We felt so welcome and taken care of! Such a cozy pub in a gorgeous location and lovely surroundings. They have an extensive beer list and it's such a good pit stop if you are in the area!

As usual, the 'Maître D' displayed his own unique brand of sartorial elegance. The warmth of his welcome totally non-existent (but a twinkle in his eye). Lots of whinging because he had been busy and his legs hurt. He asked what drinks we'd like - one of our number only drinks water and there was a noticeable change from last time when he replied 'not gonna get rich from you am I', this time it was 'Cheapskate'! Menu is quite varied, portions are HUGE but we did have to ask for cutlery this time, be aware he teases all customers with such antics. be prepared for the (very clean) Ladies loo - one stall has no light, other has light but no loo paper, get used to it! a thoroughly entertaining evening with excellent food. The4 of us will be back as often as we can. and will STILL ask for a pot of tea, just to see his reaction!

Nice little pub . It’s an okay day out - the drinks taste nice and food is yummy ! Sometimes got strange vibes from the place due to poor service but it was quite busy . I also got rude looks from staff , mostly one named Harry . Good for drinks, although . Cleanliness could be improved .

where shall i begin..? my boyfriend and i decided to go for a lovey pub lunch ( or so we thought) after walking my dog sally through the country lanes. However, our lunch date took a sinister turn.... i must say i really did not expect to be gawked at by our waiter, ‘Harry’. I’m making the assumption that he was around 17/18 years old from the cheeky teenage-grin he made me a victim to. Throughout our grub he constantly glared at me like a hawk, subsequently making me feel extremely uncomfortable. Additionally, he proceeded to pout his lips at me when our eyes accidentally met ( although accidental on my behalf, he mistook it as a glaring challenge) . A combination of this intense glaring and lip pursing resulted in me crying on the way back home and my boyfriend extremely angry. To whom this may concern, please ensure your staff are trained in employee etiquette. Thanks

Went to meet friends at this establishment. My child & I were first there. Walked through the entrance & there was a man slumped in the corner. We stood there for a couple of minutes & the man kept looking at us. Eventually, he asked if he could help. I said we had a booking with friends (mentioning names). He did not get up & just pointed to where we are meant to sit. No mention of drinks or menus. We went to the table & proceeded to provide food for my little boy (special needs). Not too much sooner, I heard one of the friends talking. He then looked over & said, “Is he eating?”. This was not directed at me, but to one of the other patrons. I looked over & he was shaking his head at me, then approached & said I should got his permission. With that, I no longer felt I could remain there & left with the first friend to arrive. I always take food for my child everywhere & no one has ever had a problem. Truly disgusted. Never stepping in that premises again. Good news, went half a mile up the road & was welcomed with open arms & fantastic customer service.

Stopped off here with my Parents on our way back from a lovely afternoon in Worthing. A gem of a pub, with a very good welcome from the Landlord and his lovely dog Bailey. My Father complimented their Ale on tap and would have had more if he wasn’t the designated driver. The food was really good and super large portions. Between us we had Scampi and chips, Lasagne and chips and Lamb Shank on a bed of mash and an array of vegetables, and all top quality. It will probably be a while until I’m back that way again but I’ll definitely be stopping for dinner and drinks when I am 👌👍

This was a last minute decision to stop on a Sunday. We had originally stopped at the owl pub up the road but had been warned off of it by some customers coming out so tried this place instead. Lucky we did, popped my head in to check it was OK to bring 3 kids in and it was. Pub was quiet barman served us our drinks and then went off to cook our roasts which I thought was slightly strange but they were delicious and super massive. My kids ate well aswell. I had the beef which was very nice. The pub itself is a traditional family run setup so inside is also traditional decor and slightly dated but the food and drink and service were all very good. So dont expect LED lights and the latest gear. However traditional food and service and a friendly dog are there, and I will be popping back when I have the appetite!!

The Pub is on the Dorking Road and can be easily missed but it's well worth seeking out. It's an oldie Woldy place with a large outdoors area. The owner is a real character. It's a fairly simple menu with daily specials. Food and produce is from local farms. I had a home cooked sausage casserole which was huge with 4 Pork Sausages. The food is always hot.

