The food was fantastic especially the bhajis. I had the vindaloo after speaking to the waitress. It wasn’t crazy spicy as she said and flavour was amazing. It was also unusual to get a beef curry. Desserts were great and there was an excellent drinks selection. Definitely something special and a bit different from your usual Indian restaurants. I would definitely recommend.

The lamb chops are absolutely top notch, pricey but you get plenty of meat and it’s delicious! Get the large which is 4 pieces. The black lentil/daal is also spectacular when coupled with butter naans. 😍 Rogan lamb was so so. Mango lassi had mint in it??? *cue question marks guy gif*

Problem on arrival, given table for 4, booking was for 5, table too small to accommodate all dishes, eventually added a table. Service was poor. Waiters, very pleasant, but were not familiar with some of the dishes when asked questions. Also, when asked if we could have a dish without the side, one said, no, one said yes, so we paid for an alternative side dish. Food was ok but much more spicy, even the Korma. Disappointed as this was our first visit.

I had heard good things about this place and they were mostly true. We had a fantastic meal here (chefs table for 2). We were seated on a round table in the middle of the place. The round table was not big enough for our order, so if you plan on getting chefs table you should ask for a square table on the side or you will struggle. Everything tasted really good, meat was very nice and the pace of dishes coming out was perfect. With the main dishes, I would say there that we got insufficient carb dishes when considering the amount of curry dishes served. We ended up ordering more naan, which they refunded at the end and was much appreciated. I found the venue to be quite noisy as it was a popular place, and it was a struggle to hear what the servers asked/said but they were polite and friendly. This has got to be some of the tastiest food and the better experiences I have had in the past few years. You can tell that a lot of effort has gone into the dishes Definitely worth a trip. Shout out to the opposite attract cocltail, which I obviously misread. Thought it was a big cocktail but came out as double smoking short cocktail shots encased in a glass case of smoke. Amazing mix of flavours.

The best lamb chops you will have, nothing will compare after. I didn’t think it was possible to have that much meat on a lamb chop! Amazing flavours and cooked to perfection. We also ordered the chicken 65 which was far better than the description on the menu. I was expecting standard fried chicken. Best drink on the menu was fire on queen street. If you like a spicy margarita I would recommend this. We called at 4pm on a Friday for a table and they were able to squeeze us in at 5:30 with no prior reservation. They had lots of waiting staff about. Only feedback is that we had to flag someone down to request drinks/ to order food/ ask for the bill instead of being approached. When we spoke to staff they were lovely and gave advice on the menu. Think dishoom, but with a more modern decor and smaller, more refined menu. Highly recommend here

Didn't get off to a good first impression, waiting over 15 minutes for our table which we booked. We tried ordering drinks at the bar which took over 10 minutes itself. Once we finally got seated and served the food and drink was very good. All the food tasted freshly prepared and was hot. Food was tasty too. Service was fine. It was hard to hear the servers over the music playing. This was slightly loud for my taste considering we were in a restaurant. We were left without cutlery for some time but this was very quickly recitifed once we pointed it out Food was pricey but good quality and probably worth about what we paid.

Walked in on a Saturday lunchtime and had a great welcome. Lunchtime special was 2 courses for £18. My wife and I had different starters one chicken, one chickpea and they were both amazing! We both had the famous Butter Chicken for mains and it deserves the reputation. Not a huge portion but very very good for the price. Deserts were nice and not too expensive. However - £9 for a can of local IPA was a bit steep I thought! Other than that Khai Khai is definitely on the recommendation list and we're going to try an evening next time.

We loved our visit here, chosen after reading Grace Dent’s review. We had the broccoli and it didn’t disappoint. The starters were all excellent. The mains were fine but to be honest nothing to write home about. I had the butter chicken and I found it really boring - sweet, creamy, tomatoey and reminiscent of chicken in a tin of Heinz tomato soup with some cream. Maybe it was just an off day. But the cocktails were delicious, the service exemplary and the atmosphere buzzing and attractive. And we had great fun! I’d definitely go again and give it another try.

