We stayed for one night in room one on a Wednesday evening. Room clean and tidy. Clean towels and bedding. Kettle to make coffee and tea. Bathroom clean and good shower. Good value for a night's stay. We met friends for an evening meal in the pub. Amazing and freshly cooked indian food on site - onion bhajis were delicious, followed by punjabi butter chicken with rice and garlic nan. Fruit crumble for dessert was so scrummy 😋 Staff were friendly and welcoming We booked breakfast for 8am, but when we came down from our room, the pub was closed with all doors locked. We had expected it based on feedback from other guests. No learning taking place.. 8.15am, a builder arrived and phoned one of the owners. The pub was opened and told to come in. No apology or a good morning. Asked for two coffees, but cups were dirty but they replaced one of them with another dirty cup. Breakfast was good, full English breakfast, tasty, well cooked and hot. Toast and butter with coffee or tea. Made to feel we were an inconvenience to the family owners. Not a good customer experience. The staff member serving breakfast was polite and efficient. Food is very good here, freshly cooked and of a high quality. It is a shame the family owners don't get the importance of a good customer experience. Being punctual doesn't cost much. It was lovely to see monkjack deer in the fields when we woke up this morning - another selling point for the room and stay. Recognised new owners in place juggling a lot with a family, running a pub, accommodation, and ongoing building work, but please remember the customer experience. We would definitely stay again as convenient to our travel plans. The Indian food is definitely worth a try and they do take aways as well 👍

This lovely pub serving both Asian and English food was a real find. The staff were so helpful, the atmosphere friendly and totally relaxed. We ordered both Asian and English dishes , all of which were thoroughly enjoyed. The biggest surprise was the modest pricing which belied generous portions. We were amazed by the friendliness of the staff, owners and other customers. If you want a relaxed happy evening this is the place to visit. Nothing was too much trouble We were celebrating a special evening, The treatment we received made it an unforgettable happy experience.

Last went here for a Sunday lunch, traditional roast and was good. Unfortunately didnt realise it had been taken over, now a mish mash indian pub grub place. 1 waitress who is also serving the bar. Restaurant empty so didnt stay. Probably best either being an indian restaurant or just a pub with snacks. No hanging baskets outside, No warm open fire, No atmosphere any more so didnt stay. Shame for whag used to be a nice local pub.

On arrival they could not find key for my room so I was booked into another, so got settled only 90 mins later the key was found and I was asked to move.🫤 the room was clean and fresh but small rubbish bin was full, tea bags were just loose (assume just taken from a box)not individually packed - not hygienic, the tv screen is faulty and there were large streaks of pink/purple over screen. Following day went for breakfast, only person there, no decaf tea and took 20 mins to get my pot of tea, did not go for full English so settle for scrambled egg on toast, it came on wholemeal bread, good job I like wholemeal as no choice was offered. Following my day out my room and not been tidied, so went to get milk for a coffee and was told I should have asked for it to be done, I was not told this on checkin or my documentation. Very disappointed with the overall service for the price paid.

My husband and I were cycling from Andover to Romsey and we stayed overnight at the Dog & Crook. The room was very comfortable, the only tricky thing was adjusting the shower from too hot but manged it by getting a towel to move it from 38 degrees! We had an evening meal chicken Tikka which was excellent & the breakfast was also delicious and fantastic value for money. The staff & owners were helpful & friendly so I would highly recommend either staying, eating or both!

We visited for Sunday lunch on way back from weekend away as a pit stop. Booked on the app night before and was surprised to be able to get in for Sunday lunch as other places all booked. When we got there very quiet in restaurant only 2 other tables occupied. Food was OK ish not the best roast. Its more like a locals pub. More locals were drinking in the bar area rather than in the small eating restaurant part so it lacked atmosphere. Service was very good though.

Let’s start with the positives - friendly welcome and great service at the bar. Sadly the food we ordered, a curry and fish and chips, was so disappointing. The curry was tiny, 3 chunks of chicken and a thin sauce served in a dessert bowl alongside a small portion of rice and a quarter of a nan. The small portion of fish was served skin side up, with it being clearly visibly through the thin batter. The chips were good but we left feeling totally underwhelmed and won’t return for food. The portion sizes and quality were not reflected in the prices at all.

Went for Sunday lunch having been recommended about the Saturday night curry by a relative. The food was not even luke warm we sent it back to be reheated. 2 were slightly warmer but mine still cold so I returned it again and still not much warmer by which time appetite had gone and I didn't eat it. On questioning other diners, they confirmed food not hot or great but didn't complain to staff. The curry night may be good but sadly an English roast is not their forte and next day my husband had an upset tummy. The waiting staff were great and apologetic and reduced our bill but the kitchen staff need some serious coaching. It felt like food is plated up in advance to be honest and the cauliflower cheese was the only vegetable brought out in a separate dish was really hot. Not very cheesy but very oily.

