I've been in for a drink before and decided to give it a go for lunch. Very friendly staff got us sorted out with drinks and menus quickly. I really liked the menu, lots of choice, and Hallelujah - an establishment that offers a light bite option on the meals. We both chose the calves liver, a light bite size for me and full size for the companion. It was really excellent. I can't wait for my next visit.

We booked for a family lunch and I was happy to see some gluten free options on the menu. The pub is lovely, nice atmosphere, very friendly stuff and the service was good. My gluten free fish (cod & chips) was overcooked and there was very little fish there. Definitely not worth £19.50. The chips were nice. Other dishes were average. The cheesecake was served with some pouring cream that was a bit odd.

Our party went for lunch. Friendly staff and good service. We had a selection of starters. I had the scotch egg which is always one of my favourites but this version was definitely not on the list. Very overcooked, hard sausage meat and very hard boiled egg. Also, a strange sweet undertone. Oh well we thought, onto the mains which looked to be a good selection on the menu. Unfortunately reality did not live up to the expectation. The half a piri piri chicken was massively overcooked and was so hard that it was difficult to cut the chicken. It felt like the meat had been double-cooked. The other disappointment was the main of goats cheese salad. One small slice of cheese and a few leaves and apricot slices for £17 was short change. For desserts, had run out of lemon meringue pie which was a shame. I hate writing negative reviews and frankly, I wasn’t going to bother here but what changed my mind was that within an hour of leaving, I started to experience stomach pain and have had an extremely upset tummy for the next two days after. I had no breakfast on the day we visited for lunch and I can only think it was something I ate here. Maybe we picked a bad day but I can’t recommend.

We had dinner there and were shocked at the price. £24 for a mediocre rump steak. Our bill for two adults and two children under the age of 10 was £178.65. They are a pub, not a restaurant. Service was slow and not good. We can eat at other pubs for half that price and not be disappointed. Would not recommend or even visit again.

I wouldn’t normally review a pub meal but this one deserves it. We’re spending a few days near to The Crown and decided to have dinner there. It was fantastic. Five of us had the Sunday roast and one (who always chooses the most expensive meal on the menu!) had the fillet steak. The quality was excellent, the portion sizes were generous and there was a varied selection of vegetables included with the potatoes and meat, not just the usual choices. Friendly service, great location and perfect for a sunny Sunday evening. Anywhere that gets the vocal approval of my kids (aged 11 to 30) deserves a good review.

Stayed O/N in our VW with BritStops and popped in for a couple of pints. We were warmly welcomed by the owner, staff and some locals. Tried a number of beers (all of which were great) and chilled in the bar, admiring the great country pub decor. Dog friendly bar area and all round great atmosphere. Didn’t eat there but the food we saw looked great and we will definitely come back for a meal.

Slightly apprehensive having read recent reviews, but so glad the four of us ventured to the Crown. Good varied menu, but as it was curry night 3 of us chose from that menu. Two courses £20. Excellent Indian starters, curries spot on. Nice welcome and attentive service from Niamh, cracking pint of H&W Hazy IPA. Too stuffed for dessert. Wife’s light bite fish n chips good too. A grand evening, keep up the good work folks.

We have visited and stayed at the pub several times and always loved it. Unfortunately we weren’t able to stay at the pub this time as it was way too expensive (for the price of the room we managed to stay elsewhere and have a drink, starter and main each), but decided to still go for dinner, what a disappointment. I don’t know what’s happened with the quality of the food?! You definitely don’t get what you pay for. For £8, I had a slab of pâté but small triangles of brioche. I’ve never had pâté with brioche? My husband had a buttermilk chicken for a starter, smallest portion again for £8. The worst was the main, chicken caesar salad which wasn’t even one.. no sign of a lettuce leaf but included all the salad that is normally scraped to the side of a plate, bacon burnt to a crisp, the smallest egg, hardly any dressing and the smallest shaving of parmesan. My husband did have the tomahawk which he said was nice but quite expensive for what you get. We didn’t even bother with dessert. It was such a shame to see how much the food quality has changed and what was a tradition will probably now change as just can’t justify the amount we paid for the quality we got.