Tiny little pub on the Dorking road that does the best Sunday Roasts anywhere near Horsham. The beef cuts are lean, firm, and cooked really well done, just the way I like them. Veggies always perfectly done and with some horse radish sauce on the beef and mint sauce on the veggies, there's none better. One warning - you need to know where it is and be planning to stop, otherwise you'll wizz past too fast to stop. Once you know where it is you'll be fine, but first time you may have to go past, find somewhere to turn around and try again. They're taking Covid precautions seriously, limiting numbers and speading out the areas you can sit. Publican and cook wear face masks and gloves. There's hand sanitizer by the door. There's an elderly labrador named Bailey who'll come over to greet you. If you ignore him he'll leave you alone, but if you make a fuss of him you'll have a friend for life.

Returning home from a stay in Arundel we were hungry and stopped at this pub for Sunday lunch. The pub was nearly empty which is a shame as I had the steak and kidney pudding which was awesome, the best I have had. Loads of food on the plates at very reasonable prices. Service was good so no complaints. I would definitely stop for food here again.

First pub on the busy A24 from Worthing to London looks attractive enough from the outside ,large if somewhat disorganised car park . Interior is well overdue for a refurb, cleanliness could be improved. Food edible and plentiful although we did not clear our plates. The one saving grace was excellent chips....but we won’t be back.

We have friends who frequent this pub on a regular basis and, although we have driven past it many times we had never tried it. That was obviously a big mistake as, on our first visit our party of four where immediately impressed. It was a cold day and so the welcoming fires and beamed ceilings provided a cosy ambience. There are plenty of covers and comfortable seating. Although it appears that the landlord is Jack of all trades; manning the bar, cooking the food and serving it, this in no way affected the overall service, leaving four satisfied customers as all our meals were excellent. A word of warning though, the portions are large, however some meals come either small or large. This is good, old fashioned cooking with an incredible choice which includes a daily specials board. Only one of our party managed a desert (crumble and custard) which was reasonably priced and equally large. All food is cooked to order therefore expect to wait but, when it arrives it is piping hot and we'll worth waiting for!

Driven past this pub many, many times over the years without venturing in. Then we found ourselves looking for somewhere at short notice suitable for a Sunday lunch for 4 that also had to be on a Bus route. . ."Let's try The Dog & Duck", and we're all glad we did. Nice welcome from Danny the Guv'nor who's also the Chef, Waiter, Cleaner etc. and is a straight-talking, down-to-earth kinda guy. Very good selection of well-kept Cask Ales at £3.00 a pint!! (I've driven past today 12th October and it's still £3.00 a pint). Danny cooks and serves proper pub food, Sunday Roast, Steak & Kidney pie/pud, Liver & Bacon, Chicken & Ham pie etc. The portions are HUGE, so bring a good appetite with you. If you like good ale, proper pub grub, and having a bit of a laugh then The Dog & Duck is where you need to be!! Cheers Danny! see you soon from Steve, Bob, Chris & Penny

After spending a couple of hours strolling through the market town of Dorking, we decided to revisit one pub that we hadn't visited since 2016.This pub is situated a few miles away from Dorking, on the A24 at Kingsfold. The pub hadn't changed at all in 3years, we were greeted by very friendly staff, a blazing log fire, and a superb menu. The choice of food is amazing with quite a few dishes being homemade. Needless to say our food was lovely, and if you are in that area its well worth a visit. Many thanks from Ray Rosemary and our dog Susie

Only stopped for a quick bite in what used to be a good pub and a good location for the commute between London and south coast on A24. The old speckled hen beer was not as it usually is elsewhere and strangely off and the sandwich was made using very stale bread. We didnt complain, duly paid and wont drop in again.

Lovely, real good pub grub. Local pub on a busy main road which allows overnight stops in a motorhome. Great 3 acre walk in the fields alongside great to let the dogs have a blast after a long drive. Reasonable selection of ales and at normal pub prices. The food though was great with a good choice and best of all a medium or large portion so little wastage. Deffo worth another look when in the area.

