Darwin's at The George in Lichfield

The reason this isn't one star is Shona the waitress who deserves better than this graveyard of a restaurant. Food was absolutely the lowest quality stuff I've ever encountered. We ordered steaks that were fatty, tough and terribly cooked (not seasoned, cooked at too low a temperature) the ploughman's sharer is basically stuff from Tesco's warmed up and served with the cheapest sort of bread. We'd have brought it up but frankly it's clear your chef can't do better so what's the point. Oh, we ordered pulled pork that - wasn't. I suspect it was leftovers. Not sure the chef knows what pulled pork is. Another thing while we're at it, the other guy who bought our wine didn't even bother to open it. The place had four tables on a Saturday night, and one of them was complaining about the food to the staff all night. Maybe the reason this is the emptiest restaurant in Lichfield is because it has an old fashioned menu and quality that would shame a Wetherspoons. Will never return .

We came here last night for a friends birthday and we were impressed with the food. We had the Kiev and cottage pie which was homemade and tasted lovely. Our starters were mackerel pate and soup and again these were lovely. It’s pub grub but made well. Service for drinks was a bit slow but the staff were friendly.

I decided to treat us to a carvery for our Sunday lunch. I had seen good reviews about the George so chose to go there. To say we were disappointed is an understatement. The beef was fatty and tough and the vegetables were all mediocre. Really expected better. Have had better at cheaper chain of carvery pubs!

Firstly, the restaurant was far too hot and a number of windows were closed. Even if they are planted shut, get it sorted. It was uncomfortably hot. Secondly, we asked for a wine menu and none was available. Even if they haven’t been printed, hand write some and photocopy them. It’s hard to order a drink when you don’t know what’s on offer and the prices. Thirdly, when we were told about how the carvery works, I asked if there was a child’s option and we were told no. Not a problem as we always have a pot of snacks on us, but couldn’t you offer an under 5s carvery for a discount? There’s no way that we could justify spending an adults’ charge on a one year old’s lunch. Finally, the food. The cabbage was grey from being over boiled and the mashed potatoes had a crust from being left standing. There were also no vegetarian or fish options available on the counter. Fish was available but it had to be cooked separately. By the time my fish arrived, my husband had also almost finished his meal. We were also told that the last table booking was at 3 yet people were still arriving at 3.45. Our server was lovely and very helpful, but feel like we were let down by a few simple things that could have been remedied for an extra special meal. We tried to message the restaurant twice privately but had no reply

Overall this was fine but a couple of little things were annoying i.e. the staff seemed distracted and took ages to serve you or take plates away or get you your bill. The wine is really expensive i.e. £29 per bottle which is crazy. Food was good.

I had cause to complain regarding a a previous Sunday lunch recently so on returning I was pleased to find that the Manager, Simon, had taken my comments on board, i.e. green vegetables are a MUST with Sunday lunch (the previous occasion there had been no green veg available). I was still slightly underwhelmed by the cold starters buffet as this time, no smoked salmon, no pasta or rice salads and the prawns were meagre in their little tin buckets, however, the mains made up for this and the meat and poultry were both delicious, tender and plentiful. We didnt partake of desserts but others looked good. Will definitely be back if the standards are kept high. Thanks.

We were in Lichfield on a Saturday night and could not get a table at our first two choices - even for early evening dining for two peopl (6pm). So I telephoned Darwin's and booked a table without issue. We had a lovely meal in nice quiet surroundings and were served by some very polite and competent young female servers. The food was excellent and very good value. Lovely starters breaded mushroom for Mrs. B and lamb koftas with me, both with garlic mayo and a salad garnish with a gorgeous balsamic dressing. Mains were OUTSTANDING. We both went for the 8 oz ribeye which came with a hot, tasty chips, Portobello mushroom and grilled beefsteak tomato. The steaks were cooked perfectly and were finished with a superb chargrill flavour. Top marks for the supplier and the chef. We had a few beers and a bottle of shiraz and the bill was under £100. Recommended by us.

