Seems now to be known as the Baytree restaurant within a garden centre and homestyle complex. There was quite a wide menu and we were happy with our choices (1 salad, 1 sandwich). Service was prompt on arrival and reasonable for food. We were there on a Monday lunch and there were a reasonable number of others there at the time though with space for many more. Handy lunch stop on the way home.

Went for afternoon coffee and cake. Sadly for me, on my last two visits, some months apart, I have been given a stale hard piece of cake. Poor choice of cakes, only one choice and only brownie type alternatives. As the cake was all already sliced, It might be advisable not to slice cake rather than let it dry out before it is required.. Cappuccino was insipid looking making me query if there was any actual coffee in the cup. Staff did not query my complaint and imediately removed the rest of the cake from display. I wonder if I was unlucky or if it was a normal happening. I liked the restaurant but twice bitten, twice shy.

Not dog friendly, only outside which is useless in winter. The restaurant was large and empty so could easily have a dog friendly corner. Don’t serve food till 9.30 so could make that clearer too

The food was great, however the method of ordering and collecting was a little complex and difficult if you are less than active as it took multiple trips to collect the food, find the cutlery and any sauces etc. I think the 1 available toilet for a large establishment to cope with every diner was a mistake.

Have been a few times recently for coffee at The Bay Tree (was Dents) and they have done extremely well coping with Covid-19. They have a one-way system going in and a good system of keeping track of everyone that goes. As soon as someone vacates a table, there is a person there clearing it and cleaning thoroughly. Very, very impressed with their sanitising. And the staff are so very friendly. Well Done.

Very disappointed with our lunch we were told it was a 20 minute wait but we actually waited 1 hour for our food to come. When it arrived two of the meals were only warm and the scampi was over cooked and hard, however we were so hungry we ate it because it was 2:30 by then.

Stopped off at this 'garden centre' to have some refreshment. It has a large modern restaurant, and it was virtually full of people having their Sunday roast for lunch. All we wanted was tea and coffee and some scones while we were en-route on our journey. They had wonderful large scones and despite being busy, service was good, and staff friendly and helpful. If ever I am passing again, I shall pop in.

I’m a regular customer at the Baytree Garden Centre and have spent over £600 there in the past seven months. I arrived there st 11.15am last Sunday, expecting to have breakfast or something else to eat. I was told this wasn’t possible as breakfast ‘stops’ at 11am. Really? On a Sunday?? Breakfast is apparently only available for an hour on Sundays. A crazy system which seems to be in operation not for the benefit of customers, but for the convenience of staff. I was told I ‘could have cake’ For breakfast???? I drove back to Downham Market and had an excellent full English breakfast at Wetherspoons- without any bother or hassle. They serve a wide range of hot breakfasts until 12 noon. And for a lot less than I would have paid at Baytree. I had hoped that this restaurant would get its act together in regard to customer service under the new owners. Obviously that has not happened, and I’m therefore unlikely to attempt to eat there again

I last reviewed this place about 3 years ago. At the time I described it as a wasted opportunity. Every so often we give it another go, but I think all hope has been lost! The menu has not changed for years, and the quality, which has always been somewhat erratic, has taken a sharp downward turn. Two of us had fish and chips. No peas or anything, which I am sure they used to have. The presentation was really poor. The chips were very pale, and unappealing. The plates didn't look very clean. I asked if someone could clean the table and a very sullen woman gave it a quick wipe over, leaving a great smear of ketchup from a previous customer, so we moved to another table. And I don't feel, on balance, that it offers good value. There seems a total lack of coordination with staff duties, and there is a rather chaotic feel to the till area.

Popped in for a light lunch on Saturday. Lots of free tables in large specious barn cafe. Were told to sit where we liked, so chose table by window. After 10 mins we hadn't been served, along with a couple of tables near us, but noticed other tables on the other side of barn who had arrived after us were being served. Took another 5 minutes to attract waitress's attention. She said as they were busy (there were still lots of free tables) our order would take about 15mins, over 20 minutes later it arrived. Our two ciabattas when turned up were actually baguettes. The baked beans on my daughter's meal were tomatoes, onions and beans, which she refused to eat. At no point did anyone check how the meal was, even when we paid. Overall disappointing and wouldn't bother again.

