Second visit to this lovely village pub. The occasion was a wine night with four small plates of food accompanied by four delicious wines accompanied with wine notes from Dan, the wine sommelier at Small Beers Ltd, Lincoln. What a fabulous evening! All four food courses were just wonderful, full of different flavours bouncing about on your tongue; scallops and king prawns to start, sea bass to follow, medium rare sirloin next and a strawberry and basil panna cotta to finish, all enhanced by Dans outstanding wine pairings. With a glass of bubbly provided upon arrival, all the above for £35 per head, incredible value for money! We drove there in our Motorhome which we were allowed to park overnight on their car park with a lovely dog friendly field adjacent to it. Sam Harrison is the amazing driving force behind these efforts, ably assisted by his fantastic team, both front and back of house. An outstanding job guys, we’ll be back and heartily recommend this place.

This pub is a typical locals English pub for pretentious folk. I travel the world with business and came here for a business trip and do not recommend it for anyone outside the village. Rude staff, rude service and attitude that does not match its location at all. I expected much much better. Quite honestly felt embarrassed by my country

We enjoyed lunch today at The Dovecote. The menu was varied and I had the sea bass with fennel and crushed new potatoes - something different from the run of the mill menus that are often offered in pubs these days. Beautiful setting too.

Went for a Sunday Lunch . Lovely fresh food , everything hot but could have done with more than one roast and 2 thin slices of pork . Felt a little aggrieved to pay a £3 surcharge for beef of lamb especially when the mains cost £16.95

Stayed at this place a few weeks back and this will be my last stay here. Was made to feel extremely unwelcome and felt extremely uncomfortable as possible maybe my face did not fit!! The owners are extremely rude and especially Sopie the co-owner I believe was extremely vicious when I told her about the numerous problem we had to which she responded “ don’t bother coming here again as your not welcome” and she said this in a vicious way with other connotations meant by it I feel!! Avoid this place at all costs!!

Nice pub, nice location, stayed for 1 night. Warm welcome. Room is not attached to the pub but a very short walk away. Clean and well presented except for the table with the tea and coffee canisters which was badly stained. Not a good first impression. Dined in the pub and the young lady who served us was really pleasant and helpful. Food was ok. It was very dark upon leaving the room to the pub and the stairs to the outside door were not very well lit, nor were the first few steps down towards the car park, had to use torch mode on mobile phone to navigate, it was only the last few steps that the security light kicked in and we could see the few remaining steps. Difficult if you’re not familiar with the layout. Breakfast is continental, served in the room and such a lovely idea but the noise from the fridge in the room was an issue as was the radiator heat indicator which illuminated the room like a beacon through the night so had to be switched off! Really want to like this place but would we stay again…. Probably not🙁

Thank goodness for reviews, that's how I found this gem! As we get older, we with our friends, travel the globe less, but we do still like to meet up and have a good old fashioned chat. It was my job to find a location for an overnight stay with food. Simple.. not in the area of Newark which is approx half way between Cambridge & North Yorkshire. First the welcome, this was Sam and his smile, it comes from the eyes. Quickly and efficiently we are shown our rooms. Large, spacious and very well equipped. As we all arrive we gather in the bar. Good quality ale and fizz, select our table and before long we are back in our rooms getting ready for a meal and more time together. Meal excellent, food excellent, service excellent. 100% recommendation from our crowd.

The food was absolutely delicious. My family of 6 ordered 6 main courses. The steak was cool to perfection and obtained a meat heavenly taste. The tomato soup appeared home cooked but was a thousand times nicer than the traditionally used Heinz tomato soup. The fish and chips was brought out and was ten times the size as previously predicted, it had a crispy batter and had the perfect ratio of batter to fish. The stir fry was evenly cooked with a plethora of flavours. The dovey burger was extremely fresh and contained a delicious taste. Although the meal took longer than expected, the wait was definitely worth it. I would definitely dine there again and would recommend to friends.

