Crown & Pepper in Tandridge

I had this lovley barman and waiter, they where so patient and the waiter had a nice chat with me and my mate ethan, we been here twice now and both times have been amazing

For the last 12 + months I have visited the Crown & Pepper in Caterham monthly. Despite me trying different dishes on the menu, I always go back to the Paneer Tikka Masala with Peshwari Naan. An absolutely delicious dish, not to spicy but just right. I also love that the portions are generous.

Had a great night last Saturday celebrating a friend's 50th The staff were friendly and very efficient - there were so many staff on duty that nobody had to wait to be served. The atmosphere was really good as was the food. Thanks for a memorable night Crown and Pepper 👍

I highly recommend this lovely restaurant serving great Indochinese/Asian food. The service was prompt and the server was very helpful in deciding what to choose. The ambiance was great. I attended with friends both vegetarian and non vegetarian. We decided to order some of favourites and some dishes the server recommended. All the dishes came out with distinctive flavours. They clearly don't use the same sauce in everything. If u like great service,great food I highly recommend this place.

Excellent food and great service. The starters are outstanding, and the main courses are pretty good. Especially enjoyed the Chow Chu Cauliflower, the Chicken Tikka I would heartily recommend a visit. We've visited a dozen times now and the food on each visit has been excellent. We also went on Mother's Day 2025, at which we were served a limited but great menu; and once again the food was excellent

My Delicious Journey one afternoon at the Crown and paper Caterham ! Every visit to Crown and paper Caterham is a treat, especially with the incredible variety from the chinese. The atmosphere is elegant, the service is impeccable, and the food we experienced was simply outstanding.

Usually, order from south Croydon branch. Ordered from this branch by mistake hoping for it to be like the croydon branch but was very very disappointed. Food arrived. No taste, meat was poor quality. It smelt. and dishes were watery and tasteless. I was very disappointed. I hoped that it would be like the other branch but was not. Do not order from this branch. Not worth the money.

What a miserable grim experience the crown and pepper of Caterham is. Visited there a few years back and thought I would give it a second chance today. Miserable place with miserable staff. Thought about eating, but thank goodness I chose not to.

Visited on a Thursday evening and ordered a variety of Indo-Chinese dishes, along with a chicken biryani. The service was prompt and polite. The dining area was quiet, with a few customers in the bar area watching. Biryani is a dish that relies heavily on technique: layering marinated meat and partially cooked basmati rice, then slow-cooking them together to create depth of flavor and texture. You expect fluffy, long grains of rice, visible whole spices, and tender, well-seasoned chicken—all brought together in a way that signals a proper dum-style preparation. What we received looked and tasted more like a spiced rice dish. The rice was clumped, lacked the signature aroma or layered appearance, and had a uniform texture and colour—no visual or flavour separation that you’d expect from traditional biryani. There were no distinguishable garnishes or whole spices, and no visible pieces of chicken on the serving plate. It didn’t resemble biryani in either presentation or flavor. When we politely questioned the dish, we were told this is how they’ve been serving biryani for over 8 years and that no one had ever complained before. Despite us eating no more than a spoonful—and the pot still full and untouched—the restaurant refused to deduct the £13 charge from the bill. The other dishes had mixed results: the veg Manchurian was nicely crisped outside but slightly raw in the middle, and the Crispy veg noodles leaned quite salty—though we didn’t raise these with the staff. While the team was courteous throughout, the food, particularly the biryani, didn’t meet expectations. It’s fair to have a different interpretation of a dish, but when it strays this far, some openness to feedback would have been appreciated.

The food is delicious but our waiter was quite insulting. We were making a joke at the fact that I recieve free prawn crackers when i order a takeaway and whether we could have some and that, me personally, was a loyal customer etc. He laughed it off and kept bringing it up like "What, you got them free?!" "They aren't free here!". When he came back to collect the dirties, I said I'd like to take the remaining crackers home as there was alot. He said "Oh the loyal customer is still eating". I said yes and he whilst looking me up and down replied "Oh, I can see that you're a loyal customer" Just bloody rude! My friend said I shouldn't of paid the included service charge which I wish I didn't now. Not impressed!!