I had a birthday voucher for afternoon tea, & I really wasnt disappointed. A lovely warm welcome & table all ready for us, Service was excellent as was the afternoon tea, so many cakes we had a box to take the remainder home. I looked at the luch & dinner menu too & looks really inviting. I shall definitely be back

A good value meal in an extremely pleasant ambience. Staff attentive and helpful. Only poor point, real ale is no longer available at the bar although the usual range of keg beer, larger and cider is.

We attended Darwin’s this afternoon for a baby shower afternoon tea for our friend, which we’d booked over two weeks ago. On arrival we found our table, it took another guest in our party to go and find someone to order drinks . We had already been sitting there 40 minutes waiting . They apologised and took our drinks order. 3 lots of afternoon tea were brought out out to the table , beautifully presented and we were explained what were on the sandwiches. The sandwiches were all stale , bread was hard and there was hardly any filling inside them. We complained again and was told the sandwiches would be re made ! While we were waiting the manger came over to the table and asked what had happed , we explained to him that the afternoon had been ruined , he then went on to offer our friend ‘the mum to be’ who is 38 weeks pregnant , a complimentary bottle of Prosecco to have when she got home. This was kindly declined. When the sandwiches were brought out at 4.20pm (we had been at the table since 3.00pm) we had all lost our appetite and the sandwiches on offer were not anywhere near what I’d expect from and afternoon tea - egg , cheese and coronation chicken ! No Turkey like we had been offered in the first instance ! We were offered 20% off the bill , which we debated with the manager and his words were “what do you want” ! Not acceptable when you are not organised for a Pre booked afternoon tea ! I will not be visiting here again . Our friend who organised it was very upset and embarrassed! You need to sort your act out .

We visited the George Hotel today for lunch to celebrate my sister’s birthday. We were extremely disappointed to find that they are now only offering ‘pub grub’ rather than freshly cooked offerings gs befitting a hotel restaurant. Rather expensive pub grub which would be a lot cheaper in an actual pub!! We had to send the chips back as they were almost cold and we were overcharged for one of the drinks my husband had by 50p, the first bottle was £3.70 the 2nd £4.20 for the same beer, same size! The George in Lichfield used to be a beautiful hotel serving first class food. Sadly no more. We will now be looking for somewhere else to dine in Lichfield.

Waitress friendly and helpful. We ordered from the set menu. The food arrived promptly, was well presented and tasty.

Having not seen some of our family for over a year we decided to meet in Lichfield as it was convenient for all of us. As we were staying at the Hotel we chose to eat in the restaurant and were not disappointed. The food was excellent as was the ambience and service from the very helpful staff, my only concern was that the food was served on wooden platters which we didn't really appreciate. The triple cooked chips were fantastic, overall it was a great experience, highly recommended.

We ate here as we made a last minute reservation, and was able to get a table. I have to admit this was not our first choice, however, we were pleasantly surprised. The service from our waitress was faultless, she was very attentive and dealt with a special request from us. The food was above expectations. My partner was initially disappointed with the lack of variety for steak, as only rump was available, however, he was very impressed with it. We learnt that the menu was reduced due to Covid 19 which we understood. I ordered the chicken, with mustard sauce, which came with potatoes, black pudding and chorizo, which was also lovely.My starter was Camembert which was lovely and my partners soup was also delicious. I don’t usually have dessert, but we had cheese cake, and that was also exceptional. The bill at the end of the evening was very reasonable for the quality of food and service that we had, and we would definitely return. For three courses for four people, with alcoholic drinks, the bill came to £120, which we felt was very reasonable at only £30 per person.

Crab cakes starters really nice. Lamb mains very tasty and cheesecake and cheeseboard finished the meal off well. The staff were excellent.

