Mark Toney & Co Ltd in Newcastle upon Tyne

I visited on the 4th of May and lovely Sarah served me with a happy face and information on how to get back to my hotel I had a wonderful bacon sandwich with a good cuppa I only wish I had room for all the wonderful looking cakes and ice cream well worth a visit

Have been going to Mark Toneys for many years always enjoyable

Rude staff. I don't know what their problem was - This old lady took our cups as soon as we finished our drinks, kept staring at us as they pass by, and told us to order more drinks or leave because we were using laptops. It doesn't make sense as we weren't staying there for a long time, we weren't using their energy, the place was empty, and other people who arrived before us didn't order additional drinks(one couple was even using their laptop!) yet they somehow decided to tell us off. It's a shame as this place holds 1950s American vintage style atmosphere, but everything apart from that is awful. The quality of the staff, food, drinks and ice cream is cheap and bad. Also, customers are not allowed to stay downstairs apparently. There's no sign, it's not been closed off, the heaters are on, but still they expect us to magically know that it's a prohibited area. As other customers complained here, it's confusing.

I searched for this nostalgic restaurant on Google and decided to try it with my husband during our trip to Newcastle. We visited in the morning and found that there weren't many guests in the restaurant. The space and seating were ample. We each ordered an English breakfast. The toasted bread and butter were delicious, and the bread wasn't too dry. Every item in the English breakfast was of high quality, generously portioned, and satisfying. I ordered Earl Grey tea, which had a fragrant taste that I really enjoyed. There were some cakes, ice cream, and desserts displayed near the counter, but I was too full after breakfast and didn't have a chance to try them. The overall decor of the restaurant had a nostalgic feel, maintaining its old-fashioned charm. Classic music played in the background, creating a lovely atmosphere. The only downside was that the attitude of all the waitstaff was very serious and unfriendly, without any smiles. It made me feel a bit intimidated when I first arrived.

Great place if you want to eat equally great food.

Trip down memory lane today to impress my friend with a " real ice cream parlour" that has remain steadfast for at least around 59 years Still beautiful ambience excellent food and presentation and service friendly knowledgeable and first class. Food always lovely and a decent price too. Staff are friendly and good atmosphere (1950s -60s music playing) Would recommend this place. Ice creams look nice and a good range of vegetarian options.

Nice authentic event, friendly ladies, lots of brass, music from the 60s... you feel like you're back in time.

I love Mark Toney's and have been going since I was a kid. I have been following the same tradition with my kids and they love the Sunday's as well.

The food comes very quickly and the ice cream flavours are emacutate and the food portions are massive for the price I would reccomed they have a bunch of vegan and vegetarian options so it's for everyone

Decided to give Mark Toney another chance after having a bad experience but I don't think I will again. The tables and menu were dirty and a lot of the ingredients for the menu weren't in stock so most of the sundaes couldn't be made. I used to enjoy this ice cream parlor but now the ice cream tastes vile, I couldn't actually finish my sundae because of how bad it tasted. Mark Toney ice cream had a delicious flavour, and after not going for a few years I can see now it's nothing like it used to be. Unfortunately after many years of going here I don't think I can come back anymore unless they bring back the old ice cream. I thought maybe I just had a bad batch but I tried it again and yes without a doubt the recipe has changed, I don't know when they changed it but for those of us who came a few years ago it's a very significant change it's horribly cheap and nasty now. This goes for the all the sundaes, sauce and toppings were also horrendous. Such a shame because this was an iconic place in Newcastle and holds good memories and now you can get better ice cream else where. Yes, even from the shop I'm afraid to say. It's very sad and I hope that they can listen to feedback and improve.

We had the apple blackcurrant pie, breakfast tea and hot chocolate. I think the hot chocolate was the best I ever had. Friendly staff.