A family reunion spoilt by very poor food and extremely over priced for what you are served. The duck leg red cabbage and mashed potato was priced at just under £20 . The first duck leg was small and over cooked and dried up, the second leg was not much better, very stringy, the red cabbage and potato was barely luke warm and the smallest pub food portion as you can see below. The steak and red wine pie had more gristle than meat in it, the chichen in the curry hard and the Lasagnes were mush. We refused to pay for two meals. Shame on you 😕

Enjoyed a lovely family evening at this pub in marnhull. Friendly staff. Food was reasonable and good service. My only gripe was the cheese bourd on offer it was tiny . 3 tiny bits of cheese crackers and chutney. Way overpriced at £10.50 certainly wouldn't order that again. Apart from that a good evening had by all.

The roast that is the most expensive in the area and what do you get for the extortionate price and what’s it like: 13.95 for chicken and 18:95 for beef 1) The smallest stuffing ball. About the size of a ‘Rollo’ sweet. 2) 1 carrot 3) A tea spoon of Swede 4) 4 of the smallest potatoes (the size of a sprout) 5) Red cabbage that tasted like it had been washed in vinegar 6) cauliflower cheese that was cold and bland 7) Gravy that was so watery it was the worst I have ever tasted 8)Yorkshire pudding that was actually ok All that with the worst service ever by a waiter that smelt strongly of smoke with brown nicotine stains on his fingers, yuk. One to avoid!

My friend and I visited The Crown today for a roast lunch. We were SO disappointed! We both ordered the roast pork and were looking forward to a few succulent slices carved from the joint and some crisp crackling. However, we were presented with a dry looking pork loin steak with thick fat on the edge. Clearly not carved from a joint of pork! We told our waiter this was not what we were expecting and asked to change it for the roast chicken. He was very defensive, but agreed. When the plates were brought back, we had been given a chicken breast portion each, again clearly not carved from a whole roast chicken. The chicken was dry, the roast potatoes appeared to have been reheated, the carrots tasted like they’d come out of a tin, the Yorkshire pudding was soggy, the cauliflower cheese was mushy, there was one small stuffing ball (probably from a frozen pack), the mashed carrot and swede was tasteless, the red cabbage was acidic and rather slimy and the only green items on the plate were a couple of over-cooked spears of broccoli. We agreed the whole thing reminded us of a bad school dinner! We paid our bill and told the member of staff how disappointed we were. Again, she was very defensive and said that they had only had good feedback ‘from everyone’ (implying it was us who had the problem). No attempt to apologise or offer any kind of discount. Needless to say, we won’t be returning. Such a shame, as the Sunday roasts used to be excellent.

We had evening meal here on a Monday night . We booked a table but there was plenty of room anyway. I found plenty of vegetarian options a but settled on the Sunday roast vegetarian version. The prices were about average for the area around £17 for a main course. The service was good and the staff were polite and cheerful. The pub has a thatched roof and the car park is large. I have no hesitation in recommending this pub for a good meal.

I only come here once a year when visiting a friend, and I've always enjoyed the food. I ordered a meat pie with vegetables and in the past their meat pies looked and tasted home made and came with a selection of freshly cooked vegetables. This time the pie looked and tasted like it was heated up from frozen and the vegetables consisted of some peas mixed in a mash. Also the staff were less attentive - they had forgotten that we hadn't yet got our drinks when they later came to take our food order.

Very disappointing Sunday lunch! We ordered small Sunday roasts. The meal appeared to be microwaved - small portions of meat, seriously overcooked (burnt) roast potatoes, frozen mixed veg, two small very unpleasant carrots on each plate. It reminded me of school dinners of days gone by! The pub is very quaint, but our table was so close to the next one that we overheard everything that was said. It was also so noisy that we found ourselves struggling to have a private conversation. Some of the staff seemed almost robotic. This was our first, and probably our last visit!

