Food was disgusting chips were hard fish was sloppy spent £30 will not order again would not of orded if I had of seen the review i phoned up got not going do anything about as I had put all food in bin

Really gutted with my fish and chips 😞 i was looking forward to them and thought they would be really yummy as the last time i had them from DJs, they were. I had a small cod and chips, opened it up to a very small cod, this was really nice tbf. The chips were awful, most were still a little hard and some tasted like they were bruised, couldn't finish them all sadly. This order cost me over £10 with a curry sauce (which was fine)

Having lived in the bay all of my life and had fish and chips from most places, this is the worst ever. Chips were old, like they had been re-cooked. Fish wasn't much better. No taste, small and not very nice batter. Expensive too..Wouldn't eat here again..

Only open 5 until 8 so choice is limited after certain time. Also chips were very brown. Actually tasted better than looked but would rather have meal across the road for similar price

Was very disappointed with our fish and chips tonight, chips tasted very odd. My husband said his beef pie was tasteless. Curry sauce not very nice either. Won't be coming back!. Feel ripped off!!!

First time we have used these guys, great service and good food at a very reasonable price.

We recently moved to the area and wanted to try out a local fish and chips, this was the second nearest to us, we tried to order online but it didn't work. So my partner went down to buy, he said the smell of stale oil and grease hit him as entered the shop. He ordered and brought home, but the fish batter was soggy, and a weird colour, the fish inside was okay, but couldn't eat the batter. The chips where a rotten colour too, and almost rancid, they went straight in the bin and I wouldn't let the kids eat. So disappointed. and out of pocket ££ Avoid!

Decided to get a takeaway of two Regular size Cod & Chips I thought the size of the fish portion was small & was grey in colour & lacked flavour, the chips were under cooked & lots of small inedible pieces. Most of the meal ended up in the food recycle bin not great value @ £21.60 to say the least. As a local will not be returning & will not be recommending

Just had cod and chips no large cod had to have medium chips looked like they had been warmedup not fresh this place is not what it was very poor

So looking forward to fish and chips here. Only open for a short window Fri/Sat night 5 till 8 in winter... I presume due to seasonal needs. I would have thought would maximize on this window... But no.... We went in and were told not taking orders...6.15pm... Then... we will take order but 15 min wait... Which was a bit of a pain but agreed to wait and placed order only to be told... No, not taking your order... Will speak to cook... So we decided to try Squires up the road instead.... Who were amazing and customer focused . Sorry DJ you won't be getting our custom again... No matter how good your chips might be... Or whatever the season.

First time eating here, only ordered the chips and curry sauce, safe to say the chips looked old and I was the first one in the shop at opening at 5.00. Looked on previous reviews and people saying the same. Maybe just a simple oil change may do it.

Tried DJ’s as it was the nearest to us really enjoyed it fish and chips was a dream, gravy was on point which was a bonus recommended to anyone reading this all the way from Coventry 👍🏻

This is a place not to visit food is cold size very poor very pricey for what you get never sure when they are open and to add to all this the staff are very rude

OMG, absolutely the worst fish and chip takeaway ever tasted. Fish was absolutely soaked in oil. They advertise that their fish sizes are by weight so assume that includes the oil. Ordered a large cod that was the size of a small in my local chippy. Chips weren't that better, where they were so hard and tasted althful. Definitely won't be going there again. Exbortant prices as well.

Can’t recommend this place enough. Hot, non greasy, jolly good portions. Very pleased and regularly use them.

Chips dry and chewy? Weird. Cheese and onion fritter was a rip off... Small thin frozen version. I am a local and won't be going again. If you are on holiday, go to the London Fryer, well worth the extra drive.

