Dougie's Fish and Chips in Harrogate

Visited early evening after a long time of absence and found no change in the presentation and ambiance. Ordered 1 x F n C which when plated at home, could painfully see they were overcooked and dry. Once again it will be a long time before returning to what once used to be the best chippie in Harrogate.

My most recent visit to Dougies was 2 weeks ago, when I pre-ordered 3 lightly battered light bite meals. Informed it would be ready by 6.00, but it wasn’t, and I had to wait. When I got home to eat, having requested the fish to be very lightly battered, it wasn’t. Have been a loyal customer for many years, but I’m afraid after this, will try other chippies in the area. An alternative chippie we used recently, had very efficient staff working as normal the other side of the counter, whereas Dougies still have the ‘protective’ screen on the counter, with the polystyrene tray to put cash in and change out. I don’t think it’s been changed for months, so how many ‘bugs’ are living on that? There is also the mask mandate on the wall as you go in. Don’t they realise they can’t do this any longer, and it’s a matter of personal choice?

We hadn't been to Dougies since before the pandemic, but decided on Friday evening to get a takeaway and eat it in the car. We were delighted that it is still as good as it ever was. The fish was exceptional, the chips excellent, the price reasonable, the service friendly, efficient and happy. We think it is probably the best in Harrogate.

I stopped going to dougies years ago because the staff were told to ignore me and serve their mate. Well guess what it happened again only this time to me and another in the queue. I must be a fool to return there again. It's a chippie for locals only. How dare you treat people like that! To sum up, rude and no manners.

We had some nice fish and chips,staff very friendly and helpful. Keep it up.You can ring your order in which is good too.

I ordered fishcake and chips the chips were nice but the fishcake was awful refried from lunchtime and the lady I spoke to on the phone said I probably use asda own brand ready meals!!!! What if I do or do not it does not excuse a refried fishcake

Called in to get some fish & chips, curry sauce & battered sausages. Everything tasted delicious. Staff were extremely friendly as always.

Used the new "pre-order & collect" this evening. Called at 16.25 and got told my order would be ready for 16.40. Arrived at 16.45 and asked for my order, only then did they start cooking it. Had to wait in line for 15 minutes for my food. What's the point in ordering beforehand?......

fast friendly service, we had a very large order (for 10) they were very experienced we had plenty of choice and everyone was helpful

I've had a few bad takeaways here recently and I am not returning half cooked fish curry sause is like water chips are soggy and a dead fly in my chips and my neighbours had a bad food from here too. dougie has retired and it's gone to pot.

Overcooked, dry mankey fish, with too much batter and the chips were cold and old. Will never go there again.

Dougie's is good old fish and chips at a very reasonable price. If you want poncey overpriced poser food go up to town. We eat here regularly and it never lets you down.

I have used this particular fish & chip shop for as long as I can remember. Not once has it let me down on superbly fried fish & chips. I would go as far as to say that if I have noticed a difference since dear Dougie moved on then it is only a continuing improvement in service and quality. Well done to the new Manager, Dougie trained him well. The one thing I miss is the warm, personal greeting Dougie always offered.

Very good food & service however only one small problem their website needs updating to show the current food prices etc

Very nice fish and chips but a little more expensive than other fish and chip shops in the area. Found it difficult to park as IN a residential area. Very nice fish and chip shop if you live in the Bilton area of Harrogate.

excellent fish and chips recently came third in yorkshire so can,t be bad. my wife and i have fish and chips from Dougies and i can truly say they are very very good.

Very good fish & chips takeaway but I did prefer it when Dougie was running the place. My only issue is that they should update their website to specify the correct selling costs of their food

From my previous comment I feedback that the fish was excellent but the chips seemed under cooked and slimy.

Went to Dougies for Saturday night tea, it was very busy but that is always a good sign. The shop was run by a group of young lads but they were all very polite. I ordered a special haddock which was very fresh and white. Me and my Gran were very impressed, however the chips were a big disappointment, they were pale and slimy.

Change of ownership, but not name!. The old Dougie's were brilliant, the new, unfortunately did not live up to the mark. it was 12.40, the shop was empty, and there were 3 fish, already fried, and under the 'heater' I asked if the fish was...

