I usually go to another chippy when I visit southport but I'd seen a few reviews on the southport eats group recommending Dolphin. So decided today was the day. They do a lunchtime fish and chips for £5.95. Now you may find that when these type of deals are offered, you can get a small meal but not here. It was a good portion, the fish was lightly battered and was just right. Everything was hot and fresh too. You can add mushy peas for an extra 75p which I did (well you can't have fish and chips without mushy peas). I also love a bit of curry so decided on the Chinese curry. This had a lovely flavour and is one of the nicest I've had in a while. Will definetly go here again Food: 5/5 | Service: 5/5

Work un social care and took a group of adults with special needs. The staff and owner are absolutely fantastic, nothing was to much trouble for them. A brilliant experience and would recommend to anyone, oh yeh.... the food was amazing x

It's hidden away in a passage off Lord Street, it's well worth finding. The fish was excellent with crispy batter. Service is really friendly.

We went to take away with grandchildren. Ordered a small fish and chips. 3 fussy children devoured both chips and fish. Grandson said chips were even better than schools (which he loves) . Food was cooked fresh so tasty and hot. Owner was great too.

Yet again 'the dolphin' did not disappoint. Visiting Southport for a few days, we always call in at our favourite chippy in Southport. Always so welcoming, by all the staff they are so nice and so helpful. One or two elderly people came in on frames and straight away the dark haired lady went to help them in. It is this kindness and thought fullness that makes 'the dolphin' special. We had fish and chips and they were perfect! Fish, crispy batter so crunchy not at all soggy, chips again well cooked and delicious. We had the meal deal including a drink this time, we usually have the senior meal offer but thought we would have a change, it's so difficult to decide!! The steak pie is so delicious too and the apple pie!! Thank you to all, we had a super lunch and yes we will be returning when next in Southport!

I like proper fish and chips the way mother use to make . These were to perfection crispy on the outside with fluffy inner chips. The fish bater was just right not dowsed but just covered and stayed crisp to the last bite Eat your heart out Harry Ramsden there's are far better HERE The best I have ever had and I'm just a grumpy old gent And the lady served us with smile was Brilliant

Fabulous food, fabulous value. The portions were enormous and everything was piping hot when brought to the table. The staff were so friendly and helpful, especially with our 16 month old grandson. We will certainly be recommending and re-visiting when in Southport.

Fabulous spotlessly clean chippy. Really nice chips and piping hot too. Got served by a lovely South African girl who I chatted to as I love the food over there! Had some nice desserts but were full from the chips and we'd planned a chippy crawl that day so wanted to get a few places in. Would definitely recommend it as I love a sit down chippy!

Staying at Travelodge in Southport for a few days. The dolphin is close by off lord street, (there is a sign on lord street to show the way.) we have eaten before at the dolphin and enjoyed the meal, but we have never tried the senior option. (As we both now qualify for the over 60s, thought we would give it a try. I chose the small portion of fish and chips, mushy peas and a slice of bread and butter, my friend the steak pie option. Wow, what can I say!! What a meal!! Everything was beautiful and hot, my fish batter especially was the lightest ever! Fish was white as white. My friends pie was full of meat and gravy, thick and delicious then complemented by the beautiful chips, and mushy peas. ( I was even offered tartare sauce too with the fish) . All the pies were home made.Our bellies were full. Then the waitress who was so friendly and helpful said we could have apple pie or ice cream which came with the senior. Well who can say no to apple pie! Well I can't. We both had a slice of apple pie and cream. The pie was also delicious and had been just nicely warmed up. Can't praise the staff enough. The dolphin was spotlessly clean, the staff when not busy even cleaned the windows.!! Will return again and certainly recommend to anyone, and thank them for making my friends dog, welcome and also for giving the dog, a free sausage. Thank you all.

