Having booked a 3 day stay in London in the St James location, we were looking online for suitable restaurants in that area and saw some very positive reviews on Trip Advisor for Davy’s. We went this evening and can confirm all the excellent reviews are spot on. From the minute we arrived the service was exceptional. The food was excellent and given its location the pricing is very reasonable indeed. It’s a lively wine bar, so don’t expect a silent table for two, but it has a great vibe. We would wholeheartedly recommend Davy’s to anyone visiting this part of London.

I have been going to this wine bar for a number of years and it has been remiss of me to add a review as it’s our work local and not really occurred to me. But since it was our Christmas party today.. I have to say there is a special quality to this venue in terms of their customer service which you rarely find in central london. All the staff cannot do enough for you and the food never disappoints. But I have to say the big shout out is their bangers and mash which I would go as far to say is the best in SW1. Thanks guys and see you tomorrow! Rob

Delightful old fashioned drinking haunt and eaterie. The food is traditional Davy's fare from a small menu: fish and chips, burgers, sausages etc. The fish and chips were excellent. A wide choice of decent wines, as one would expect. Service prompt if slightly perplexed. Comfortable. Lots of private rooms. Not too expensive. Quite a find.

We dropped in between Christmas and the New Year. This basement winebar is off the beaten track, a five minute walk from St James' Palace, and in late December was empty. But it made a nice quiet spot to have lunch. The menu was limited due to the season and I was a little concerned that we might be getting end of year supplies. Far from it: everything was extremely fresh and of exceptionally high quality. We had a ham sandwich (£7.75) and a beef sandwich (£8). We also had a bowl (described as large but I would have said an average portion) of chips (£6.50). My sandwich was full of beef and with a great kick from the horseraddish - yummy! The chips were also perfectly cooked, with a crispy exterior and extremely fluffy inside. I had a half pint of pale ale (£2.80) and my companion had a small glass of house rioja (£9.30 - which seemed over-priced). The total bill calme to £34.35. So not cheap but reasonable value given the qualifty of the food. The service was friendly and efficient.

I was there for dinner with clients. Our meal was promptly served, but we were not rushed. The house claret (a Sichel) is delicious. After a good meal, the mini-desserts and coffee is an excellent option. My one criticism is that our efficient waitress went off duty at 2100 and the follow-up service deteriorated with us having to ask for everything ourselves. This would have been a five-star rating otherwise. It did not spoil the enjoyment of the evening, and should not be taken out of proportion. Wine bars in the Davy's chain remain my favourite venues in London for meeting friends and colleagues as we never feel rushed.

This interesting pub-turned wine bar is hidden underground near St. James's Square, and from the shabby arcade it looks like nothing at all. In fact, it is quite space, with many rooms for small parties, and great atmosphere. The choice of wines is limited - but they are good quality. The meny is different from the traditional pub - and is actually very tasty.

As you know, we have been lucky in our choices of restaurants and I tend not to write about the few that disappoint. However, Davy's at St James did. We were with a large group, maybe 50, paid £40 a head for a mundane meal of pate, salmon and raspberry mousse - no coffee, down in the unexciting cellar. It was not worth the cost. Their elaborate Christmas menu is £34.95 for a three course meal!!! How come? Maybe you are in the centre of London, and have to pay a high rate for goodness knows what, for the privilege, but your standard is not as good as (for example) The Flintlock in Marsh, Devon, or The Ship Inn, Irvine Scotland. Even more smiles from the staff might have helped. Sorry, we shall not be visiting again.

We were staying around the corner at Dukes, when (after a day of exploring London on foot) we had a craving for burgers and ale. Davy's did not disappoint. First, it was a 2 minute walk and the food and drinks menu were exactly what we wanted. Fries were hot and fresh and they even made onion rings for us! The atmosphere is great; very good vibes with the staff who were helpful in choosing ales. Just what we were looking for after trotting around London for 10 miles. Nice authentic wine bar, not overrun by tourists. Ta!