We visited here with another couple, we had previously booked a travelzoo deal in April 2020, due to Covid-19, this was cancelled and rescheduled for October. Lovely ambiance, friendly and courteous staff, a well varied menu finished off a gin & tonic. The food was amazing, and presentation was perfect. Hoping to book again for Christmas as long as the lockdown doesn't stop us.

We ate dinner in Darwin's on the first night of our stay as it was included in our hotel stay.We arrived at the restaurant at our booked time of 6.00pm. Helen our waitress looked after us on arrival taking our drinks order then our food order from a reduced menu due to Covid. Drinks arrived very quickly but for some reason the food took ages. At 6.40pm we still had no food on the table, we told Helen we had a visit booked for 7.30pm and could she find out what the problem with our food was. She advised there was a technical issue in the kitchen but our food would be with us soon. When our starters did arrive at 6.50pm, we asked Helen to ensure our mains were going to be ready for us to allow us to get to our visit at 7.30pm.When our mains did arrive it was very nice, but the very large portions made it impossible to finish our meal for our visit at 7.30pm. We left the restaurant at 7.25pm to walk to our 7.30 visit. Luckily as it's Lichfield our visit was only a 5 minute walk away.We've never had a problem before in Darwin's, food is normally very quick but on this occasion we were let down.We wont let it put us off as everyone has a bad day sometimes.

As a fairly regular diner here at Darwins, this is yet another of my reviews, sorry, hope I don't bore you. Missing one star purely because the menu has been reduced which I totally understand under the Virus circumstances. Went with a friend for a 'Darwin direct voucher for a Starter and Choice of Main menu + gin & tonic'. As the menu is smaller there was only one steak choice which was Rump. Now Rump is good when its good but can be awful if its not. A Sirloin, even if an add-on cost would have been better in my estimation. Anyway no worries, we both had tasty starters, followed by Salmon for my friend which she really enjoyed. I had the faggots (wish they still covered in 'caul') and they were generous and very tasty. Congratulations to the new 'lady' chef, the food was nice and hot beautifully cooked with generous portions and waiting service, delightful. Shall revisit as I like this location.....roll on normality! In fact back next week for plated carvery with my long retired accountant, she deserves a treat and an outing!

We booked a last minute 2 night break. Buy a gift! A warm welcome on arrive, but surprised we were given a room with no windows to open ‍♀️ They Changed it straight away to room 19! Front facing n very spacious. Excellent customer service to solve the problem. Covid secure hand sanitiser stations n a one way system n wear ur masks too. pokSmelt fresh n was spotless. The room was clean. Boyle water n chocolates. We were Facing a bar. We had some noise, but this didn’t bother us. Had a 2 course evening meal, very tasty n home made. None of that frozen stuff lol. Next morning, we didn’t know what to expect. Another warm welcome off the staff. Cereal, fruit juice, yogurts n tea n coffee n not forgetting toast. . Then WOW what a breakfast! All cooked to order n very tasty eggs of your choice. Highly recommended. Staff couldn’t do enough for us. A. Huge thank you to them

Things didn't start well when we arrived on time 7.30 for our evening meal and were kept waiting outside the restaurant for 5 - 10 minutes before anyone approached us. We were taken to our table where we ordered drinks. Apparently we could not see a drinks/wine list because of the current restrictions yet there were two food menus on the table. We were then told that instead of the dinner menu, which I had looked at on the website we had a choice of 4 starters and main courses were to be ordered from the bar menu, which consisted of dishes such as sausage and mash, fish and chips etc. They were also offering two types of steak and gammon to supplement this. This was not what we were expecting. I had booked online and received a confirmation email plus an email reminding me of the booking. This would have been an opportunity to inform us that there would be a restricted menu and then we could have decided if we wanted to go ahead with the booking. The drinks arrived around 7.45. No one came back to take food orders, we waited and waited and at 8.10 I left the table to search for some service. 5 minutes later our order was taken. My husband asked what type of steak was available and the waitress went off to see 'what was left'. We placed our order and the starters, which were both cold dishes, arrived 20 minutes later. As for the main courses, the steak was medium, not rare as requested and the gammon was very dry topped with an over-cooked egg. The triple cooked chips tasted more like oven chips. I would say that I saw only 2 servers and they were doing their best. I have emailed the restaurant with our concerns and received a bland response stating they had 'a one of difficult situation'. I would advise anyone with a booking to maybe check what will be available. We had great meals in Sorriso, Ego and the Larder.

