Two egg breakfast is perfect, some of the best breakfast potatoes around (smash-fried), old school lunch counter vibes and solid service. Diner coffee like you’d expect and which is perfect for the scene. Excited to try more on the awesome, concise, and curated menu…. brisket, tlayuda, etc.

Edit: 5th time here, it's good again! Edit: 4th time here, this was previously my #1 spot to eat in Chicago but there has been a noticable decline in quality. The sunny side eggs were overcooked and the meat tasted like it had gone bad - how do you serve overcooked sunny side eggs at a diner charging what Dove's charges?... The service was also rushed and cold. I left feeling overall very diasapointed with our $50 meal. I had to check my previous pictures to make sure I wasnt imagining things - even the pictures of the food look like a poor imitation of what I had been served on previous occasions. Seriously, take a look at customer pictures of the dishes from the last couple months, vs earlier in the year. The food quality has taken a nose-dive. Hopefully they can bring the quality back but I will not be recommending this place anymore.

I walked in here without any expectations, as it just happened to be the nearest breakfast spot at the exact moment I searched for a place. HOLY HELL. This is such an incredible little spot. It definitely has a latino theme in the cuisine— my partner ordered a taco situation for breakfast that was absolutely SLAMMIN. I ordered the patty melt which usually comes on sourdough, but they were out of sourdough so they put it on rye and hot damn. I found myself gasping and clutching my chest between bites and I AM NOT A DRAMATIC PERSON. The fresh squeezed orange juice was divine. The service was fast. The ambiance was quintessential diner. 1000% will come again and will be adding this to the list of places I must bring guests when they visit Chicago.

Food is normally pretty great, but Doves are clearly making a conscious decision to rip-off their customers. Prices have risen, but it’s their decision to configure their handheld payment terminals to calculate the tip amounts based on your subtotal + taxes, and now they have started to add an opt-out 3% hospitality fee. I won’t be eating here frequently anymore so I hope your policies work out for you.

Maybe we ordered the wrong dishes…. First of all, the portions of the dishes are very Texan. However, the burnt ends hash was way too fatty, it was like every piece of burnt ends hash was just a big piece of fat, not brisket. The French toast was way too sweet and no layers of flavor but sweet. If you want healthier option, order something else. The reason I give 4 stars overall because the service and the atmosphere were nice.

Cute diner in a location that feels like quintessential Chicago. There’s nowhere in Wicker Park that’s better for breakfast. Our waiter was adamant that we try the chili oil that sits at each dining area - it was delicious and only added to the texmex fusion feel of the menu. This is the kind of laid back, quirky, fusion spot that you can’t quite put into one category. There is nowhere in Chicago quite like Dove’s!

Chill retro atmosphere, great service and excellent comfort food. Went for the After Dark menu on a Monday night in January. Seating is very limited and no reservations so get there early. There are a few seats that face each other, but otherwise you will likely sit side by side diner style. Menu changes frequently but it's all good choices. Love the homemade salsa matcha on the table as a condiment. Had the smashburger with crispy fries that were seasoned with an al pastor spice. Fantastic. Order the chipotle aioli to dip the fries too.. its a must have. You can order some really unique cocktails here too. I'll be coming back!

@lydieats 💕 You will find Dove’s on every Chicago breakfast list ✍️ It’s your usual neighborhood diner but with a Mexican & Southern twist. They have the old school, vintage-y vibes and friendly staff, making it a great spot to start your weekend. Space is limited, mostly counter seating with one communal table so prepare to wait in line! My pick is the chicken fried chicken. Buttermilk fried & covered in chorizo verde gravy. Appreciate the crunch - fried rly well and the chicken is juicy 😋 Gravy is pretty rich so the sweet peas and pearl onions help cut through it all. Dove’s deluxe is your classic option. Solid execution but nothing too special. If I lived in Wicker Park, I would go more often but it’s not worth a commute AND a thirty minute wait imo.

When we first arrived, the staff was attentive and we were seated immediately - lucky us! It took us awhile to select what we wanted - the prices aren’t cheap so we wanted to choose wisely. We ended up getting Burnt Ends Hash, the deviled eggs and Pozole Rojo. Deviled eggs are okay - not worth $4 for one egg in my opinion but we were glad to try it. The Burnt Ends Hash was excellent - great portion and seasoning. We got the pozole rojo as it stated online it is one of their more popular dishes. We felt it lacked seasoning, the chicken was flavorless and chewy, and the tostada was rock hard. We didn’t eat it and they did take it off of our bill thankfully. Not sure if our feedback was well received - it took awhile to get our waiter’s attention - so long that we had finished one of our meals before they came to check on us. And when we gave our feedback, our waiter seemed very annoyed with us. We’ve never sent food back at a restaurant before and felt very awkward about it. But we cannot justify eating such a tasteless dish at an $18 price point and at a restaurant with such positive reviews overall. We wouldn’t go again unfortunately but to each their own.

There are many great breakfast places fishing up the standards- Dove’s chose to blaze its own path with a menu that is wholly original and deeply, deliriously delicious. The Tlayuda was a giant tostada slathered in bean paste with grilled squash and cheese and arugula and scrambled eggs on top. Also recommend the Burnt Ends Brisket Hash and the Taco Noteno. We couldn’t let it go at just one dish so we split the apple butter French toast. All this serves with smiles and alacrity in a milieu straight out of the best 70s nostalgia. Unmissable.

