I just happened to smell the fish and chips in the street above Crown Street, as this was my first visit here I had no idea of where to go!!! I asked a local in one of the shops who pointed myself and my granddaughter to the correct place. We both sat outside opposite on a bench. With our dog Bella! I went in the chip shop and ordered fish with small chips to share with my granddaughter. Well I can’t explain how delicious it was, the fish was white, chunky with perfection crispy batter. My granddaughter is quite a fussy eater but she ate almost all of the fish and left me a minute bit! We both polished everything, the chips were gorgeous chunky but soft in the middle. They were perfection, I heard the lady serving mention beef dripping, so I assumed that’s why both chips and fish were so tasty and absolutely perfection. We had to leave our camp site the following day and I begged my husband to call back at this wonderful chip shop again as I fancied all three of us sharing the king size fish and chips, priced at just over £10 for our lunch! The small chips and fish we had both eaten was ample for us two, so the king size would have probably been too much for the three of us! Anyway if you want the most wonderful fish and chips don’t hesitate to go here I would highly recommend this place! Ok you have to wait a while in a queue, but isn’t that what us Brits are well known for!

Friends and family had raved about fish and chips at the Crown some years ago but as I don't live near I'd not tried them. I was visiting last weekend and despite reading some reviews recently which were non too complimentary I decided to try them. I'd no need to have worried they were absolutely delicious! I can thoroughly recommend!

Put simply this was the worst fish & chips i have had for at least a decade… Chips: like kevlar , titanium and leather combined into an inedible tooth cracking substance = gave 90% to the bin ! Bin not happy 😃 Fish: bone dry and i mean crumbly dry and totally tasteless … Whole lot double dipped and baked under a heat lamp until leathery and literally I couldn’t bite into it… My advice don’t go or wait until you see a massive queue so you know that at least they aren’t double dip frying them etc

Awful. The fish AND the chips were reheated from the night before ( or maybe the week before?). The peas were not cooked and not mushy. Inedible. It went in the bin Like the previous review said, I can see why the shop was empty. They may have taken my money today, but I won’t fall for it again.

I went in for a bag of chips around noon, you would have thought they would be good at preparing them as they are a fish and chip shop after all, but no. There were plenty of chips but most were over cooked (or re-heated?) which made them dry, tough and inedible. I threw most of them away - I daren't even feed them to the pigeons in case they choked - honestly! No wonder the shop was empty when I went in. I will not be back.

This place isn't awful but, neither is it great. If you go after the lunch time bust period then your food probably won't be very hot. Also for some reason they seem very proud of the fact that they cook in beef dripping which will come as a shock to anybody not used to that. It also means of course that there is nothing veggie here. Most of the staff are friendly and helpful which counts for a lot as far as I am concerned. However, this listing is very out of date. The indoor section hasn't been open in months and the take away staff don't know if it ever will open again. So, no seating no wheelchair access and no toilets. It is however, one of the only eating places in Hebden that still caters for traditional working class people. It won't suit everybody but it will be just what some people are looking for. Not as cheap as it used to be (but what is?) but still a lot cheaper than a lot of other eating places in Hebden.

Used to really love this shop but had a most disappointing offering today. The fish was tasty enough but small and the batter soggy. The portion of chips was extremely meagre- one layer of chips on the paper and not even really a bagful. I asked for scraps and didn't get them so asked for them separately. You'd think they were in short supply the tiny quantity I was given. Then I asked for peas. "Did you say gravy?" No, peas! Id been comforting myself about the paucity of chips with the thought of peas bulking it out. I dont think you should still feel peckish after spending £8 in a chip shop. When I got home I found I'd been given gravy anyway! To be honest when i saw the size of the gravy container i guess it might have contained 10 peas so would have been equally disappointing!! What I guessed were scallops looked more like hash browns but I didn't order any as they were 95p and didn't want to risk that just being for one hash brown!

Gave up trying the fish months ago, overcooked, heavy greasy batter. Yesterday on a whim went in and ordered chips and gravy ( surely nothing could go wrong) . Awful overcooked chips struck together in a lump with a meagre dribble of dehydrated gravy, disgusting and cost £3.85 to add insult to injury. Tourists won't know, but surely, make a little effort! You'd have a lot more local custom.

