While the drinks here are a little expensive, I remember the staff being very friendly - the place itself has a beautiful setting and is a perfect place to visit on a sunny day

Maybe 5 or 6 times a year we have friends visit and walk the Tennyson trail and call at this delightful cafe which is much bigger than the type of cafe you often find here on the island. We always have a cuppa, cake or lunch as it's perfect being half way round the walk. We called in, took our boots off to join the cafe customers but discovered it was closed - fair enough and no problem. There were signs outside we had missed so not the cafes fault we missed them. Having 'held on' to get to our destination I was bursting to use the wc which was 6 steps from the front door and I rather took it for granted that given we had 2 pensioners with us that this was an easy ask. We were denied use which was 'only for residents of the hotel' and told to use the public loos (not far at all - but when you think you have a loo within striking distance the discomfort was awful). This was well within the gift of the member of staff and a real act of unkindness. Shame on you.

Overall the visit was very disappointing. The homemade Hummus was totally bland and had the taste and texture of unseasoned lukewarm mashed potato. The toasted teacake arrived on a hot slab of slate with the result that the pat of butter was reduced to a pool of oil. It was not cheap and the room lacked any sort of atmosphere and we could have been eating in a work's canteen except the food would have been superior. The one and only redeeming feature was the view from the window but even that was not worth the visit.

I was pleasantly surprised by the dandelion cafe. The service was really quick, despite it being busy. The views across the bay are amazing. The food presentation is excellent. The only fault I can think of is that they have the horrible little sachets of condiments. Bottles or dishes would be much more in keeping with the rest of the beautiful presentation of table cloths etc. I will definitely go again.

Always a favourite place to go when on the Isle of Wight - high on a cliff with garden and beautiful views of the chalk cliffs at Freshwater Bay. Sit inside or outside - we had fish and chips (with a dog on a lead) outside. Our fish and chips were not greasy and the batter was thin and crunchy - yummy! After a stroll down along the front wave watching - ideal for a summer afternoon.

Was looking forwards to our visit back here as a previous visit for snacks was really enjoyable. Lovely sunny Sunday, so we planned to sit outside. However, all the tables on the grass were taken (only about 6 I think) and the tables poolside were for Hotel Residents only. So we sat inside in the restaurant, which was fine, but we wanted to sit outside and we were too hungry to drive off somewhere else! Hope you enjoy my photo of poolside tables . . . as you can see they were packed the whole time we were there. . . . So my advice if you want to guarantee eating al fresco, this is not the place to go. On the plus side our food was good, hubbie had ham, egg and chips, which when it was served was ham, eggs, chips and salad. He doesn't eat salad so a bit of a waste. He was pleased with his meal though, all very fresh and tasty. I ordered cajun chicken with salad and coleslaw, again all well cooked and fresh salad, but it turned up in a bowl and I am a clumsy person, so nearly lost the lot in my lap when trying to cut chicken piece in half. I should've asked for a plate I suppose. But really if they are serving food which needs to be cut up, they should be serving it on a plate. Table was laid up with proper linen which makes a nice change these days, shame our view out of the window was of all the empty tables by the pool. So lovely food, but won't go back as when its a nice day we want to sit outside, you get precious little enough chance of that in this country, especially when working full time and keeping fingers crossed weather might be nice on your weekend!

Walk to the far right of the prom at Freshwater bay and follow the signs up the path to this clifftop gem. It's part of A hotel that does walking holidays, so it's only open when the guests are all out walking but they still wouldnt let us sit on the terrace! We only had tea and scones but these came up on a slate with much ceremony. No complaints on quality or price. Good toilets.

While visiting a friend, she took me to lunch here. She had tried to book a table, but was told they don't take bookings. Imagine her annoyance when we arrived to find 2 tables reserved. The only table free had not been cleared and we had to request that it was cleared. This took 10 minutes to happen. We then had to request a clean table cloth and I had to sweep crumbs off my chair. We ordered food and drinks easily enough. Our drinks never arrived. The food was okay, nothing special. When I went to order desert, I waited 12 minutes as the till was being slow and there was a large queue of people waiting. I also pointed out that our drinks hadn't arrived. My friend thought I had left the country, it took so long!Drinks then arrived - twice. Desert arrived - no cutlery. We had to request some. They were not full, but obviously the staff couldn't cope with the people they had.Stunning location, not sure I would have lunch there again.

