Passed by here many times before but as the main part seemed a little run down we hadn't given it a second thought. This time however, We were in need of a break as our journey had been fraught with heavy traffic so we pulled in and were so glad that we did. A very pleasant refreshment stop, with helpful, friendly and smiling staff meant that we stayed a little longer than intended. We shall definitely call in again when travelling this route.

This is a privately owned cafe on the A1 south bound. It's not a chain of money grabbing services. Stopped here for a comfort break and a rest. Needed the facilities and to have a break. Toilets for customers only. Fair enough, I have no argument with that. Why should they provide facilities for free? I asked the waitress if she could make me a double expresso. She said she'd make it when I came back from the loo. Great. She did and brought it over to me. I drink this alot when on a long road trip as it gives me a kick when I am weary and it's not too much liquid so I don't have to stop again in half an hour. I have to say it has to be one of the VERY BEST I have ever had. Absolutely lovely. Thanks so much. Just what I needed. There's a varied menu here, I didn't eat, but it was the friendly helpful staff that really made it stand out. Well done! Very impressed. Would recommend without exception.

This was purely a comfort stop on our way down to the Channel Tunnel. However, the sign on the door said “Toilet for customers only” so I asked the lady behind the counter if I could use the toilet first, before we had a coffee. Not a problem. The place took me back 40 - 50 years when we first started driving around the UK. So after the loo, ordered coffee and a hot chocolate. Hubby decided he’d have a bacon sandwich. I decided I didn’t need one, but once we’d sat down at the clean table, and the bacon roll arrived, I decided I needed one. Best bacon roll we’d had on our month in the UK. The service couldn’t have been better, courteous, nothing too much trouble. The A1 is no longer a favourite, but this place knocks the socks off a motorway service station. Keep up the great work girls.

Spur of the moment but a great find though initially I did wonder judging from the exterior. Pleasant menu - it was like a throw back to the 1980s with 'mother' doing the cooking and somewhat dated furnishings, Nevertheless a pleasant pair of toasted teacakes. I was taken aback by the people sitting on the steps to the entrance puffing away on their ciggys. When I entered the first set of doors a bad smell hit me, that I found very unpleasant. I have to say the staff were nice and directed me to the toilets....well if I thought the cafe smelt awful, the toilets were 100% worse, there was no air circulation and I couldn't get out of there fast enough. Maybe have some windows open in both the restaurant and toilets, that may be a great help.

This is our second stop at DD Services and on both occasions we have been truly impressed. We always stop at the Little Chef on the way North at Doncaster, but DD's beats it on price, quality, service and most of all what we all normally stop for a comfort break. I had the breakfast at both and the taste, quality and quantity at DD's was far superior and at a cost of £2 cheaper. My wife had the chicken salad and she was very pleased with the excellent plate that she was served. The cup of cha was also very good. This used to be a Little Chef, and don't get me wrong little chef are ok but pleased it has some competition. I am not sure if DD's are a large chain or not but they certainly deserve to be supported. There is a sign advertising food. Turned into DDs without a great deal of hope as it looks a bit basic from outside. I'm so glad I stopped. A friendly welcome and an invitation to take a seat; a simple but perfectly adequate menu and only a short wait for my food - and they were quite busy. A proper 'transport cafe' breakfast - and that's a compliment by the way. Freshly cooked, hot, tasty and accompanied by a big mug of decent tea; what more could I ask? Oh, yes - loos, of course. A bit hidden away as other have noted, but spotlessly clean. These people really deserve to succeed - and perhaps thay could give lessons to the 'big boys' in this business and show them how it should be done.

A strange experience as we stopped at this Service Station for the toilet and refreshment. On entering this cafe, as is usual in these circumstaces, the first thing we required was the toilet. We were immediately challenged by one of the two members of staff saying that the toilets were for customers only. We explained that we would be using the restaurant but needed the toilets first. The toilets are deliberately concealed necessitating asking their location although there were numerous signs stating that toilets were for customers only and another saying that it was a private business and not motorway services. We then sat down and we each ordered a drink and soup with a roll. After twenty minutes waiting for the soup we were about to leave as we wanted to get on our way but on asking we were told it was nearly ready. The soup was okay but bearing in mind it was not at all busy the delay was too long for this kind of establishment.Perhaps the problems were understaffing with one person doing the food and the other managing the till while challenging everyone who came in about the toilets.