We sat for an hour and a half with a baby and a 6yo, there were two other table of 2 and 3. Not acceptable to wait that long. I went to the bar to tell them I wanted to pay the bill for the drinks and to cancel any food. They were happy to take my money for drinks and tell me that I was being unreasonable because our food was just about ready to come out.. it was 1.5 HOURS we were waiting till that point! The table next to us had two beef and one nut roast.. the nut roast was stone cold and the lady was still sat waiting 25mins later for her replacement when we left. Terrible! Our last experience with the last owners was amazing.

Looking forward to trying the Dog and Crook for lunch since it was under new management. It was empty when we arrived at 12 pm . We ordered our food but had to wait about 45 mins to be served even though empty. My friend’s hamburger was raw so we had to send it back. By the time it came back I had eaten my meal. When my friend got the meal back the chips were cold. Really disappointed and will not come back. The waitress was lovely and asked for our feedback on burger as she wasn’t sure why we said it was unacceptable to be pink?

Thought we'd try somewhere different for Sunday lunch and support a local business so based on the website menu we called and booked a week in advance. On arrival they said we weren't in the book so they couldn't serve us!! We asked them so check again and, low and behold, we were in a "second book"! So 1. Why do they have two books? 2. Why, given this, didn't they check the second book before turning us away? 3. Why would they want to turn us away anyway when there were only two oher groups having lunch the whole time we were there??So we were seated and the refurbed area was very nice. We were asked for drinks - no list, the server just told us all the wines they had. Off she went but we were left wondering why we'd still not been given any menus. Drinks came and then we found ouy why: they were only serving three things - Beef, Lamb or veggie roast!! This was not what it said on the website and was not mentioned on booking (the website has an "eased down" menu but still lists a number of other options on Sunday along with "Raosts are avalable"...)So we had two beef and two lamb - they were pretty good although while the lamb was thick slices the beef was only three thin slices (wife only had two...)There was a choice of two deserts - we went for two sticky toffie puddings which were nice. Good choice of Orchard Pig or Thatchers Gold draft cider too. When the bill came we noticed that all the roasts had been charged a pound more than it said on the blackbord! Oh well, maybe this was the "built in" tip...Food was good but we have had as good or better elsewhere without all the other issues so unlikely to go back.

Turned up to find there was only one table that accommodated more than 4 people, which hadn't been reserved. Having visited with the same friends just before lockdown we thought we would return, menu was limited which we didn’t mind that. I had the fish and chips, there were bones in the fish and it was very greasy along with the onion rings, our friend had the pie, too much pastry and a small spoon of mash, only 1 veg broccoli which was very hard, other friend had hunters chicken which was a breast cut into 3 with bbq sauce chips and small bowl of salad, my husband had chicken burger, that came out on a narrow board, so narrow his food kept falling off into the table. The ice cream was lovely. The bill came out with £11.00 service charge, the gentlemen we were with just paid it but even with the ‘eat out to help out’ it was expensive for an out of the way pub to charge for service, not sure we will return anytime soon.

Our experience with this pub started out ok. We sat on a table outside. The staff (at first) were very friendly and welcoming. The mains were nice, I wouldn’t race to have them again but it was nice. The deserts weren’t very nice at all. Then we came to the bill. There was a 10% tip added which we asked to have removed because we had cash to leave a tip. Then the issues started! The eat out to help out scheme was on at the time which obviously the server was struggling to understand. After working out the bill wrong several times and us explaining why the servers attitude was absolutely awful! Huffing and puffing, rolling eyes, arguing with us. It is a new scheme for everyone so it is understandable that there are going to be teething problems whilst people get the hang of it. However I do not expect that attitude from my 3 year old let alone a fully grown woman. After that we chose not to leave a tip as our experience had been ruined.

Whilst away on holiday in the New Forest we decided to make the most of the 'Eat out to Help Out' scheme so searched local pubs/restaurants that were participating. The Dog & Crook in Romsey came up and had a table for the evening we were looking at. On arrival we were taken to our table by a really helpful member of staff who couldn't do enough for us. We ordered our food and drinks and it became clear that this was a 'locals' pub as everyone else seemed to know each other. The food arrived in a timely fashion and on the whole was OK. I asked for my steak to be cooked medium/rare and it arrived medium/well but it was tasty. My wife had the pie of which there was a lot of pastry and not a lot of filling, accompanied by a spoonful of mash! The veg were very good though. The desserts were also good. The biggest problem came when we asked for the bill. Initially they brought us the wrong bill, which was more expensive and eventually when the correct bill arrived the owner was fiddling about with it on the table and didn't seem to want to let us look at it. My wife picked it up to ensure this was actually our bill and we noticed a 'discretionary' tip had been added. At the bottom of the receipt it stated that this could be removed and wouldn't cause offence. We asked for it to be taken off as we wanted to pay the bill on card and leave a tip in cash as the service on the whole had been very good. When we asked the owner to remove it she grabbed the receipt and walked off, she brought it back a short time later with the adjusted amount but clearly wasn't happy!! We paid on our card and didn't get a thank you or any sort of courteousy she just walked off with the card machine. I was so annoyed about this attitude that I decided in fact that I wasn't going to leave a tip. As I walked out I said goodbye and the only reply I got was a sarcastic grin! Needless to say I won't be returning to the Dog & Crook any time soon because of this and what was essentially mediocre food for the price.