We booked and paid in advance for a table for 9 people for 14.30, arrived in plenty of time, by 15.20 we had most of our food and tea/coffee. Asked for the music to be turned down whilst we waited so at least we could talk amongst ourselves but, it continued at an ear-splitting volume so we just sat and waited and waited........... one of our party was left without any food only to be told that there was a "backlog in the kitchen and it will be another 30 minutes".................. The band would probably been enjoyable if it wasn't amplified to the point of being too loud to be pleasant. The missing sandwiches never turned up but, we received a £5 refund. The scones and various buns were about as small as an adult hand could make them and 2 slices of bread with a little filling for the sandwiches did nothing to redress the balance. If there was a positive side to the family afternoon out it has to be the relief of being happy to reach the car park on the way out so we could at least hear ourselves talk.Poor service, poor value, no apologies for the huge delays / missing food 1/10.

Im very disappointed with the afternoon tea experience my family had today. We had pre-booked for 2:30 and arrived at exactly that time. We waited 50 minutes to even get a cup of tea. In that time we could barely have a conversation as the band was far too loud. We were actually looking forward to the band as we expected it to create an atmospheric background sound which would compliment the event but instead it was drowning. Several members of my family attempted to let the waiting staff know that we were unhappy with one saying 'it's not my problem you need to speak to ........ when you leave' after SHE asked us if everything was ok and we said 'NO'. The staff didn't seem to know what they were doing to the extent where one family member didn't even get her sandwiches and worse still they couldn't rectify it and she went without. The cakes/scones were minuscule and definitely not worth the £13 per head we payed (in advance). We requested a second round of tea and were told that we would have to wait 30 minutes because we were at the back of the queue. How long does it take to poor some boiling water into the tea pots we had. We didn't even want fresh pots or extra tea bags. Everyone knows you can use a teabag more than once. While the food wasn't anything special, we wouldn't have minded if we had received reasonable or even sympathetic service. The lady in charge just tried to make excuses for everything and showed no desire to put right the mistakes made by her staff. She blamed the long waiting times on her 'key waitress' calling in sick and other parties coming in before their time also needing to be served. Surely the parties who were early would expect to wait until their slotted time while you served those who were in the right time slot?We feel that there was a clear lack of customer service and regretted paying in advance. Had we not already paid, we wouldn't have stayed. We feel very let down as this could have been a great family afternoon as the barn itself was very pleasant.

I had booked Sunday lunch some weeks ago to take friends out to lunch. Our friends travelled from Kingston near Cambridge. I booked a table for 1 pm. Around 9 a.m on the Sunday morning we noticed a couple of messages on our answerphone. We had probably been in the garden. One message said "I can't hear you, I will try another line" the second message left simply said "can you come at 12". No name no number. Thankfully after dialling 1471 I called the number and it was Dents. The lady on the other end said "we are terribly busy today and we have no time booked for your visit". I know I booked 1 pm. I was then told they could offer me 12.45 or 1.30 pm. I went for 12.45. But why should I change my plans simply because they failed to note the time? We arrived around 12.35. Got shown to our table straight away and drinks ordered as well as a starter for one of our group. From entering the resteraunt to getting our main course took one hour. So they served us at 1.35 which was the time they preferred us to attend! I like leisurely but I also like attention and one hour before getting our main course is far too long. I cannot fault the food. The meat at Dents on a Sunday is probably the best in the area. But the service can be a tad lacking from time to time. It means we do not go as often as we might. The garden centre itself is not great. Much better very near by. The entrance and parking area is very sad. On a rainy day bring your wellies. And why is there a gaping empty shed leading to the resteraunt. Dents are producing some great food. The rest needs some careful attention. I would think they could make more from the garden centre if it was improved along with the entrance and parking.

I had heard decent reviews from people who had been here so we tried it for a Valentines Day meal. They had a special menu for this event but it was far from special. There were 4 starters available but two of them were unavailable which meant my wife and daughter were stuck with a pea soup they would not have ordered by choice. The situation did not improve when the lamb we wanted for our main course was also unavailable. We all had the Duck with a balsamic reduction instead with the problem being that the balsamic vinegar was not reduced and left a very sharp, acidic taste that was unpleasant. It just didn't work on any level. The Strawberry Creme Brulee for dessert was fine.I had really wanted to like this place but it was a poor meal. On our trip to Norfolk today my wife noticed Dents garden centre. I asked the helpful lady on the till if they had any grass seed, or tree spirals for the bare root saplings that I want to get planted in on my return to North Yorkshire. I felt a tad dismayed that Dents hadn't anything of what I wanted in stock, but the helpful lady by the till recommended us having a meal before we went on to Ely.Now not wanting to sound like Victor Meldrew our baked potato and side salad left a lot to be desired and we both thought that the cucumber seemed tasted bitter. Now glad we are both home.

