I and my husband went for dinner .Restaurant section was empty . When I order my drink sprite waitress asked me pint or half and I realised that is not in the bottle so I wanted to change bottle of diet coke. After that strangely she was questioning that why I wanted bottle not the other option . Anyway then we ordered 2 starters , 2 mains and 1 puding. As a starter we both ordered the soup and it was ok. And the main course I had the fish which is disappointing. It was too tough , just boiled fish not even seasoned . It comes with raw onion ,some black olives, 1 bigh dried tomato and 1 egg. And again chef didn’t even put a pinch of salt in it. I finished the fish because I was so hungry and I didn’t want to waste it. Never come back again .

While the Hotel had an elegant entrance and staircase and was in a convenient position with clean rooms the dinner menu was a disappointing buffet and looked rather sad and dry and as there was only one other diner we left and went into town which was packed with fine restaurants and very busy. To be fair the breakfast was reasonable (except for awful coffee) and the staff were helpful although it all felt a bit Fawlty Towers!

We got to the restaurant for the pre-paid dinner at 1920 for a 1930 booking. Taken to table given menus then nothing. No one came near us for 20mins then we were asked what we wanted, including drinks. Then nothing, no drinks not even a piece of bread to go with the butter that was on the plate. Having watched other people being served before us we walked out after 40 mins waiting. Disgraceful service. The only plus was that it prompted us to find an excellent eatery in the town. We didn't even go down for breakfast we were that disgusted with the place. Lesson learned - read reviews before booking. Still shaking with annoyance! The one star was because I can't give NONE

In these strange times hotels are doing everything possible to keep customers/staff safe so having to book a breakfast slot and having it served at the table is no bad thing. Plenty of options on the breakfast choice sheet to choose from and the service from the staff was excellent under the present restrictions.

The service merited a 1 star review, but the restaurant’s staff are clearly working their socks off hence an extra star! One of our starters was delivered to the wrong table and wasn’t corrected until we intervened to point out that was our starter! The food was standard - no fine dining here - but the wait between starter and main was pushing half an hour. 2 hours in and we still hadn’t been able to order dessert. Once we finally managed to order dessert, the strawberry cheesecake, it arrived within 2 minutes. What’s going on in this restaurant? Poorly trained and overworked staff?

Staff with no manners or clue on customer service and the food wait time for soup is 45 minutes to an hour where you are greeted with puree' potato and leak. The mains were so bad we gave desert a miss. They even screw up breakfast in the morning. Trust me, if you stay at the hotel, bring breakfast bars and eat elsewhere.

This is a small restaurant in the very big Palace hotel. Service, food and setting are to be as expected from a big hotel. It is not the best hotel for dining out in Buxton but it is of a good standard.

Dined here during a weekend break at the hotel. The dining room is a huge ballroom type room packed with rows of tables and a set of serving stations at one end. The arrangement was self service with portions of each course laid out motorway service style. Diners swooped on mass with anything which looked remotely appetising disappearing and the remainder left to stand indefinitely. A Carvery was included with mains but unfortunately the quality and variety of veg resembled School dinners. The whole experience was disappointing in a soulless atmosphere with very young and timid staff with very poor knowledge of food and wine.

Having sat down in the lounge area and waited for a member of staff to take our order my husband went in search of any staff. There was no friendly welcome, staff seemed disorganised and as with other reviewers my husband carried the coffees back himself for our group of 8. The biscuits were 'poured' onto a plate and of cheapest quality not as expected in a 4* hotel. Business must be lost by the lack of customer service. We went elsewhere for lunch. Not a place we will ever return to.

First of all, let me begin by saying that the chef and his kitchen staff put themselves out to prepare a very nice evening meal for me. (My diet is very limited.) For that I am extremely grateful and we had a lovely time. However, although the breakfast food was very nice, the service was below par. It is a big restaurant with many tables, but we had to wait to be seated as nobody was effectively clearing after previous people had finished. We were not the only ones that had to wait. I can criticise this as I have been a waitress and know how to quickly and discretely clear tables. Also, we had to flag down a waiter to ask for tea and coffee a good 10 minutes after we had sat down. So I can only suggest that the restaurant considers retraining their waiting staff and manager, or the best time to go to the restaurant would be at opening time.