The fish wasn't haddock and the batter was a pre-mix, soggy when we got them home and the chips were cold. The whole experience of waiting and watching the man who was frying and the girl who was serving was a nightmare as it gave me time to look around the shop while they moved at a snail pace with looks of "I can't be bothered" on their faces. Used to be great, but now it's pretty awful!Chips: soggy, oily, pale colour, no 'bite' at all.Fish: The fish itself seems okay, even the batter was not bad, but it was punctuated with bits of hard fried leftover batter from the previous batch - eeeew!!The prices have also gone up, which okay, I know this happens, and would have been happy to pay the extra if the quality was the same, but this is not the case.I ate it because I was really hungry and could not afford to buy another meal. It didn't taste terrible, but it was not that 'oh wow, fish and chips special treat', far from it. It was fuel, nothing more.I sincerely hope that this is taken as constructive criticism, the best possible outcome from this is that we get to have our awesome chippy back please!

I hope this is taken constructively and things improve. I’ll leave it a couple of months before going again unless I see better reviews. Popped in for fish and chips and sat inside. Orders taken and we waited ages for our food. We asked if there would be much longer to wait as our little ones were getting very impatient, we were told the takeout side was very busy so that’s why there was a wait. So basically people coming into the other side got their food quicker than us because we were seated. We had to wait until they were all served before we got our food even though we saw people walk in after us and back out again while we were still waiting! The food itself was very nice and a great price. If we go again, we’ll probably go in the take out side as it’s quicker.

As a Lancashire lass I've not found them anywhere else, but the occasional rare treat is a must - basically the battered bits left over are gathered and served as "scraps" when asked for. We shared a chips as a snack knowing we'd be eating late - and wished we'd had the full order each. YUM. Did I mention that?

Crown Fisheries used to be the best chippy for miles however since being taken over it is a different story entirely. Previously upon entering the shop there would be a warm and welcoming atmosphere however now it’s cold and unfriendly. The food sitting in the display looks unappetising at best and the staff blatantly don’t care about their customers. We weren’t told there was no curry sauce (at 6pm?!) until our food was ready to go, had we known before we would’ve chosen differently. When we got back we realised that the mushy peas were 90% water so had soaked through the batter of the fish rendering it soggy and disgusting. The chips were either soggy or half raw and the scallop was just a pile of mush with almost no batter. On top of all of this the sausage was mush within a skin, no one’s expecting a butchers quality sausage from the chippy but this was absolutely foul. It all ended up in the bin after a couple of horrendous mouthfuls. This is such a shame as previously it was somewhere you know you’d get great food. Unbelievably disappointed.

We then had a lengthy wait in the takeaway side which was frustrating because my visitors had limited time. Marshalls Pie Shop had the same "Hebden rumors" when it changed from Waites. There will always be hiccups when new owners take over but it was great today. And in the past the old owners would often have a bad chip day, and the wait at times was long as they cook fresh, but that gets forgotten. after mums app today, we decided to stop off at the crown fish restaurant b4 going for a drive over the tops, anyway we walked in & the place was virtually empty apart from 3 tables inc ours, inspite of hebden bridge been busy, we ordered fish'n'chips & mushy peas & curry sauce , mixed b'n'b, & pot'o'tea 4-2, it was hot and delicious & it filled the spot. The only downside to this establishment is that its a cash only payment, mean who really carries cash these days???, come on the crown modernise your payment system, more bums on seats, means more money for you

Lovely, tasty fish and chips with a choice of mushy or garden peas which makes a change these days - not everyone likes mushy. Huge pot of tea and bread and butter came with the fish and chips. And what a bargain! A bit oldy worldy in a good way. Very nice staff. Recommended

This is one of the few Fish and Chip cafes still in the go in the town...there used to be 3 but all seem to have changed into something else! These are good size portions with smaller portions for OAP on certain days in the week. Mushy peas were good, bread and butter and a pot of Tea or Coffee are included in the price. They don’t stay open beyond 6-30during the week evenings so get there in time. Worth noting as well they only take CASH. no cards. But as good as ever, the fish was lovely. Friendly waitresses.

