Overnight stay with meals. We had a 1 night stay at the Cumberland Inn this month. It cost 120.00 for 2 to stay including breakfast. First impressions were that the whole place looked tired and in need of a refurb. We used on the street parking, we were lucky as this is quite limited. Once inside I was disappointed see how tired it also looked inside especially with the number of 4/5 star reviews this place had. We noticed stains on walls, ceilings and carpets. The bar area and breakfast rooms are both quite small and seem cluttered with collections of nic nacks and bar mats stuck to the walls. The welcome we had was good and we soon had a table and ordered a meal. The food was average, it was hot, reasonably priced. Staff busy but attentive. Our bedroom room was up a flight of stairs. The stairs and corridor look tired and are also in need of redecoration. Our room was large and warm. The bed was comfy and clean with lovely sheets and pillows. The room itself looked okay, appeared clean on first inspection but there were stains and marks on the carpets and walls. There was a handy mirror on the door and the room had a lovely big window. There was a good selection of drinks and some biscuits in our room which were very welcomed. The door to the bathroom was hanging off its hinge so didn’t shut properly. The bathroom looked clean but had rusty window fittings and the radiator looked as though it had leaked at some point. The shower tray seemed to fill and threatened to overflow when the shower was tried so we didn’t use it. In the evening the bar area was busy at times but friendly with a good selection of drinks. The staff were lovely and attentive. When we went to our room for the night there was only a little noise heard from the bar so we slept well. The breakfast was good. We ordered the night before as requested but didn’t get what we asked for. I got mushrooms which I didn’t want. Husband asked for hashbrowns and toast which he didn't get. We could have mentioned this at the time and I’m sure it would have been sorted but we decided not to as the breakfast was sufficient and drinks were topped up so we were quite happy. However because of the general tired and unloved look of the place we wouldn't come here again.

A little shabby outside, but a varied menu & reasonable prices, along with 20 or so years of Good Beer Guide stickers in the window tempted us inside. The slightly shabby chic continued inside, but homely & welcoming, & with a large suntrap terrace at the rear where we headed for our food & drinks, taking in the view across the playing fields below to the hillsides beyond. Three real ales on tap, & a whole mass of beer mats displayed around the place further points to this place's dedication to good beer, which is always a major plus in my mind. Food-wise, as well as the usual pub staples, there are a few TexMex options which is an unusual find. Enchiladas were really tasty, as was my wife's chicken pie & veg. Would recommend & return.

I visited with my parents, and we had a lovely home cooked meal. My dad had the mince and dumplings, and he said they were lovely! My mum and I had mushroom soup. It was home made, and absolutely delicious. We sat inside; however, there was a nice outside area with beautiful views. It was reasonably priced, and we were made to feel welcome. There are a mixture of local people and tourists. It was an interesting place to visit!

We had visited the day prior for a drink and decided it would be nice to return the following night for a meal. Upon entering the restaurant, there were reserved plaques on each table. My husband politely asked if him, myself and our 4 month old could sit and have dinner before the reserved table arrived, he was told no problem by the waitress. Minutes later, we were then shouted at by the same waitress for sitting at the table. We were told there was no food and we were to go. Completely understandable if there wasn’t an appropriate amount of food, however we being told 2x different things, by the same waitress, and the manner in which she spoke to us was disgusting. We are visiting for another couple of nights, but definitely will NOT be returning.

Very unwelcoming pub, ruined our 1st day in Alston. Having seen the sign we went in for dinner, sat down at the table and asked for a food menu, at 6pm and they said they couldn’t do food as had too many reservations coming in later. 4 tables were reserved around the bar area. So much for a “food served”. Avoid.

We had a lovely walk into Alston with our son on our family holiday - who became cranky and hangry after a long trek and we were rescued by the excellent welcoming and hospitable staff at The Cumberland Inn. It has a lovely cosy and relaxing atmosphere that immediately put us all at ease - staff were accommodating and helpful and excellently good natured when faced with a confident diner in the form of my 7 year old. The beer was an excellent selection and i enjoyed the different tankards! The food was great pub grub, well prepared and satisfying. We had a great first day of holiday outing here and look forward to a few more trips before we head home. 10/10!!!

