at the bottom of the hill!

Always love the visit to DTH. More often we go to South Queensferry for breakfast but today it was early afternoon dinner after picking up someone at Waverley station. Food was delicious and a good selection of beers.

Waiting staff were disinterested and inefficient. Food adequate. Not sure why this place is so popular. We were a table of six who waited some time to have our order taken and eventually had to ask if we could be served. Order was wrong when delivered to our table, although our server seemed to feel this was our fault and certainly expressed her annoyance at the inconvenience. Finally, we were asked to leave our table ‘within the next five minutes’, after a total dining experience which lasted 1 hour and 20 minutes, 30 of these minutes having been taken up waiting to have our order taken. We had booked in advance with no time restriction being given Very poor.

Went with family, I am coeliac, so this was the first burger out in years ! Gluten free bun and pattie were tasty as was the poittine ! Will be back, cleared plates for everyone !

We have visited Down the Hatch on multiple occasions, never disappointed until today. Greeted by a lovely girl behind the bar. She was polite and welcoming. It took longer than expected to order which would have been fine if the restaurant was busy. This time around the restaurant was empty. Service was slow with staff sitting at the bar, chatting. We wanted to order wings, none available we found out later on. We ordered poutine (delicious as always) and Mac of the moment. The Mac of the moment, caramelised onion and bacon didn't taste anything like it. No cheese in mac of the moment, no caramelised onion (dry onions flakes). It definitely didn't put us off from coming back but we do expect more. Old review. Hopefully will get back to this point. The best food in whole Edinburgh. Quick service, good selection. Perfect!!

First time here and was very impressed. Food was very tasty, could not fault it at all. I thought for the price of the burger you would have got some fries with it included but no we had to order fries separately. Will be back

Tried this place with a friend for something different. First thing I noticed is card payment only on the door which I am normally dead against!! Friendly staff, ok service. Authentic ? poutine is nice but seems like something I could make at home myself if wanted. Burger ok, a bit meh, £3 for a can of Fanta! Plus a service charge! Not my kind of place, won't be back.

Good vibes, but that was the only good thing. We pre-ordered maple poutine, they put only fries on the table. When we asked we were told that the bacon hadn't arrived on time so it wasn't available... We had to ask a server to bring just regular poutines that guests eating off the set menu were getting, only for the chips to be returned with just gravy and no curds. The fact that they didn't even tell us there was no poutine and thought we wouldn't notice was terrible. The burgers were quite dry and our Mac and cheese was cold. The food was incredibly slow to come out as well.

DTH use to be our go to place for burgers. Our visit in August was very poor. Food was not the best. We decided to give it another try today (October) food was poor they got my son's order wrong and the two adults meals were just thrown together. Service was poor and couple of servers had a bit of a bad attitude We've been here at least a dozen times so know the normal standard. Only realised once we were home the charged us for our child's meal which is meant to be kids eat free during October school holidays. Won't be back.

Fun food and drinks. Great atmosphere amazing staff. Try the maple fries. They were wonderful with giving us advice for other locally owned establishments to go try for an authentic Scotland experience! We came from Pacific Northwest in America and we wanted to fully experience the local culture and they made this possible!!

I had dinner here on my first evening. I didn't expect much, but it was really good. The burgers here are top-notch! The fries are perfect too. The staff was very friendly, and as a German, I was surprised by how good Canadian beer tastes! The only downside was that the dining area in the back felt a bit uncomfortable and open, but otherwise, it's an all-around great place.

Honestly, the food was pretty decent. However the service let this place down. Arrived at 19:50, someone came over to take our order at 20:05, and we were finished with our food by 20:30. Finished our drinks shortly after and then waited over an hour for someone to get our bill. This was after multiple attempts to flag someone down, the three staff walking by our tablet over 15 times, us both stacking our glasses and putting our jackets on. The only reason we got our bill was because we eyeballed someone for long enough that they realised we hadn’t had human contact in over an hour. Awful experience, wouldn’t go back if you paid me. An hour of my life I won’t get back just waiting for staff to do their job. The place wasn’t even busy, when we finally left there was one table out the front. Also didn’t enquire about allergens!