This is Hebden's sole (geddit) fish and chip shop and cannot be battered. Halifax and its environs are now a total wasteland for fish and chips and the Crown is up there with a small number of upper Calder Valley chippies that show how it should be done and still deliver the goods (Todmorden's Chippy and Gradma Pollard's also get hat tips for quality).

We often visit hebden bridge as we love to walk our Labrador in the lovely park. Today we visited as the chap selling Indian street food was at the market and does the best onion Bahjis ever which we stock up on regularly. My husband and I got fish and chips to take out and went to the little park area over the road to eat. We both agree they are some of the best fish and chips we've had. Our lab likes them too!.

both me & my 76yo disabled mum decided to go to the crown fish n chip restaurant for lunch after we been to tescos in Brighouse, we had fish chips n mushy p's curry sauce and pot o tea 4 2, and once again it hit the spot. but the downside to this plaice is it only takes cash only, think they find they would get a lot more customers in if the customers could pay by card as well as cash.

We didn't go into this place, but there were lots of Yorkshire locals outside on an early Saturday evening having such a great time eating their takeout meals. We saw the fish and they do traditional meat pies. Prices more than reasonable. This whole town is very inexpensive for meals and drinks.

Having read a mix of reviews for Crown Chippy there appear to be inconsistencies in people's experience - unfortunately my two experiences have been poor - first occasion my good lady had chips which she described ad OK & I had scallops which had overcooked greasy batter but were edible. Yesterday we had chips & the only reasons I ate them were 1) I was very hungry & 2) I'd spent money on them.It amazes me that in this day & age chips can go so badly wrong - they were on this occasion pale, limp, greasy, sticking to wrapper, disintegrating & after only a five minute walk barely warm - the only plus was no greasy after affect on the palate. Now how do they get it so badly wrong? Is it the variety of potato? Is that the oil is not hot enough? Have they put too many chips in at once so that the oil is unable to work it magic on each individual chip? Have they removed them too soon? Is it dependent on staff present? Do staff fry to a formula or to their own taste?I've only sampled chips from one other local ish establishment (Grandma Pollard's in Walsden), I haven't got around to writing a review for that experience yet but chips there were slightly better but not worth travelling any distance for.I'm now on a mission to find decent chips in the Calder Valley as so far having visited perhaps the two most renowned purveyors of this traditional fayre in the area I'm left feeling somewhat disappointed.

Absolutely disgusting food. The fish batter was old and burnt and the fish was a dried up old mess. Instead of white flakey fish it was a blob of dried up old rubber. The curry sauce tasted of nothing and the mushy peas were just a pile of old wet slop. Never had such disgusting fish and chips. Perhaps they get their fish from the local canal in the town? The staff are unfriendly, curt and uninterested. It's service with a scowl.

Called in with a friend on an outing to Hebden Bridge, it's been a lot of years since I was last here and just had take out then. It was about 1.30 when we went on a Friday and the takeaway bit was very busy with a longish queue, nice and quiet in the restaurant, bar one lady just leaving and another couple. We ordered the haddock and chips with mixed bread and pot of tea all included for 7.50 each. Plenty of other choices, eg chicken, and sausage dishes and a few items on the children's menu. Some nice sweets to be had but we were full e ough with our fish and chips. Very tasty and nice and hot. Will be calling again.

Heard good things about this takeaway so decided to grab to go on first night of a week long stay in Hebden Bridge.Other reviews have suggested that Friday is a busy night and to start queuing early, but we managed without too much of a wait. Freshly cooked fish was good but found the chips a bit wan and average to be honest. Having grown up in Yorkshire I was amused to see the excitement of people when they encountered batter 'scraps' (we used to call these 'bits') available at no extra charge!Overall I found the fish up to standard but can't get too excited about a return visit to this establishment.

Shoddiest fish and chips i’ve ever had. Asked for 3 large fishes, only got 3 and got charged for 4. Asked for 2 tubs of mushy peas and only got one. Terrible quality fish on top of it. Bloody awful.