Very tasty meal with myself and a friend. Was £84 with 10% service charge but the food and the service was very good. Poppadoms, starter each, main and rice each and 1 garlic naan, a beer and two soft drinks so I guess the going rate for a nice restaurant these days. There was a weekday early bird meal option but we chose from the main menu. Lots of gf options and the spice levels were spot on.

Waiter gave us a menu and came back very quickly we didn't have a chance to look. I asked to order some starters and poppadoms and then decide on mains. I was told not possible as so busy and tables are all booked so needed to order quick. Felt very rushed and got.flustered so didn't actually know what to order. Food came quick and was nice but not as nice as previous visits and not worth the money. When we aksed for the bill there were loads if tables free and people taking time to order. Even though I like the restaurant service and atmosphere, the food is so sub standard for the price they're charging for it, I ordered a saag paneer and I've had made a saag paneer in my lifetime, but they served me shredded paneer and this green thick sludge with 0 flavour and half crispy unseasonal kale on the side. Also the chips were stale and my partner only got 3 pieces of chicken breast in his butter chicken dish. 0 dairy free options for chai at the end of the night, and definitely weren't in the mood for dessert unfortunately. Maybe a shout for drinks since I couldn't fault the service and atmosphere, but they need to polish up their food menu for regular visitors and not just for people with influence

Nice enough food, similar to Dishoom. Few stand out starters (broccoli and murgh chicken) that were excellent. No problem with the small plate concept, particularly meat, but fairly miserly portions when came to black lentils and paneer (5 tiny cubes in a big masala sauce). Wouldn’t take or cost much to fill out these dishes. Service was friendly but chaotic. Plates delivered then removed, crockery dropped. Nice but at £40+ a head inc service charge, should be a bit better.

My partner and I dined at Kai Kai last night following recommendations from friends. The ambience and service was good but we were very disappointed with the quality of the food. We both had mains - mine Murgh Tikka was simply a plate of chicken pieces, no salad as is customary with Tandoori dishes and no lovely crisply fried onions. My partner chose 2 small plates - a chicken kebab and a lamb one. Each plate had two poor thin sausage shaped kebabs with no salad (as advertised in the menu) and I'm fairly sure mostly composed of cereal rather than meat. At around £8.95 per plate this seemed appalling value for money. We ordered a grilled greens side dish but at nearly £7 the portion size was disappointingly meagre.

We’ve visited this place a few times for lunch. Sadly, dinner’s not an option since we’re parents to a toddler and they don’t allow kids under 5 in the evenings. The food is a bit of a hit and miss. The starters have been mostly good, with the broccoli tandoori being consistently good. I found the main course quite average with nothing standing out really. The passion fruit mocktail was outstanding but the lemonade was a bit too sour for my taste. It’s the same with service as well with some of them going out of their way to give you a great experience while some of the servers were quite indifferent and had a bit of an attitude. A bottle of tap water was charged at £5. There’s a lot of good but quite some can be improved on as well.

I've been to Newcastle three times and I have eaten here twice. If you love old Mumbai smokehouses you will adore this place. The aesthetic is beautiful, dark, rich, calming. The lamb biryani is another level. The chicken is very good, but the signature black dahl is really special, you don't get that in a lot of places in the UK. Oh and the onion bhajis are excellent. It is a very authetic Indian restaurant. The details are really finessed, such as water in metal carafes. I really felt like I was back in India.

We had Kingfisher (bottles not draught), bottled water, shared poppadoms / chutney, then onion & samphire bhajis, beetroot shikampuri, followed by adraki bhuna lamb & rice, & grilled seabass & greens & 2 coffees. Will go back but will have to be a special occasion. 👍

A wonderful find in Newcastle. The lunch menu gave good options. Delicious food and value for money. Good place for vegan options. They are very accommodating and adapted choices for vegans.

Such brilliant food here. Have been twice now for restaurant week and the flavours are just gorgeous. Really good with different dietary needs too.

Beautiful places. But cashless doesn't work for everyone. The cheak to put a tap and tip on the bar was disgusting .