Full english is beautiful, criendly staff

Ordered omelette and chip. The omelette was like two fried eggs lightly beaten. So over cooked it was like rubber. The chips were soggy. There seemed to be an atmosphere between the staff, no communication and seemed like the front staff were ignoring the girl who was cleaning the tables. No please or thank you to customers. The decor was tired and the toilets need a refitting. As you can tell I will not be returning

Great service fantastic range of Ice cream shakes etc will be returning to samol the hot meal menu quality products. Good value

A little nirvana in the city centre. They do coffee but really it's where you go for a nice cup of tea and sit down. A traditional cafe rather than Costa or Starbucks (if anyone has had worse tea than Costa I'd love to know how). All the food is great apart from the burger. The ice cream is fantastic, the bacon sandwich is better than Gregg's (I like Gregg's breakfast a lot). The staff are all brilliant and have been working there for years, which in this day and age is an oddity. Having been a customer since I was a small child on trips to town with my grandma I can't praise it enough, it is a traditional cafe offering traditional cafe foods. Update:really cheap and still fantastic tea and a bacon and egg sandwich just over 3 pound

Just had excellent breakfast and pleasant service

Never again don't eat meat, so opted for scampi and chips, had no scampi so went for fish n chips no fish, fair enough not a big deal so I opted for double egg and chips. Cam to the table with sausage egg and chips, not only did it have meat on it it was one egg that was well overcooked inside some kind of ring to make it look better which it failed to do. No yoak to dip the chips. I even left the chips as they were covered in oil so was the plate. I'm used to greasy spoons but this was my worst experience to date as a non meat eater...

Always cook my bacon the way I like it. Love the ice cream. Staff are friendly and polite.

Unfriendly, unhelpful service . Food was not good, tea was also not good. Toilets had no soap or hot water. Very disappointing experience in a potentially delightful cafe with a retro feel. Needs new management.

What's not to love about having a cuppa and food here. Best puddings, cakes and ice-cream sundaes. A good selection on the savory menu as well . The staff are fab, even when they're really busy.

Delicious ice cream on a waffle cone for a great price! The cherry and chocolate stracciatella was delectable. I highly recommend for an afternoon snack after exploring the city.

Loved the look of this place so dropped in for some lunch. Sure the inside has seen better days but it’s full of charm and the service is with a smile. Unfortunately for us the food left a lot to be desired, however the desserts and particularly the ice cream sundaes were delicious. We’d got back for the ice cream

I'm visiting the area for a week and have been multiple times. The price you pay for the portion is a steal, and the quality is fantastic too. I strongly recommend anyone take a swing in, it's worth your while.

An excellent Olde cafe/ice cream parlour in Newcastle upon Tyne. Cracking breakfast

Went here for breakfast today and had a full English. Cannot complain about it one bit. Everything was cooked to perfection. Had a pot of tea with the full English and it was a very good tea. Also very reasonably priced considering the location!

Mark Toney is a lovely little spot for breakfast that heralds a simpler time of shiny diners and a generous menu of perennial favourites. I had a simple but delicious egg roll that boasted eggs that were fried to perfection, runny yolks and an oh-so-soft bun to mop up all of that gooey goodness. Come with an empty stomach and leave with a full heart.

Just had coffee lady very friendly at counter and music was great took me back to my teens.

Got the pistachio and raspberry stracciatella ice cream. Both were amazing. Best pistachio ice cream I've had in awhile. Highly recommend!

VERY rude staff. Got annoyed when we sat downstairs, only to be told they didnt want to open downstairs for some reason, but upstairs had no space and were very rude. Dreadful experience. The staff should be fired for talking to our group like that. They clearly didn't want our business. If downstairs is not open, it should be closed off totally, they're turning away business due to their poor attitude and lack of opening their seating area. The staff treat you with contempt, as if you're an inconvenience. Looking at other reviews, we're not alone in our experince. Toilets were horrific. Go elsewhere and avoid this horribly run place.

You can order various items of food, from hot meals, coffee and various cakes, delicious icecreams (allthough the icecteam is not home made by the taste of it) Staff works very hard and is Friesland and correct. The whole atmosphere is typical nostalgic English like in the seventies

The Christmas sandwich is back. My favourite sandwich. If you’ve not had one then your missing out. Service is always amazing. Vegetable lentil soup is another winter favourite too.

