Dojo Restaurant in Newcastle upon Tyne

The atmosphere is good and the staff is attentive. We have been here last year, all food was ok, but we was disappointed with the shashimi today. The shashimi is not fresh especially tuna. Hope that next time, the shashimi will be good along with the set. The food is slightly salty for me. I guess it’s ok for people who like slightly salty food.

Second time eating in Dojo. The sushi here do not disappoint. They always taste great and fresh. The chef special Maki is worth every penny. The service and menu are huge letdown, however. The waitstaff barely spoke any English and was not able to recommend any dish for us to try. The menu is battered and does not offer any explanation in what any of the sushi sets contain. When asked, the waitstaff simply said they had no idea.

Dojo is our top choice for food in Newcastle, the food is always incredible and fairly priced. Great atmosphere and staff are all lovely. Their current stone rice bowl special is to die for, takes me back to my trip to Japan :)

Nice decorations of japanese style. Food is good, service is good, very clean and cozy. Not too loud.

Absolutely delicious food & fabulous friendly service - it was our son’s birthday & a free dessert was brought out despite being late on a Sat night when they were getting ready to shut up for the night. Highly recommended!

Love this place, we ordered sushi & sashimi, fresh, good quality ingredients. Such friendly staff & excellent service. It was a little bit more than I would usually spend on lunch but definitely worth it for a treat I would say.

Brilliant restaurant with amazing food and brilliant staff! Food and drink was delicious, we got the crabstick ramen and the hot rocks king prawn rice dish! Not only where they very tastey but the portion sizes were well worth the reasonable prices. Our servers were all very friendly and charming. The restaurant was busy so got quite loud but the food, service and lovely decor really make it worth a visit :]

The place to go to for good quality Japanese food in Newcastle!

One of the staff members was rude to me this evening, and he made me feel very uncomfortable. While the rest of the staff were polite, the overall experience was disappointing. The food is very overpriced for the quality. No, it's not very authentic at all. Yes, the food is obviously made with cheap ingredients. No, it didn't taste very good. I wouldn’t recommend it.

Good Japanese food in Newcastle

This gem has become our favourite sushi restaurant in the city. The fish is always fresh and the ramen dishes are so delicious. The staff is friendly and attentive. Really good dining experience that keeps us coming back all the time!

Absolutely lovely restaurant. Staff were very friendly, accommodating, and welcoming. The decor and atmosphere feels very Authentic, and the food was delicious. They have a large and varied menu with lots of choice and variation. We'll be back very soon.

The restaurant has a nice atmosphere and a good selection of dishes on its menu. We ordered the pumpkin croquette and chicken karaage for our starters, and they were both delicious. However, I ordered the deep-fried tofu and salmon bento set for my main, which was a mistake, and I would not recommend it. The deep-fried salmon is very bland and should normally come with a tonkatsu sauce or something, but there was nothing. I asked a waiter about this, but they were quite dismissive in their attitude and told me that it didn't need a sauce as it contained cheese inside. The salmon definitely did not contain cheese inside, so I was unimpressed by his condescending and dismissive attitude, especially as I was left to eat a deep fried but otherwise unseasoned, bland salmon. Having said that, their other dishes did look more delicious, so I would come back to try something different next time.

It's a neat place with great staff, but it's so overpriced... For £16 for the unagi-donburi I feel I should have had more than 6 small pieces of eel, two slices of a vegetable, and an equivalent of a large bowl of rice. Eels are native to Britain. It's not like it would have to be imported. Food was great, and I imagine for things one can't get elsewhere (like sashimi) it might be mostly worth it, but £7+ for two pieces of sashimi just seems like price gouging.

excellent sushi and sashimi, we had salmon belly nigiri, scallops nigiri, octopus sashimi, my favourite is the bowl of salmon and scallops on rice with miso soup, great value. The staffs are always friendly and prompt service.

I am already going to glaze this place, as it’s the truth. Have been to places in Japan serving ramen, chicken, beef and donburis, as well as Asian restaurants in Newcastle that serves Japanese food, so I’m aware about what’s consistent and what’s good. First timer was the best place I’ve ever had almost genuine, similar tasting Japanese food ever. From the ramen to the chicken to even the donburis, it tastes almost as if I was back in Tokyo. Service is great and homely, often having your undivided attention to specific questions and aid. As I’ve been here many times, the consistency has kept and the taste hasn’t changed. This is my 7th visit and has never disappointed me.