Stopped in on our trip to Scotland in August. As a Canadian wanted to support a local establishment that was owned by a fellow Canuck. Sat there for 20 minutes and was ignored by the staff so walked out.

Amazing burger and sandwiches! The service was on point! Thank to Daniel for the recommendation for the pastrami Sandwich! They had alcohol free IPA that was nice too!

As a Canadian, it was cool to visit this place. There's a ton of great Canadian feel both with the aesthetic, as well as watching a hockey game 😄🙏 Food choices are a bit pricey in my opinion. The fact that fries are an additional charge to the burger meals is a bit of a stretch. They also are just kind of regular fries with some additional seasoning in some cases. We'll say though that the Mac of the day was really filling. If you're Canadian looking for a fellow Canadian place, this is your spot. Spot. Just be prepared for some higher than usual prices for certain items. Staff were friendly but they did get our orders wrong a couple of times. But it did feel funny having one come up and immediately saying sorry. Felt like home.

I wouldn’t rush to come back, but still a decent option.

Eaten here several times before and everything was perfect as always. The servers Daniel and Lewis were very attentive and very kind and conversational. We had the daily special Hoisin Wings, the double bacon cheeseburger and as recommended by our waiter we had the carne asada dirty fries. The service was quick and they were helpful with my dietary requirements. I will definitely be back soon.

Ordered some food trough deliveroo, after over an hour we got the delivery, there was a panini missing from the order and the food was awful, tasteless and even worse to look at... End of the story, we didn't got our full order and after a week am still waiting on a refund, How this kind of place are open I don't know!

Food was a bit overpriced and overrated but the waitresses were really nice and sweet. Especially Sarah and Lucy, they are the best servers I’ve had the privilege to meet.

It's a Burger Bar. Noisy is good, but cacophany killing conversation not. And Beer... Not good - there Is Good Beer... Why not here? Then there's Billing&Tipping... Maybe in Canada the French habit of paying waiters centimes to make them keen for tips is the norm. But Belting it on at the checkout, forcing customer to visibley delete the tip... No.

Roast beef sandwich tasted like straight horse radish, no beef or onion flavor. For the price I would expect a side of fries but got none

Had a fantastic time and the staff were friendly and incredibly accommodating. My partner is celiac and vegetarian so eating out is difficult at best in our country but the staff made sure every need was met and were incredibly attentive. The food was the best we’ve had in Edinburgh so far especially for the price, the atmosphere was fun and homely, and the staff were a delight, we’ll be back before our trip ends!

Not worth the money. I ordered the Maple Bacon Poutine and the Oreo milkshake, and both were disappointing. The Maple Bacon Poutine didn’t live up to expectations. Despite being described as "seasoned skin-on fries," the fries were bland and unseasoned, and the advertised skins were missing. The maple syrup and gravy were barely noticeable, with a smoky flavour dominating the dish. The balance of ingredients was completely off. The Oreo milkshake, described as being ‘super thick like an old-fashioned shake should be’, was far from what was promised. What I received was runny, not cold, and overly sweet. The excessive sweetness left me feeling nauseous, and the texture and flavour, which should have been rich and thick, were completely missing. On a positive note, the presentation of both items was visually appealing, but that was the only highlight.

It used to be very good, but portion size shrinked a lot, the most expensive burger is now the size of a cheeseburger from Mcdonald's.

Poor service. Burger patty was small and thin. Food arrived luke warm. Fries to be purchased at an additional cost. Good poutine and a cool concept. Service and food could be a lot better. Wouldn’t recommend.

