Our first visit to the Cuckoo Inn (for the winter Thursday night Greek evening). Lives up to it's reputation on TA as probably the most friendly pub in the New Forest. Nic is a convivial landlord and has a great following of mainly locals but also travellers from slightly further afield such as ourselves. Greek food was delicious and bar prices very reasonable.

Lovely traditional pub full of cheerful locals and lovely Greek landlords who made us welcome. Had great beer and cheesey chips which were fresh hot and generous. We will call again. Thankyou!

I understood this pub offered Greek food and ordered a spinach and feta pie. What arrived bore no resemblance to a Greek dish. The plate held a round 'pie' of thick, wet pastry. The contents of said pie were orange/brown in colour and mushy in texture. So mushy I could not tell what it was but one bite was enough to know there was no feta in it. The vegetables accompanying this were so overcooked that one could not spear them with a fork. The smaller chips were just warm, the bigger ones were cold and hard. I would say still frozen. The entire plate bathed in lukewarm gravy. It was inedible. My husband's chilli had no meat in it. We did not complain as we were with friends but having had one bite I ate no more. I had to make myself lunch at 3pm when I got home. The pub itself was dirty, the menus stained and the atmosphere poor. The lady serving struggled to use the tech to take our order. I could not recommend this pub at all. The pub is pretty on the outside but the inside failed to live up to the pretty exterior. We should have read the reviews more carefully. Others have said the same sort of thing.

How this pub ever reached 4.7 I will never know. We went in there with high expectations only to be very disappointed. We order soup with sour dough bread - it was very disappointing and the bread was definitely not sour dough. We also ordered club sandwiches the bread was white thin and tasteless, they even used the end pieces of the bread when you pay £11 for a sandwich with a few frozen chips, it definitely was not appetising. The pub did have a good choice of drinks, and a waitress / barmaid who was ran ragged in what looked like her bed top. Would we be returning omg No .

Whenever I was on holiday in the New Forest I came here then it suddenly shut but reopened a few years ago. Visited again and even better than before. A stonkingly good range of real ciders (£5), great food ( try the various ploughmans). Friendly staff, big beer garden, dogs allowed, and the pub is basically an old cottage and the layout is as it was a century ago. A gem of a place.

We met our son and daughter in law here for lunch and it was great. The food was outstanding, served by a happy, friendly young waiter. We sat outside under a shady gazebo which was lovely. Lovely traditional English pub. I use to play croquet at Hamptworth but its not a friendly place and the bar food and drinks are extortionately expensive and the premises lacks charm and character. So AVOID at all COST and visit the amazing Cuckoo Inn instead.

Lovely old pub, nice choice of real ales and friendly staff. Food not good quality or value, wouldn't repeat. Burritos cold in middle and bread like a wet flannel. Chilli was a deep bowl of white rice and a tablespoon of meat chilli. Left with loads of rice and nachos, but nothing wet. Who wants to eat white rice alone.

Visited the Cuckoo late June on a Monday, we both had a ham and cheese ploughman’s and chips. The cheese was hard and dry and the ham was cheap poor quality that I would not buy for sandwiches. Did not compare to the quality of the ploughman’s we had last summer there. I know times are difficult but they still charge a good price so should have better quality ingredients. Decent ham is cheap enough from any supermarket.

Stopped off for a pint of Summer Lightning but decided to grab some nibbles at the same time. Chips, honey sausages and the Cuckoo charcuterie. Chips were light and fluffy, the honey sausage (which we told was Cumberland) was a German bratwurst, cut into slices, with chives and maybe some honey and the charcuterie a match for any restaurant. The garden was as peaceful as ever with only the ocassional car going past.

We are all retired railwaymen and once a month walk part of England. We arrived in Salisbury and drove to Downton and then walked through the first until we came across the Cuckoo. What a fantastic time. We planned to arrive about 1pm, have lunch, and remain for a couple of hours. So much were we enjoying oursilves we left at 5.10pm. We have been in some marvellous pubs across England but the Cuckoo rates as one of the best. The young barmaid was on the ball and deserved the tip we left for her. We only left when we did was because we had to walk two miles back to the car. At least it sobered the driver up not that he had drunk that much (two pints and two coffees.) We all had out lunches and ate heartily I having the cheese sharer all to myself. beautiful. Pulled up to the Cuckoo today, around 1:00pm, with the kids for a light lunch and a drink. I've been here many times before and enjoyed delicious beer, good food in the fairy-tail garden of this lovely pub. This time however was very different. On arrival, the gate was open with signage proclaiming their opening times and the food and drink within. The garden was rather overgrown but I was unphased. There were a few empty glasses on tables and a man sat at one of them rolling a fag.I tried the first door; it was locked. I asked the man who was sitting"Excuse me, do you know if they're open?"To which he remained silent and motionless. On seeing a sign which said "Entrance this way" I walk around the building trying a few more doors - all were locked.I returned to the man and repeated myself."Are they open, or will they be soon?"He continued rolling cigarettes and staring into space, as if caught in some sort of Time dilation, negative-reality-inversion; unaware of mine or my kids presence."Hello, are you OK?" I said to him. still no answer or movement. He did appear to be breathing but not sentient. So we left, in that slow backing away motion people do when they're a bit freaked out and fear their children's lives. I can only assume that the Cuckoo is now permanently closed. Except for the presence of one old man - possibly a ghost - who sits alone at a table rolling cigarettes never to be smoked.