Got a leaflet from guy on main Street advertising small fish and chips 5pound25p with apple pie did not want apple pie so had 2cans Cola bill came to 23pound 98pence .complained got 2/50 off the bill👎

Staff were very friendly and helpful especially as my partner is in a wheelchair, they couldn’t do enough for us. Great disabled access and accessible toilet which is a plus. Food was good value for money and very tasty, the steak pie was to die for, we would definitely recommend and will return on our next visit to Southport

this was my second visit to the Dolphin, first occasion my and a friend had the steak pie with chips etc, it was so good we decided to go again and try the fish and chips to see what they was like or had we just been lucky with the pie. Well the meal was ordered and served by very polite staff, nothing was too much for them to make sure you enjoyed your visit for some really wonderful food, the fish was mega, it covered the plate and unfortunately half of it was eaten before I thought of taking the photo, (sorry for that) Whitby is the next biggest fish I have seen on a plate. Chips was very nice with the mushy pea's bread and butter along with coffee for a modest £11:85 I have seen places charging £15 - £18 for less, and bread and butter was extra. I really can't thank the staff enough for a very pleasant experience, one will remember the joke (my plaice or yours) pointing at the fish. Thank you and trust me I will be back. 7 star rating.....

Me and my disabled partner Diane came at lunch we sat in i order fish n chips my partner had the homemade fishcake and chips both with mushy peas was delicious wish the fish had been a bit bigger as was so good and i have a big appetite but was excellent service i had coke and diane had hot chocolate with marshmallow total bill £25.40p will return

We went in at 12.00 for an early lunch. Warm welcome from the staff including the fryer. We had the special fish and chips which includes a drink, and piece of bread and butter with regular fish size and mushy peas. We both absolutely enjoyed our meal. Everything was delicious the fish batter was so light and crispy and chips tasty and well cooked through. It is a while since we have been to the dolphin and had forgotten how good it is. Definitely be back when revisiting Southport, and highly recommend anyone visiting, if you want a chippy meal. The dolphin is the place.

Went to this restaurant after a day out in Southport. What a friendly place. They did a senior special menu which was really reasonably priced . Our waitress was Thea who was excellent. The food came quickly and was really tasty and there was plenty of it. Can highly recommend this little gem of a restaurant.

We had the good value fish special. The 'small' seemed almost as big as the 'regular', both were generous portions. Batter was lovely and crispy. Service was quick and very friendly. Some of the best fish and chips we've ever had!

Went for a lunch time meal here. It was lovely staff were very friendly, food was very fresh and delicious. 3 of the group had the senior meal deal and enjoyed it very much. Said it was definitely worth it. Portion sizes were very good. Would definitely recommend and next time am in Southport would definitely go back.

So lucky that this was the first fish and chip shop we came to after finding a parking place. We had the fish and chips with a slice of bread and butter and a drink and wished we had gone for the smaller portions. The bread and butter didn't get touched. The fish was superb and everything was beautifully cooked; some of the best fish and chips we have ever had. The service was very friendly and quick. Highly recommend.

Second time here, had the pensioners special, I had chicken, chips, mushy peas and gravy, it was delicious, my husband had fish with bread and butter, apple pie and cream £8.95 each , the staff are lovely, we'll be back thank you.

I can not rate this place high enough. All food is fresh, good quality and cooked to perfection. All staff that served our party of 14 were friendly, polite and efficient. Its hard to please 14 people of different ages but we all went away...

Had to wait for ages for fish & chips to takeaway, portions were very small, the chips were the worst I have tasted, very disappointing, not worth the money.

Have been tempted many times to dine here, so took the plunge and to be fair the fish and chips were very nice.

In my opinion you sadly got it wrong yesterday (01/05/2020). Customers waiting a very long time for takeaway food (45 mins + in our case) however customers eating in (sitting outside) served almost immediately. We thought it might have been worth the wait, we sadly got that wrong too.