Fabulous find. The cafe has a lovely varied menu for Everyone, including coeliacs and lactose intolerant diets. Lovely outside seating and view of The Bay. Good prices and choices and smiley staff. Dog friendly in some rooms of the hotel, which is lovely on a wet or cool day, although not in the actual cafe, which is understandable.(Not everyone wants dogs around when they eat!) Water and doggy snack supplied which is a lovely touch! Will definitely be returning here.

We called in for lunch on a fabulous sunny day. I was unaware of any issues with regard to sitting outside until I read other reviews. There are only a few tables on the lawned area overlooking the picturesque bay which was rather strange. Surely most people would choose to sit outside and admire the view - especially if they have dogs with them. There were no tables free so we sat on a bench and ordered paninis. We were advised we had only just made it as they were due to stop serving. The food was reasonably priced and brought to us by a very friendly waiter who even fetched us a water bowl for the dogs when asked. I think the hotel could make much more of what they have on offer and it would be a good idea to advertise opening/closing times on the board at the bottom of the steps to save customers a wasted journey.

The Dandelion serves top class meals, not just café fare. It is excellent, reasonably priced and has a menu put together with flair and thought. We liked it a lot.We were on a busy, business trip to the Island and ended up in Freshwater, where there seemed to be nowhere much to get a meal. We were directed up a driveway to a large building with a restaurant on the ground floor. This was The Dandelion and the fact that it was full told a story. People like it. We wanted a cooked meal so looked on the specials board, choosing homemade beef chilli with nachos, melted cheese etc, at £9.50, and battered cod with chips and peas at £8.45. These dishes don’t sound too exciting, but it’s the ingredients and the culinary skills that made this meal special. My wife makes first class chilli but this was filled with unusual ingredients that made it different and delightful. She is turn said the cod and chips was first-class.One great discovery was the Fusion fruit drinks, far and away the best we have tasted. We had apple and mango and apple and raspberry, both delightful and made by Frobishers Juices Ltd. 6a Cranmere Court, Matford Business Park, Exeter, Devon. Hint: can other cafes please start stocking these unusual drinks? They are far better than mass produced alternatives.Delighted with our first courses we followed up with deserts of apple crumble and custard and flapjack. Again, don’t be fooled. These were way above average. Dandelion’s cooks know their trade. The flapjack lasted me for a further snack the next day and was packed with good ingredients. This café is in an interesting clifftop location and the menu is accredited by Coeliac UK and caters for most dietary needs. I keep the carbs down so had a great burger but without chips and buns. It still filled me up!Not a lot of Island cafes would offer light bites featuring offers like a carmelised goats cheese and red onion tartlet with side salad, or a Mozzarella and Blush Tomato sandwich/Panini with Parma Ham.Despite the flair that goes into all dishes The Dandelion provides staples like a tradition full English breakfast until midday for £6.95. All food is cooked to order - this is not assembly line fast food.We paid a total of about £28 and were pleased with the quality, value and all round good service. It’s worth going right to the end of the Island to call in at this café, which is far more than it sounds!

I don't understand why locals (who will support you year round given the chance) can't sit outside to eat lunch. All the tables from the lawn area overlooking the stunning bay have been removed. Staff told me it has been like this all year but I have a photo of sitting at a table eating lunch outside taken in April this year. Had my friend and I not been too embarrassed to leave we would have walked to Dimbola up the road and enjoyed lunch outside on the hottest day of the year so far. I have racked my brains all day to think why outdoor lunching is not allowed anymore? However we had a nice lunch, a giggle at the duck in the pool and something to ponder over