I was introduced to Davys Wine Bars by a friend some years ago and have been a fan and customer ever since. With colleagues we regularly use the St James location for informal meetings, where possible in one of the private rooms. Recently, we took some Australian visitors who were impressed with the ambience and atmosphere, not to mention the food and drink range. I've also enjoyed similar experience in two other locations, The Crusted Pipe in Covent Garden, very atmospheric and a hugely convenient venue for that area-full of history in its own right, and Champagne Charlies under Charing Cross Station. I must focus on getting to more of their London locations. Sign up for their loyalty programme which eases the financial burden when you buy wine from their excellent range. Never disappointed and thanks to all the staff who put up with us in such friendly fashion.

Stopped for a lunch with client during pre-Christmas season. Been to Davy's multiple times at different locations and it is usually reliable if nothing special. This time it was all wrong. The waitress brought the wrong red wine. When i queried the taste first she said it was the correct one and then when she brought the replacement admitted the wrong wine was brought the first time. The steak was ordered medium rare what came was burnt. The fish and chip was over cooked. Given that i was with a client i did not have the time to get a replacement or make a complaint. I called a few days later to talk to the manager and spoke to a lady who said that she was the manager but the branch manager was on holiday and will call when he gets back from holiday. no one has ever called.

For many years, a group of colleagues and I have been visiting the basement wine bar at Davy's at St.James' after a nearby Christmas lunch. This year we decided to try out their dining as well. We had booked one of their private rooms, which proved both elegant and appropriately festive. We all really appreciated the fact that we could choose from a choice of 4 starters, 4 mains and 4 desserts. Reasonably enough, these had to be pre-ordered, but it enabled some to go for traditional Christmas fare, whilst others chose other options. Whilst others enjoyed their turkey, I had the roasted cod - which was excellent. Indeed, all elements of the meals were considered to be of a very high standard. The wines were, naturally, of a high standard. The service too was friendly and efficient, as was the booking process. All at a reasonable cost. What more could you want? We've already booked again for 2018.

This place is down the most interesting alley, like out of a movie. Even before we got there I liked it! We were there for a birthday party so had a private room which was big enough to move about and visit, and quieter than the pub side was on the last Friday of the month - i.e.- payday. But the pub side seemed like a fun happening type of place too! The service was great, prompt, no problems with having a large order and things getting mixed up. The food was really good and the menu varied from every day typical pub food to some more upscale items. I just wish British Pubs had more British beers. I have no desire to come to the UK and be offered Corona!

We met up yet again in the bowels of St James at Davys. You plunge down the stairs from Crown Passage into a world of tailored suits. I have previously remarked on the atmosphere which is particularly hectic as those from offices around fill the time before their trains take them back out to the suburbs. That's exactly why I'm frequently there! This time we had a couple of glasses of the Zampallar Chilean Reserva Chardonnay (£6.70 for a 175ml glass). This tropical fruit flavoured dry white wine was a little too dry for me but one couldn't fault the quality. Davys do know what they are doing with wine as they are shippers. I had a well constructed Smoked Chicken Caesar Salad with a delicate sauce, hidden anchovies, cheese and croutons (£12.95). Just what I needed before braving South West Trains. I almost certainly will be back quite soon.

We arrived late lunchtime on Friday and only discovered when we were about to order that they had run out of burgers and, allegedly, it was not possible to make any more. By this time we already had ordered our drinks and had arranged for some friends to join us. We did stay for eats and my steak was OK but not great, whereas my partners Caesar salad was blessed with tasteless chicken and, quite oddly, anchovies. Steer clear of the Malbec, it's overpriced and not a good example, the Rioja is much better. Overall a big letdown, we won't be returning any time soon.