Having asked for a recommendation for a good curry in Caterham we were told this place had an authentic Indian chef, maybe tonight’s his night off… the service was friendly and polite, however the food to price ratio was very poor, the biryani was very stodgy and both main dishes had a very ‘strange’ taste, with football in my right ear and a speaker in my left created it an annoying ambiance with a disappointing taste in my mouth, sorry to leave a bad review but it’s not good, won’t be going back

Total Disappointment!!!! We have eaten at Caterham a number of times and always been satisfied. But today, We were served the worst Chili Paneer we have ever had. It was so vinegary and so firm. It was as if it was microwaved. We highlighted this to the manager and was told the recipe had changed. The food isn’t consistent at all. Definitely will not be going there or ordering any takeaways either. Not acceptable as it was not taken off the bill, considering how much you are paying. Don’t waste your money

The chicken gyoza dumplings are so good, five is never enough, special chow mein was very tasty. Noodles were cooked perfectly. I would like to see a few more prawns and a bit more chicken as to do the dish justice. I will definitely get this again.

Really disappointed. I have been wanting to try this place as have heard good reviews from word of mouth. Unfortunatly I have no idea what the hype was about. First impressions were great. Atmosphere was lovely and relaxing, it was lunchtime and was very quite. Lovely friendly service and the lady seating us went above and beyond helping and making sure we felt comfortable and can't fault her for a moment. However unfortunately great service isn't enough to make up for the food. We order a mixture but mainly chinese dishes. It went downhill the second the prawn crackers came out they were stale. Food came out quickly which was nice but a bit too quick. Chow mein was dry stale and almost seemed days old and just heated slightly. Flavours were either too bland or too seasoned meaning it wasn't enjoyable. Meat wasn't very good qaulity. Beef was chewy and tastes reheated and chicken was soft squishy and very strange texture none of us felt comfortable eating it. Rice was cold with a strange taste. Spring rolls were lovely and crispy on the outside but the inside was mushy and flavourless. Nearly £100 for 2 people and really it's was only just edible. Won't be returning.

Amazing service from Damian at the bar and a wonderful chef who had superb control of flavours across the Chinese menu available here. If you can’t come in, do make sure you order for collection or delivery for a taste of real happiness haha

Went in for a quick drink, found an empty table, not reserved and not set with cutlery for dinner. After 10 minutes the most rude, unprofessional, obnoxious man I have ever had the misfortune to deal with came over and in a very load and aggressive voice said "You need to move, you cant just come in here and sit down move now" My wife then tried to respond but he just talked over her refusing to listen. He then said he needed the table as it was in the restaurant (there is no indication the pub has any segregation for dining) but there were plenty of tables at the from of the pub. I agreed to move if he found us a table elsewhere. WE got up to follow him to the front but he went back behind the bar and ignored us. WE then started to speak to one of the waiting staff who agreed to help but he then returned and instructed her to go and deal with something else without even acknowledging us or the fact he had interrupted the conversation. We will never use this venue again and will share with everyone we know and can reach out to how unbelievably poor our experience was and I cannot believe such a rude and unpleasant individual can be working in hospitality! If your in Caterham do yourself a favour walk part the Crown and Pepper and into the William Garland instead

I hit the phone restaurant icon but it didn’t link to their number. I found this on the website. They never answered. Three times! I then drove to the restaurant to get my order. It took staff fifteen minutes to see me and discover what happened. Only to find t driver was out there delivering my food. Luckily I caught him at the front door. Food was tepid!

Devastating service today 19/11/2024 My son was scheduled in for an op tomorrow and I wanted him to have a great meal before fasting. I ordered through Uber. Crown and Pepper had the order waiting on the counter for ages and between themselves and Uber - couldn’t communicate and get the order picked up, cancelled or refunded for ages. No accountability from either. Had to cancel with such a disappointing outcome, poor service and lack of empathy. This is where compensation would’ve been a human thing to do. It’s just food at the end of day but it would’ve made my son’s evening. Thanks for nothing.

I always enjoy the chinese food from here. Best bbq spare ribs from anywhere that I've had them. Generous amounts of meat/prawns in the dishes that we had. Driver even found the address okay though it isn't the easiest to find in the dark in a poorly lit road where houses have names rather than numbers, and was earlier than the estimated delivery time. Definitely worth the extra money.

