Dolphin Fish and Chips Restaurant in Eastbourne

This was by far the best fish and chips in town. i’m pretty sure that the previous owner (chris) has retired. its been taken over by his rude and aggressive brother in law. i made a point that the food wasnt up to standard. he walked away and kept clapping. very strange man. As a family we normally had a takeaway from them most weekends. and doing so for 25 years. They have lost a good customer. i wont be going back

We were visiting Eastbourne and decided we wanted some decent sit-in fish and chips and the Dolphin did not disappoint. It was cooked fresh to order, with nice light batter and not greasy. There was friendly staff and the bathrooms were also very clean, which is another good indicator.

The best fish and chips that I have had for ages. Fresh fish superbly prepared combined with perfect chips. Simply the best.

I've been going there for 25 years and it's always been the best!!... but, not now I hate to say it. They have tiny portion sizes and the prices have increased. The service is rude and abrupt, on the phone they couldn't understand what I was saying. When I turned up to collect the food (which I regret buying now!) a couple of the staff were sniggering like children. It's a shame they don't simply employ someone who has a good level of English and can behave like an adult! The chips are nowhere near as good as they used to be for 20 years or so, I think the oil is different which they changed more recently? the flavour is definitely not the same. They're no longer the best one around for me, so I'll be going elsewhere in future due to their behaviour I mentioned and the quality, portion sizes, and price.

Chip Portion was very small for cost, 3 portions of chips for £16, when challenged he became increasingly rude and refused to refund, I have just read the other reviews and this clearly isn’t a one off, he tried to tell us he had been there 15 years, he is obviously trying to live off previous owners reputation.

The fish was tasty but the batter was slightly oily. The chips were okay. Have tasted better but most coastal chippys serve a lot worse chips. Service was friendly and efficient.

Actually ordered a take-away for my partner, who is ill. Very pleased by the service, which was very quick, door-to-door and brought by a smiling and friendly man who works in the restaurant. The food was piping hot, my partner told me and she really enjoyed it.

Had a takeaway, 2 chips, one haddock, one cod. Partner had to pat the cod with kitchen roll to get the excess grease off before he could eat it. Fish size was disappointingly small Cannot recommend

Every time we stay in Eastbourne, we pop in for a fish supper. Service was quick and the food was freshly cooked. The plaice was delicious, the batter was crisp and the chips hot with a crunchy outside & fluffy middle. Portion size was just right for us and we throughly enjoyed our meal. We will be back!

As regular customers you really let us down and we will not be returning as a result. Your standards have clearly dropped. Chips were over cooked and made with bruised potatoes? No batter on fish and really greasy!

Over priced, small chips and sausage £6 better chip shops in the area, last time I had fish and chips cost £14 and was very small for the money you pay avoid!!

This is a basic chippy.and there is nothing wrong in that. Cod and chips good. Grilled fish less liked. I think it is above average but not very good. So between a 3 and 4 rating. Having said that, if I lived in Eastbourne I would go back.

We searched online for a good Fish & Chip shop in Eastbourne and the Dolphin Fish bar came up as the best. We visited last night and can confirm that all the 5 star reviews are justified, we were greeted warmly, the lady serving us was friendly and the food was really good. We had the Haddock and chips, the batter was just as it should be and the chips were good as well. We’ll visit again on our next trip and would thoroughly recommend you do to.

I've been a repeat customer as the food is so nice but I probably won't be coming back due to the customer service. Woman who serves with dark frizzy hair (the owner?) has a bit of an off attitude and we've had several awkward encounters. Very rarely have issues with staff when shopping/ordering food. Eg I asked for bbq sauce on my ribs and she explains to me what the ribs are like (which I know already) and says "I told you this last week" when there is a pot of bbq sauce behind the till! Bit rude and then when I actually compliment how good the food is to try and make things easier she says "I dont know how you feel about things" - like how weird? It's like she doesn't want me a recurring customer to actually be in there, unwelcoming, so I won't be

Visited on a Friday at 2.30 and it was surprisingly busy to sit inside, an indication of how good the food must be. We were warmly greeted and our order taken promptly. We both had cod and chips. The fish was skinless in a crisp batter and excellent chips, not a huge portion, just the right amount for lunch, so we cleaned our plates. Will definitely visit again next time we are in Eastbourne.

Not impressed with the unfriendly attitude of staff. Visited on a Saturday, in the early evening. Was turned away to eat in, despite all the tables being empty and was told they were all booked. Didn't appear so. Their only custom was a queue of people who were waiting for takeaways, not to eat in. Along, a completely over the top policy of only allowing one customer in a shop at a time, due to COVID. Ridiculous. I won't be going back.

we went in for dinner and had fish and chips and burger and chips as we went to the seating area the waiter asked us to sanitise our hands which was good to see.as we sat down and given menus the waiter who was a young guy then got our drinks and took our order. the food arrived in about 10 minutes and was hot and fair portions for the price.the only let down was the burger patty which didn't taste very nice.

I came here on the weekend with my friend, after a long day on the beach. It’s slightly off the beaten track, but well worth the 10 minute walk from the beach. The food was served fresh and quickly, we both went for the traditional fish and chips with mushy peas. It all tasted fantastic. Our waiter Neil was really attentive and brought us extra tartar sauce when desired. Overall a great visit, and would go back to Eastbourne just for this!

Went there on Friday for the first time and the food was brilliant, nicest piece of fish we’ve had in a long time. Good size portions at a great price. Spotlessly clean, has tables so you can eat in also has air conditioning along with toilet facilities. Will definitely go there again.

After reading these reviews, our expectations were high and we were all quite hungry after a day out walking. We ordered a regular cod and chips, regular haddock and chips and battered sausage and chips. The cod was small and was very greasy to the extent that my daughter ate a third and then gave some to the dog and fed the rest to the seagulls. The haddock was only slightly bigger but very greasy too. The chips were quite dry. The battered sausage was absolutely fine. Overall not the best fish and chips we have had and a little disappointing, would expect better quality of fish especially as we were by the coast. We should have taken them back but we had already travelled back to the beach to tuck in.

Usually, we get takeaway from Dolphin and it's fine, but with an hour to spare, we decided to sit in for once. My large haddock tasted so fresh and was beautifully battered. The huss went down well too and the chips very decent freshly made. All washed down with great tea. A real simple treat.