It's a few years since I'd been here, but passing by I called in to reacquaint myself with what we're the best fish and chips in Harrogate. The batter was excellent, but the fish was no more than adequate. It was really dry and a bit chewy and not a delight to eat. The mushy peas had a dreadful texture. Chips were only average. These were no better than my local shop and won't hurry back here.

At one time You used to go out of your way to get Dougies Fish and Chips. Sadly this is no longer the case. I have just bought some of the , if not the, worst fish and chips ever. The fish were greasy, greasy, greasy, and the smelt and tasted too strong to be even considered fresh. One bite and straight in the bin. For a family of four not cheap, and not an experience I will be repeating.

Dougie's earns its local reputation well. They do indeed provide Fish & Chips of truly superb quality. Never been disappointed yet, and don't expect to be anytime soon.

A superb fish supper, just freshly cooked whilst in the queue. Quick service with a smile, and worth passing other places to get to Dougi when in Harrogate.

One of the best chip shops in Harrogate, great staff especially Anthony. Get there early, Friday nights shuts at 7:30.

Bring back Dougie! It's not the same since he retired/left. Some of the current staff need more training especially how to cook & serve fish & chips. Plus we do live in Yorkshire who traditionally eat Haddock so why not serve both?!

Normally getting my fish and chips from here. I went into dougies I arrived at 6:15 and waited for over ten minutes in the que and closing time being 6:30. When the woman finally asked me if I wanted any fish she said its 25 minutes past 6 and they're closing. Furiously I left. Not happy at all

Just the best fish & chips in Harrogate in my opinion. Not greasy, beautifully cooked especially their Light Bite which is a smaller portion great if you find the normal size rather filling. This is a Take Away not a Restaurant.

So we ordered two portions of chicken nuggets, three portions of chips and a portion of scampi £14 approx. We got home and found that we had one portion of chips, and only three singular chicken nuggets(?!), and a portion of scampi. We ate what we had as we were hungry and made a complaint. The chippy responded quickly and said we could go and collect the rest of the order (x2 portions of chips and the rest of the chicken nuggets) I went in to ask for the order they had got wrong and explained I was collecting them on behalf of my dad. The lady looked at me like I was an idiot but then said 'oh chicken nuggets!'. I replied with 'yes and the chips' I was handed a bag, they apologised for the mistake and I left. Returned home to find no chicken nuggets and just chips?! Waste of money and time. I would not recommend. Two stars is generous.

We got our fish and chips from Dougies last night. We haven't had them for a while. They where as always delicious. The fish and chips where all fresh and tasted great. I don't think we have ever been disappointed with a visit to Dougies ! The staff where friendly and helpful.

We had a appointment at the wrong end of town and therfore we chose to go here for our fish supper.I could not fault the fish batter was crisp well cooked cod the chips were crisp with fluffy insides we had scraps and these were not the normal grey mess but where.light and crisp.The cue was a bit long but the young lads who were serving were well trained looked tidy and where very pleasant and efficient. Well done will be back.

We used to live in Harrogate and so Dougie's was a regular place to visit. Having moved away five years ago we were eager to return as in our opinion there is no place quite like Dougie's for quality fish and chips anywhere near our home and maybe even in the British Isles! The quality has not deteriorated in the years we have been away and we were just as happy with the quality and size of portions as we were when we lived close by. Highly recommended for really top quality Fish and Chips at really keen prices.

Bilton is the best part of Harrogate. We have the best primary schools, the best walks, fantastic cycling tracks, and in Dougie's, we're also leading the rest of the town in terms of haute cuisine.Open for just a few short (too short) hours per day, and not even every day, long queues are common as the fish-and-chip devotees gather to satisfy their craving for the crispiest batter, juiciest fish and most divine potato chips. Two other great things worth knowing. The first relates to situations in which you need your f & c fix, but the rest of the family want a Chinese. No problem! Park up, go to Tak Yan on the next corner, place your order, hop over to Dougie's and grab your meal, then back to Tak Yan. I've tried it at least 10 times - it runs like clockwork.Second thing, you're out of beer/wine to go with your meal, so on your way back from Tak Yan, pop into McColl's on the opposite corner. Not the best convenience store admittedly, but they always have a decent stock of cold beverages in their fridges.