Walking into the Cuckoo Inn is just like walking back in time into someone’s front room, which is actually correct- the book about ‘Distinctive Pubs’ in the area, left on the bar, mentions that the Inn was created by merging two existing cottages- hence the strange and crowded interior design. In reality the overall seating area is large with two outdoor areas, one very large area at the rear being also used for occasional live music; the interior seating is much more limited though. As a Free House the Inn has an interesting selection of real ales and a huge selection of Ciders and Gins. We had soup and a Bacon and Brie roll with our drinks which were excellent. Definitely a good place to visit the only concern would be getting served from the very small bar when the pub is busy.

A small pub sat off the normal trail, traditional in appearance on the outside but a warren of little rooms and bars on the inside. This is primarily a drinking pub, the lunch menu remains comfortably set in the 1970’s, sandwiches and very simple fayre (No chips) but the real attraction is the real ale. Walls are covered by awards from CAMRA and other organisations but sadly I was unable to test these out. The service against a small portfolio was nothing more than exemplary, there was nothing too much trouble. one of a our party is a vegan, a growing need across the population, but with a small menu there little scope but this didn’t deter the staff, working through the kitchen cupboards they managed to rustle up wholesome ‘beans on toast’, this went along with some simple but very good sandwiches that the others had. As the order had been paid the chef came out to reminds us that we needed to pay, £3.12 was owed, but would accept £3, this sums up the pub, it exists to provide a service to it's customers, it is small, quaint and perfectly placed in a small village. It doesn’t have high aspirations of gourmet feeding, just pure and simple excellent beer, snacks not meals and above all to meet customer needs at every opportunity.A welcome jewel in a world of pub chains and fast food, long may it survive and prosper.

Shame one of us was driving or we would have been there all afternoon and evening! Very friendly welcome from the landlady, excellent real ale and chatty locals. Lovely beer gardens front and back plus a relaxation area. Cosy and charming inside without being too oldie-worldy or over the top. And what was so refreshing was that apart from fantastic meat pasties, the pub didn't do food - hurrah! Which we could have taken this pub back to Cumbria with us.Will be following it on Facebook from now on and we definitely aim to return in New Year.

We came on a Thursday lunchtime and were surprised how many people were there. We had a beer and a glass of wine and some crisps to nibble. Very relaxing and enjoyable. Staff are always very pleasant.

Thank you so much for looking after us this afternoon. Weary mum and groovy granny and 2 children after fabulous mottisfont visit, stopped at The Cuckoo on way home. Utterly charming landlord opened a little early to revive us! Lovely wine and provided us with an exceptionally warm welcome and games for the children. Very much appreciated and we will be back lots! Especially looking forward to your beer festival in September! Thank you!

Great food, lovely location and outside beer garden. The gentleman behind the bar was very helpful with food and drink choices. I would certainly return here.

A lovely clean freindly pub that I often pass and took the oppurtunity to visit. Good range of beers and food. Food sadly only served at midday not evening.

The fish and chip comes on a Friday evening and is a great way to start the weekend! We sat in the garden in the evening sun and enjoyed our food with a couple of drinks.

I love this place. It's simple it's slightly out the way it's odd it's unique it's my my favourite pub. If you are used to plastic pubs full of lost souls then stay away. Real life English characters welcome. Good beer simple food ..enough said

Stopped here for lunch after a walk in the new forest. It is set in a quiet location, and is very picturesque outside however inside it's all as it should be with a great selection of real ales and a simple and reasonably priced sandwich and ploughmans menu. I had a couple of pints of Hogsback Citra and my friend had Palmers and both were good and well kept.We both had cheese Ploughmans which at £7.50 were good value and very tasty. The only slight cloud was the landlord didn't exactly exude bonhomie and welcome, but I think he may be new into the job so may well improveI would definitely go back.

Recommended to visit this pub by a local and weren't disappointed. It's tucked away down a country lane with a lovely garden at the front (not sure about the back). The pub itself is quant, as are most of the New Forest pubs. Didn't eat here as they only do food at lunchtime but on a Friday evening a mobile Fish and Chip van visits and he seemed to be doing great trade. Like most New Forest pubs it's worth a visit just for the chocolate box look and the real ale.

Stumbled upon this place while cycling through the forest. The beer garden is large, and there were a couple of people playing tasteful music on banjo, guitar and flute which was really nice. The food served is simple, but good, and the range of ales fantastic. Staff were chirpy, and incredibly helpful. Couldn't ask for a better spot.

Visited with friends. Amazing to find such a choice of beer, all in excellent condition and reasonable price, in this un-spoilt, out of the way country Pub. If you like good beer this is a must
