We visited the Crown after having a meal locally. We wished we hadn’t. We like to sit out when we can, even when it’s a bit chilly. The pub wouldn’t turn the heaters on. Apparently, the button was broken. (Here’s a tip: get it fixed!) Then we were fleeced in broad daylight at the bar. We should have left but good manners say you should pay for what you’ve asked for even when you are having your wallet picked! Two small Proseccos & a pint of Two Hoots - £21! We were probably charged the heating bill for the pub for the whole night! The owners of this pub need to get real. If I could have given it a zero rating I would, but Trip Advisor don’t let you. We won’t be visiting again!

We always ask if we can be accommodated as we nearly always have a big party and they’re always obliging. Very friendly service that comes quite quickly considering there were 12 of us on a Saturday teatime. We had no complaints and completely enjoyed the experience. Try it.

We had just come back from holiday and need to eat so we called some of our family and booked a table for 7. The menu had all sorts of offers on it and so the ordering process took a short while but having done all that the food turned up extremely quickly and was well received by everyone. The staff were very very helpful and we enjoyed the whole package. We’ll go back.

This was one of the first pubs I used to go in as a kid and so it has fun memories. Amazingly, the layout hasn’t changed much but it is still a very enjoyable place to visit. A group of us went in later on on a Saturday and it was quite busy. It was a great atmosphere though and seems to be a real locals pub. a standard range of good drinks at reasonable prices mean it is a good option to visit in Horwich. Nice service as well.

My wife and I called in for lunch 23, February, 22. We waited 50 minutes for two steak pies and chips, the centre of the pie was stone cold??? The waitress took the cold food away, and said won't be long, after another 20 minutes she appeared with two new plates of food, this time very hot,but the pies had been microwaved to death, the pastry was like concrete, un chewable, WOULD NOT RECOMMEND,

Me and my husband had lunch, we ordered steak and ale pie. After waiting 50 minutes the meal came the pie was lovely but stone cold in the middle. We returned them and 30 later we got a fresh pie that had been blast heated to the point I couldn't get my knife in the pastry and the meat was wielded to the pastry. We wish we had asked for a refund and left. It was horrible. WILL NEVER EAT HERE AGAIN

After a walk on the pike my family and I stopped in the Crown for some lunch… Everything was a bit weird, no cooking smells and the food seemingly being delivered from somewhere else. I don’t know where but someone needs to tell them that nachos don't really work in the microwave. And tomato ketchup with basil in it is not the same as salsa. The lasagna was awful, again plainly microwaved from a packet. My chicken and ham was a joke, piece of chicken that as I was cutting it felt rubbery with a piece of stringy bacon on it. I refused to eat it, by this time we just wanted to leave and eat somewhere else. As it turns out this was made impossible by the food poisoning I picked up, presumably from the ‘sour cream’ lumped onto the nachos. Two days of violent reaction and only just starting to keep food down. Avoid avoid avoid, awful food at any cost just isn’t worth it.

I left this place for a while as standards had slipped massively and the food had become inedible and the beer undrinkable. Since reopening after lockdown the standards seem to have vastly improved. I had the steak and ale pie which was good. The beer was back to how I remembered it years ago. They’ve had an employment drive too with new staff who are going above and beyond too.

Food used to be great in here but sadly standards are slipping. Last two times we’ve been in here the food had been inedible. Really need to review the cooking standards. Burgers are rock hard (assume overcooked). We will be back to drink as it’s a great pub but food becoming terrible, and they’re competing with the bridge up the road who now do tremendous food and serve after 7pm.

The service for food was farcical, couldn't order because there was a lot of orders placed previously. Wouldn't take any orders, the landlady was complaining because it was a funeral and they shouldn't have been eating just drinking! She obviously didn't realise we were attending the funeral gathering. The waitress was so rude, plonking a fish and chips meal down, 'want tartare sauce or not!!' They even ran out of the fish, and Talisker whisky, at the prices they charged, it was dearer for soft drinks than alcoholic ones they must have made a fortune. Ridiculous and not a good atmosphere after a sad occasion. Only got one on the rating because you can't give non.

The Sausage and Mash is abysmal ... they really need to take it off the menu. I suspect the sausages are frozen, whatever they are they are tasteless. When you go to a pub, you expect decent sausage ... these were the sort that you get deep fried at the chippy. Huge portion of mash, but tasteless and watery ... nowhere near fresh. Gravy out if a packet. If all you want is large portions, without a nod to quality or taste, then this is the place for you. It made me feel poorly..

Came here again as it’s a local favourite and their new menu is fantastic. Really good price too about £7 a main meal. I had the steak and ale pie, my friend had the new spicy mac and cheese. All delicious. My only frustration with this place is that the kitchen closes at 7pm. Midweek this is ridiculous. We only get home at half 6 and sometimes think we will go across for a quick bite to eat but it’s too late when we get over there. They’re losing so much business by doing it and there’s no other good pubs which do food within walking distance either so they could rinse the local market! If any of the management are reading this please consider this for the future.