The bloke only opens a couple of hours a day as far as I can tell and they queue around the corner. Well worth the wait though, in my opinion the best you can get without going to the coast.

What a find this small fish and chi shop is down a small street on a row of houses and people were queuing outside . Fabulous fish and chips sausage and chips they did everything from fish black pudding haggis pies scraps so much more . So friendly as well highly recommend it .

Having lived in Harrogate for some 15 years and tried nearly all of the Fish and chip shops in the area Dougies has now become my regular choice, always a decent portion guaranteed and friendly service.

Called in thursday 8th Oct teatime, i am a weekly Harrogate fish and chip eater but this fish batter just didnt seem cooked right, seemed somewhat undercooked, no crispness. When i unwrapped them the paper was well stuck to the batter and the underside of the batter seemed a little raw. Cant fault the chips though. However at 5.45 a portion i would want them perfect. will give u another try soon...

Visitor from Canada to my cousin's "local" (not for the first time! Always consistently good fish, freshly cooked, good chips (loved the scraps too) Portions generous. So you have to queue, shows its good and the staff you get through fast. Thoroughly recommend.A fish and chips addict.

Slightly biased given this is out local and 'go to' chippy, I have to tip my cap to Dougie!. Always great quality and pretty much freshly cooked - always asked whilst in the queue what you want to ensure it's freshly cooked. You will not be disappointed!.

First lunchtime visit was Friday 27th March. We will be returning lunchtime today for our monthly payday treat. Huge portions. Yummy!

Second time we have been here now as it's not often we indulge in fish and chips. I'd forgotten how amazing these fish and chips are! I thought it the first time and the second visit did not disappoint. The fish is beautiful - perfect batter, melt in the mouth! We had a battered sausage as well which was also great! Perfect portions - plenty of yummy chips, delicious curry sauce! We ordered a small portion for our grandma which was the perfect size for her. I will never go to any other fish and chip shop as long as Dougies is here! Staff are lovely, efficient and generous :) never been so impressed by a takeaway before!

our last trip to the UK took us to Harrogate where we experienced British heritage at its best..... Spotless premises with good old fish and chips served with pride! Hard to fault with being great value and quality....... Brilliant!

Really good fish and chips. Expect to queue as they don't have long opening times which is a bit disappointing. Not the cheapest and take away only but the fish is really fresh so well worth a visit.

i use this Fish and Chip shop even though it is almost a 20 mile round trip from the village I live in. Always good value for money and big portion sizes. Definitely the best around.

Visited this little chippy shop when we were in Harrogate this evening. Ordered large fish chips & gravy but found no sauce when we drive back to hotel...Food was nice. Just a bit disappointed haven't got what we paid for. Probably the shop was just too busy?

I used to live on Albany road and dougies was my local chippy. Lots of people rave about Oliver's and gravely's in town. But, they don't compare to dougies. Best chips in harrogate and possibly Yorkshire. I've not found better. Great taste and a good price. He loves what he does and it shows. There's a good reason there is ALWAYS a qeue. ITS BECAUSE ITS THE BEST CHIP SHOP AROUND. THE PEOPLE OF HARROGATE SALUTE YOU DOUGIE!

It's our local chippy - how lucky are we? I know people who travel quite a distance to come here. Always excellent with huge portions. (We split our chips between 2 and there is still plenty !). Dougie and his team are always welcoming. Quite often a queue out of the door, not that it takes long to be served.

We love you! Thanks to dougies we have grown from slightly plump midlanders to well fat northeners. Thanks :) crispy batter and the most massive fish.

Not your traditional Fish And Chips if you ask me, IIs Cod, popular because marketed as the one to haveOver rated.

Consistently good fish and chips, always busy and Dougie is very welcoming, only downside is they close on Monday and Tuesdays.