We were staying at the George Hotel and booked for an evening meal at Darwins restaurant, we expected something a bit special and dressed accordingly only to find a reduced lunch time menu akin to a bog standard pub. I had fish and triple fried chips. The fish was in very ordinary batter accompanied with a glut of rustic tasteless potatoe wedges. The menu may have been a result of the current Covid situation in which case I would advise anyone staying at the hotel to eat at one of the many nearby restaurants.

I had booked in March but of course the Covid outbreak meant it had to be rebooked. This was our second visit and if anything better than the first. My husband started with bbq chicken wings which he said were delicious and I had olives with GF bread Then we both had salmon with prawn sauce and it was really tasty. The staff were just the right mix of Friendliness and professionalism which it was a very relaxing meal. Although we had to wait six months for this treat it was worth it and we will definitely return another day. Diane Howard

We had a meal included in our package. We had a 3 course and everything was lovely, so much food and all really tasty. Staff also very friendly and helpful and felt very safe, Covid measures in place were effective.

I have been here twice now and both times the food has been fabulous. The staff and service is excellent. I will definitely be going again and would highly recommend this restaurant.

We visited Darwins last Saturday evening. The whole experience was excellent, the food outstanding and fairly priced. I would thoroughly recommend Darwins at the George without hesitation

A quite peaceful and upmarket ambience on entering the establishment although lacking a little in atmosphere, possibly quiet background music could rectify that. Although not large it was a good selective menu that catered for all tastes including something a little different for those who have a more exploratory palate. The monkfish was excellent as was the more basic but excellently presented and cooked scotch egg for starters. Suitable but concise gin menu and wine list to enhance the food on offer, it created a sense of place and identity for the restaurant.Staff were personable, friendly, thoughtful and attentive but not overbearing. Verbal and body language was positive at all times having an in-depth knowledge of each product they were presenting – excellent and noteworthy.Nice surroundings and well located in the city centre with parking easily accessible. Not somewhere I would usually think to go but very pleasantly surprised and would certainly return and recommend.

We ate at the George hotel on 2 evenings, first evening was from the main menu and on our second evening we ate off the included room offer set menu.Main menu meal,I had Scallops for starter and they were superb, I would say best scallops I have ever tasted, followed by the surf and turf. Lobster was cooked to perfection, and my steak was spot on. My wife had TEXTURES OF BEETROOTRoasted heritage beetroot, golden beetroot fondant, beetroot purée, beetroot crisps, very nice, and for mains she had OVEN ROASTED CORN FED CHICKENSweet potato gnocchi, caramelised carrot purée, roasted heritage carrots, red wine jus. No complaints so it must have been good.Set menu meal.My starter was calamari, it was nice but some pieces were chewy others were great, for my mains we both had the PAN FRIED CHICKEN BREAST with smoked cheese dauphinoise, for big eaters you will need to order a side dish of vegetables off the main menu as the meal was only chicken and potatoes, no veg served with it.For a starter my wife had CHICKEN LIVER PÂTÉ with spiced apple and pear chutney, farmhouse bread, she couldn't eat it all it was very rich, so I had to help her out, it was very nice.

...it was Fillet of Beef AND delicious! Was sent a January email offering a January special of 25% discount off mains. Would not have ordered this normally, too expensive for my budget, but, well, it is January and why not? My friend and I had a sharing Camenbert which we both enjoy, she followed with a Porterhouse which was equally good but somewhat larger than the Fillet. Desserts? Sorry no, too full. Staff delightful as usual. Like this place AND will go again!