The location is excellent, with greats view of the south coast of the island. In my experience, the staff have no idea regarding the menu. One of the specials was bubble salmon, so I asked what it entailed. I was advised it was steamed salmon.Well I received salmon fingers covered in rice krispies and fried. Grossly over cooked. It appears to be a restaurant, but you have to order meals and drinks at the bar. The staff only deliver meals to the table. Lady behind the bar wasn't overly concerned about service, as everything happened on her time. When paying the bill she made great effort to point out the tip jar. Went here for a coffee when visiting Freshwater bay last Sunday. The café sits next to the swimming pool of a local hotel and has great views over the bay and sits in the sunshine. Coffee was decent however the woman serving was rude and ignorant, selling people drinks etc and then finding out if they were a hotel resident- only to tell them if they weren't that they couldn't sit outside in the sun as this seating was for hotel guests only. It wouldn't be so bad if there was a shortage of seats- when we were there no seats at all were occupied and I just saw lots of people complaining and walking out in disgust. If you are going to site a café in this location as it is, advertise it in the bay as you do- then you have to provide outside seating - at the moment you are enticing people up the hill under false pretences and then upsetting them - why would you want to do that?

4 friends and I decided to go for lunch and as I only moved to Freshwater 9 months ago I had yet to try this place- so we decided to go here. The positive: friendly staff, clean everywhere and a great view. The negative: waitress walking around looking lost with plates in her hands on several occasions and taking to wrong tables...perhaps she was new. No one asked if we had enjoyed our meal...but guess it is a café rather than a restaurant so perhaps you don't do it then? the fish had been too deeply fried and the batter was very dark brown and hard- we informed the lady clearing our tables- who replied due to H&S food has to be cooked to a specific temperature which probably makes the batter harder. I would have loved to have heard a little bit of light back ground music to add some atmosphere. I shall return with my family to try it again.

The cafe is run by HF Holidays who own the hotel. It could make more of its superb location overlooking Freshwater Bay but they do seem to want to confine non residents to the inside of the building. Presentation is good but service a little haphazard and could be a bit more friendly. We chose jacket potatoes and a pot of tea each, with a good variety of teas to choose from. There's a menu especially for children, and a long list of sandwiches, cakes, salads lunches and more.Sadly our jacket potatoes were rather tired, and the texture was too firm, Although they obviously had been baked in an oven. Ordered the soup which was on the chalk board, and a bottle of water. I sat at a table, and the water arrived fairly quickly but the soup took a good 15 minutes to arrive. The soup was nice, but 15 minutes for a bowl of soup? There were only around 6 other people in the café at the time so they were not busy. We stopped off here at teatime for a coffee and a cake while waiting to meet up with friends and had a very pleasant time sitting outside in the sun enjoying the view of the sea and the grounds which surround this place which dates back to the 1790s. I had a toasted teacake with fresh banana and (home-made?) jam, and this came served on an old chipped grey slate with white dust (actually icing sugar) sprinkled all over it. This method of presentation is getting a bit 'old hat' now and I prefer just an ordinary plate. My latte was lovely but where was the HANDLE of my cup? Well of course there wasn't one, so I had to wait quite a while while the thing cooled down. But . . . . having moaned at this, it was all very delicious indeed and a great combination of tastes. Since our last visit the cafe has now changed to paying when ordering at the till like most other eateries on the Island. Good idea as it stops having to wait to pay when you leave but can see at busy times another till area would be needed to avoid delays. My dad had the burger with crispy bacon which is how he likes it! Overall a nice meal at a reasonable price. Didn't seem to be any sushi teas available which is a shameI would rate Dandelion as "good" but unfortunately Trip advisor only let you choose from average or very good.I think a website would be useful so you could check if they are open as on three recent occasions we have travelled from Ventnor and it has closed early or not been open.

Was drawn to Dandelion Cafe by the roadside board and loved the location on a sunny day overlooking Freshwater Bay. My first choice of Freshwater Bay crab salad was unavailable so I went for a ploughmans and my partner the burger with stilton and bacon, salad and chips. Generous portions of cheeses and ham but overall it was nothing special and the bread uninteresting. My partner's burger was okay, in a white bap rather than in a nice grilled burger bun. Bacon a bit overdone. Chips nice and chunky but overall the meal was nothing special. I would go back to have a coffee/tea but not a meal. The other thing I noticed is that the waiter bringing food out did not clear any plates away. Give it a try, worth it for the view and you may find the food to your taste. It just lacked a feeling of quality.