The food here is delicious. We had a fantastic time, the menu is huge! There's so much to choose from, I'll have to return. Really enjoyed the green tea soup - I'd never heard of this, I'll definitely give it a go thus Autumn, it was so comforting to eat. The staff were nice. It is expensive, but the quality is good and often Japanese food is slightly more pricey.

I love this restaurant. Really cool Japanese theming inside with music videos playing on the TVs too. The menu is huge and everything is so tasty! Would recommend the bento boxes if you want variety. My favorite is the salmon teriyaki

This is my favourite restaurant. The food is so delicious and authentic - the closest I’ve found to what I get served in Japan. The staff are all so kind and friendly. I recently brought a friend who suffers with sever gluten allergy, and when we asked about gluten free options, they were all very accommodating and even tailored some dishes to fit her needs. Thank you for the delicious food!

Best Japanese place I've been to! Such a great atmosphere and friendly staff who make you feel right at home. The food is delicious, I would highly recommend the ramen, the garlic aubergine, and mochi. I've been a few times and I am never disappointed, will be back many times more!

Nice place... huge menu, with nice quality food that from what I know seems very authentic. Quirky atmosphere with friendly staff and spot on service. Our table had some sashimi, a bento box and some noodles and a few other bits. All food was very fresh and tasty and the miso was great. Not the cheapest, but not extortionate and would happily return to try and sample more of the menu.

It was a really great Japanese restaurant, the atmosphere was great and the people were really friendly. Due to the popularity it sometime a little bit hard to reach for them but they do our best to provide a quality services.. the food is good and there is a lot of choices and also offer takeaway.

Photos and reviews looked amazing but we didn’t have a great experience unfortunately. We didn’t enjoy the sushi . The ramen was fine.

Was here for my friends birthday last weekend and the service was great! The food was delicious and we were given an extra hour in the karaoke room. Highly recommend, we all had a fantastic night!

Had my birthday in the hello kitty karaoke room upstairs with friends and we had THE BEST time. Amazing food and drinks and very friendly staff. They even got me balloons, wine as a gift and a free beer! Thank you for having us!

Amazing experience! Came for a birthday we had a lovely time! I appreciate the vegetarian selection my food was amazing and my partner had the bento box and he said his was amazing too! We also had the Karaoke room (hello kitty themed!!!) which was so fun and drinks were brought to us by the lovely staff. They even offered us an extra hour on the house even though they were closing! Staff were all so so lovely and the service was so good and I can’t wait to come back 💕 Thank you all! x

Finally found my favourite place to eat out. The service is quick and easy, the food that came out was delicious, so good I barely managed to get any pictures. I can’t wait to return to try more of the menu. I would highly recommend the seared salmon nigiri as it melts in your mouth.

The karaoke room was so cute, it was hello-kitty themed. The food came in really large quantities and was beautifully presented. The taste of the food was good.

We had the sushi and unagi set. Unagi was tasty but the sushis that came with it were abit dry and not the freshest. Overall still a lovely place with many choices on the menu. The Gate and Q-Park are just opposite the restaurant.

Prompt and attentive staff, lovely sashimi platter. Not the most atmospheric of restaurants if one wanted that in addition to great food. Happily return here

We first visited this restaurant in December 2022 and had a decent experience. We returned in December 2023 to be met with rudeness and a serious attitude problem from head waitress. None of the staff seemed to know the menu meaning there was confusion when ordering which was followed by condescending treatment when we didn’t receive the food we ordered. For the price and this level of service, I don’t think i’d return again unless that waitress fixes her serious attitude problem.

Loved loved loved the food,ambience and the service. Would hands down go back to try other items on the menu. If you like Japanese animation then you can enjoy your food alone while enjoying the animation

It was Saturday and we decided to wander around.Craving for a japanese foods. This restaurant appearead after we searched. We did not regret. The atmosphere was welcoming , staff were friendly and foods were delicious.

The food was quite good, as described in the other reviews, so that's a plus. Prices are ok as well, especially for English standards. We had bento boxes, which were definitely filling, and ramen, which for Chinese standards, which are high, I would rate a seven out of ten. The noodles were most likely not hand made and the soup was not completely made with natural stock. As for the atmosphere, it feels cozy, but there's a bit too much of video and commercials and moving things. I couldn't focus very well there. Upstairs, though, where the toilets are, the hygiene needs to be improved somewhat.