Always more than meets expectations! I live locally, & my favourite is the 'lite bite', coming with a half portion of chips - just right for me. (You can also ask for the fish to be lightly battered). My sons - both of whom have gargantuan appetites - struggle to eat the 'standard' potions of fish & chips! Freshly cooked to order, and service with lots of smiles. Keep up the great work Dougie & staff!

One our final night in Harrogate, we were looking for a simple supper and having read the reviews thought we would give Dougie's a go - and we were not disappointed. Great Fish (I didn't bother with chips, although my travel companions did and all gave a resounding thumbs up) and all this despite getting back to our accommodation and realising there was not a grain of salt to be had...duh.

This is my local fish and chip shop. The chips are cooked to my liking, so not too greasy. The fish are massive. The majority of the time they have good sized fish and it's a challenge to finish it all. The curry sauce is divine. Dougies is the best fish and chips in Harrogate...no wonder or doesn't have to open for long!

Visited after reading Trip Advisor reviews. Adopted a cautious approach and ordered just two portions instead of 4. Needless to say we had to go back for more!!!! Absolutely delicious and the service was brilliant too. We will definitely be back when next in the area and i suggest anyone who enjoys great fish and chips does the same too! Thanks Dougie and Co.

This is definitely well worth a visit. I have never been disappointed with the quality of the food or the quantity.

Worth the wait (there's usually a queue!). We buy traditional fish and chips and not much else from Dougie's, but we've never been disappointed - also the place is spotlessly clean, and the service friendly and polite. Highly recommended.

Love this place! Only downside is it needs to be open more!! And maybe some out-door seating in summer?

Having used Dougies for a number of years I have always found the food to be excellent, maybe the odd dip when Dougies himself isn't there but on the whole excellent. I'll still keep going back can't beat them Mmmmmm.

I know a lot people are complaining about greasy fish and cold chips but the staff wont be offence'd. The staff will replace it for you! I think its pretty stupid when they dont complain to face to face.But i think this is the Best Fish and Chips i have ever had, i always have this once a week or once every two weeks... Battered Sausage,Chips,Curry and Bread bun are my favourite! Keep up people! You never disapoint me! Everything is perfect apart from Dougie not being there anymore:( Staff are very polite:)

I wrote the first review back in 2008 and still enjoy the best chippie in Harrogate.I can't believe the negative comments as the assistants would have been so disapointed you never complained face to face as i know they would have replaced them so don't be put off and enjoy Dougies fish and chips.

Visited Dougies following excellent reviews from friends and family. Staff and service excellent. However the food did not meet my expectations. The chips were very hard and my kids could not eat them. There is crispy and then there is hard!!!. Maybe it was just a bad day!

Well it is with great regret that i have to update my review and sadly NOT for the Batter !! oops a mean Better.. for years we have used Dougies fish n chip shop. We then moved but still carried on travelling to the shop only to find the standard of the food had gone "Down Hill" the fish used to be chunky n lightly battered and a decent size worth the Money, the chips golden an fresh, now the Fish is more like a over battered greasy "Goldfish" and the chips have more black eye's that a boxer having fought Tyson ...... The one good thing about the shop is the Customer service IS 2nd to none and Dougie himself did try to reslove the problem .......... but sadly Dougie your supplier is letting you down and the prices do NOT reflect the food no more, sorry we have moved onto another.

The staff were extremely polite and efficient. The food was cooked to perfection and the atmosphere whilst I was waiting was good. I can See why people say Dougies is the best fish and chip shop. It really is brilliant.

.., for fish n chips in Harrogate. We use another and, we were persuaded to try Dougies by friends and, by the awards Dougies has won in the past. Also, by the queue outside sometimes.... Apologies but, we did not see what the fuss was about, greasy and not particularly tasty to be honest, sorry but we went straight back to our other regular.

Had the biggest fish ever,staff appologised for having to break the fish to fit in the enourmous tray,lovely chips to go with it and nice eating area outside to eat them.

We hadnt been to Dougie's for about 18 months after a couple of uninspiring visits, went a couple of weeks ago and everything seems to be back to normal.Fast friendly service, and great fish and chips.