Visited with my family for lunch. Safe to say, I’ll never WASTE my money here again! First off, a teenager couldn’t eat a kids meal?? And the staff refused to serve one to her Why???? A small fish and chips is enough to fill anyone! Had to buy numerous drinks as what is stated as full price PEPSI/COCA COLA, was indeed cheap, nasty carbonated cola. Out of date tomato sauce sachets, dirty toilets, dirty cutlery. For what doesn’t seem a busy THRIVING cafe and for the price! The food should be fresh and cafe should be clean at the least! Busy restaurants maintain this standard so for a small cafe not to be able too. Environmental health may need a call.

They make good food here, we usually pop up from Derbyshire when it's the holidays and stay at the seaview, go on the pier, and then eat tea here! The food is very appetizing and will come again.

The Dolphin restaurant is nothing special. I really don't know if it can even be qualified as a restaurant, but it claims to make the best fish & chips in the country, and it holds many awards, including the 10 best seafood restaurants in the north of England. If you like fish & chips and want to see if the legend is true, then try The Dolphin.

Nice chips and excellent mushy peas served with a pot of tea and bread and butter. The fish was a little bit dry but the batter was crispy. Friendly staff.

4th visit here and the other 3 were good but today was pretty poor four of us had the haddock specials 3 were ok my friends looked like all the chips were leftovers the fish was all batter and tasteless we declined to pay for her meal, we also noticed the person doing the cooking kept going outside for cigarette breaks, sadly won,t be going back

Wish I had read the other reviews before we visited, I asked if I could have a child’s meal as didn’t want a large portion only to be told no. Needn’t have worried piece of COD I got was tiny and at 8.25 I expected much more, it was also tasteless so was maybe a good thing there wasn’t much. The chips were soggy but decent quantity. Peas also tasteless and more like a cheap marrow fat than chip shop mushy. Soft drinks very pricy too and even more annoying that they came in polystyrene cups with plastic lids and straws, they should be using reusable glasses, at these prices you can afford to pay someone to wash them up. Will not return and suggest trying somewhere else!!

Traveled here today had food ordered a burger and chips and my burger bun was mouldy and the Service was absolutely disgusting Rude and abrupt. Absolutely disgusted!!!! A friend ordered a cheese and onion pie and it was like on omlett it was vile.

Where to start oh yes the dirty tea cup. Didn't make a fuss and I wish I had. Ordered food didn't have what I wanted but that was fine. Came out with completely the wrong thing. I asked again for what I ordered and the server disappeared to be seen outside chatting and messing around with a dog. She then brought my food out wrong again. Lost the will by this time. Now I asked for meat potato pie and gravy. 1st try cheese pie chips and gravy. 2nd try meat potato pie no gravy. So the bill came and I was charged 4.25 for one hollands meat and potato pie. I had to leave my husband to pay because o wanted to scream. Avoid if you value money.

This is a fish shop which has a restaurant on either side of the shop. The service was slow - the meals arrived at least 20 minutes after the drinks which had gone cold by this time. To say it is a fast food place it shouldn't have taken so long. One waitress spent most of our visit playing with her hair, very unhygienic. To get from the restaurant we were in to the toilets meant we had to walk through the kitchen, again very unhygienic and dangerous with children. Very overpriced for what it was and not worth it.

2 of us decided to have fish and chips in a traditional English establishment and although the table service was very friendly the food was awful. This is the worst fish and chips I've ever had.The cod was a decent size, lightly battered but totally tasteless. I would say it was frozen, certainly not fresh? The chips were greasy and had been previously cooked then dropped into cool oil to reheat then served. The best thing on the plate were the peas. £18.45 for 2 with a small paper cup of fake coke. Won't be going again

We had the £7.75 fish n chips with Apple pie and ice cream today. The cod was really firm and fresh, overall a a nice meal and fair value. The small pot of tea at £1.95 was a tad overpriced though.

I’d avoid this place if you don’t want to spend a small fortune on tasteless food, tiny cups of tea and pop in a polystyrene cup... massively overpriced for what you get. £3.95 for chips and gravy!!! I cannot work out how they could possibly charge that. It’s not even a particularly nice, attractive place to sit in.. the alternative is to sit outside where it smelt of wee. One staff member was lovely, however the rest had a face on (like I did when I got the bill) and didn’t even give so much as a thanks or bye upon leaving. Gutted we ended up eating here.