Great location but very average food. We had a pre fixe menu, with turkey, stuffing and potatoes. The food was pretty bland, the soup starter was watery and completely tasteless. Very average pub food at an inflated price.

Our Christmas meal with friends and family was absolutely wonderful. Just the right number of options with one fish and one veggie. The service was superb. We were made to feel really special. Dishes were all served promptly but we did not feel rushed. Proper folded linen napkins and crackers made a beautiful table display. Food was also really good. Well done to all. We will definitely go again!

Enthusiastic attentve service provided a tasty well balanced menu and because we were staying at a sister Hotel received a discount on the final bill which also included our guests. Traditonal atmosphere and without fuss and noise which allowed for a calming enjoyable evening.

Lovely meal, and the staff were brilliant, They advised us on the food, wine. If you have the 3 pies, you will need two people. Prices are good too.

This was my first visit. Very nice surroundings. The staff couldn't have been more helpful or accommodating. We swapped things around, added extras etc and they were so helpful and pleasant. Overall the food was really good. One star has been knocked off as I was disappointed with the pork belly. Everything else was excellent, and the rest of my party really enjoyed their meals. I would definitely go back, and would recommend.

The staff were helpful and caring. Service was appropriately timed. The menu was varied and the options were easy to follow. We had a set price 2 course menu which was well priced at £17.50The waitress was unsure what beers were available but found out for us.The food was well presented and the portions were good. Bread was offered.The ambience was pleasant and the room was warm.

We stayed at the George for one night and had dinner at Darwin’s. the food was really good. We ate off the fixed price menu. Really good value for money. I had salmon for mains and it was beautifully cooked.

I need to start this review with a massive thanks to Archie and Lucy for looking after us so well. We came here for our 22nd wedding anniversary. We first found Darwins a few years ago and have been coming ever since. The menu is always innovative and interesting. The food is fresh and very well presented. Also tried the afternoon tea again first class. Can't recomend the place highly enough.

Excellent value for money. Fantastic food, great staff. We really enjoyed our Sunday roast dinner and complimentary tea and coffee.

We were visiting Lichfield today and stumbled over this little gem.

We had the set evening meal which provided us with several choices. We both really enjoyed our meals - really tasty, portion sizes were just right and staff looked after us well without constantly interrupting us to check everything was okay. To be honest, it was a pleasant surprise at just how tasty it was. The dining room itself is really nice too.

We came here for a big family farewell after a wedding.

We had the three course menu for £19.50 each course was delicious and was well presented, staff very friendly.

Recently attended a function here and we were impressed with the food and service from very pleasant staff.

We found the staff very very pleasant, food was only average and rather expensive for the meal we had. Unfortunately we were unlucky and were there while a number of functions were taking place and one was particularly noisey. nothing could be done about that and we did not notice any delay in our meal arriving.

Visited “The George” for dinner and my main course (Indian Chicken) was absolutely superb – although I wish it had been on a plate and not in a bowl (a bowl, really!!!). Well cooked, nicely presented, and a reasonable quantity. My colleague had the Gammon and he genuinely couldn’t finish the whole steak because there was actually too much (amazing for him, believe me) – again nicely presented. Both meals were hot – and I mean hot, which is often a surprise. I would definitely return for luncheon.

Went to see a Robbie Williams tribute night put on at the Cathedral Hotel which included a meal. The tribute artist was Mike Andrew and he was very good, very accurately portraying Robbie and very good with the audience. There were about 8 tables of 7 people so a good crowd and all well behaved and just enjoying themselves. The food was okay and served in a buffet style but it was not the main reason for going so was good enough. The staff were all friendly and helpful and the female compare did a good job of entertaining people with the DJ set afterwards. We did not stay over at the hotel but it was an enjoyable evening.