We'd been driving for a couple of hours and needed somewhere with toilet facilities - if I'm honest we only stopped here because we really couldn't wait any longer. My husband was told that he was welcome to sit at any table and my daughter and I needed to head to the loo immediately. We headed off but had to come back and ask for directions as we could only find the fire escape. It turned out that you needed to go through it to get to the loos! Once found they were very clean and well supplied with loo roll - they certainly rivalled those on offer at busy service stations! When we returned to our table, we discovered that the menu had tempted my husband in to deciding that brunch here would be a good idea! Between us we had scrambled eggs on toast, a breakfast wrap and pancakes with maple syrup. The food was all freshly prepared, served hot and we all agreed that it tasted really good. The prices were reasonable; slightly cheaper than those of the bigger service stations. The lady who served us was friendly and helpful. In short, this place does exactly what you're looking for on a long journey. It's one of those occasions where I wish Trip Advisor ratings weren't such a blunt tool. You're unlikely to come here expecting the best dining experience you've ever had, you're more likely to be looking for 'honest' food, reasonable prices, pleasant staff and decent facilities and it more than adequately provides all of these.

The tables were shabby and I couldn't find one that wasn't covered in bits of food. It now gives the impression of struggling a bit, but the staff are friendly (they even showed us a picture of the original site) and the food is fair enough for a roadside stop. We had soup, which was nice, with croutons and bread (the oven being 'broke'), followed by chicken-and-bacon salad, which was unexceptionable and came with more croutons, plus a rather strange sweet chili dip. This is an okay place to stop southbound on the A1(M). They serve anything from light snacks to full meals. The staff on our previous visits were generally helpful and friendly. Not anymore! they have gone down in our estimation since removing the sign to the toilets. They are obsessed with stopping people as they come in and checking that they will be eating or drinking; if your only requirement is the use of the toilet facilities then you will be turned away. What upset us most was seeing a Lady with a young child being refused access to the toilet. Since the demise of the Little Chefs on this road there are fewer places to stop and they seem much further apart. Travelling long distance especailly with children, the use of toilet facilities is both an essential and normal need. DD's you need to up your game and show some consideration to travellers whether customers or not. These people could be potential future customers but are unlikley to come back or recommend your establishment when they are treated in ths manner.

Travelling down to Leicestershire and needed a late breakfast/lunch to quench hunger.Upon arrival seated immediately by a kind member of staff and seated. We all ordered the "Standard" (English Breakfast) - some with additional sides including fried bread - and food all arrived reasonably quickly and was delicious. However, after a bit of confusion we discovered the path to the toilets was through a door marked "emergency exit" and it appeared we weren't the only ones left confused.Good food, standard service, strange signage.

We weren't expecting much from the rather tatty looking cafe, just a cup of tea and the opportunity to use the bathroom. We'd been driving for a couple of hours and we both needed the loo and we're looking forward to a hot drink, possibly a little snack and a rest from driving. When we asked to use the loo, we were informed rather sharply that the toilets are in the service station. Far enough, maybe they don't have a bathroom. We were just about to head over there, when another customer told us that, in fact, there were bathrooms in the restaurant. They were down an unmarked corridor, behind a door marked "fire exit." So, off we trotted, and just as told they were behind the door marked "fire exit," very clean and well maintained bathrooms... probably in this state through lack of use, I should imagine. When we went to back into the hauntingly empty restaurant, I tried to order a tea and a coffee. Practically the second I approached the counter the woman behind it closed it for the day and redirected me to another counter, at the other end of the restaurant. The coffee order was taken by the rude woman who has the phobia about customers using the bathrooms. It was thrown together with a lot of sighing, tutting and grimacing. Halfway through this ordeal she asked "how many sugars?" which struck me as an odd question. Isn't it normal for customers to add sugar to their own taste these days? I know my wife varies the amount of sugar in her coffee depending on how bad it is. I suspected that she might need more than normal for this attempt. Paying for one tea and one coffee had to take place at another counter, of course... and, they wouldn't take a card payment because the order was under £5. To be fair, she did apologise for the fact that they'd only take cash. Having paid we then spent an amusing five minutes playing "hunt the spoon." There were no tea spoons on any of the tables. Eventually, we had to ask, and they did a quick hunt in the kitchen for a spoon. Good news... they had one. Phew.My wife stirred her coffee, we took our drinks and we left. It's been a long time since I felt so uncomfortable in a place that I wouldn't finish a cup of tea in there, but the place is very, very odd indeed." My only advice to anyone travelling on the A1 near Wentworth is to hold your bladder a few more miles and try somewhere, anywhere else... unless you're a fan of the absurd, in which case I highly recommend the experience. My wife and I are still laughing our collective socks off about this incident. We are both seasoned travellers and have eaten in strange places all over the world. This place, without doubt, has been the rudest and strangest we've ever been to.