We stayed at the Palace on 2 consecutive weekends !FIRST WEEKEND 10/10We had the dinner bed and breakfast deal and everything was exceptional , our waitress Juliet was marvellous , especially as she was under pressure , no waiting for any courses or drinks .Our Chicken cafe creme (?) main course was delicious , piping hot with fresh veg , Cheese ( plenty of it and varied )and biscuits was a lovely end to the meal ,Also a free bottle of house white went down a treat , it was a pleasure to eat in the beautifully decorated dining roomBreakfast was also Fab , lots of choice all piping hot and the restaurant again nice and clean , the staff were also great , no delay in getting fresh coffee etc SECOND WEEKEND 5/10We enjoyed ourselves so much we re booked for the following weekend Whilst our room again was excellent our dining experience wasn't ,It was slightly more busy than the previous week , but the difference in staff was very noticeable . At our evening meal we had Long waits for food and longer waits for drinks , we had to ask a couple of times for everything , so annoying , worse was to come at breakfast We got down at 10.10 , the restaurant was a quarter full , but not one single Clean table ! Not good . We waited whilst the waiter cleaned a table .The food was very scarce even though there was over 20 minutes until breakfast finished , There was 3 eggs on the hot plate so my wife and son had one each and there was one broken one left , I asked the waitress ( long black hair & make up ) were they're any more eggs coming out , she just pointed at the tray with the solitary broken egg on, I said no I would like a couple of eggs please , she didn't reply just walked away raising her eyes !!!!!re appearing with a tray full & put them down as she walked away I thanked her and asked any black pudding , she snapped back NO , she is definitely in the wrong job , I plucked up the courage to ask for beans as that tray was also empty , she didn't reply and went to the kitchen and brought some out , also the table were the coffee ( all empty ) was full of stains , not very inviting ,I wondered weather it was different management on in our 2nd weekend stay such was the difference .

We had dinner included as part of our package for a one night stay on a Friday night at the Palace Hotel in Buxton which is now part of the Britannia hotel chain. The menu choices and overall quality of food was average. The service was very poor. We, and other diners, had to ask for basic service ie, food order to be taken, wine to be brought over, rolls to be served, plates to be cleared and to chase up the next course. The waiting staff were all very charming and helpful when asked but it appeared that they were not managed well. They didn't even seem to know which food order should go to which table. The restaurant is in a beautiful grand room. Shame our experience was not so grand!

Booked here for special Mothers Day lunch. quite frankly the service was so poor it became funny. Arriving on time we were shown to our table, and told someone would be over to take a drinks order. We waited, no one came. It was not busy. I went to the bar, ordered drinks, they were poured out but I had to ferry them back to the table. Another waitress then appeared, after 20 minutes, she didn't know if they had a children's menu (despite it being advertised). She also could not take our order! We waited another 10 minutes, and having chased again at the bar finally someone took our order. The food was a carvery, again this was not as per the advertisement. Nonetheless, the meat was bland, the potatoes over cooked and the veg undercooked. A real shame, sorry! We left after two courses as we could not stand the length of time everything took.

We stayed at the hotel for two nights and ate in the restaurant both times as part of our package. I can only describe the meals as good hotel food. It was good quality, average sized portions, reasonably presented. Nothing outstanding, but nothing to be unhappy with. If you like good traditional English style cooking with average to small sized portions (enough for most to enjoy three courses without feeling stuffed or hungry) then you should enjoy eating here in grand surrounding with friendly & attentive staff. Self service breakfast is also good.

I last went here for a Mother's Day lunch when I was very impressed with the food. We came for a family gathering last Sunday. It remains a great location to eat and the service remains 'strange', (we had to grab the wine menu off an empty table). Unfortunately the food has taken quite a tumble in quality.I had the roast pork as a main course. We noted that the amount of meat was far from generous, it felt like the pork joint had to last for the whole service. The food was all hot and well cooked (tho roast potatoes had been hanging round). What was disappointing for a carvery lunch was only two vegetables; carrots and peas. This was good news for the kids but we would have liked some cabbage, broccoli etc. The kids did moan at the lack of Yorkshire puddings. There is an air that the bare minimum is on offer, which is not appealing.

First of all the setting is very pleasant with the high ceilings and marble pillars. Its a very large restaurant and the tables are well spaced, so you do not intrude on other diners privacy. The menu is changed every day, and there is a good range of starters and main courses. We ate there on three occasions and the food was well presented, hot and tasty. We also tried three of the different wines and thought they were good value at around £20-£30 per bottle. Also we had a house champagne which was a Brut so it was quite dry for just under £50, again real good value. I think its well worth a visit, and the staff are eager to please.

