Date: 17th August 2024 Cost: £350 inc wine and cocktails for four Another restaurant review, another reminder of my administrative deficiencies. Tonight it was to the Grand, where I’d blotted my previously perfect son-in-law’s copybook by promising Jackie an afternoon tea, getting everyone dolled up and taxied down there, only to be given a very patronising but very deserved explanation of how to use online booking forms. Jackie took it well - the Walrus was “fine, love” - but I knew she’d never truly be happy until I righted my clerical clusterfuck and took her back. Our table was right by the window, which helped a lot with the overall experience I feel. You know those nice restaurants in hotels on the beach that allow you to disappear into the delusion of a life less ordinary while you’re on holiday or celebrating an occasion until you cross the lobby for a wee and some sandy little bastard nearly digs a chunk out of your smart shoes with his spade, completely unbeknownst to his parents who are topless, sunburnt and arguing loudly with the front desk about whether or not they can take their half-finished cans of beach lager into the bar area? The Grand wasn’t quite that bad, but I’m glad we had our little corner by the window, away from the main glare of the eponymous lights in the bar area, the perfect setting for a bit of quiet escapism looking out over the road to sea. We played our parts too, ordering cocktails and marinated ‘mammoth’ olives that were average-sized enough to suggest the description was referring to another aspect of the extinct woolly probiscedean’s make-up. These we enjoyed with some complimentary popcorn while we (I) sent our waitress back two or three times before we (I) were ready to order. In fairness, there were several combinations (got to get the entire order straight, and not just each individual course). The menu was centred around the kitchen’s grill, which offered five meat and five seafood options, and bolstered by several ‘classics’ from each category that were non-classic enough to spend plenty of time mulling over, like the roast cod with ham hock, hispi cabbage & panko egg yolk, for example. I should have ordered that one, actually. In the end I went for the monkfish and then ran after the waitress to change it to a steak.I don’t eat steak often enough not to be tempted by it every time it’s on the menu somewhere that isn’t Wetherspoons, but it was still a safe choice that in hindsight almost paid off. It was tasty, and well-cooked, and large and good value for money, but didn’t quite leave me with that celebratory joy I get when I take a mouthful at certain dedicated (and granted, more expensive) steakhouses. The portions were big all round actually, and so the highlight was everyone getting to try a bit of everything. The king prawn that came with Jackie’s starter was humungous and delicious (even Mich tried and liked it); the lobster & macaroni croquettes were crispy and light; the rump of lamb was outstanding I thought; the Asian-style beef rib got the most plaudits; and the oysters provided as much entertainment as they did enjoyment. Maybe we belong in the lobby after all.

Dined as a table of 4 Saturday evening - all had starters, mains and wine and the food was delicious. Between us we had fish and meat courses and both delicious but the SeaBass was the star of the show. Downside - no oysters or fillet steak at a 7:30pm reservation on a Saturday but like the said above the food was delicious so we’ll just have to come back!

Highly recommend Going to be my go to recommendation now for anyone visiting Brighton and a must go now when ever I visit. We walked in without a reservation and unfortunately they didn’t have any seating but the host was very polite and got a table for us within an hour. We came back, got seated and ordered the: Toasted Focaccia bread and glazed pork belly to start with. Both full of flavour and brilliantly prepared, the focaccia with a soft crunch and light butter spread wasn’t heavy at all the the pork belly melted in your mouth. For the mains we had the Rump of lamb and Lobster & Salmon burger, both amazing aswell but if I had to choose one the lamb was just a bit nicer, needless to say that the burger wasn’t short on flavour either. For drinks we ordered a peach Lexington ice tea (non-alch) and a margarita which didn’t fail to disappoint. I want to highlight again how great the staff were, their attitudes made all the difference and made the whole experience more enjoyable.

The venue was really lovely but the food and service was something else. I ordered the ‘crispy’ squid as a starter which ended up being soggy and oily. For the main, the short-rib was stiff and it was tough to get it off the bone. The portion sizes were tiny and I left feeling hungry. For the price it is definitely not worth it. Also there are barely any vegan/vegetarian options, which is surprising because of how vegan-friendly Brighton venues usually are. My friend was left with a risotto that looked like Shrek’s insides. The server was weirdly patronising, constantly trying to upsell and pointing out in front of everyone that I didn’t buy a drink with my meal.

I attended Cyan with my family and had the bruschetta to start which was delicious. For my main I had the prawn linguine which is usually a favourite dish of mine wherever I order it ! However there seemed to be no sauce at all included in the dish, I suppose opting for a simple butter sauce. This left me a little disappointed as the pasta then seemed quite flavourless. Nevertheless the prawns were delicious and the portion was a great size.

My Sunday lunch group visited this restaurant for lunch on the 13th of November for a members birthday dinner and I have to say it was generally a good experience. The portions are large (I had the slow cooked pork belly) and the vegetables served separately were generous portions (especially the roast potatoes) if not enough green veggies! The service was a little hit and miss and the 12.5% service charge is too much frankly for the level of service. It was a little noisy as it was busy but a shrieking baby at a table quite far a way was most unpleasant and the staff could have handled that better as it went on for ages (like take the child out for a while)- the parents were oblivious to the sound and it was not the right venue for a baby to be brought into IMHO. Top tip the coffee is not good and at 5 pounds overpriced!