I was given Doves location as a recommendation from another local business to go eat for lunch. When I arrived the place was fully pack with no seating area available. I still decided to stay and consider trying the food there. I was greeted by a waitress who decided to show me the menu. I became disappointed when I was not offered a seat or even asked would be dining in or take out. I got the impression since I was African American that they did not want me to stay or eat inside the restaurant but automatically presumed that I would have my food to go. I asked the waitress, "Do you think I would like to eat outside in the cold?". She then went on to servicing other customers who were not black and asked them would they like seats inside the restaurant.

Dove’s Luncheonette was my first stop on a brief stay in Chicago. Excellent neighborhood vibe, great service, eclectic music mix courtesy of a regularly rotated record player, and plenty of counter seating for this party of one. Everything was right in the world as I sipped coffee waiting on the arrival of a smoked brisket taco. It landed with a thud, unfortunately. Flavors were good, but tough as shoe leather. A fall-apart tender cut like brisket needs long cook time at low temps to bring out the best of it. They missed the mark on this. Food coming out looked good, so hope to get a chance to try something else next time I’m in the area. TL;DR…Skip the brisket

I ordered the “Smash Burger” and it was good. Don’t get me wrong. However, it is $16! It does not come with any sides at all. No fries. No side salad. Nothing. Not worth the price in the slightest. We sat at the bar and the bartender was not pleasant. He diss not greet us or say “you’re welcome” after I said “Thank you” for taking my plate away. My friend tried to make conversation and ask about the menu and he was very dismissive. He had no opinion as to what was the most ordered dish on the menu. He just repeated “They all are ordered regularly”. Would I recommend this place? If you want mediocre service and overly priced food, then sure. For anything else, no. Absolutely not.

Elevated familiar dishes that is ALWAYS have been (and still is) unquestionably excellent. Venue is frequently full and busy, that's all. 😬 3-courses in 1 hour with generous pacing. If you are in a hurry, please communicate. If you come here often, or think that the Regular Menu is boring ... check out the Special Menus, like Specials, Chicago Restaurant Week etc. NOTE, communal seating by the doors is a windy moment that certainly wakes you up. No worries, NOT a deal breaker. Be a Fashionista — Coat Slinging time. 😉 Habanero on the interesting BEET SALAD was a bit much for my taste, but I still finished the entire plate in small bites. OFF-MENU MUSHROOM ENCHILADAS is an addictive dish that easily turns a carnivore into vegan/vegetarian (like, me 🤣). Make sure you put more sauce on each bite. Oyster Mushrooms is much appreciated. CAJETA ICE CREAM is more of a caramel with a hint of goat. Yes, you can easily eat an entire pint. 😋 Ridiculously creamy. TOURISTS, feel free to drop by on your way to/from ORD as it's off Damen Blue Line. A superb local destination without the excessive markup. Quality ingredients on each dish with super chef flavor and ingredient combo ... dishes you can't make at home without spending an entire day. 🥰 Experience is worth The Talk. 👍 NEWS FLASH ... Blonde with nice curls and glasses (aka Chip ... say HI, Friends) said that it takes 3 humans to make ONE dish. 😮🙇‍♀️ Worthy! 💯

I’d still like a diner around that isn’t $15+ per plate, but that’s every restaurant in Wicker - this one’s really refined for the price. Food is simple and delicious, great combinations of American diner classics with robust Mexican flavors. Classic pozole and burnt ends hash are delicious, masa pancakes are wild, but I miss the memela! Dove’s is an experience; beautiful windows, charmingly decorated, always bustling, warm and cozy. The food may surprise you with its classic fare but with unique and flavorful taste. You may read a dish and feel it familiar, then taste it and find it’s better than what you had. Don’t fear the basic and enjoy all they have to offer; avocado toast (anything with their thick slices is a win) or chilaquiles, all are hearty! The food was decent here when my friend Shanelle and I gave this spot a try. The thing with seating was so weird though we went in and wanted a nice window seat and were seated in a tight corner and we watched some other folk get the spot we wanted a bit after we showed and had asked if we could be seated there. They filled their waters and had water while we still had no water as well. We even had some guy from the store next door come up and yell at my friend that they didn't have something she wanted to order-turns out he doesn't work there but he acted like it and made her feel very uncomfortable. They gave us some stickers to cheer us up after that uncomfortable communication, it turned out they had what she was looking for.

Excellent mezcal and cocktails pair perfectly with dishes that blend Southern cooking with Mexican cuisine. Always delicious, and the portions are delightfully large. Hard to go wrong with Dove's.

I always wait veryooooooo the time to receive the food at the scheduled time in the application, disorganized, and it is necessary to have employees to organize the delivery system to be delivered on time. At the time marked in the application. Service leaves something to be desired.

Great start of the day. The decoration is a bliss, it all look 40 years old, and probably is. And me like. Top that off with very friendly staff, and some really good breakfast food. And me being Scandinavian, enjoying Anglosaxon breakfast food takes a lot. But I was super happy, despite no rye bread or whole grains.

Incredibly tasty food; I ordered the hash and it was perfect. The potatoes are extremely well done and seasoned to perfection. We had an extremely sociable and helpful server and enjoyed him a lot (I forgot his name, darn!). Pricing is fair. Extremely good experience and I can’t wait to come back.