Came today as a first time visitor with a large group of family. The roast and vegan roasts were AWFUL. Substandard and not worth the money. 3 meat roasts were served with 2 types of meat instead of the 3 advertised with tiny very poor cuts and portions, the veg was either overcooked or raw (the brussel sprouts were black!) The stuffing was burnt and dry. The vegan option (vegetarian 'wellington' was more of a pie with almost 1cm thick pastry which was raw in the middle)... The customer service was appalling not a smile in sight.... one meal was ordered without gravy when given had gravy and the server stated 'its only a little bit!' With an air of attitude....plates were stone cold as was the gravy meaning the food was cold because of this also..... had high hopes of The Crown Marnhull but won't visit again..... disappointing to say the least....

Reading other reviews about the crown it says unless a local don’t go. I agree. Even as a local I came in with friends who aren’t local. Waited for service at the bar whilst the workers chatted in the corner. Once a grumpy man rumbled over I asked for a pint and the reply was ‘ it’s a hall and wood house pub, we don’t serve that’. Made me feel stupid for trying to buy a drink, in a pub. Ordered 2 drinks, total £10. London prices for a village. Throughout our time in the pub we were made to feel resented. Terrible atmosphere, terrible staff, terrible service. Would not recommend for anyone, even a local who hasn’t been in the pub for a few weeks. Worst pub experience I’ve ever had. The Crown was recommended by friends who had eaten there. I myself had a look online at reviews before I booked, the reviews online were all mainly positive so I booked a table for the ‘Festive Fayre’. Upon arrival my friends and myself were seated to a lovely looking table, the arrangement was lovely. Unfortunately it went down hill from there...Food began to arrive. As a table of 7 we had a mixed range of starters from the soup to the pate, they were just not good, especially for the price of the evening, the soup cold and lumpy and well it didn’t taste like what it was ment to be. We had said something but the gentlemen behind the bar didn’t really care about our problem! Then mains, they were okay I mean the presentation of them weren’t the best. However I did enjoy the break they gave us between courses. Personally my pudding was lovely but I no some of the others had problems with things such as lumpy custard and burnt brownie.

Visited for lunch. My wife had the smaller portion liver and bacon. There was one slice of liver and one rasher of bacon with mashed potato, all well cooked. The big but comes there were no other vegetables served even though it said so on the menu. When asked the server said that the seasonal vegetables were not served on the smaller portion alternative. My wife would have preferred less potato and some other veg. The menu did not say you would only get part of what was shown if you ordered the smaller portion. As the smaller portion was only a couple of pounds less than the full sized one this made it poor value for money. The menu should be amended to reflect what is not served if you prefer a smaller plate. This was a shame as my wife enjoyed what she had. I had the whitebait starter and a bowl of chunky chips. Both were well cooked and was the portion size was good. The chips were especially good, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Would visit again if they sort their menu out identifying what you were actually paying for.

This is a popular pub, so its worth booking a table in advance. There is plenty of seating inside, and they do some gluten free options, or the chef will try and accommodate your dietary requirements.(ie cooking a gluten free sauce to go with the salmon.) The food was of a good quality and plentiful, however the deserts were not as good, and appeared to be of a purchased catering variety (lemon meringue) which was cold, soggy base and certainly not freshly baked.

It came out overdone. I had to really work hard to cut into the steak, even with a steak knife! Cooking a steak isn’t hard. I can cook to perfection an Aldi steak (£4.50). I sent it back. Second attempt was ok but the steak was so tough and chewy it was inedible. When i complained the abrupt waitress said she would get the landlady. The landlady tried to defend the meals. I said that my steak after 2 attempts i wasn’t going to pay for. Then the unprofessional response was “Your assertive” yes i am as i am not going to pay for a £17.50 steak which has been sent back twice and was tough as old boots. The pub is nice but the service in the restaurant is poor, the chefs are unqualified and the landlady needs to be trained in customer service. We will never go back.