Always visit here when visiting Southport but will not be again. Two senior citizen cod, chips and peas at £7.75 each, two teas and free apple pie and ice cream as usual. But fish was just full of batter with the tiniest of fish inside. Chips were mainly scrapings. Service was not its usual standard. Very poor. Although it was not busy the staff were just chatting around the till, waited nearly fifteen minutes before we had our apple pie. Total cost of meal £19.40. Far too expensive today. Disappointing. Will not be returning. Better restaurants in Southport to eat, not too far away.

Fish and chips by the seaside, sounds great, but unfortunately it was anything but. I can honestly say that it was the worst Fish and Chips I have ever had the misfortune to eat. Greasy fish in half cooked batter and chips that were awful.

To expensive, food not great orderd fish which came smothered in batter. Agree with the other comment regarding the size of the tea and coffee cups, couldn’t get any smaller and then they charge £1-99. Don’t fall for it, plenty more and better places to eat for a lot less money.

Found this dog friendly restaurant just slightly off the main shopping street. The food was nicely cooked and tasted very good. Not the cheapest you can get but can’t complain about the quality and quantity. Would recommend.

Disappointed quick service but the cod was tasteless wasent not white fish but brown . Chips tasted raw couldent eat them . Young staff stood chatting whilst older staff working . Pleasant surroundings and staff served us straight away . But overpriced . Maybe should of mentioned at time but you hear that many horror stories decided not too . Hope they were just having off day

Most welcoming Staff to both of us and our dog today. Food good and plentiful! All the customers around us were of the same opinion, previous bad comments must have visited a different restaurant to us. Yes, there are toilets downstairs beautiful and clean, but for those unable to negotiate the stairs the are facilities on the ground floor. I’m sure some people are professional “whingers “. Well done the Dolphin!

I have been to this chippy many times, Les is a lovely member of staff. Lovely food and reasonably priced!

Had lunch here recently with extended family (9) and found it to be great value for money. The staff were helpful polite and experienced and the toilets spotless. The apple pie was offered but declined as we had eaten enough.

We had chicken and chips which was lovely they made a big fuss of our dog Bailey and gave him a large bowl of water which he enjoyed. The cafe was clean and tidy.

Both my son and I left half of our meal as it was inedible. The chips portion was made up of 50% of scraps - thin slivers of chips less than one inch in length, hidden under a few proper sized chips placed on top. The other components of the meal were similarly cheap and tasteless. When I complained, I was told I should have reported it before I started my meal. No refund was offered.

Great chippy with additional restaurant space if you want to sit in. The fish was especially lovely. Service with a smile! Love a chippy near the beach!

We were handed a flier advertising this restaurant on a recent trip to Southport. We needed some lunch so decided to give it a try. A delightful experience awaited us - we were greeted by very friendly staff, the meal took a few minutes to arrive but that's always a good sign (it means the fish has been cooked for you, not sitting in a heated cabinet for any length of time). All elements of the meal were excellent, the cod was really fresh, batter was crisp and the chips were delicious. We even had some free apple pie and ice cream afterwards (a special deal for seniors I think).

A great almost seafront fish and chip shop, very well cooked and a huge portion. Always fresh and nice to have the choice to eat in the restaurant.

Rather than going to our regular haunt after the fair we decided to visit the Dolphin Restaurant - it was closer and the reviews were favourable.

We called in for lunch in bank holiday Monday having enjoyed a meal there on a previous visit to Southport about 10 years previously.

We chose to use the takeaway facility where purchased meals an be eaten on outside tables on the street outside in the sunshine.

Good location close to shops on Lord Street and five minute walk to promenade. Good value fish, chips and trimmings with pleasant seated area. Staff attentive and friendly. Nice place for lunch on a wet and windy day. Would use again.