Typical Asian-Japanese (that means to Japanese people not very Japanese but to other East Asians mouth watering enough) restaurant conveniently located at China Town just next to Grainger Market. Too many choices on the menu I wish I had more stomachs. The only downside is the big screen keep playing music videos, but KPop or CPop MVs never go well with Japanese food.

The sashimi platter was served in a boat. Yes, a boat. Sukiyaki was exquisite. Yakisoba, hiyamugi, harusame, udon, and ramen. Highly recommended. This is probably the best Japanese restaurant in Newcastle. However, due to its excellence, seats are difficult to find. Reservation in advance is strongly recommended.

Wow!! This has become our go to restaurant and we cant recommend it enough, by far the best in the North East.

Have been going to Dojo once month for roughly a year now, over this time I have introduced my family and friends to this hidden gem in Newcastle and never failed to have a delicious meal at this restaurant. Everyone that has I have introduced to Dojo loved the food. I would especially recommend trying the bento (definitely the kastu curry bento) as it has everything that you could want and is great value for money. Whenever I visit Newcastle, it's hard to choose a restaurant other than this one. On one occasion our table was not served the miso soup with the bento, however, the restaurant was very busy, we were unsure whether this was due to them not having any left or if it has been forgotten, but I am sure that this would have been cleared up if we brought it to the attention of the kind and helpful staff. Either way, if you haven't already, please try out this restaurant and support your local businesses.

I had the most amazing king prawns in tempura. Easily rivals Japanese restaurants in London. Pricing is very competitive, felt like very good value for money. Unfussy atmosphere with very helpful staff. I would highly recommend.

You can immediately realise the sashimi are not fresh from the first bite. I had a teishoku, and the overall food presentation and taste were mediocre. A bit disappointed.

My new favourite place to eat. Absolutely exceptional. The food was amazing- I have multiple allergies and staff were able to recommend dishes that were safe for me. We were a large group yet all of our dishes arrived in a timely manner and both looked, and tasted unbelievably good! The prices were just the cherry on top! Wonderful time was had by all and I can't wait to return.

Have been eating at Dojo for 7 years now. Definitely the best Japanese restaurant in town! For a relatively fair price, you can get a authentic & outstanding Japanese experience with its decors, & the food is just pure gold👌🏻. They have also got a great variety of food options there ranging from sashimi, to bento & hotpot, or tempura etc. etc. If you are looking for a great place with good food, I would absolutely recommend it!

Service and food is always top notch. We come here almost weekly because we enjoy it so much! The quirky decor and friendliness of the staff makes for a fun atmosphere.

Love the menu choices, but food bang average. Soft shell crab tempura and takoyaki nice. Sashimi nice but rolls and nigiri was average.

I recently had the displeasure of dining at dojo restaurant in Newcastle Upon Tyne, and I must say, the frizzy haired boss-lady (possible manager?) manners were absolutely appalling. Their rudeness and lack of hospitality ruined the entire dining experience. She displayed a complete disregard for our needs and treated us with disdain. Her condescending tone and dismissive gestures made it abundantly clear that they had no interest in providing even a basic level of customer service. It's truly disheartening to witness such unprofessional behavior from someone in a position of authority. What's funny is that it was clear when she served the other table with locals(british people), she was all smiles and even took extra care when chatting/serving their table. For context, we were a group of SEA university students just having dinner. I strongly advise anyone seeking a pleasant dining experience to steer clear of this establishment until they address the abysmal managerial standards.

Lady manager that took our order was extremely cold and rude !! It seems like this restaurant only caters to the locals and not the Asians even though the boss herself might be Asian ¿?

This is a small restaurant, but packs a fantastic experience. The staff are so helpful with the food is amazing, they will help you with the menu how its cooked, ask what food you like and make fantastic suggestions. I travel 45 miles each way to eat here well worth it. I would recommend you book a table you will be disappointed if you turn up no tables. they get very busy especially on weekends.

Came here with friends, lots of stuff marked as vegetarian but nothing marked as vegan. When I asked there were options for me, but not very exciting sadly. The team were very friendly and accommodating though and I had a great time still :)

When I explained that this was my first time in visiting and eating in a Japanese restaurant, the waitress was extremely helpful and patient in steering me to what she thought I would enjoy. I chose a platter that consisted of breaded chicken in a curry sauce, tempura prawns, miso soup, baked egg and salad. Absolutely delicious. Many thanks.