We have visited the Barn Cafe on numerous ocassions and have never had any complaints, the service and food have always been excellent. The Cafe is a delight in cleanliness and decor.I note that "James" (the only complaint) was not happy re the service, surely it is a Parents responsibility to ensure that their children are "safe", if The Barn did not reach his expectations I would love to know where he normally dines as I find this establishment a delight having eaten in top restaurants in the UK & USA!!!

Oh Dents, you could do SO much better! We attended on 15/09 for breakfast following the nursery run, 2 adults, a 7 month old and 18 month old. We ordered drinks to begin with. The coffees were brought out, food ordered and I had to remind them to bring out the drink for the toddler. We ordered a side of toast for the toddler which came out plain - no butter. We ordered scrambled eggs which were quite soft/runny. They were brought out to us and left. We had to ask for cutlery several minutes later when they brought out some ketchup, by which time the food was going cold. Another point to add - its always wise to place a tray and serve hot food and drinks away from children. Seems a very simple, common sense point to make but apparently not as the coffees were placed in reach of the toddler who promptly tried to touch them. Service generally slow and disorganised. Finally, we ended up having to wait at the till to pay for several minutes. People came out of the kitchen and ignored us and it just so happened that someone walked through and saw us. Not impressed

Been to the farm shop side many times in the past, but this time we went only for a light lunch.Lovely welcome on arrival. Coffee arrived very quickly, it was a good-sized cup and HOT, unlike several other establishments we have visited. We chose tuna & cheese and spicy crayfish sarnies on brown. Can see the food being prepared, and we received them within another 5 mins, all with a smile and friendly chat. Lots of filling with a little side salad.Room very open and spacious, the only slight drawback being the acoustics. Although there were about 20 people present, the room seemed to amplify all noise just enough to make it difficult to have a quiet conversation. But don't let that put you off dining here as the food and welcome more than made up for it.Forgot the prices - much the same as many other restaurants, less than a fiver for the sarnie. We'll definitely be back.

So if you want all round great food, customer service in a large airy timber framed barn restaurant in the country I recommend this. Plus you get the added attraction of a garden centre and workshop too.

I visited here for the first time with my wife and her parents and was pleasantly surprised. The cafe has a spacious modern feel, whilst maintaining a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The menu was very good, with a nice range of locally sourced produce. Portions were a good size, plentiful without being overly large. Prices was also very reasonable. Definitely one of the better cafes attached to a garden centre that I have been to.

Really lovely Interior once you have found the café through a room of 'nothing'. Menu good with local ingredients used and cooked to order...great...however - on my last visit was put off by staff blowing noses, rubbing eyes and generally 'preening' with no hand washing afterwards....really off-putting to receive your plate from someone has just put a dirty hankie back in their pocket! The washroom facilities are good but the cleaner really needs to start to pay attention to detail - for a nearly new premises some parts already looking decidedly 'grubby'. I really enjoy the food but fear this has pushed me back to 'Arbuckles' just up the road.

This is a wonderful cafe in an amazing new building. We have been here twice now for Sunday lunch and once for breakfast. The food is incredibly tasty although the Sunday lunch meat is probably a touch over done. Be nice if they offered the chance of their meat a little rearer. However the service is seriously poor. You have to remind them to take orders after sitting there for twenty minutes, with a 2 year old with us you can imagine the problems. They don't come and offer more drinks and when you remind them they leave your old glasses on the table and they have no idea how to layout cutlery on the table. In their defence this is a cafe/restaurant attached to a garden centre.I think they want to be a very nice restaurant but are struggling to find the line between garden centre cafe and restaurant. What I would say is much, much nicer food than the nearby American restaurant and much much better value.Live with poor service and have a nice breakfast or Sunday lunch. Maybe one day they will find their niche and sort themselves out.

I choose the fish & Chips which was well presented and a good size. Fish was nice but the chips were awful & inedible. The lovely waitress took them back and made some fresh ones but the 2nd lot was just as bad. I noticed that I wasn't the only one that couldn't eat my chips, others was leaving theirs. The barn is a lovely venue, staff are most helpful but I seriously advice management to look at the potatoes they use for chips.

My wife and I stopped at this garden nursery for brunch. Have been to the nursery previously, but as this restaurant was a new addition (about 1 year old), thought we would try it. As it is called a café was anticipating a small outbuilding. Imagine shock horror to be confronted by a huge barn conversion type building. We were gobsmacked, it is absolutely fantastic. Great tables and chairs, extremely pleasant staff, and the food was great too. Would highly recommend this for locals or people travelling on the A 10. It is situated north of Ely and just south of Downham Market. We will definitely return when we visit family in Ely. Finally must say extremely good value for money.