A beautiful old style pub in the middle of this lovely village. Food is lovely and the service is good...but beware the portion sizes! The pub offers two sizes for most of the meals on the menu, but the standard size is often big enough to feed more than 2 people! This was especially true with the Fish and Chips, where the standard size Fish and Chips had two what must be at least 20-inch battered cod fillets, a huge portion of chips and enough peas to feed four people. The food was excellent, but I didn't even eat a third of the Fish and Chips, simply because it was far far too big! I'm not exaggerating when I say a portion of Fish and Chips can satisfy three people!

Popped into the Crown at Marnhull for dinner whilst staying nearby. The pub/restaurant area was full and there were no tables free. However, the staff behind the bar were amazing - even though rushed off their feet, they were polite and asked us if we didn't mind waiting. Within 20 minutes we were advised a table was free and we were shown to it. The food was lovely with a great atmosphere.

My wife had been here for an evening meal on many occasions but we recently had the opportunity to visit the pub for a family lunch. The choices, the specials, the actual food (starters, mains and puddings were all tasted) were all of a high quality. Happy to return there for lunch at any time.

This was a happy meeting on the road from Mere to Gillingham. A large, warm and friendly traditional pub, with a large fire, and serving a wide range of interesting dishes. Pies, grills and soups. We took the sausages in Yorkshire pudding with gravy and the deep fried haloumi with chips. Both really good, and served by friendly staff. Highly recommended.

Visited the Crown for a dinner with family. Great selection of food and specials. Our orders were taken and food was served in a good time. The food was excellent and the portions large. I had the fish pie which was excellent but just too large a portion. The other 3 meals were first rate and there was a pleasant relaxing atmosphere.

Our first time at the Crown during a visit to friends, we went with them to this establishment as they had booked in advance after a previous great experience that they had had there, and therefore highly recommended it, it was a great choice. initially a good laugh looking at the figure on the roof, he obviously does not eat in the pub!! The parking was great well looked after and easy spaces. A lovely warm welcome by both the staff and fire place belting out heat. On Sunday they have 2 sittings so we went for the post 2PM one and it was still busy but enough room for everyone too. We all went for the carvery and were not disappointing and the "chef" urged us to return for more veg if we wanted it , which I did, as it was so nice. Followed by a great selection of puddings, I felt well stuffed. .

Together with two friends, we returned to this very popular pub. We called in for lunch and once again left replete with an excellent lunch we all thoroughly enjoyed. What we like about it is the pleasant atmosphere, quality and quantity of food which gives excellent value for money. Again, we visited in mid week and there were plenty of diners enjoying not only the fare on offer but the open log fire, the smell of woodsmoke lingering in the atmosphere, lovely.

I have tried the carvery - great. This time visited with friends in the evening. Had full plates of good food, great. Just what we needed after a full day cycling, great. Cosy pub atmosphere, friendly helpful staff, great. Recommended.

The trouble with reviews is that they are merely a transient snapshot, what is good this month may not last beyond the next. However when dropped into The Crown in Marnhull, it was definitely a good day, the welcome was genuine and the pub itself was rather lovely. Great decor, just right for a pub in Dorset with comfy chairs and a spotless garden.

We stayed in a family room for one night on our way to Cornwall from Kent. Room was lovely with a great bathroom for us all. We had a nice meal in the evening in the busy and friendly bar and had probably the best hotel breakfast we had ever had. Would highly recommend this place for a night stopover or a weekend stay.

We stayed a night here, so sampled evening meal and breakfast. Both very good. Nothing fancy, and suspect the chicken was not home made, but the steak was lovely and the chips were gorgeous. Service was very helpful, and friendly.

This place has always been good and I don't think I've ever had a bad meal there. In the last few weeks I've had Sunday dinner there (in the evening too, very handy) and their excellent community breakfast which they do about once a month. I'd definitely recommend it.

This is a real country pub. It's full of locals (including dogs) yet the dining area is handled with professionalism, Great extensive menu and loads of tasty specials. Food was great - although far too many chips. Service lovely and overall, a lovely cosy ambience. Long may it continue - too many of these little gems are disappearing. We were a party of 5 and had a great evening.