When the waiter came over for our order he informed us that the fryer wes not working but there was an alternative of mash potatoes new potatoes or jacket

My family and I felt special by all the staff at this restaurant today for my Fathers Day meal . Helen , Mark, bar staff and the chef JC simply couldn’t do enough for us today. Service was swift, staff were all courteous and the food was fantastic. The carvery food was all cooked perfect ,tasted beautiful, great choice of horsd’oeuvlres and I had a nip tray of three lovely Theakstones ales whist my wife had gin of the month. Helen the Manager was great with my Daughter and sorted a different meal out for her . What a fantastic dining experience .

My husband and I went for a meal yesterday evening with 2 of this work colleagues; We all had a difference main meal, which was good; only we had to wait a long time for it to arrive; we also had to wait a long time for our desserts. The staff seem very inexperience. It is a nice venue, but lacked good service.

We have been to the Darwin’s many times and never had a bad meal. Mark the restaurant manager is very professional and friendly. We usually use the £29 for two offer which is excellent value. However I must say the starters have decreased in size so much that we now have a dessert instead.

At hotel,our upgrade breakfast and meal could not be found,20 mins found. Disabled in room 41.v poor

we visited with friends to use a voucher - £29 for two people including a glass of Prosecco and thought it was really good value for money. The bar area has an excellent stock of gins and definitely worth a visit before you venture into the restaurant. The restaurant is lovely and you don’t feel crowded, there is plenty of room between the tables. The staff are very pleasant and helpful. We all had mains and deserts. Mains were great, beautifully presented. The deserts were enjoyable but the only critisicm was that the shortcake base on the Lemon Secret was too crispy and it flew off the plate when we tried to break into it. The others were delicious and we would definitely go back there.

We visited on 18th May and had a drink in the bar,where they have an excellent gin and tonic selection. When we went to our table we were provided with a menu a specials list and a wine list. For starters we both had the scallop with chorizo and black pudding which was diced. The taste was great and was a really enjoyable starter.For mains my partner had the beef and ale pie with mash and I had the rump steak medium.Both were excellently prepared and both tasted wonderful. The pie was exceptionally good and I was glad my partner could not finish it all so I could have a taste, infact it was that good that I wish I had chosen it. We never had room for dessert,however looking around at other tables they also looked nice. Overall a great meal in nice settings and what is really nice is the fact that the tables are not on top of each other.

First visit to Darwin,s and the staff were really nice, friendly and professional. My main course of steak and ale pie was absolutely delicious. I was just disappointed with my starter and dessert. I chose the soup which was butternut squash and it tasted bland. I know that it's a vegetable that's needs a lot of help in the taste department, but this time the chef didn't get it quite right. My dessert was called honey and almond cup but when it arrived it was just 3 scoops of ice cream with honey and almonds or broken biscuit on. I would return but would make better choices.

We have eaten at Darwin’s on a number of occasions. We are never disappointed either with the food or service. Lovely choices on the menu, cooked and served really well. Great choice of wines and gins !

Visited Darwin's last Friday evening for our wedding anniversary meal. From start to finish - what a brilliant experience! The staff (restaurant manager Mark, & also Sid) were so welcoming, friendly & efficient. The setting was pleasant & the food was excellent. As a special surprise, we were presented with a lovely complementary dessert!

We used a Groupon voucher for a 2 course meal and glass of Prosecco and we were not disappointed! The quality of the food and presentation of it was lovely. We found the staff most helpful and had wonderful service throughout.