I hate balsamic salad so it was sent back and replaced (maybe ask customers if they would like a dressing?) unfortunately we found the lasagne very dry - lacked sauce and although we ate this we wouldn't order again. dessert was lovely - berry pavlova. both asked for extra cream, which was served in a gravy boat.... maybe some small glass jugs would be useful ?? all in all we would probably return and try another meal. staff friendly and café itself was gorgeous with the wooden roof beams.

I had been looking forward to this lunch out. I had watched the construction of the barn with interest, it is a lovely building. We went for a lunch. Quite a few people in side. A young waitress rushing about. We ordered fish and chips. This came in a metal basket on a wooden board. Very trendy, fish was nice enough but the potatoes were Inedible. I left them, when asked by another waitress who was clearing away if everything was alright I said "well actually no, I couldn't eat the potatoes". There is no point me telling the chef, that's how he likes to do them. Was the reply. She added if you want a refund you will have to ask at the till. I wasn't looking for a refund and actually I hadn't complained but when she saw I left the potatoes she had asked me about the meal. We were going to order a desert and coffee but her attitude upset me and we asked for the bill. At the counter I was again asked if everything was ok, the waitress came over and stood next to him to listen, this felt confrontational so I paid and replied actually no, he said I hope it won't prevent you from returning and I replied it will.

Finally got round to popping in our local Garden Centre cafe. The Cafe building itself is beautiful - all wood and glass. We went hoping to get a late breakfast, but that finishes at 11am, so opted for the lunch menu.We hadn't booked, the weather was bad, and were offered either a 15 minute wait or be seated immediately to eat outside on the large patio area - which was very good considering it was peak lunchtime. We opted for the patio under the eaves of a stunning building. There is a sandwich option, or a main course. Today we were offered a roast, with a choice of chicken, beef, or lamb, with its source stated on the menu (this pleased me as I like to know where my meat is coming from). The cost of a roast is £9.50, bit pricey for a cafe, but it was excellent. Large portion of chicken, fresh veg served separately. I had a ploughman's lunch - also excellent - served on a wooden platter with superb ham, scotch egg, cheese, a well made and seasoned salad, pickles, coleslaw, onion, apple and 2 huge ciabatta type rolls @ £7.95. The hot chocolate is packed with marshmallows, cream, and a flake. I made a joke of asking for a flake for my latte and was brought 3! I then tried a hot chocolate - superb. The service is friendly, the food good, and you get to browse the plants, gift shop, and well stocked food hall after. An excellent place to spend a couple of hours.

Don't like posting negative reviews, probably haven't done one before, but this was a total disaster. A lot of money has been spent on this place but someything appears to have gone wrong. We went to their first evening event which was on Valentines Night in February and it was very good. That is why we took a chance on this one. We intended making it a regular venue. The initial idea of paying upfront and pre-selecting your menu did not sound good but we gave them the benefit of the doubt, even though it seemed overpriced. (£25 a head) . The same menu would have cost you £30 a head on the night. Unfortunately we were not sent the menu , as promised, , so on the day of the meal , I received a phonecall asking what we wanted to eat that night. This meant that I had to have the menu read to me over the phone whilst myself and partner selected what we wanted that night. .Anyway, benefit of the doubt, we turned up .Sorry we did. Photocopied cards on each table containing individual's menu choices (Who thought of that one?) . Served no purpose as waitresses did not refer to them and it looked a little like a children's tea party. . Another table we talked to the next day said that they were forgotten about and had to wait an hour for their meal. Food was not good. Obviously it was cooked in bulk but it was not of good quality. I had issues with the main course which was a lump of fat with a meat insert. Starters and desserts were left by ourselves and other diners in our vicinity. When I mentioned my discontent with my meal to our waitress it was met with a shrug, but ,too be fair, she was young , and it is the fault of the management in not training their staff. Otherwise they did their job as expected.I originally posted this review and took it off as I felt I may have been too harsh but having talked to fellow diners the next day I feel that it was fair as there were other unhappy customers there that night with other issues. We do our utmost to support local businesses ,shops and reataurants but this debacle has put us off returning to this venue. They may be able to offer a sandwich in the afternoon but an evening meal needs a little more organising.

There was still no-one sitting there when we left almost an hour later. The following day I took my husband for lunch. It was excellent. I have a perfect Ploughmans lunch complete with delicious home made Scotch egg and my husband haddock and chips and had no complaints!