A nostalgic visit to Freshwater Bay that found us along the beach and a sign for 'Dandelion Cafe'. The food was delicious - scones and trimmings and a tea and coffee. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The surroundings were restful and peaceful.

Real nice place to eat, the views are awesome,\Ive noticed along the whole island that its all service at the til, No one will come to you, no one will tell you, after waiting a while we went indoors, very nice but dated restaurant , ordered then went back outside,, waited for meals which came in dribs and drabs, the coffee forgotten so had to go back in again, food was good service with a smile, overpriced , your paying for the view, dread to think what the service would be like in the summer,

Came 2 years ago and loved it but our experience was different this time. We walked in and was told we were unable to sit inside or on the patio by the poop even though no one was sitting there we had to sit on the grass and eat our food as there were no tables . The service was slow as we got the wrong food given to us but other wise the food was good. I'm open for questions.

Just back from a weekend on the IoW. We were recommended the Dandelion Cafe by a few locals we bumped in to the previous evening.Wonderful views and lush greenery. There is a small bar inside, which I was not able to order from. I was asked to walk around the other side and join the queue...the general theme is to order and they bring your drinks/food out to your table. As I only ordered two drinks I asked to wait for them. The staff seemed quite overworked and stressed out but it wasn't overly busy. There were plenty of tables outside but there seemed to be a lack of chairs.I would visit again for a drink and enjoy the view.

Bank holiday Monday, group of seven of us called for coffee break. Waited patiently to be served, only 3 other tables occupied, but after a while had to ask if it was 'self service' ! Cappuccinos were simply black coffee with 'squirty' cream on top! Served in 'trendy' mugs which had no handles, not easy as coffee was at least hot! Staff friendly enough, but lacked enthusiasm. Brilliant location with lovely sea views.

Two years ago this place was fantastic - food, cleanliness, service all brilliant. However this year the table cloths had stains on them, sorry but the waitress and waiter looked scruffy although the waitress was very friendly. Only had a cream tea, presentation was good but the scone seemed stale. Such a shame, the views are brilliant down to the bay and the cafe should be run with more enthusiasm to please customers with clean tables for a start.

Not good sandwiches , fairly slow and overpriced, very nice setting in the garden overlooking the sea but thankfully didn't have to eat inside where it felt very old fashioned

The four of us parked nearby and walked along the coast and ended up in this garden area which is part of a hotel. There was a sign up saying Dandelion Café so we sat down and waited. After sometime we realised you had to go inside to place your order and subsequently we joined a slow moving queue to put in our order and pay accordingly. We then sat outside in the sunshine and had nearly forgotten all about our order when suddenly it arrived. One cake and four coffee's which all went down very well. There are numerous tables and chairs outside but be prepared for slow service.

Waited about 45 mins for our food which was a shame as the setting is really nice but is let down by poor service, my sister was given a packet of butter for her bread that had already been used! The food was average for the amount of time we had to wait for it

Very busy on a bright fresh (excuse the pun) Sunday morning. Wonderful views over the sea from the restaurant. Service prompt and cheerful, teas and buns very tasty. Sunday lunch on a sunny day would be a great venue.

Stumbled upon this hotel/cafe whilst looking for somewhere dog friendly for brunch for our party of four. Very friendly lady helped recommend items and was very patient whilst we went to and fro deciding what to choose. Wonderful cooked breakfast with a choice of additions/ ommisions, lots of varieties of tea and an interesting take on toasted tea cakes - served with strawberries, raspberry jam and bananas. After initial hesitation we tried the full combination which was loved by everyone. Wonderful sunny spring day and we sat outside on the lawn overlooking freshwater bay - stunning scenery.

We thought we'd pop in for a bite to eat while out on a walk. The waitress ignored us until I asked if we could choose a table, then she said yes and she would come over. There was only one other table occupied and she spent the next 20 minutes walking backwards and forwards to them while blanking us. Sorry, can't review the food as we gave it another 5 minutes and left. Shame really because the views are lovely.

We only had a light bite, the food was plentiful although the service was very slow and only a few customers in the cafe at the time. That will be our one and only visit as it was not until after we had ordered we noticed the recent stains on the table cloth.