Visited Southport for the day. The town was quiet probably due to the breeze, We all picked fish and chips £7.95 for fish, chips and mushy peas. It was tasty but the batter was quite greasy, The staff were all very helpful. The restaurant has many seats and can fit up to 120 people. There are 2 toilets. One in the basement has very steep stairs. One on ground level is great if you have difficulty walking.

We had lunch there on 23.10.17. The good points were central location, and fast service. The downsides were a basic decor and furniture, and a fish & chips experience which probably hasn't changed in decades. Some people like the predictability of a typical fish & chips meal, I have had so many, I years for something different and more exciting.

Never been here before so thought we would give it a try as soon as we walked in the atmosphere was so friendly and warm .We were seated straight away and given a menu and a few minutes to decide and what a brilliant choice we made fish and chips and a hot coffee staff really funny and place very clean would definatly come here again and I fully recommend it to anyone .

This is a popular fish restaurant. No pretensions, just good fresh food, cooked to order. We both had cod and chips and I also had pickled onions and pickled eggs (OK I know its not everyone's taste but to be offered both was wonderful).

Called in for a quick meal. Was greeted as I arrived for a quick meal. Waitress welcomed me and got me seated at a quiet table by the window. Wish I had got the name of the waitress as she was so welcoming and helpful. I had the traditional fish and chips with mushy peas. This was the best fish and chips ever. Will be back. Thank you.

We had takeaway fish and chips so can't comment on the restaurant but the takeaway cod chips and mushy peas were amazing. They were cooked to perfection especially the fish which was thick white and meaty with a lovely light crispy battery. If you are in or around Southport any time give the Dolphin a try you won't be disappointed. Highly recommended. Very centrally located so on a nice day you can sit around the Lake to eat them. Great place for a great lunch !

We stumbled on this place while looking for lunch.

Started off well and the food LOOKED delicious. BUT the fish turned out to be undercooked and 'puddingy', the peas were not all that mushy, and the crust on the steak pie could have built a motorway flyover.

I visited the Dolphin Fish Restaurant with my Partner Sandra on a recent visit to Southport to buy tickets at the Theatre. We had our dog Ruby with us but she was welcomed into a dog friendly area and everyone made a fuss of her including the owners before she went to sleep under the table. We are very dubious of ordering Fish at new places but decided to give the Cod Chips and Mushy Peas a go. Our order was taken very quickly by one of the many staff. When the meal came it was to say the least one of the best Cod and Chip meals I have ever had. The chips were hot and well cooked. The mushy peas tasted like I remember from my youth and that is some time ago. The cod was just perfect. Lovely crisp batter, not to thick and a nice golden brown. The fish itself was a brilliant white and really flakey. All in all it was the perfect chippy meal accompanied by Bread and Butter and two little pots of tea each.

Eating in is Waitress service, clean environment, fresh fish & Chips, plus homemade Apple Pie & Cream sweets with Seniors offers.

Visited for late lunch with family, cud, chips n mushy peas and haddock, chips n mushy peas. Wow so fresh and lovely. Proper steeped mushy peas. Very clean and friendly. Even allowed a couple with little dogs in, were accommodating to an elderly gentleman with wheelchair while he checked he could actually come in with it at a later day.

My partner and I went for lunch at Dolphin take away on the 22nd July 2017, during a visit to Southport. It has to be one of the best fish and chips ever, they were very tasty indeed. The staff was very friendly and gave a prompt service, I would defiantly recommend this restaurant / takeaway. I will be going back, and would go specially for the fish and chips.

We visited The Dolphin last year when we were in Southport & had a great lunch so we decided to go back! It was absolutely delicious - cooked fresh & plenty of it.The offer was £7.25 for battered fish of choice, chips plus mushy peas & included free apple pie with ice cream. what a treat! The staff were busy but attentive & accommodated my gluten free friend with a freshly microwaved haddock which was excellent & spoilt her with strawberry sauce on her ice cream - it's the little things in life that matter so much.