Great old well known cafe, lovely homemade snacks, meals, breakfasts and large selection of ice creams.

AVOID! Staff are very rude. They won't allow you to sit downstairs even when the main level is packed and loud, we were told off (like naughty children!!) for going downstairs when no signs said it was closed. No vegan options. Staff treated us with contempt, as if we were a nuisance for even coming in. Dated menu and design. Old Fashioned. The Ice Cream was over priced however was well designed. Horrible experience.

Very disappointed in the service here. The staff were unhelpful, sharp, and borderline rude, as if they didn't want our business. Downstairs always closed. No gluten free/vegan options. This place used to be FAR better run than it is now. It's gone down hill, a lot. Unprofessional. My family and I were shocked at their poor attitude. Don't bother going to Mark Toney's, it'll leave a bad taste in your mouth from the way they speak to you. Not cheap either!!

Found this place really interesting. From the outside it really attracted me and gave me a sense of a retro icecream parlour/diner. When I went in, there was some really nice decor however, alot of it looked really tired and work needed doing which was such a shame. The staff were really lovely, especially the lady who served me. The lady who seemed to be the chef came across pretty rude as she shouted my order across the room. The Pork and Stuffing roll I had was really nice but I would say overpriced. The Cookies and Cream shake was to die for and could of had more. I think this place needs some money spent on and I read they have a few placed around Newcastle, which means they must have some funds to modernise the place while keeping with the style. It seems like it attracts alot of the oldies that have probably been going there for many years. However, they need to think about the future and giving it a face lift may help to attract the young generation.

I saw this place across and walked in. The staff were very friendly. I ordered a hazelnut latte and chocolate fudge cake with kinder ice cream. They heated the cake up for me and when I took that first bite, I felt like weeping gently because it was sooooo yummy. I will deffo visit again next time I’m in Newcastle

The 1 ‘£’ shown by Google is a bit misleading. Fairly expensive as we had a scone, cannoli, and roast beef sandwich that came with chips. With bottled drinks. The butter for the scone was rock hard from the fridge, making it impossible to spread. The sandwich was fine, they weren’t generous with the chips though. The cannoli was very tasty. The overall cost was more than we expected when we came in though. ~£15

A trip into the past, use to visit regularly 30+ years ago. Nothing much changed. Staff were friendly but disappointed in our snack. My wife had scone with jam and cream, the cream was the cheap soft type used on desserts, scone was disappointing. Make its name many years ago with their Ice Cream not sure it can compete with modern ice cream parlours.

I so wanted to give a higher score because the place looked so homely, and quaint made me feel quite nostalgic. I'm saddened to give such a low score. Unfortunately it was bad from the start where we were glared at by a member of staff behind the counter felt like an inconvenience. Wanted two iced coffees and chocolate cake which was met with a huff like I was causing trouble. Was grumply informed they couldn't as the sockets were fused (of course I don't blame them for this as these things happen) it was just the whole attitude. Watched both assistants treat all the customers with barely veiled contempt. No politeness, no manners and little customer service. Maybe I caught them on a bad day, with the stress of the heat, electrical problems, later in the day, maybe tiredness. Coffee was a good flavour and strong. Cake was a little dry and slightly disappointing. Very little vegetarian selection. Won't be returning.

It's nice to have old school place to get proper Sundays ice-creams, we had knickerbocker Glory and Strawberry supreme really nice but pricey at £6.25 each,but nice experience compared to modern ice cream parlours.

Found this restaurant whilst exploring around Newcastle. My son saw the sign for ice cream desserts which prompted us in. The menu was quite extensive and we decided to have our lunch there. We ordered a milkshake which were thick and tasty. I ordered a salad and son ordered burger. Both fresh and tasty. He was so full after milkshake and burger he couldn't fit in a dessert. So guess next trip will be for a dessert 😉 The ladies were friendly and polite and name us feel welcome

As soon as you wlak in you know youve come to the right place, the menu has everything you could want. Had an epic breakfast icecream waffle, which was delicious. The staff were super friendly, atmosphere is a bit dated but perfect for the atmosphere of the place. Really relaxing and delicious food.