Our visit was a mixture. My wife ordered a whisky and coke specifying no ice. I asked for some tap water on the table. The whisky and coke was bought with ice and so my wife asked for another without ice. She thought it tasted funny, assuming it was the added lime, for which she had no objections, but it transpired on the bill that she had been given a JD and coke. Bourbon, not whisky. When the waiter bought the water he kindly went to pour it into a glass. Unfortunately his mind was so distracted that it splashed quite a bit on the table too, and he left without realising. Easy for us to mop it up, but not what you'd expect at the Grand. When the roasts arrived, my wife's pork belly was entirely fat with no meat. These are the negatives. The positives are that the roast was replaced quickly and both my wife and I found our meals to be delicious, and happy that there was a generous amount of vegetables. The puddings were exquisite, the sticky toffee pudding probably the best I have ever had. The service from all staff bar the one waiter spilling the water was lovely, especially the waitress that smiled continually and checked in on us. So how was our visit to The Grand Cyan Restaurant. Very good, but areas that could be improved on.

I visited this restaurant for lunch on a Friday by myself. I ordered the scallops with split pea puree followed by lemon sole and house salad from the Friday lunch menu. I ordered the wine pairing. I was very surprised when told that the wine pairing was not available! How can you design a very small menu and offer wine pairings and then run out? Perplexing. Anyway, the pea puree with the scallops was indistinguishable from mashed potato. Perhaps I read the menu incorrectly. The lemon sole was delicious and buttery and had plenty of prawns with it. The salad contained enormous chunks of sun-dried tomatoes and lacked finesse. Sun-dried tomatoes should be used sparingly and cut up smaller in my opinion. The petit chablis that replaced the wine pairing was very good. The crowning glory for the entire meal, though, was the 3 hand-made chocolates with coffee. Quite superb.

We stay at The Grand but have never ventured into The Cyan before as we are vegans, but I thought after travelling to Brighton let's book inhouse for a change. Well I was very pleasantly surprised, we let the lovely staff know we were vegan and they made it very easy to order, we were served by the lovely young Harry and Tai, absolute credits to The Cyan and the over all Grand experience. The barman made us beautiful mocktails and really listened to what we like. The decor is absolutely beautiful, the restaurant is spotlessly clean, as were all the staff. The food was cooked to order and it was tasty and fresh, extremely well presented with care and was excellent considering this isnt a vegan restaurant. I was very impressed. When we are back in The Grand in November I shall definitely book our first night in The Cyan again. As a vegan I highly recommend.

Visited here at the beginning of the school Easter holidays. Wasn’t too busy considering. Service was pretty poor. Kids starters never came and even after we had asked for them after the mains had arrived, they still took an extra 10 minutes to arrive. Most of the adults had pasta, wasn’t offered any cheese to be grated on top which I know is a minor detail but surely this is part of an Italian restaurants service. In general the staff seemed really not very bothered with their customers. Only upside was that the food was quite nice and we had a voucher saving us 30% of our bill. Wouldn’t recommended visiting here with the poor customer service unfortunately. Oh and if you can help it, don’t visit the toilets! The floor was soaking wet, they stank and were generally pretty unpleasant!

I recently had the pleasure of enjoying an English roast dinner at a lovely restaurant, and I must say, it was one of the best dining experiences I have had in a long time. The crispy potatoes were the perfect complement to the tender, juicy beef that was cooked to perfection. The elaborate surroundings added to the overall ambiance of the meal, making it a truly special occasion. One thing I particularly appreciated was the attention to detail in terms of cleanliness. From the spotless tablecloths to the gleaming silverware, everything was pristine and well-maintained. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and they made me feel right at home. The roast dinner itself was a work of art. The crispy potatoes were fluffy on the inside and crunchy on the outside, making each bite a delightful experience. The beef was juicy and flavorful, with just the right amount of seasoning. It was easy to see why the restaurant has a reputation for serving some of the best roast dinners in town. Overall, I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a delightful English roast dinner in a welcoming, clean, and friendly environment. Whether you're a fan of classic cuisine or just looking for a tasty meal, this place is definitely worth a visit!

Absolutely fantastic roast, welcome, bar staff after a lovely stroll along the under-cliff from Brighton. Highly recommend.

Went to watch the football, lovely football crowd which was ace. Unfortunately no house red, the alternative being over £20 for 2 glasses which I didn’t know until charged. Complimentary food brought out to everyone apart from us!

The table was booked for 5 adults and two dogs. Great food and plenty of it, even the dogs were given a separate bowl full. It was very busy but the food was brought quickly and piping hot. The only disappointment was the location of the table, next to where the food was served from and we didn't feel we could relax after the meal. This was only a minor inconvenience. As I said it was very busy but with quality of service and food you could understand why. Highly recommended and we will return.