Do not be put off by the exterior, this cafe provides simple, good food at a reasonable price. We have stopped here twice for refreshment on our way south from Northumberland. The welcome is friendly and polite, the place is very clean and uncluttered and the food is hot, freshly cooked and tasty. The toilets are well stocked and although not "posh" they smell fresh and are spotlessly clean. It is a pleasure to have a break there. I hope they do well in their venture. We will be stopping there regularly.

We visited here while travelling home from York and the friendly service and quality homestyle cooking makes it a place that we would highly recommend over the normal 'chain' establishments. It seems like a private enterprise and we wholeheartedly hope that it is a successful one.

So this is a pleasant, family-run version. The place is spotlessly clean and well-lit. Tables are comfortably spaced so you don't have to break an ankle trying to stumble round them (you know what it's like when you've just got out of the car). The food is basic 'transport café' grub, all freshly cooked to order. Very hot, well-presented, and most of all, with a smile and offers of 'anything else I can do for you?'. The toilets are fresh-smelling and well-equipped and there are conference and overnight facilities if required. This is a cheerful little establishment supplying a need for the weary traveller. It's not posh but then it doesn't pretend to be. It's not offering haute cuisine but we didn't want that. I would suggest a website might help a little but there's always that danger that if and when a business gets too busy, it loses identity and becomes impersonal and, generally speaking, more expensive. I hope this doesn't happen to this establishment. We will certainly call in again on the long trek between the south Midlands and the Tyne.

I turned in here by mistake, expecting to find myself at the larger place a mile or so down the A1. I liked the warm and friendly welcome, admired the spotless wcs, and I've just polished off a delicious freshly-made toastie and the best coffee I've had next to a major road. It's a bit old-fashioned, which I'm finding a delight after countless impersonal corporate efforts from the major motorway service chains. I'll definitely be coming here again next time I'm heading down the A1, as I particularly like the sound of their Yorkshires and the apple pie. The signs from the road aren't as huge and garish as usual, so be sure to keep an eye out if you choose to try it. They provide wifi, too, so I'm tapping this in as I finish off my cuppa. Well done, DDS and the friendly Ladies who work here.

A welcome change from the ubiquitous big brand services that dominate our highways, DD's Services offer good simple fare at reasonable prices served by friendly and efficient staff. We stopped off en route south from Durham and (whilst the pricing of some of the menu items is a little confusing) we were served freshly made simple food, quickly and with a smile...

DD's have just taken over this cafe. It looks as if it might have been a Little Chef. They are doing a good job, open from 8 am to 8 pm they serve a variety of meals including breakfast. They do full meals, snacks or just a drink. The meals are very well cooked and presented. The staff are friendly and take on board any special requests.

Called in on a long drive back from Newcastle to Norwich. Had a breakfast fry up and was well looked after by the Ladies running the place. Food was good and hot .Needs some signs on the main road to compete with the other cafes on the roadside didn't really know what it was until we looked inside. Perfectly good motorway type cafe with an eighties feel which is friendly and in the line of the old style Little C. Which I always liked. Mach.