I had initially sent this review directly to the manager at Davy's and never received a reply which I feel really goes to show the poor emphasis on providing good customer service! Other colleagues have recently also recounted similar experiences in Davy's. There are plenty of other good dining experiences at a fraction of the cost in St. James's. I would avoid Davy's. Comments as sent to management are below-"Unfortunately our experience at Davy’s was deeply disappointing. We had booked a table months in advance for our Christmas party as we had a pleasant experience last year. Our experience this year was quite the contrary. We were a table of 9 and had pre ordered earlier in the week to be seated at 1:30. We were a running a few minutes late which didn’t seem to matter as there was no one available to seat us anyways. When we were finally seated it took a long time to order and receive our drinks. Around 2:30 a member of staff came to check our pre-orders as one member of our group had to pull out due to illness (we had called in the morning to cancel his order). It was iterated to the waitress at this time that one member of our group would need to leave at 3pm for a meeting. She stated that she would do what she can however we had only booked our table for 1:30. I personally find this statement rather bemusing. As we had booked our table for 1:30 for lunch and pre-ordered all of our food there is no reason that we would not expect to finish eating by 3pm. This however was not the case and as we received our starters just before 3pm my colleague was unable to stay for mains and desserts. The main course was very disappointing when it arrived. The vegetables were a combination of either cold or under cooked or both. The brussel sprouts were essentially inedible as they were so hard and undercooked. The wait staff (who struck me as either completely undertrained or perhaps even temporary staff brought in for the day) appeared rather clueless. They seemed to spend much time wandering aimlessly around the restaurant as opposed to clearing tables or taking orders. This was very noticeable when our mains had arrived and there was no space on the table due to cracker waste etc, but rather than removing the waste they shoved it in the middle of the table and placed the vegetable dishes around it. We finally finished our food around 4:30 pm. As this was a business lunch this completely consumed our afternoon and many colleagues were hoping to return to the office much earlier in the afternoon. This however was not the case.I feel that the whole experience was terribly disappointing and we will definitely not be returning to Davy’s in the future, nor would I recommend it to anyone for an event. I understand that restaurants around Christmas become busy but the restaurant was not full when we arrived, we had preordered our meal and I do not feel that this justifies the poor treatment that we received. I am guessing that for the most part Christmas parties are paid for by corporations and this may mean that people are less likely to complain, however we paid for our lunch out of our pockets and were left feeling very ripped off. I hope that some of this is taken on board and issues with food and service are rectified."

Food was ok services was wanting to say least. Took nearly 20 minutes to get the wine list to The only time we got service was when we went looking for someone to serve us. Whilst I don't mind the occasional 3hr lunch I do object to it when most of the time seemed to be waiting. This probably wasn't the case the delays we had did exacerbate the feeling. As a wine bar the least I would expect is the wine to be poured, we weren't even asked to try it, it was just plonked on the table, had it been house wine maybe, but the second most expensive wine on the list? Countless other disappointments but you get the gist. Maybe it was just a Monday? Either way I wouldn't choose to go there again.

Stopped for a quick bite at lunchtime today. It's a pleasant enough underground wine bar type room, cosy in a polished brass and mahogany way, but modernised so it's not a weird time warp. The wines were very good (as you'd expect) but not cheap. The burger was tasty, I asked for medium and it was delivered a bit on the rarer side than I was expecting (somehow I'd decided to ask for medium half expecting this, as opposed to asking for medium rare, so the end result was what was wanted). But the 'superfood' salad with halloumi was more than a bit dull, it needs a dressing and the halloumi could be better cooked. The Chips were excellent and coffee good.I think the errr 'facilities'? have been remodelled - a good thing!Service was OK - quick enough but a bit impersonal.Overall then, mostly OK, some bits better than others but quite good enough for the money - 'average' is a bit harsh, but the next rating is 'very good' and I don't want to be that strong - good is about right.Mark

The layout of the location was atmospheric but not overpowering; the food was worthy of a 5 star rating alone but what made this so special was the friendly efficient staff, where nothing was too much trouble and their attention to detail was perfection.

