I thought I’d written this few weeks back so apologies to owner. Walked in for late lunch 4 of us as it was a close pub to the famous gold hill. What a welcome from Dave the owner nothing too much trouble and seated us in a great spot. We got chatting about areas Essex and wareham and cloudy cider and how it’s made and he was such a knowledgeable friendly guy and a great sense of humour. Food was absolutely fabulous and tasty. I had fish in baguette others had pie and mash and faggots and mash all cooked to perfection and we would definitely recommend and we will be back Dave top man

Party of eleven, tables were moved to accommodate us, drinks bought at the bar and food ordered from a very extensive menu. We were not disappointed, the food came out from the kitchen all together, freshly cooked and hot. Very tasty. And we didn’t have to wait long. Who ever is running the kitchen, is clearly very organised. Well done. Good range of beers and a log fire burning.

I usually eat at the kings about twice a month , usually with my brother and his wife or with one of my mates . Love that the menu is changed regularly, my problem is that the menu is brilliant with very few things I would not eat . I had the fish cakes , chips and muddy peas , which was the first time I’ve had them , they were brilliant , my brother had the chilli and his wife fish and chips which they enjoyed . Well served by the lovely bar lady . A smile on her face all the time and could not of been more helpful . If you’re looking to eat in town then I can recommend the kings any time . Well done to all at the kings you’re doing a grand job . Thank you once again .

Popped in here early evening for dinner. The lady behind the bar was very pleasant, informing us that if we ordered burgers on a Thursday they came with a free drink. There was a big choice of different types o burgers. I chose the lamb and mint which was delicious. It came with fries and a rather lovely home made coleslaw. Will definitely visit again when we’re in the area.

My husband and I were out on a day trip to Gold Hill. On arrival we found it very busy (a good thing these times) there was a food market on. We decided to go into The King's Arms and very glad we did, we were greated by a lovely lady behind the bar she served us our drinks and took our food order. All with a lovely smile. We both chose the Sunday roast. My husband had the lamb I had the 3 meat roast. Wow when it came everything on the plate was fresh, well cooked and well presented so, so scrummie excellent value for money . Then it came to the pudding I wanted the rhubarb crumble but it had cinnamon in it sorry not for me but to my great surprise the manager came over to say the chef would cook me one with out. I have never had such good food and service "anywhere" thank you all. We will definitely be going again. The pub is family friendly and animal friendly.

My wife and our 2 well behaved dogs stopped off here for lunch and were pleasantly surprised. The new management have turned this place around from what was a drinking den full of all the grief that can attract, to an airy, well presented, spacious and clean pub serving great food. A friendly welcome awaits well behaved patrons and the atmosphere is friendly and hospitable. We were not rushed and were served a most delicious home made burger stuffed with Stilton. It was lush!! I would recommend a stop off next time you are in Shaftesbury. I would think it better to book ahead if you are taking a large party like a coach, as the meals are prepared and cooked to order. There is ample cheap parking adjacent to the pub. The machines weren’t accepting cards so cash was required. All in all a great experience and a full belly. Our dogs were very welcomed, definitely dog friendly!!

Located beside the A30 after the junction for Gillingham and on the way to Shaftesbury opposite the junction for Stour Row. There is plenty of parking and is worth getting there promptly or booking in advance as it is very popular. This is a favourite pub of mine where I go to eat on a regular basis. The menu is extensive with a great choice of starter, mains and desserts. This pub is owned by a Scotts couple so there is a Scottish influence in the menu such as haggis if you wish - one of my husband's favourites. The meals are well priced and are very filling. If you can manage to make it to the desserts, highly recommend the Belgian Waffle with two spoons to share as if you have had a main course and shared this dessert you will be fit to pop! This pub also does an excellent value £6 lunch Monday to Friday however get there early as it is very popular - again excellent value for money. Both staff and owners are lovely and very friendly, you will want to return at a later date. They also recognise you if you have been before. We went to Shaftesbury on a very hot and sunny day because I was a volunteer minibus driver for a group from Stanley Pearce House. Top Marks to Shaftesbury Tourist Information Centre for the voucher for two hours free parking for my minibus AND a voucher redeemable at most of the cafes in town for a free tea/coffee and a slice of cake. The Kings Arms is situated adjacent to the public car park. Despite the ambient heat, the interior was cool, clean and inviting. The decor suggested recent refurbishment. We sat in the main bar, but there was a separate room at one end of the bar if we’d wanted to sit there. We arrived just after 11, and noted that food wasn’t served until 12, but the very pleasant lady at the bar still took our food order with our drinks order, and our food arrived bang on the dot of 12. We both opted for steak and ale pie with mixed veg, one with chips and one with new potatoes. The plates were hot, the cutlery clean, and the food delicious and reasonably price. Free wifi. Spotless toilets. Staff and clientele were friendly and helpful. As we left, we noticed a separate games room, which appeared to have a skittle alley under the carpet. All in all, a very pleasant visit, and we will happily return. It would be really helpful if the licensee could get their menu onto the web.