After a quick Christmas Day walk we thought we'd pop in to Dandelion Cafe for a quick coffee. After chatting to the three staff behind the counter to check it was ok to grab a quick coffee, they told us to take a seat and they'd be over to take our order. It was super quiet, one family was just leaving and only one other couple in there. After 15-20 minutes sitting around and having no-one come over to take out order, we finally gave up. We honestly wouldn't have minded slow service if the cafe was thriving and busy, but the fact there was almost the same amount of staff as customers made it a pretty poor show. Now off to Yarmouth to give our custom elsewhere.

I visited the dandelion Café over the last few years and in 2014 the menu and staff were excellent . Unfortunately 2015 has been a complete disaster with all the main serving staff leaving and the replacement serve not very good ( this could be down to a lack of training ) . Basic hygiene and health and safety standards were simply not met on a number of occasions and staff seemed to know but feel they were not in a position to correct , the whole cafe seemed to lack any leadership . Lets hope 2016 is better as it couldn't be any worse . PS the Piano Café up the road is excellent .

As it was a lovely day we decided to go for a short walk and have a coffee instead of or usual just up the road at The Piano as the views are great from the Dandelion cafe. However we wished we hadn't bothered as we were greeted by a rude counter assistant who abruptly answered every query in a negative way. However the straw that broke the camel's back was when I was told that I couldn't have any drinks or anything on a plate as we were sat near the children's playground!! This was the only table left in the sun and absolutely no children on the play area. We were told it was due to H&S! We then walked up to The Piano again and were greeted warmly and we were allowed hot drinks and food outside.surrounded by children. Don't bother just look at the view!

What a lovely little find. Popped in having followed the signs from the car park on the main road. Shown to a cosy table with beautiful views of the bay. Order came up beautifully presented, quick and very reasonably priced. One tip - get cups with handles! Hot tea/coffee difficult to pick up in the palm of your hands! Would I return? Of course, returned twice in a weekend! Now which way to Slimming World?

Two years ago this cafe had been very enjoyable, but this visit was awful. The "Ploughman's" salad consisted of two stale rolls, a dollop of pickle from a jar, a limp "salad", and two lumps of cheese. All for the princely sum of £6.50.Having gnawed through one roll I returned the meals and complained. The manager maintained the rolls were still fresh, despite the rock hard crust and dry stale taste."It's still soft inside!" was his response but to assuage my disappointment he was prepared to offer a risible 10% discount on their cost - a less than impressive £1.30. We turned this down.

The cafe overlooks Freshwater Bay, and is attached to Freshwater Bay House. It has an extensive car park. There are lovely cakes available for a snack - very naughty, but very nice. The staff are very helpful and pleasant. We left a pair of prescription sun glasses at about noon one day and recovered them from the helpful staff at 10:30 the next morning. Nice selection of drinks available as well. Lots of outside grassy area for you to sit in fine weather and for the children to play.

We stopped here for brunch and sat in the grounds overlooking freshwater bay. I cannot fault the customer service and the friendliness of the staff. We ordered 2 paninis, tea for 2, a large cookie and apple juice and it came to £16.00. It was brought to the table, was hot and considerable in size and very fresh salad side.. The waiter also brought out four dog treats for the pooches... Thanks. What a delight.

It's very busy in the summer season, but it still manages to produce great food. In the winter, it's the one pub that is consistently open, no matter what the weather or footfall. Throughout the winter, there are special deals on meals, which are cooked to a very high standard. The staff are really friendly and helpful and if you want any changes to your meal, they are only too willing to help. If you come to Yarmouth pop in, you will be looked after and enjoy a lovely meal and beverage of your choice. The location is great, but the phone signal is very poor. You may have to walk up the peir.

We had a poor dining experience, one meal in particular, the stir fry chicken was very strange with slices of raw tomato and bottled silverside onions. The other meals were indifferent, chips not really hot, a real bugbear with me as it's something that's so easy to get right. They close tomorrow until March so were obviously just not that bothered and keen to get off home. It's a shame as it's an attractive venue with live music and a real nautical vibe.