Called in for a meal.Didn't book and had no problem getting a table. We were a bit worried at first as the barman was also the chef. How wrong we were. The pub boasts real home cooked food on the boards outside and they are absolutely correct. The food served was very good and cooked fresh. The service was good and was well worth the visit. Only comment is the pub is looking tired and dated and could do with a major spruce up which detracted from its excellent rating. Overall a very enjoyable visit and we will go again.

After we pulled in to the car park, I actually started the engine again ready to drive straight back out again - the first thing you see as you arrive at this pub is a broken bathroom basin, a huge ancient looking armchair sitting outside along with the outdoor furniture, some tatty looking upholstered dining chairs outside and propping open doors, a completely empty car park, and a door bristling with laminated A4 signs: "DO NOT FEED THE DOG' and also one about 'D R U G S', etc. The outside lets it down badly, in short! We were greeted by the publican who was doing a fair bit of moaning about a wedding taking his staff off for the day and when we 5 all ordered different meals he made much of how hard he would have to work to produce our food! I have to say I was having quite serious misgivings at this point. Also, the TV was on the whole time, with some kind of low-rent gp-kart racing programme or something, which didn't add much to the ambience. But in fact the food was mostly pretty good. The ham and chicken pie was absolutely stuffed with meat and served with fantastic mash and loads of veg. Ham egg and chips ("small") was very generous and the chips deserve a place in history books. Chilli was a bit "meh", to be honest. Pretty low spice level and the mince was tough. No frills like sour cream etc. Veg lasagne was much enjoyed though I tasted the meat lasagne and it wasn't that great, though it had a lot of yummy cheesy topping.I'd gladly go back, though hopefully on a day when he had more help so we weren't told off for ordering food. I'd have the pie (he DID recommend the steak mushroom and ale pie, I should've listened to him) or the ham, egg and chips, or in fact anything involving chips!! This guy can definitely cook, don't be too put off by the pub's exterior, try not to mind getting told off for being there, take his advice on what to order, and you'll be glad you went.

I have only been twice which has been a Sunday and how nice to still find a proper English unspoiled pub with a welcoming landlord who has obviously trained his staff to be the same where he is also "head cook and bottle washer" also what is classed as "hands on" instead of walking into an establishment with no greeting whatsoever but being asked "are you dining with us today?" My Sunday roast beef meal was superb in every way and such a kind portion of tender tasteful meat with proper gravy. I will support this more than decent landlord as long and often as I can and tell others. Well done Danny please don't go!!

Spent an evening at this pub, which in my opinion, was worth it, but no need to repeat. The owner / barman / chef, was 70, had been there for 12 yrs, paid 1 million for it and was divorced. Information came freely, along with grumbling. We were told off because we didn't finish all our food. Everything is home made by said owner. All portions are very big, and were advised not to have starters and dinners. As we didn't obey, it was made clear we only had ourselves to blame. As we were the only four in the pub, the owner found time to sit at the bar and watch Eastenders ( quite loudly) and enjoy a few whiskeys. It was a quirky evening and felt a bit like Abigail's Party.

We pass this pub frequently en route from West Sussex to family in Twickenham. So last Friday evening we decided to stop for an evening meal. On telephoning to book we were advised that we may well be the only (restaurant) customers! We subsequently learnt that the restaurant is very busy at lunch times. So we arrived to a warm welcome from the landlord. In addition to the 'standard' menu items there were several home made pies on 'specials'. We both settled for the small ale pie. Well, together with a full range of fresh vegetables this was more than sufficient. There was also a good selection of desserts, again some home made. There was one other family dining. End result was a very enjoyable meal, reasonably priced and a quiet environment.

The Dog & Duck pub can only be described as eclectic, and sadly has seen better days. The pub in fact is run down and appears to be staffed almost exclusively by a single person, the cook, who also serves behind the bar. This does lead to a few timing issues but if you're not in a hurry then it isn't a problem.Beer wise, very good with well kept real ales on hand-pull, plus a few of the usual mass produced.Food wise, above average, in fact quality and quantity exceeds expectations based on the decor. I had Ham, egg and chips and it was good & large, and around the battered dining room area Corn-beef hash & lasagne was going down a storm. Not probably a place for a romantic or high class event, but if you're passing and want good honest food and a decent beer, as a couple of fishermen in the bar testified, then this is a good place to visit.