Attended the pub on sat 06 July 2019 at 6 pm. We were a party of 4 including grandparent and 10 year old boy. Foul language started at 7:15 ...a quiet word sorted it out. Mentioned the issue to the bar staff on our way out at about 8 pm, but they didn't seem to take much notice. A visit to loos a few minutes later involved another drunk who overheard my conversation with the bar staff and was of the opinion that children shouldn't be allowed. This idiot was kicking off on front off my little boy. What a big , brave man he was. The Crown pub isnt a pub that is set up for families. Steer of this pub if you you have children. There are other pubs where foul language is not tolerated by the landlord. I will never visit this pub again.

We had been for a walk up Rivington and decided to pop in here for a drink and food. We ordered a lime and soda, hot chocolate, beer, chips and Sunday roast at the bar. The young lad had to ask me how much cordial to pour into the glass, initially pouring half a pint of cordial for a pint of soda! There were no issues with the beer and he said he'd bring the hot chocolate over. A few minutes later he popped over say that they'd run out of hot chocolate but no one had told him. He was quick to refund the price difference. The chips and roast arrived quickly. The chips were decent and hot. The Sunday roast was OK. The meat was dry, the veg had been boiled within an inch of its life and the gravy was bland, but nonetheless it was edible. All in all, if you want a cheap pint and place to watch sport this is the place for you. Staff were friendly enough and it is a decent size inside. But it isn't a place I'd what to eat at again.

We visit this pub 2-3 times per month as we are not very local. It’s a lovely pub, well decorated, clean and plenty of room to sit. There are plenty of ales to choose from and there is a nice sitting out area albeit on a main road. Unfortunately we regularly get ignored at the bar even when there is no one else there and when we try to attract attention we get muttered at and called by the bar staff (one of our party still at the bar overheard as I walked off). Such a shame, they obviously only like to serve locals. Don’t have this problem at the Bob Smithy!

Firstly I was Shocked at being charged nearly £1.50 for soda water.... but I paid it anywayWe ordered...Nachos to start....they were very well presented and tasty too.Mains two cajun chicken sandwiches, one on a baguette the other on brown bread and scampi n chips. After a wait of nearly 30 minutes the waitress came to the table to apologise for the delay saying they were waiting for the bread to defrost, my response was to toast it, which they did. When the meals came the chicken was very overcooked and dry, inedible really, and thete were no cajun spices in sight, a refund for both sandwiches was promptly given. We didn't fuss too much but the scampi was over cooked and the salad had seen better days. The waitresses apologised and said the management would be informed, I do hope this was the case. I will come back and try again and I genuinely hope to be able to write a more positive review, I believe everywhere deserves a second chance.....

The owners have freshened up the stone work and extended the offering to include a fantastic outside seating area with shrubbery, patios heaters and large modern parasols.Inside the décor is very clean and there is a warm, relaxing ambience. There is a good mix of casual drinkers, group and family diners. The menu has those firm pub grub favourites. I chose bangers and mash in a red wine gravy, the dish is plentiful and piping hot. For dessert there is a sweet trolley with selected dishes, on this occasion the fudge cake was a must and was very moist.I only noticed the specials board once I'd ordered and the options looked well priced.Very pleasant and attentive staff on duty. It's the first time I have been to the venue and it's safe to say I will definitely be coming again. My bill came in at around £14.00 including a large glass of Rose. The pub is sectioned off with various size tables and some comfortable booths.Overall I would recommend you bring your family/group/friends to this great little place in a quaint setting. Looks amazing from the outside but on entering it was clear it had been "interior designer overload" everything is deliberately mismatched and clashing, not to my taste. Never mind the main event was the food. However, a quick glance at the menu revealed mundane ordinary pub grub and that was so disappointing. They served their chips in minature chip frying baskets. Why? After saying that the food was lovely when it came. I can certainly recommend the liver and onions. There used to be thousands of hostelries like this up and down the land - now a declining breed: rambling 'hotel' dating from the evidence of the building style from around a century ago, give or take. Presumably a tied house to the Holt Brewery as there were six of their real ales on, plus a token guest. Not a particular fan of Holt's beers, but these were well enough kept.Food is 'pub grub', with a local twist: the likes of rag pudding, black pudding and plenty of mushy peas featuring. Portions were fairly substantial; and prices very reasonable - a fiver for mains seemed the usual charge.Nothing special about it, nothing bad. Clientele when we dropped in entirely middle-aged or elderly. We might be inclined to dismiss such places, but suspect once they have all been either turned in to wine bars or demolished to make room for a Tesco Metro or Sainsbury's Local we will miss them.