In the 16 years we have known and loved this wonderful place, tenants have come and gone. The present incumbents seem to put commercial success before customer service, and have made changes which do nothing to preserve the character of what is one of the finest inns in Dorset.

Popped in for lunch with friends, I love this oldie worldie pub with oodles of character and history, the fairy lights are a lovely touch, the food was great, plenty of choice on the menu, we had the light Bite size, which was rather larger than expected, I asked for extra chutney which was brought to the table straight away.

Very much enjoyed our late lunch here. Young staff and manager were very friendly and helpful. Extremely good value for money, reasonable prices and big portions. We actually quite like the unique interior it’s cosy!

On our journey home from an overnight-stay in Bournemouth we decided to take a minor roads route back home rather than the direct main road route. This took us through quite a few small towns and villages. Our plan was to find a Farm Shop Café or a village / small town-centre café where we could get lunch: ideally a snack and a hot drink. We were over an hour into our journey when we saw the signs for Marcia’s Farm Shop and turned into what was a heavily pot-holed carpark. We then walked into the signposted barn noting that there was plenty of tables and chairs arranged in neat rows but no-one was sat there. There was another door into ‘The Shack’; inside was actually a full bar; like you would find in a pub. There were a few locals propping-up the bar, chatting and drinking draught beer. This is not what we had expected and we assumed that the ‘Marcia’s Farm Shop’ and ‘The Shack’ were one in the same business. There didn’t appear to be any farm produce on sale: other than, we assumed, the food offered in the menu. It was almost exactly 1pm when we were approached and welcomed by a pleasant lady. We asked about food, and she advised us to select a table and choose from the menu of snacks that were available, and that she would return to take our order. We studied the menu having ordered some tea and my Partner chose a fishfinger baguette, whereas I chose a toasted ham and cheese sourdough sandwich. The plates took a good 20-25 minutes to arrive from ordering, but freshly prepared food does take time. So, we sipped tea and amused ourselves with the help of a large (probably over-fed and under-exercised) old Labrador who constantly wandered and sniffed around the bar and seated areas. The dog then settled at our table once our food order arrived. This was not a serious issue for us (others however may dislike being ‘hounded’ by slobbering dogs while they eat their food). Both plates featured a colourful and tasty fresh dressed salad which was really good. My sandwich was really firm and crunchy with a generous helping of thick-cut ham and plenty of well-melted cheese, and a small portion of red cabbage coleslaw to go with the salad. It was really good and enjoyed. My Partner’s baguette featured homemade cod loin fishfingers and tartare sauce (both inside the baguette). The fish was a bit moist and insubstantial; despite being made from the loin. Cod can be like this and it is why we prefer the meatier haddock. The baguette also accompanied by a few crisps, but they were a really strange flavour for accompanying fish (reminded us of Oxo beef - but very artificial). Our food was on the whole good, generously portioned and very much welcomed, and it was good value.

We made a lot of use of the bakers during our stay in the town. All the bread and pastries and pasties we bought were excellent and very fresh.

Sunday roast was good ie.good selection of vegetables (blue cabbage and cauliflower were tasty, vegetables were not overcooked), generous portions of meat (I had beef which was a bit overcooked for me but it’s just me being a bit picky about beef. It was seasoned very well).Really enjoyed sticky toffee pudding. Good value for money - there was 2for1 deal for Sunday roast. Friendly and helpful service. Nice atmosphere and decor. Will definitely come back to check out the rest of the menu.

Six of us had lunch here. The food was good but they struggled to cope with a group of six people; three of us got our food promptly, then there was a long wait before two more were served, and the last poor soul had to wait even longer for his toastie while people who had come in and ordered after us got theirs. We didn't expect all six orders to arrive at the same time, but for one person not to be fed till some of their companions had long finished their food wasn't good. When the food did arrive it was tasty, hot and filling so we were happy with that. Best to come here in smaller numbers, methinks.