I met with a friend on Wednesday, we decided to have lunch out and chose the Kings Arms. I ordered a baked potato with cheese & coleslaw and my friend ordered a cheese sandwich with coleslaw and a side order of chips. My baked potato was dry, cold on one side, small with cheese grated on the top. The plates were cold as well as the potato, not even hot enough to melt the cheese. A small ramekin with the coleslaw in and a small handful of mixed salad leaves. Very poor for nearly £6. My friends sandwiches were made with ordinary sliced loaf, cheap. Margarine and grated cheese, small ramekin of coleslaw and the small handful of mixed leaves, again £6, too expensive. The service was poor and the glasses were not the cleanest either. Then to add insult to injury the card machine was not working. We were not asked how the food was or if we'd enjoyed it. Not impressed and certainly won't be going back.

This pub has come a long way since I first visited it in the late 1970s.It is spacious, spotlessly clean and offers a warm welcome. On our lunchtime visit last week the pub was quiet, with only one other family in the restaurant. People dining elsewhere were missing a treat. My husband chose fish and chips, which he said was light and well-cooked, and I had lasagne, which came with a side salad and garlic bread.Often pub lasagne is greasy and so hot that it burns the mouth, but this was perfectly cooked. The minced beef was tender, the salad crisp and fresh, and the garlic bread generous - three slices. We were too full for puddings, which was a shame, but we will be back when we are hungrier to enjoy a two-course meal. This pub offers excellent value for money, well-cooked dishes, reasonably priced drinks and a friendly lady behind the bar and waiting at table - nothing was too much trouble for her. There are some wonderful old photos of Shaftesbury and other scenes of Dorset on the walls, which provide interest for tourists and locals alike.

Food was fine, service was a bit lacking especially having to ask for the bill three times, and I was a bit dissappointed in loss of atmosphere after being told it was the best place around.

This was the second time we had gone in and a short while later gone out again,we will not be going a third time. The toilets were disgusting and not useable.Very unfriendly place,we orderd a drink each and felt that was enough by the way we were dealt with. No one seems to care or be bothered you could sit there for hours and no one would bother about you or ask if you were ok.Terrible place.

We had eaten at this venue a couple of times before, probably a decade or more ago so perhaps I was naive to believe that a reasonable quality of food would still persist. On arrival we took a seat at a table, only two other tables in use. A friendly young lady took our food order and delivered our diet Cokes. Then we waited for our soup starter. After about fifteen minutes it arrived. It was hot and tasted nice. Another couple received their main course around the same time and they left quite quickly and there seemed to be a lot left.Once finished our empty bowls were taken away and we waited and we waited. After some fifteen minutes I challenged the waitress and she said it was on its way. After another five minutes she appeared with our two orders of sausage and mash and onion gravy. The potato was quite lacking in form and was mushy rather than a rich inviting mash. There were three sausages. As we began my wife asked whether mine was hot, well no it was not. 'How about yours?" No.I then went to the bar and told the bar tender that I wished to settle for the drinks and starter as we had waited too long for the main course and that now it had arrived it was not hot. She then had a problem with the till so I asked what we owed and she told me £10.50. With a £10 note n my hand I told her she would have to settle for that. She offered an apology and told me the chef was on his own. This is an excuse I have heard before in other places, when will people recognise that if they are going to open for business they must get temps in if the chef is alone.A very bad experience and I would not revisit this establishment again.

My family and I turned up at the kings arms on a saturday lunchtime to find it quiet, this should have set the alarm bells ringing but we were relived to know we wouldn't have to wait long...we didn't wait long, not long enough to cook the egg in the gammon! The egg white was still transparent in the middle, the yolk raw and all this despite the edges being burnt to a cinder, whilst it was sent back our burgers arrived, they were clearly from a tin and the buns were wet! To our total disbelief the chips were not cooked either! We demanded our money back and got it without question, not a murmur...my twelve year old could cook better! Poor Shaftesbury!

This is a superior place to eat and always busy. They offer a £5 lunch with a £6 chef's lunch special. Dinner is always beautifully cooked and presented with daily specials. The Sunday carvery is really popular with booking advised. The attention to detail is impressive and for a pub this is up there with some more expensive restaurants. We eat here regularly and they can accommodate singles right through to large parties with ease. Don't drive past without trying this pub as you wont know what you've missed

This place is right by the main car park and promotes morning coffees, etc. We went in around 11:45am and there were locals who stared as we entered, all wrapped around their ale pints, women too - maybe it was a funeral - not sure. My husband held the door open for one of the barmaids, who acknowledged his good manners with a snarl, yes a snarl. Crikey we should have gone then. Anyway the other barmaid had disappeared from the bar and I waited to order coffee and cake/desserts. Other locals entered. We waited. She returned and I asked for 2 coffees. Her reply was "We are too bus.......Sorry the machine is not working". She had realised what she was saying halfway through and quickly tried to cover it up. We left immediately.

Pleasant looking pub from the approach, and a decent selection of beers, but we were served the meanest ham sandwich I've ever seen. A single slice of that super-thin ham, which didn't even cover the whole round of the sandwich. There was nothing for it but to move the meat onto one of the quarters and leave the rest of the bread.Astonishingly this place displays a Which? badge for, er, good hospitality.

Nice pub-restaurant in this historic town, right by the main car park.Sunday roast for just £8, which was quite good value. The meat was not as hot as it could be, but that's to be expected on a carvery at 1pm. The tuna/sweetcorn jacket for £3.95 was great, although would have benefitted from a salad garnish.Service included a young teenager, who did a great, conscientious job.

Great pub will off the beaten Dorset tourist track. Well worth a visit! Good food and drink selection with a sun trap of a pub garden. The “Basket” and “Burger” deals are very good and great portio