As we live a stone throw away, we thought we should support our local and went for a meal. Only 3 tables occupied and all three had issues with the food.Ours was edible but generally poor with dried up burger and fish that was more batter than fish. One table had starter and main delivered at the same time whilst the third table sent two steaks back and declined a third. Also the bill comes with a cheeky 10% added as service charge which certainly was not clearly stated on the menu. On the Covid front, a hand sanitizer was available on the way in whilst there was non on the way out and non of the staff wore masks delivering food.Overpriced and unappetizing with less than ideal covid planning sums it up and we regret we will not return- which is a shame as it would have been so convenient had it been any good?On a bright note, the staff serving were pleasant even if what they had to deliver was poor and their covid training, less than perfect. It saddens us to suggest it is worth going 1/2 mile further to the Wheatsheaf where consistently good food seems to be available and covid arrangements were excellent!.

Food service has become very slow and confused, since the Covid lock-down. First time, ordered 2 rounds of sandwiches, only one arrived after 30 mins. Second time, ordered a shared scotch egg and pork pie platter, took over an hour!!!! Our order went to a different table and got touched so had to thrown away. Both orders were cold food and required very little preparation and so it makes you wonder what the hold up is? As far as I can make out only one chef, one bar man, and one waitress and may be three table covers over lunch. Cattle prod required in the kitchen I think.

Wow. Googled this place as we were staying at Marwell Hotel for the Zoo the following day but were unimpressed with the hotel restaurant so decided to try something else local. Lovely warm welcome as we entered and had no issue bringing our 5 year old and newborn along for dinner. We sat on the terrace and the feel of the place is great.Great service from all of the staff and the food was exceptional, couldn't believe our luck for the value. Top class food at pub prices. We would thoroughly recommend the dog and crook to anybody looking for great food, great location and friendly staffWill definitely visit again if we are on the areaThanks for a memorable visit.

What a treat! We had a recommendation from a friend so we made the journey for my husbands birthday. We had a lovely welcome from the staff on arrival as well as the warm welcome from the newly refurbished building. The food was not just the usual pub grub you would expect to find. It was Presented beautifully and tasted even better. The chef even came out to introduce every dish. We were all so impressed we will be returning for my birthday. We will have to travel over 80 miles from home but it is worth it! Thank you all for such a wonderful experience

I visited here with my wife and what a lovely pub. The bar staff were very friendly and welcoming and nothing was too much trouble for them. Pub has just been redecorate and done to a high standard. We had the most amazing 4 course dinner all cooked amazingly & presented to a very high standard. We were also lucky enough to sample some of the homemade chocolates & ice cream and all I can say to that is wow. James & Kathryn have an amazing team behind them from Chefs to bar staff and I would highly recommend you visit. We will definitely be returning to sample more of the amazing food on offer as well as the homemade chocolates & ice cream

In these troubles with all that is going on it was great to go out for a meal and stay some place away from home. The rooms are spotless, very clean and tidy. The atmosphere of an oldie world pub. The food was to die for and the Sunday roast “Just like” mums”I fully recommend this pub. New manager and chef and menu. It’s OK to just turn up at the moment but I suspect and the rules relax further better to book because this place will take off.

Reopened on the 4th of July nicely redecorated with a new chef. We had the pub menu and the food was excellent cooked to order and nicely presented. We also tried the home made chocolates to die for. We can’t wait for the new fine dining menu.

A friend and I had a lovely meal at the Dog and Crook. They were very accommodating with our catering needs (my friend is vegetarian and gluten free) and they were more than happy to serve me a smaller portion of a main meal rather than my usual menu choice of a starter or children’s meal due to weight loss surgery.

I stayed at the Dog and Crook's in one of their gueshouse rooms. These rooms were newly built and very modern with all necessarily facilities. In the morning you have a beautiful view over the meadow. It gives you a relaxing countryside feeling while also being close to the city. Staff were friendly and they served an excellent breakfast too!