We were staying in Laxton, so had to try the 2 courses for £20 deal, which by todays standards is very reasonable! 2 couples, we had Beef and Pork roast, all was really nice. Only slight criticism was needed more roasties and veg. We had sticky toffee pudding with custard, which was a joy. Doggy friendly too which is a bonus!

My husband and I were really looking forward to a lovely Sunday lunch. Disappointed. The place itself was fine. The service was pleasant but as for the food. My husband had beef which he commented “ I’ve had much better” and he listed numerous pubs and restaurants. I had chicken breast and I have to say “ I have never had tough chicken breast before”. We both like our veg firm. Our veg was basically uncooked. As for the dessert. Homemade apple pie and ice cream, play it safe. Bland under cooked pastry and to top it all we’re certain it had been microwaved to heat up. Will we go again, will we recommend. It’s a real shame, but No. Chris. H.

Our stay at the Dovecote Inn in Laxton was fantastic. The staff were amazing and always really helpful. We stayed for two nights and our stay was great throughout. Accomodation: The rooms were very clean and well equipped for visitors. The rooms were cleaned thoroughly every day. Breakfast service was reasonable with a decent variety of options but no hot food. So it did feel like we missed a hot breakfast but there was certainly enough for food for us anyway. They provided things like muffins, porridge pots, hot drinks + juices, cereal, milk, bread and pastries. Food: Our two dinners in the pub were really good. The vegetarian options were a bit limited however the chef offered to cook other options which was very kind. The vegetarian spaghetti bolognese and the vegetarian burger were both delicious. The service was quick, attentive and polite. There was also a quiet bar area where we could sit for pre- and post-dinner drinks. People: The owners were very nice and helpful when asking questions about the local area. Furthermore, the servers gave us bread and butter every evening after dinner (for breakfast).

Other people must agree as it was a Wednesday night and the pub was busy! It's so lovely to see a village pub doing so well and acting as the heart of the community. We brought our 6 week old with us and had plenty of space to put the pram. The friendly atmosphere meant that it was a really comfortable environment to breast feed in. We had a really disappointing evening at the Dovecote . Five of us were meeting up after not seeing each other for nearly 2 years and having had wonderful meals there in the past we decided on Laxton .The menu was very limited with no specials board and the food we were served was very poor .The chicken ,leek , panceta pie was topped with mash and came with mashed potatoes (?) and gravy (?) The pie was poor - very grizzly ! Other meals were adequate though not the standard we were hoping for .One of the deserts , and the choice was very limited , wasn't available. The substitute was a fruit yoghurt which consisted of yoghurt plus 1 strawberry, 1 raspberry and chunks of still frozen other ( unidentifiable) fruit + shortbread biscuit .Such a disappointment. I know that we won't be visiting again soon .I was visiting friends from North Yorkshire but the other 4 customers live locally. It's a beautiful pub in a fabulous location but it will lose more customers if the quality of the food doesn't improve .

Booked a table for 5.30 on Saturday 29th May online. It was early but we had plans for later that evening and thought we could have a nice bar meal. It was a bit chaotic when we arrived and several members of staff rushed passed us before the barmaid acknowledged our presence and told a waitress to help us. We asked if there was a specials board and the waitress told us that the restuarant was fully booked for a la carte meals and that the chef was very stressed so there were no specials. We were shown to our table and then ignored. Eventually, after asking for our order to be taken we decided on the salt and pepper chicken for starter and the fish and chips for our main. We thought it would be helpful to the chef if we ordered the same dishes. The starter was burnt. And I mean cremated! The chef must have a Hadron Collider for an oven and lost the operating instructions. Apart from that the starter was really strange as it consisted of a chicken breast, some salad leaves and two dabs of sauce. Even if cooked properly it did not seem restuarant worthy. We scraped the carbon off the chicken, ate what we could and informed the waitress that it was not great. Her reply was that she would pass on our comments. After another long wait the main course arrived. The fish and chips were overcooked but several shades lighter than the “dark matter” starter. However, the chips were greasy, the batter was soggy. The fish itself was very nice as was the mushy peas.No dessert was ordered (we could not be bothered with the wait) but would have been welcomed to degrease our taste buds. No coffees either. When the bill came a different waitress asked if we enjoyed our meal and we explained about the starter and she said she would pass on our comments, again. The starter had NOT been deducted from the bill.In hindsight, I think the chef resented us booking a table early on a Saturday night as he would have been busy preparing for the a la carte menu and just threw out some crud to put us off doing it again. Lesson learned. Not going back. There are many restaurants around here to chose from and the ones we have tried so far have been streets ahead of the Dovecot.