Have visited here a few times and never leave disappointed. Our waiter Phil was really nice and friendly nothing was too much trouble. The food was lovely plenty of choices and each course was delicious. Really lovely restaurant with lovely staff, will definitely return again

Visited for a meal for our 25th wedding anniversary. This was our first visit & we chose it based on reviews. We made an excellent choice! Everything was fabulous - food superb, staff friendly & attentive. Following our meal we were given a beautiful complimentary dessert with 'Happy 25th Anniversary' written in icing - a really lovely touch! We will return here & would happily recommend

Whilst out in Lichfield dropped into The George Hotel. In the middle of Sunday lunch, plenty of parking, pleasant surroundings and a very nice welcome from the host. Drinks offered and taken as well a couldn't do enough attitude from all of the staff. The meal was very nice. Very relaxed afternoon followed with coffee in the soft seating afterwards. A nice homely feel to it throughout our afternoon at The George. And the value is excellent. Thank you and we will see you again.

Went with friends as a party of four and used a Groupon ticket on a Friday evening. The food and service was good and the staff friendly. Decor and ambiance was pleasant and as to be expected for a hotel restaurant. The gin cocktails were very good with a wide choice and distinct flavours.

We went for a 2 course meal and Speciality Gin using a Travelzoo voucher. The meal choice was good and served efficiently. Good selection of Gins with Fevertree tonics. Will definitely go back again.

This is the second time we've been to Darwin's and have found the food, and especially the service, to be first rate.

Delighted with everything about our first visit to Darwin's. The hotel and restaurant are lovely, the service was excellent, and the food delicious. Despite (?) dining on a Groupon voucher we had access to the entire menu, even the steaks now being included at no additional cost. My one minor criticism was that as someone who doesn't drink alcohol, it was a little surprising that I couldn't have a glass of mineral water instead. Mustn't grumble though, I changed it for a glass of Coke and as I've said, it was a superb meal and a nice night out. On leaving we were handed a return voucher (same terms) and we definitely intend using it. Nice bonus.

We had a delicious meal here, scallops, black pudding and Chorizo to start, sea bass for main and cheese and biscuits to follow. All were really good. There was a great selection of gins. The staff we're all lovely too. Looking forward to returning. I would definitely recommend a meal here.

At the risk of being boring....Darwin's is still a local favourite. Both quality AND service are very good in my experience. Value is good and this time I enjoyed a rather delicious rump steak. When rump is good it is a real treat as the cut is probably the tastiest of steaks. IT WAS A GOOD ONE! Too big so doggie bagged for one very lucky pooch. PS: if Ur a gin lover, their range is extensive. Sadly lost on me as a lover of malt or prosecco, but my friend adores gin, so paradise for her!

Went here as a couple on a Friday night. Wasn’t overly busy. The bar area was busier. Service was however excellent. We left about 9 and it was virtually empty so was lacking in atmosphere. Food though was lovely and well presented although the menu was limited in choice. Decor a bit dated but when we stopped briefly in the bar area coming out the ambience was good and very homely.

We went on a busy Friday evening and had a delicious meal with excellent service. The menu has plenty of choice and has changed since our last visit. I had the scallop and black pudding starter which was attractively presented and tasted delicious. My husband had the ham and apricot terrine which was also well presented and equally delicious. For mains, I had the sea bream with lemon new potatoes and spinach velouté, and my husband had a generous portion of the steak and Darwin’s ale pie. The service was friendly and attentive and one of the staff even found time to level our table which was slightly uneven on the floor!

We have dined here once before and returned using a Two Course Groupon Voucher. The menu has a good selection of British classics. Service was brisk and food generally good quality. Only criticisms were that the tables are a bit on top of each other and that the starters were unnecessarily served on a slate and piece of wood. Fortunately the main courses arrived on traditional plates. Despite this Darwin’s is worth a visit for an early supper.

Another successful evening meal at Darwin's. A new menu, very good, super starter of seared scallop and black pudding. Could have eaten it twice. The chicken wings were also good. Lamb was excellent as well. Darwin's ale was super. Nice, friendly and efficient staff on a busy night. Thanks again.

loved the hotel. Breakfast was excellent. Dinner was very good. Pleasant and helpful staff. Resturants near by and easily occupied the days in Lichfield . Wonderful place to visit. Would always want to stay at the George.