What a dumbo serving there tonight asked for battered jumbo sausage and chips twice and a plain jumbo sausage and chips when got back to caravan only had the battered sausage and chips (have checked and he did charge me correctly) so have had to go out again to get something else

Extremely "Meh". A regular fish was the size of a small, back home (but almost the price of a large) and the batter wasn't even slightly crispy, nor were the chips. Salt and vinegar, although requested, were practically non-existent. Service friendly and fast, but the food leaves much to be desired.

Do not go here, chips were terrible and massivly overpriced..£17.50 for small undercooked fish, 2 x chips and a large sausage....avoid if you can at all costs

Travelled all the way down from Cheshire whilst on holiday decided to have fish and chips as we were ordering the staff were very rude and giving dirty looks.Once received the food the fish was ok but the chips were very hard which seemed like the they were cooked in old oil and were disgusting.

Really good! Food was all fresh and hot. The lady who took my order was polite and friendly. Easy to park outside the front and well priced.

Went to regular chippy, was shut, googled next closest, what a win, grub was better than regular, looks like I’ll be swapping. Nice and hot, and the young chap being trained was super polite and professional. 👍

Chips were shocking!!! Dry cold and hard sausage and batter was nice as it was freshly cooked but the chips were thrown in the bin worst fish and chip shop in paignton. I contacted the owner and he was just rude Wouldn't listen explained he was in the his profession all his life don't think so!!!

The worst fish & chips I've had in my life. My usual chip shop in Preston, Paignton "was extremely busy so decided to go to DJ's chip shop as a change is good and sometimes you might find better! How wrong was I!! The regular cod was like a child's portion with hardly any batter, not fresh! Chips were dry and stale with no taste and to top this off were £4 more expensive than my local! Felt ripped off. The girl serving made you feel uncomfortable with her unfriendly manner in serving. All in all a bad experience. I'm sticking to to my old faith full chip shop , no matter how long the queue. I really was very disappointed.

Absolutely awful! Terrible service. The fish was soggy with grease, the batter was soaking wet. (I wish I had taken a picture) the chips had frozen lumps in them. Worst chip shop I have ever been to in my life. Extremely over priced for the bland half cooked rubbish we received. Avoid at all costs.

On holiday at nearby caravan park closest chippy so stopped here, there was a massive queue outside which I thought was a good sign. We waited an age for the worst fish and chips I’ve ever tasted. The small cod at £5.65 was much much smaller than expected so small it’s barely big enough for a child’s portion in addition to which the batter was really greasy and thin, overall it was totally tasteless. I ordered a large chips to share amongst 2 adults and a child, glad I went for the larger size as there was barely enough to feed three and definitely not enough if you’re hungry I do not recommend at all, overpriced horrible food EDIT Thank you for your reply. My review was based on food I’ve had from similar establishments. The fish looked liked a piece of frozen fish that had been bought from the supermarket, the size, sorry WEIGHT. Would not have been an issue if it actually looked like a piece of fish in batter rather than a flat triangle of fish that had been sat around in a freezer for a few years, the batter was thin and stuck to the paper, the fish was tasteless, mentioned in my previous review but not addressed! Like I said For the price Ive paid in other establishments i expected potion sizes fit for a king, but I suppose you’re milking the market you have and as I would imagine most of your customers are people on holiday you don't care cos it’s unlikely they’ll be back As for asking about portion sizes having waited in a queue for 30+ minutes just to order the food that was the last thing on my mind but hindsight is a wonderful thing, but having accurate pictures that reflect what your food actually looks like would go a long way too Reviews are meant to provide a guide for other people. Address people’s concerns, which all seem to say the same thing, rather than calling everyone a liar

Disgusting, do not go here. I’d give less than one star if possible. Chips rock solid, burger was dry, fish portion was more like a chicken nugget with the thinnest amount of wet batter. The reason people put reviews isn’t to moan, it’s to make other people aware of what to expect and so to avoid the same mistake, or if it’s amazing to encourage people to go. This place however is not amazing it should be closed down the food is inedible and the staff are EXTREMELY rude.