On Saturday we were passing the hotel and saw Mother's Day lunch being advertised with a free gift for Mum (more of this later...). We booked a table.I do not know a better local destination for a celebration lunch. The restaurant is spacious and elegant and the hotel is in a prime location in Buxton. There was a three course meal on offer with a carvery-style main course. The price was approx. £16 per head and half price for children under twelve. I had prawn and salmon tian, (delicious), roast pork with crackling, (delicious), and sticky toffee pudding with clotted cream, (delicious). The service is best described a 'slow' which we didn't mind and 'mysterious' which was slightly more of a problem, (where are my drinks? why has no one taken the starter plates?). When we paid, my husband asked about the free gift advertised on the banner and the lady dealing with the bill seemed to know what he was talking about. We were offered free coffees for Mother's Day which we thought was very civil. It was only on leaving the hotel that we saw the banner again and discovered that it was advertising an event at the Dome next door! I can only say in my defence that it was in the same colour as all the Palace signage. Sorry, we weren't trying it on! What great customer service to offer us free coffees. We enjoyed said coffees in the conservatory looking at the great views. Best Mother's Day lunch!

My wife and I were on a deal which included a meal for 2 with wine. This made it overall good value. The menu was rather limited and the wine the house. We both had the chicken breast for mains and it was well cooked in a pepper sauce, the starters were unexceptional and I have forgotten them. My wife's fruit salad dessert was very good, though my cheese plate was rather bland but with a good variety of biscuits. I should warn afficionados of the apple that the bar staff have never heard of calvados (that fine digestif) and the range of brandy was 1.

We had a lovely bottle of wine and finished off with coffee . Used the restaurant as part of a stay at the Palace Hotel. As others have commented the menu choice is not wide, but is sufficient to give a good variety of dishes. Also everything was nicely cooked and well presented, so presumably the restricted choice means better control of output from the kitchen. Could not fault the lamb I had the first night, nicely seared outside and running pink in the centre. The second night the baked salmon was very tender. The menu offered only a 3 course option, but if you have a smaller appetite ask, as we did, and a 2 course option can be provided. An acceptable wine list was on offer. The whole dining room has a pleasant feel, with tables not so close together like some restaurants where you can hear the heartbeat of surrounding diners. Staff offered a pleasant and helpful service.

Dining experience lacks finesse, which is disappointing of such a landmark hotel in Buxton

The menu changes daily, however there is only a choice of approx. 6-7 meals for each course which could be a problem if you are a fussy eater. Both meals I had there were delicious though so less is definitely more as it is better to do fewer dishes well rather than lots poorly.

We stayed at the Palace Hotel and within our package were booked in for a 3 course meal. I can't fault the service. The menu had plenty of variety, the wine and the food were delicious and all of the staff were incredibly attentive. The restaurant was quite busy, yet we didn't have to wait for any part of our meal, and we felt well looked after. We were even given a complimentary drink as the waiter learnt in conversation that I was getting married in a few weeks time. I felt he went the extra mile, and made our experience even more enjoyable. The breakfast the following morning was a 'help yourself' affair, which we had no problem with at all. There have been a few negative reviews on this site about breakfast with people having to que etc, however, we went at the busiest time for our breakfast, and had no issues in the slightest. There was a good selection of food on offer. You can help yourself to a full English, Continental, fresh fruits, pastries or cereal. We had the full English which was lovely. I wouldn't hesitate to eat here again.

For lunch you have to sit on leather settees and your food is placed on low coffee talbes. Rather messy and awkward with elderly relatives. Nothing exciting on the menu but edible and well presented.

As in my hotel review, although staff were nice and friendly it was a bit chaotic and we were misinformed about dishes on the menu and there were a lot of extra charges over an above set price, cheeseboard £4 extra even though instead of included sweet. Our wine arrives after we had finished our starter, Breakfast was the normal big hotel buffet.

When I opted for the Salade Nicoise I foolishly expected it to arrive with tuna, especially as this was one item on the starter list to have no additional qualification. What arrived was a salad garnish about 4cm diameter in the centre of the plate, total cost of ingredients about 30p. Equally, the cheese for which there was a £4 supplement offered 4 basic pieces of cheese that would struggle to cost more than a quid. Such a shame that fantastic front of house service, and evidently careful attention from the kitchen team was so marred by a management decision process that allows a menu design based on minimal ingredient cost. Short-sighted.

We only popped in for a drink after visiting the Ladybower reservoir which is very close by. There is plenty of parking, but it was quite full, which conflicted with the number of customers in the bar

After a long walk in Kinder Scout, we stopped at the pub where I had my first fish and chips—they were delicious. However, the place was incredibly busy.