Lovely staff, welcomed from the start. We sat outside for lunch, promptly served and waited upon with a smile. We had our dog, and a bowl of water was brought out for us without asking. Steak pie was lovely, dumplings were also commented to be good. Kids ate freshly made sandwiches and chips, went down well. Only thing that bugged me was unisex toilets, a sign of the times I guess, but I wouldn’t of allowed my 6yr old daughter to go to the toilet on her own if I knew the arrangement was like this. The place was quiet as it had just opened but it was still unsettling to find out after she had been.

The bar staff were friendly and attentive and the music choice was eclectic (another thing I love). I had the deep-fried Brie to start with followed by the specials lamb burger. Both were fabulous. Had a great lunch of 3 starters and looked forward to returning for our evening meal (we were staying in another local hotel). Arrived 5 minutes early and after 15 mins had to call a server to order drinks. Drinks came reasonable quick and we said we were ready to order food, waitress said she had to clear a table and she would would be back to take our order. Eventually 45 minutes after we had arrived, my husband had to leave the table and find someone to take our order. We were unhappy that tables that had arrived after us had been served food and starters before our order had been taken. We ordered our mains and waited an age for it to arrive. My Singapore noodles came without the prawns I requested, plus some of the noodle were hard. My husband ordered spicy meatball linguine, which was at best average. We were served some good beer and ordered sandwiches, which to be honest were okay but would have benefited from being presented better. Visited this pub twice during a recent weekend stay in Alston, first for drinks, the second for drinks and a meal. This is a very popular hostelry with locals and visitors alike and it is easy to understand why. It is a family run place and the excellent friendly service and banter provided makes everyone feel welcome. Add to this a great choice of beers and wines, open fires and wonderful home cooked food you will definitely want to keep going back for more.If you are there at a weekend you will need to book, it might be worth checking if they are expecting the "Hunts men" in, there was a large group there when we were eating and though this might add to the overall boisterous atmosphere of the pub, it won't suit if you have any hearing impairment or had ideas of a cosy romantic meal, however there is a restaurant that would be more conducive to those requirements.

Quite a large pub which seems very popular. Well priced food and drink. The food is highly recommended.

Just popped in for an evening meal - recommended by a couple of local people! The food was good quality pub grub......varied menu with "specials" and some good veggie options including the option I selected. The beers/ales on offer were good quality and as this pub boasts awards for cider options - need I say more?

After a very hard days walking we were warmly greeted. The room was tastefully decorated with all the necessary facilities. The food was excellent and home cooked. If you are interested in real ale then this is definitely the place for you as it’s won their regional “pub of the year” CAMRA.

I was in Alston for one night whilst travelling. I'd eaten here before and it seemed logical to go there. So ... this is a traditional English pub with a good selection of beers & whiskies and a good selection of food, with good sized helpings.

A wide choice of tasty, home-cooked favourites and daily specials was just right for hungry walkers. Particularly liked the rice pudding dessert, a dish I've not had for a good many years!

Good value home cooked roast and home made apple crumble. Brilliant comfort food. Unspoilt old fashioned pub. Good quality beer.

This place is good for regular pub food, good but not amazing. Drinks were cheap, proper ale. Staff busy but managed to give a good service.

Came for lunch after a freezing rainy windy section of the C2C and the staff could not have been more lovely, they lit us a fire to dry our things and fed us very well- cannot thank them enough! Would highly recommend the food too!

Staff very welcoming into the pub. We sat in the lounge bar and had food and drink. Had the Sweet Potato Curry which was on the specials menu. Quick service and the food was really good and great portion size!

We met family for lunch a half way meet up to celebrate my son’s 18th birthday. We were very well looked after and all the food was lovely. Thank you so much for chilling the champagne for arrival, we will be back.

Stayed here to break our journey from Central Scotland to the Peak District. Had a very pleasant chalet type room at the rear of the property with easy access. Enjoyed a drink and an evening meal in the bar with our wee dog. We both had the sirloin steak with was generous in proportion and quite tasty.Staff friendly as were the locals. Would definitely return.