My wife and I stopped here for lunch today (August 11th, 2015). The pub is old – 14th or 15th century. It’s essentially an early inn; local brick, wood beams and old tiles, very attractive. Bed and Breakfast and temporary camping/caravanning appears to be very much part of the business today. We were warmly welcomed and shown an excellent menu and the ‘Specials’ blackboard. We ordered drinks, chose a table and admired the many interesting features of the bar, from the original, wide ingle-nook fireplace with built-in seats on each side to the fascinating memorabilia decorating walls and shelves: souvenirs from North America and Australia, countless unknown coins and currency notes. We finally made our choices, Hunter’s Chicken, bacon, mashed potatoes, vegetables and barbecue sauce for me and lamb’s liver, bacon, onion gravy, new potatoes and peas for my wife, generous portions, well-presented. Both dishes were superbly cooked and tasted marvellous.Conclusions.1, Prices are very reasonable for the Surrey/Sussex border.2, This is not a ‘fast-food’ outlet as almost everything appears to be cooked from fresh.3, We find it slightly difficult to relate to some of the negative comments on this pub.4, If pressed to find a negative point, the only (minor) comment I would make is that the Chef put a bit less cooked cheese on the 3 generous slices of bacon that sat on top of the chicken.5, We will return.

We thought this looked like a nice country pub, but on arrival the owner/manager seemed to be in a bit of a fluster, there was no staff so he was both serving in the bar and cooking the food, there was also no atmosphere in the pub whatsoever. The food was ok and was a huge portion, but it was just to much, even for me and I have a healthy appetite, it just wasn't good enough, when we go out for dinner we expect something at least as good as we can cook ourselves but preferably better, this has been the worst place we have been to in this area so far, and personally we won't be returning.

The locals were friendly and welcoming with plenty of advice to offer on which bitter was the best. We were 'just in time' for lunch, so don't go expecting all day food, there is a gap between lunch and dinner. Good atmosphere, nicely olde worlde without being twee. A startling little extra was to discover several fields around the back, which although a bit shabby in places were host to a native American re-enactment group who had set up camp and really looked the business! A good stop between leaving the M25 and striking the coast. the Ponytailpoet would happily eat there again!

im sure this place has seen better days. Like so many pubs it's pretty empty weekday lunchtimes apart from the ubiquitous local, normally with a dog, propping up the bar chatting to the barmaid. It's actually quite a nice old place sort if on two levels, but with the lower level given over to a dining area. It does look a bit "seventies" but nothing wrong with that. I counted three tables of diners which I'm guessing is pretty much par for the course. The food is fine. Sticking with seventies I had a perfectly acceptable gammon with pineapple, chips and peas. The menu is full of pub staples and in my view there's nothing wrong with that.Good selection of beers and spirits and a friendly enough barmaid. All in all a nice enough place.

We didn't receive a warm welcome, they didn't have any draught beer ("we only serve bottles because of low sales") for a pub that is on a main road with lots of passing traffic this is disappointing. There was a television on showing football, nobody was watching it but the staff didn't turn it off or even lower the volume - it was really intrusive. The interior is grubby, dated and dirty and the decor VERY dated - a lick paint costs very little. And as we left I overheard the bar staff making a comment about us that he thought we didn't hear - the arrogance and rudeness was unbelievable. Whilst the current landlord remains I will never visit again, a great shame really because I pass this pub regularly.

The indoor decoration looks like coming straight from the 70's, The menu looks also outdated - we went for a roast and it was a complete disaster: the food was tasteless, poorly presented, and it took ages before being served... despite being the only customers that Sunday.Starters were clearly bought at the closest supermarket and certainly not home-made as you'd expect (pate is so simple to cook...)We were looking for a country pub to have a nice experience, warm atmosphere and simple food were our drivers.