Yes, the food did take a little while to arrive, but this wasn't a problem as it was cooked fresh and was first class pub food. The pies were to die for and the gravy/sauce was delicious. We all shared 2 chocolate brownie desserts and concluded that the whole experience was great value for money. We will return.

We heard that The Dovecoate was doing fish and chips every Wednesday, so thought why not try it. It went down a treat. Loved it and it definitely be a regular thing. Came with a small pot of curry sauce to dip your chips in to, very nice. All in all food was great no complaints, reasonably priced, staff are always friendly and it’s always good to go to a local country pub just round the corner. So you all again.

Set in a lovely village. The food was ok but is a little hyped up and quite pricey for a lunch. Also had to wait and ask for a vegetarian menu which should be offered within the everyday menu. Would visit again but only on special occasions

Went for a late sunday lunch with family. 5 of us altogether. On arrival we were told that they had run out of beef and lamb leaving just belly pork as the roast meat menu option. However chicken was was offered as a replacement extra. 3 of us had pork and 2 had chicken. We waited over an hour for the main courses to arrive. The pork was tiny. Literally only a few mouthfulls. The chicken was a normal size and we split some of that amongst the pork eaters. The food was tasty and fresh. We asked for extra veg as the one dish provided was not enough for 5. This was delivered quickly along with extra gravy. Judging by other reviews we were unlucky with the wait and the tiny pork portions. The restaurant was not that busy so clearly we were waiting for the meat to be cooked. At the outset we were going to have puddings but after ws had been there so long waiting for mains we decided to give that a miss. Barring the wait service was ok but not really with a smile. I would say be careful in booking a sunday roast table late in the day.

Thank you for some lovely home cooked food in your dog friendly pub. We had excellent main courses but were sadly too full to sample the desserts. We really enjoyed our food.

We live locally and decided to visit after a change in management. After a slight hitch with our booking we were shown to a table. We mixed and matched off the Festive and A La Carte menus. The game terrine was delicious as was the duck liver pate. The portions were very generous and needed extra bread (no extra charge ). The slow cooked belly pork with back pudding Bon Bon melted in the mouth. The chicken burger was well cooked and very soft and juicy. The staff were polite, friendly and very helpful on what was a very busy night. Will be visiting again.

This tastefully modernised pub offers excellent accommodation, and everything you need for a good continental breakfast. The pub food is really outstanding and good value. Timmy Taylors Lanslord at £4 a pint is a bit of a shock.Onr reservation: it was a cold day when we stayed, and the electric wall heater was slow and inadequate.

What a rare find, we were attending a wedding reception not far from Laxton & this seemed a perfect choice. We were not disappointed, on arrive we didn't wait long to be shown to our room. It was warm, cosy & had everything we needed. Beautiful fresh bedding, big towels as well as dressing gowns. The bathroom was a good size with a walk in shower & spotlessly clean. A continental breakfast was included & this was to be eaten in the room & anything that we ate was topped up again for the following day. Lots of lovely goodies that we ate throughout our stay (big thank you for that) We also had Dinner on the night that we arrive & this was delicious, Beer battered haddock, hand-cut fat chips, minted pea puree, tartare sauce, best we've had in a long time. Followed by White Chocolate & Raspberry Cheesecake, white chocolate powder & a raspberry sorbet, oh my goodness that was the best cheescake I've ever eaten !! My husband had the Mixed Berry Eton Mess. Excellent value for money, attentive service from Abbey & a first class place to stay & eat. We shall return.