My usual meeting place with family when I had finished a regular meeting in London. Since the last visit I have gone low-carb and Davy's can cope. I consumed most of a naked Davy's steak burger which was accompanied by lettuce, beef tomato and house mayonnaise with a market salad (£12.95). There was as expected no toasted brioche bun but there was a generous portion of fries in a bucket - some naughty carbs of which I consumed a small quantity. The burger was good quality and cooked perfectly to taste - medium rare. I wouldn't say it was the largest burger I've ever consumed. Two 125ml glasses of Davy's excellent House Red (you would expect it to excellent knowing Davy's provenance) settled in at £7.50. Like us you will be surrounded by customers in well tailored suits. The vaulted ceiling gives a cellar-like feel and you become oblivious to the world's weather outside. We shall be back.

Good set priced menu - varied choices - excellent food + wine and great service. This is my third visit and I always find the food well presented and tasty

A huge selection of wines from all over the world will go along with a choice between a burger, a sandwich or a main course. But don't worry: they serve great beers and cider too!

We popped in here for an early supper before a prom at the Albert Hall. This was our first visit, although we have visited the Crusting Pipe in Covent Garden many many times. A much better selection of wine by the glass here, and the toilets are much cleaner than the Crusting Pipe!Food was very similar to the Crusting Pipe, and a little cheaper, nothing outstanding, better than pub fare, so all in all, reasonable value for money in this part of town. Great wine!

What a great place. Underground so probably better for winter cosy dining but cool for summer if no view. Attentive service and great food.

To start with the positives: service was very friendly which is always nice and the house wine was good. However, the place is let down by the bland food and lack of ambiance. I visited on a Thursday evening and the restaurant was not busy and had no background music (just the dull tones of the TV - not good). I went for the Aubergine main, which was overlooked and came with (what I believe) was unwashed supermarket rocket. Was left hungry after this and it was £14.

We followed some gentlemen in suits and thought they'd know where to go. They had many nice wines by the glass and we had a table slightly hidden from the vibrant bar. Good? Service was really friendly and alert. Food was great and even seafood pasta that can be risky in a place like this was really good. Bangers and mash was very warm which I love. Tasted so good.

I visited this venue spontaneously, not by recommendation. I was alone, and many who have been a single visitor at a restaurant will be familiar, and resigned to being given the table by the toilets or kitchen or both. Not in this case. There were a couple of groups in just having a nice sociable Friday night so were a little noisy (who can blame them). I was shown to a nice area which was far enough away from the others that I could read in peace. The waiting staff were friendly and very helpful and the food was wonderful - and not excessively expensive. In short I was made to feel an important customer, even though I had a simple meal and a single glass of wine and I have avery enjoyable meal. I will be returning and I have no hesitation in recommending the venue to my colleagues and anyone looking at this review.

Nice place for drinks and off the beaten tourist track. It was very quiet when we visited yesterday late afternoon. The food looked reasonable too but we were there for the excellent wine!

Reserved on a open table meal deal, found a nice menu selection if limited. Service was polite enough. Order taken, aspargus and cod goujons my option - 2 courses £15.95It was all just OK. Not asked if everything was OK although when I highlighted I had the wrong aspargus dish it was replaced after a 10 minute wait whilst my friend ate her starter.Nothing really would urge me to return and I wished I'd kept the wrong aspargus dish!

My friends and I met at Davy's St. James for lunch and had the two-course menu @ £15.95. It was good value for money and they didn't scrimp on the food at that price. Would recommend for a relaxed lunch with friends.

This is down in a basement so if you have difficulty doing stairs then beware but otherwise the place is clean and offers excellent pub grub and beers. Disappointing on the lager. food is good value. Staff are good.

We were a small group of friends who stumbled down the stairs to this place looking for a pub lunch. When we entered it did look more like a restaurant or wine bar, than a pub. However, they had a table for us and we sat down. We ordered their Fish and triple cooked Chips which is one of their classics. That dish was absolutely the best fish and chips we ever have had. A quick lunch suddenly became a meal to admire, we had to order a wine to accompany this superb dish. We definitely can recommend this place, and specially this dish.

This is a great venue if you want to lose weight! The food did turn up eventually after we pointed out the length of time we had been waiting

Terrible service! We waited half an hour for the menu, another almost an hour for the meal and at the end it turned out that there was no coffee because the machine was broken!!!