Walked in at 9pm on a Friday night asking for a table (there were loads available). The waitress says “ sorry I’ve served too many tables today I’m tired”…

Wrong on so many levels. Service is really, really poor. Waitresses prefer minding their own business and chit chat to one another rather than being attentive to customers. I ordered a burger without cheese and was brought one with cheese. Had to get a replacement, and this time, pickles and a few more ingredients were missing. Also, it's very pricey, and the portions are tiny. We were told the place would close at midnight, but already by 11pm, we started receiving the looks from the staff members inviting us to leave. If you want to close earlier, at least say so rather than stating something untrue. On the door, it says they close at midnight but then I saw they refused to serve two people who wanted to enter after 11 pm. Finally, when asked for the bill, i didn't get a proper receipt and got told just the amount to pay. They had added service charge (I guess 10%) without even asking!!! I am always happy to pay for it IF the waiting staff deserves it. That was not the case, though. I am very disappointed and feel like I paid way too much for what I actually got. Don't understand what the hype is about this place. Will never return and do not recommend

Asked for a table for 1 at 8p.m. on a Tuesday. In response i received an eye roll/ sigh combo from the server, as if i I had asked for something not remotely within the realms of possibility. Guys, you're entitled to be full/ busy but how about a side-order of manners with your poutine.

What's all the fuss aboot! Get there and find out. Stumbled across this place when at the Edinburgh festival and it was the best food we ate all trip. The Haggis poutine was exceptional.....all curds and wahey!!!! The prices were great, the portions good sizes not over packed as a restaurant and a lovely ambience too. Can't wait for the next excuse to find this place again. 10/10

Ordered the classic burger. It was nothing special, nowhere near the price asked for. The bun was not heated in any way which affected the overall texture. Service was very good though.

The poutine gravy was completely wrong. Tasted like bisto, even the McDonalds Poutine in Canada is better. Tunes were banging though.

The poutine is actually decent. I think the price is just too high. The sandwiches are 12-15 pounds and don’t include a side of chips- there is probably not a pub in Canada that wouldn’t include a side for that price. We were also a bit disappointed as Canada’s women’s national football team was playing Germany at the Olympics so we figured if anyone would play the match it would be the Canadian pub but they didn’t.

Best burger I have had in a lo.ong time. Fun staff and friendly banter makes it a joy. For me personally, gluten free was effortless for them (including the local beers). Highly recommended.

BEWARE OF THE SERVICE CHARGE! The food is good, it’s also quite expensive. I was handed the bill which had a 10% service charge added which l didn’t expect. I asked the server who had been impeccable up until then if she could remove it as I don’t believe in paying a service charge, the face she pulled at me was unprofessional to say the least. We are already paying a premium for sit-in v takeaway. Wont be back as I’m not going to ask for a service charge to be removed every time I come to pay the bill.

Nice little place, well decorated and friendly staff. I was surprised as a French-Canadian travelling abroad so I had to try it. They have vegan options, I had the vegan poutine, while definitely not like what we have at home it's still good and comforting. The portions are small, but cheap!

Adding 10 percent service charge on bills should not be a standard in the UK. Pay your staff a living wage.

I gave this place three tries and it left me disappointed each time :( Most recently I ordered the maple bacon poutine, which was sub-par. The cheese curds were ICE COLD, I kindly asked them to take it back and heat it up. Came back and the gravy was hot but the curds were still nearly frozen. C’mon folks, it’s supposed to be melting cheese! To top it off, there was no maple taste either (they claim to use the real stuff but either skimped so hard or just plain forgot to add it). The first time I came here, the service was spotty, like some servers had an attitude that couldn’t be bothered — maybe they were at the end of their shift? The deal breaker is I really don’t like the taste of their burgers — they all have some kind of BBQ spice with a very heavy-handed taste (not a sauce but mixed in to the meat itself). I really wanted to like this place, but three strikes and you’re out. To end on a positive note: They serve real milkshakes that are thick ice cream ones like in N. America, not some watered down milky thing. I didn’t try one but they looked good — and they even make boozy ones if you fancy that! Also, the Canadian wall decor in the back is cute and funky, I give them props for that too.