We have stayed here twice. The first time was to explore Laxton, the last remaining place in England still using the strip farming system. The second time was for a 'Chef's Evening' because the food was so good. A three course meal was served with the chefs on hand afterwards to explain the dishes and offer the recipes. An excellent evening.

Ten of us had been walking and a few of the gang often pop in here. We were pretty hungry and thirsty and turned up at 12.30pm to find an handwritten note on the door that said; closed! The website said open. Unfortunately the first time we tried this place it was not a good experience however it has been taken over. Maybe it is me lol. Closing a pub at lunchtime with no warning to the customers is not good business. Apparently the new owners were on holiday?

We visited as a group of four couples for a reunion of old friends. Every single one of us thought our meals was excellent without a single complaint or gripe. The service was great courteous helpful and on obtrusive. It's a lovely place we had a room with views over open countryside. Well done.

We are currently staying in a wonderful cottage in the village of Laxton and was recommended to visit Dove Cote Inn the owner booked it for us. We had a warm welcome and was shown to our table . A young waitress took our order, the rustic bread starter was fabulous. I ordered the Massanam curry my husband the steak. I was enjoying the curry when I saw something move on my plate I looked again to see a bug crawling on my plate. I quickly covered it with my serviette and my husband went to the bar to a,alert them. The manager came over and very quietly I showed him the creature that was still moving in fact it crawled on to his hand. He apologised took my plate away.

Birthday luncheon, we hadn't planned to come here, we met a butcher at Rutland show, he had just opened a bistro in Sherwood, unfortunately is was not open today. Being probably the hottest day of the year I did not want to travel too far, we have seen Launay's on a previous visit to Edwinstowe. We were the on dinners in the restaurant. I found the chairs a little too low and not quite supportive. Starters which we share were salmon wasabi pea puree and fennel citrus sperified balls, absolutely fantastic then chorizo cumberland and a wonderfully cooked egg. Mains, fried pulled pork and a sousvide steak, I had to try it because I sousvide at home, however I felt that it lacked taste and was a little dry. the tomato relish was pretty good, served in an old marmalade jar. dessert was to die for, basil cheesecake with micro lemon balm Definitely be back to ravage the a la carte menu

Four very nice meals. We had a rib eye steak, pie of the day, vegetarian wellington, & liver & bacon. Well presented & served with a smile. Waited about 25 minutes - good time for fresh tasty food. Followed by sticky toffee pudding & cheesecakes. Nothing left on plates! Clean throughout with ample close by parking. Thank you. Very reasonable prices. Will return.

Went for Sunday lunch with family. All the staff were brilliant and the atmosphere was good - nice to have a pianist playing while we ate. However the vegan version of the roast dinner wasn’t great. There was a nut roast listed on the website menu however when we got there it had been replaced by a different option. It was a spiced cauliflower patty which tasted good but didn’t fit on a roast dinner IMO. We were told that the mash wasn’t vegan so we would get extra roast potatoes instead, but we only got three small roasties each and when we queried this, we were told you usually only get two. The greens were inconsistent; I had a pile of kale while my cousin had green beans. The carrots and parsnips were rock hard (and cooked with honey so not truly vegan). The vegan dinner felt a bit measly compared to the others, with very little effort to substitute items or present a filling plate of food worth the price tag.

Gentleman welcomed us and was so helpful and accommodating. Beautifully decorated for autumn/Halloween. Comfortable bay seating. Couple of steps into cafe, toilets upstairs. Wonderful porridge and extensive breakfast combo menu. Great food and lovely staff in a pretty cafe, could not ask for more.