3 stars is for the mini chicken fillets. The chips were hard like they had been sat there ages. And the curry sauce we ordered was gravy sauce. Not sure why Devon live have recommended Djs. Won't be visiting here again.

Good quality scampi. Really easy to order online and simply collect. No place to eat indoors but it is well presented and clean. Only open 5-8 as of May 2023.

Funny how you keep all the fake 5 star reviews but call out all the 1 stars as ex employees or liars?? Hmm, something beyond fishy, just like the ammonia smell coming from your "cod"...

I've since reported to the local EHO. But thought I'd share my experience. Food poisoning got me and my family this last Friday. This was the only meal we had all shared throughout the day, so 99% sure that this place is responsible. When contacting them, they have denied even serving me. So here we are, 3 days later amd still paying for the experience. Do not go!

Ordered a fairly large order at DJs yesterday. All the fish was cook perfectly, the batter wasnt too thick which is always a bonus. The chips are a must have, always nice and crispy. Would 100% go again

Went DJs fish and chip shop today had haddock and chips ,cod and chips, curry sauce and mushy peas The fish portion was tiny ,the batter wasn’t very good also to thin On the plus side, the chips & curry sauce were both nice. Wouldn’t go back.

Really friendly and helpful staff. We'd placed a large order and it was no trouble. I'd have liked a more bubbly, crispy batter on my cod but that's a personal choice. There were no leftovers proving everyone enjoyed it.

Called in on mother's Day with my son and daughter. Although I live in Torquay, have never visited before. Very clean and welcoming. Lady behind the counter very friendly. Chips were a good portion size, we also had fish, sausages, fritters etc, which were absolutely delicious. We all agreed it was the best we'd all tasted in a long time.

one star should be minus 10.....we were starving so we sent out for fish and chip for 4 and a toddler....fish was like small pancake tasteless chips so hard..we were disgusted with our meals best way to deal with this kind of service is not to complain but to let others know about this place....we will certainly NOT go anywhere near this place again....have told many friends and family who will follow suit.....

Called and ordered large chips and large curry sauce and to say that the food was inedible would be putting the matter politely it was disgusting fryers need cleaning and someone needs to be trained on how to use the fryers I will not be going back such a shame as the shop looks so good and well packaged £5.10 wasted

Best food I've had down at the seaside!!

Rather disappointing compared to other visits live nearby but the fish wasn't hot and the batter was sticking to the paper the haddock was a very small portion compared with previous portions not cheap! Will think again before purchasing anything else!

We had a fish & chips takeaway on Thursday 6/10/22 & it was the was terrible. I still wonder if the 'cod' was cod! It was tasteless & very flat. The chips looked very pale & barely cooked. Very disappointed 😞

Terrible Had a large supposed to be a 11oz fish looked half the size .chips OK mushy peas and curry both good hence the 2 stars .the taste of the fish is awful left a Terrible taste in my mouth . Never again sorry dj cook your food In decent oil

We order a large order every month for my residents in a retirement complex and we love the food fantastic quality and the staff are always so helpful and kind to assist us !great service also

The outside looks great, and so I was hoping for great food but it was worst food I have ever had! I should of Googled before coming down. Chips was bland, colourless, and lacking salt and vinegar after asking for loads. I would not be visiting this place again.

Not the cheapest but I have to say they are probably the best quality Fish & Chips in Paignton and you get huge portions.

Arrived at 8pm to order large fish chips and pears but because of the lateness they had sold out but the lady was very accommodating and offered me 10 fish bites which tasted fab, chips also great and the best mushy peas I have had in a long time. 5* rating

Hairs maybe dog hairs in the batter of my fish. Miserable staff when placing the order which was why i didn't ask for a refund, won't be back Edit: why are you on every negative review basically calling the customer a liar? There was not just one but multiple brown or red hairs. And maybe get some more staff. The few times I have used you, you've had different staff working, so maybe you should hire better staff or treat your staff better so that the customer doesn't get rubbish service I suggest no one uses this shop, their attitude stinks

Always excellent and they put it in a paper bag which is ideal for filing with shredded paper.