This resturaunt has the best asian fusion menu in a sit-down resturaunt I have ever eaten. The range of choices, quality of preperation, and especially the signature 'Salt and Chilli' options blow any competition out of the water. Now i'll caveat this as we probably aren't the typical customers here. My family is all vegan, and we have an allergy sufferer in the group, so we are definitely what you'd call "Picky". We all have fairly unusual taste, and like things very very spicy (by british standards). We don't seat at the bar, which seems to be a really big draw, with large groups often in to watch the footy. If anything, for us the fact this place is a busy sports bar is a mark down for atmosphere. It is noisy, and the music can be loud. But when the food comes out? You will not be complaining.

I would normally give 10/10 for Crown and Pepper as the food is lovely and service really good. Unfortunately on this occasion we did not receive “something extra for ordering over £35” and the beef with mushrooms contained no mushrooms!!!!

This is the third time of ordering. My husband absolutely loves the food, but after trying 3 different things, it just leaves me underwhelmed sadly.

The food is amazing the staff very friendly and extremely efficient can not fault the waiting staff had a smile on the faces and were run of their feet , our only criticism is that we found out the waiting don't get paid any of the service charge , to the manager you need to rectif

Always delicious food. I always enjoy the bbq spare ribs. Very meaty and chunky compared to what is served in other places. Impressive to have full size prawns in the special fried rice too. Order was ready for collection right to the minute as well.

Food was absolutely terrible yesterday. Use to like going to crown and pepper but this has put me off. Potions recieved on the takeaway were half containers and overcooked and dry. The food was recooked and horrible. Will not be going back.

Chicken Fried Rice was yum, not too salty with good amount of chicken and egg. The BBQ Chicken Nuggets were really naughty, so good, I wanted more, I should have ordered more! The food turned up nice and hot, I will definitely be ordering that again.

Great food, the best Chicken Methi Curry, goes down well with one of their cocktails. Definitely worth a visit. I'll certainly be going back.

First night out as a group of mums. Whole staff team were extremely friendly, couldn’t do more for us and food was brilliant. Really comfortable vibes for a nice evening out. Will definitely be back.

Food was okay. The service staff were nice. However, I asked if they could accomodate for a paneer tikka roll .. they said no. We asked for some butter for the Tandoori Roti.. and were refused. The reason was it was strict policy not to make any changes from the menu. A small adjustment like this could have been made, especially when they offer roti with butter. I think it's shame that this small request could not be accommodated. Just seemed a bit unnecessary.

Bit disappointed tonight. The duck was cold, the pancakes were rock hard like crisps. The onion Bharji’s were horrid, more like pakoras and very over cooked and tough. Barely any salad to go with the cold duck as well. It’s only a bit of cucumber and spring onion after all and at a cost of £15.45 a portion not impressed with it at all.

I ordered from here off of deliveroo and it is probably some of the worst food I’ve ever had in my life. I ordered the tandoori prawns, vegetable biryani and fried okra. The only thing that was even remotely edible in this order were the prawns, other than that, everything else tasted awful. I can’t even describe how bad this food tasted, I literally felt nauseous after eating it and I literally could not finish it at all, It tasted sickly. They should be taken off of deliveroo

Always on time and great tasting

Great place to eat with the family. We had ages ranging from 6 to 73 and everything in between. Huge choice on the menu meant everyone found something they liked. The food was delicious, hot and portions were very generous. Friendly staff, good atmosphere and reasonable priced drinks. Will certainly be recommending to friends and hope to be visiting again soon.

Fantastic food and service nice bar and lounge area have had takeaway and eaten multiple times with the restaurant and have not got a single bad word to say food is very tasty portions are good and I have never been left hungry, staff are always attentive and more than willing to help and always smiling. If you like Indian and you like Chinese or you just want a place to drink this is your place.

I haven't ordered from Crown and Pepper for a while, but like the fact they do a mix of cuisines and I really fancied a few bits. My order arrived 15 mins early and was piping hot. The delivery driver was a polite and friendly bloke. The food was tasty, I still have leftovers for lunch tomorrow!