Pleasant waitress service and nicely presented in a friendly atmosphere but a tad expensive. Excellent Salmon special and chocolate sweet.

Very pleasant and helpful staff complemented a very good meal which, because of the three course for one price deal was very good value. Enjoyed the wine and the ambience very much. Will be going soon again.

I visited last weekend, and the meal was excellent, as was the service from William. The gin & tonic was good too! All round a great place to go.

The food and service at Darwins are always first class as they were last night. We went for the set price menu. 3 courses for just under £20 is fantastic value. We also ordered 2 side dishes. The sides however didn't appear. We finally got them when we were about two thirds through the meal. The waiter was very apologetic and said he would only charge us for one of them. At the end of the meal, which was very satisfactory, we asked for the bill. When it arrived we had been charged for the set price for 3 courses but then the puddings had been added as were both of the side dishes. We pointed the error out to the waitress who bought us a revised bill minus the extra puddings but with both sides still showing. We couldn't be bothered to have it changed again so we paid and left. Errors do happen and they were put right but always pays to check your bill.

Nice atmosphere, friendly staff, very good quality of food. Price range between £10-£30 highly recommended for all.

my wife and I visited this restaurant last week. The staff were extremely friendly an helpful and made us feel special.

Visiting with friends this evening, our enjoyment was every bit as good as previously experienced. The food was top class (the salmon was cooked to perfection, as was everything else), the service attentive without being intrusive and the atmosphere calm and welcoming. The staff are all lovely and nothing is too much trouble. Thanks to all concerned. We will definitely return soon.

My in-laws bought us a groupon 2 course meal inc prosecco and it was fantastic, the assistant manager Helen was so friendly and took us to our seats and sorted everything out, nothing was too much for her, commentary bread rolls lovely and then starters and the sirloin steak cooked to perfection, as we was leaving Helen said she had got an anniversary gift for us and bought a dessert out with happy anniversary put on the plate for us with chocolate mousse,what a lovely touch, would def come here again as food and service 100%

We visited Darwins and were made to feel welcome from the moment we entered the restaurant. The food was good quality and tasty and well presented.

Excellent service and food of better quality of other restaurants in area which charge far more for the dishes. Very much worth a visit

On a cold winter's evening in January we first had drinks in the bar; they have an extensive range of drinks particularly of gins! Then we had dinner which we found delicious and reasonably priced. I particularly loved the orange cheesecake type tart with ginger ice cream, yummy The staff were efficient and warm, and the atmosphere welcoming.

Once again we met friends here on a wintry Monday evening. Unlike our previous visit (a Saturday evening) the restaurant was relatively quiet and we could enjoy our own company in pleasant surroundings. While it is conveniently positioned for us, the Groupon deal at Darwin's continues to please and certainly makes it our favourite place of the moment.

We visited this evening for the first time, lovely relaxed atmosphere, very nice, helpful and friendly staff. Food was delicious,I opted for the lamb, melted in my mouth, partner had sirloin and said the same. Good selection and good price, we shall return.

A good menu at reasonable prices. Staff couldn’t do enough for you. The food was well presented and tasty and the portions were adequate. A good choice of wines too.

this is a pleasant , newly improved restaurant in the heart of lovely Lichfield. The restaurant was chilly and some of the food we wanted - chicken with panko crumb was not available so some of our group were later in eating than the others - such a shame.The rest was okay but on such a busy day before Christmas perhaps allowances needed to be made.

This is a most enjoyable place to go for a meal. The service was quick and friendly, we were sat at a satisfying table. The service was so quick we did not have to wait long in between our courses. The food was cooked to perfection. The one and only gripe, but partly my fault that I didn’t ask was the knives to cut the food were so blunt especially trying to cut my crisp belly pork.

We stayed at the hotel. The restaurant was excellent and the service, food and presentation was excellent. The staff treated you like you were the only people in the restaurant. I would recommend it whether you were staying at the hotel or visiting the restaurant as a non-resident.