We came today for my grandads birthday meal and it couldn’t have been any better, the staff were very kind and accommodating and the food was amazing! My auntie had the natchos which we were given a super hot sauce on the side with a warning it was very hot and I can honestly say it was super hot! Was good to try though, I had a buffalo fillet steak which was out of this world, I honestly can’t recommend this place more and I will certainly be back, thankyou again.

No mention of beers on web site. The only image is of the well known Don't Care Beer called DoomBar, and Ringwood. Very similar dull beers. Why do people ruin pubs when what they really want is a restaurant. Description on website is illiterate, not proofread.

My wife and I visited for lunch on a Thursday. The pub/restaurant was almost empty.A two- or three-course set menu is offered, with a good choice of dishes in each section. My wife chose fish and chips (with beer batter). I went for a breast of pheasant dish from the specials board. The fish and chips were fine. My pheasant dish was excellent. The meat was tender but had bits of roast crispness on the exterior. Very nice. The vegetables were al dente and the crushed new potatoes had a good texture. There was a good amount of tasty sauce. I also enjoyed my pint of Razorback ale. As we were leaving, I had an enjoyable humorous exchange with the manager and the chef. 'The pheasant dish was very well cooked.' 'Don't praise him too much or he'll want more money!' 'It really was exceptional, though. Someone who can cook like that should...' 'Get out!' Had there been more customers to give some atmosphere, I would happily have awarded 5 stars.

Still an independant I believe, although under new management this place delivers a warm welcome and service with a smile.Try the very reasonable Gammon Egg and chips, my only grumble being a few more chips would be appreciated however I left feeling full but not bloated! The beer is varied and very well kept. All together a very pleasant visit and good value too.Servicemaeive

Which is why I was absolutely shocked to see the place has been redecorated!!!! MUCH MUCH BETTER! A lot cleaner and much fresher look to the place has really brightened it up! Will deffo be returning next week!

Used to eat here regularly. Since change of ownership the whole experience has nosedived. We first tried after the change a few weeks ago. The food seemed okay but became inedible because the gravy was so salty. My partner refused to pay because she couldn't eat it. They accepted this and offered free sweets. We thought it would have been proper for the landlord to come and discuss the problem but he seemed uninterested. Today we tried again. A new menu offering different size meals was good although on plain paper. First there was the coldness of the welcome. Then the dirty knife. Roast dinner in a bowl was strange. Would have been a nice meal if it wasn't stone cold. The vegetables had hardly been shown the pan and were so under cooked and also cold. They were served to four people in one badly chipped dish. We had waited a long time for the meal to come and had a lot less time. We should have sent it back but we had little time. Also we didn't see much of the waiting staff. So we ate it and mentioned the problem. The young waiter and waitress staff that were dresses in dirty uniforms did apologise but again, the landlord did not appear. I'm afraid that the poor ambiance, issues with cleanliness, poor service, problems with the food and lack of interest from the landlord means we will not be returning to one of our previously favourite places

We were in the area and this place looked good enough to give a go. We will come back to the area just to visit this place again. Really welcoming friendly staff, lovely service, decent menu and the food was spot on. We tried the Roast Beef and Lamb Shank. The beef was perfectly done, the Lamb shank was probably the best I have had in several years. Veg was perfectly cooked so it was soft but still crunchy. Everything was full of flavour. The gravy was so good we asked for more. The only bitter sweet moment was that we were too full and satisfied with the main that we had no room for dessert. We'd definitely recommend.

My daughter and I found this cafe by accident. Here are our thoughts. 1. too small to allow dogs indoors. 2. could do with a bit of a refresh. The chair pads were stained and there were grease stains up the wall by our table. 3. toilet was very clean but on the first floor which meant climbing some very steep steps. Not disabled friendly. However my daughter who is vegetarian had a really good choice of foods and thoroughly enjoyed her meal. The young staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. The coffee was delicious as was my hummus platter with Greek salad. The prices were good and I would highly recommend but I think it could be even better with a bit of a refurb. Didn't get to see the garden as it was too hot to sit outside but from the photos it looks really nice.

Portway Inn, was the best place for breakfats for my family and I. we use to go each week. Todday we were turned away and was told they no longer accept outside customers only residents only. I have taken a picture of each of these. There terms and conditions, there website, their menu and when you walk towards the reception entrance from car park, no where does it say residents only can get breakfast. what a waste of time and fuel. I am so disappointed.

Lovely pub, full of atmosphere and really old (grade 2 listed with parts from 16th century) we had perfectly cooked sirloin steaks. Ladies in heels beware, the paving between the car park and entrance has some missing pointing with deep gaps, enough to either wreck your shoes or test your ability to resist gravity if it's dark or you aren't watching where you walk. Lovely pub, masses of parking although no disabled parking bays to be found (although there may be one which is almost faded out so hard to be sure) which is a shame and they could certainly add a couple more as if you are disabled the walk across the car park would be too far for most.