Not the best experience. Chips were bland, dry and subpar. Paid extra for the smallest sprinkling of cheese. Burger was nice tasting, could’ve done with salad, very bready. Not a fan of burgers being re heated in the microwave either. Curry sauce - normal curry sauce, fine. Sausages - nice taste but extremely greasy and luke warm. Won’t be returning. ** Edit... I think it says it all when the shop is arguing with people who don't like their food in the comments. All it takes is to look at most of their reviews and you will see that the food is of a bad standard. you don't end up in the lowest 35% of places to eat in paignton on trip advisor by serving good food. 75/115 restaurants..... ouch **

We had fish, chips, peas & gravy friday tea time. Staff were friendly and efficient. Waiting time acceptable. So disappointed though. Fish tasteless and chips were like heated up dry ones.

Ate here recently and very professionally run I had a small fish and chips and it was enough to fill me up size and weight was perfect, curry sauce was also very tasteful my meal was so nice Partner had the cod bites and chips and he isn't a fish fan but loved these my kids had a saveloy and battered sausage and ate every last bit Defo will be visiting again when we are down Devon in the summer.

I have been past this place several times and I was impressed by the look of it, I popped in one night with high expectations, I ordered a half pound cheeseburger and chips. the staff were friendly and I was given a device that notifies me when my order was ready, so far great. it was all packed well, I only live 5 minutes away, when I got home and ate the burger was Luke warm and frankly tasteless, I could only taste burger relish. The chips were extremely dry and had a strange taste that you get when you reheat potatoes they were also cold.! So I ditched the chips! I see there are several reviews about the chips, the point of reviews is to learn and not to get defensive and say it’s my own Tate, clearly not as others say the same. The 2 stars are for the look of the place and the packaging. The food would have got zero im sorry to say. If the food quality matched the shop then we would be on to a winner.

Wonderful fish and chip shop, wide range of options and portion sizes all brilliant for the cost. Staff all friendly with quick service, hot and fresh food. Highly recommend the pineapple fritters with vanilla sugar.

Very modern and up-to-date, uses modern technology to ensure you know when your order is ready, offers delivery if wanted, rewards for unlimited re-use of it's own range of large hessian bags, lovely chips (not greasy), great tasting thin batter with a gentle crunch, even after eating slightly more than I probably should, I didn't feel over stuffed with that heavy stomach feeling, which made a very pleasant change from other chippies we've been to, don't take my word for it, give them a try and see for yourself, you won't regret it.

Tried this fish and chip shop when it first opened the fish and chips were amazing was very happy as I live 5 mins away, tried them again fish was awful batter really soggy and greasy gave them the benefit of the doubt we all have bad days, just tried them again still the same soggy greasy batter if you get 2 pieces of fish they put one on top of the other in one box so all the fat from the top fish goes into the bottom fish and your left with a yellow pool of grease ....yuk won't be going there again.

Fish was nice as were the chicken nuggets, however the chips were extremely dry, couldn't eat them. Tasted like warm ups even though I don't think they were as I had to wait for them. Not too my taste but if you like very dry then try them.

Great food. Coming here on holiday from Bristol and a distinct lack of decent fish and chips where we are, this was good quality and very tasty. A little bit on the pricey side but worth paying that extra.

OMG the food was just so yummy and lush.....the menu has soooo much choice. Very organised, clean and covid secure. Order, pay, get given an vibrating order device which vibrates when ur order is ready, food is well wrapped in boxes and thick bags. Keeps food lovely and hot. Enjoy every bit of food ordered, def recommend it and def be going back again before our holiday finishes 😁😁😁👍👍👍 ps staff were extremely friendly, jolly and happy 😛😛😁😁 x
