Went for a carvery lunch. Whilst waiting in the queue, a woman came along with her young son and the dirty plate and cutlery he had used and asked for a second helping of the veg. I told her she would need to get a clean plate as I didn’t want her spooning the veg onto the dirty plate using the same serving spoons that I then had to use. She then asked a member of staff if this was the case and they stated she could use the same dirty plate for extra helpings and that’s what she did!!! I told the member of staff that that was disgusting but she just ignored me! I will not be rushing back.

Ordered a take out delivery Saturday 3rd feb the only thing edible was the meat,roast potatoes must have been on display for hours couldn’t cut through them when finally did potato inside was practically non existent Rock hard shell 😡 Yorkshire puds rock hard, mash full of lumps, veg hard never again complete waste of my money 😡 never again 😡

The pizzas are unreal. Never knew they served all you can eat breakfast! Will deffo be back to try those.

I was in this evening for a cavery the food was lovely however the " assistant manager " ( slightly large woman with red hair and glasses) thought it would be a great idea to belittle the young waiter( stocky with purple/ pink hair and tattoos) for setting up a table for a pretty large booking. The tone the way she spoke to him was so unprofessional and had no care that customers were present. When the waiter turned around and stood up for himself she became more loud to try and over power him then proceeded to say " I'm the assistant manager you do as I say" the young waiter notice me standing behind so proceeded to say "let's take it outside as customers are present" the " assistant manager" then storms past me to tell the guy on the bar. The young waiter came to find us after the disagreement and apologise for her actions and how it shouldn't of happened even though it shouldn't be him apologising! He's a credit to your team shame about the manager as I personally think he'll soon leave if it happens regularly.

Diner was aufew roasters where hard as allways and overpriced for carvery 7.99 for widweek carvery is no way worth 5 pound if that not as good as tobys better food and not much more than maidmaid charge now its gone down hill and won't be returning tobys it is from now no wonder had people telling me its gone down hill there right

Absolutely abysmal. We’ve gone to the mermaid many times but unfortunately we won’t be returning. The carvery was absolutely disgusting, everything was dry and tasted like it was made last weekend. It wasn’t edible and we had to leave most of the food. I’m surprised the place is still open serving that food. Some of the staff were lovely and some were pretty hideous. They did refund the meals that we didn’t eat so I guess that’s the only positive

Food was terrible .bbq chicken burger and chips a hand full of chips cold bread bun and dont no what the chef done to the road kill chicken.son got a pizza which was like cardboard . Told the waitress the food was garbage .wont be going back anytime soon

Had family up from down south and brought them to the mermaid for lunch. Everything was cooked perfectly. Carvery was beautiful. Excellent service from all staff. Very enjoyable experience

Visited last month for a carvery. I chose the beef and unfortunately it was cold and full of gristle. Vegetables were old and overcooked. The roast potatoes were nice but that's the only good thing I can say. Visited again today, to pick up 2 meat breakfasts via the too good to go app. Woman at the carvery was pretty snotty with me. Accused me of trying to collect my order without proving that I've paid. She told me I had to go to the bar and show my code. Previously I haven't needed to do this, and the staff have been really nice. I've just swiped my code at the counter on collection. But not today. Anyway I got home and my order was wrong. I'd been given a meat breakfast and a vegetarian breakfast. So not only have I had to deal with a grotty woman, who accused me of thieving but then they have ripped me off! I hope the person who had ordered the vegetarian breakfast checked their food before they left. I can't imagine anyone being happy with meat when they ordered a vegetarian meal. The breakfast wasn't the best. It had overly sweet waffles on top which made everything taste of sugar. Also the egg was full of shell. Totally disappointed with The Mermaid. We won't be back.

Took our Great Nephew out a carvery tea. The carvery was fabulous, lots of nice meat and a selection of fresh vegetables. Littl ‘un had a carvery too and loved it! Kids pudding of strawberries and ice cream was just right. To top it off, the staff were amazing - really friendly and amazing with our Great Nephew. A really great experience!

Paid for a sit in full english carvery an also a takeaway to take to my mother in law in james cook hossy. Could eat all I wanted on sit in carvery but told bacon or sausage on takeaway one or other not both. I got a refund walked out an went to toby carvery accros rd from hospital. The lady manager is very rude an abrupt I wont be going back ever and i use to visit 3 times a week. Now go to toby carvery mboro....

Came in with my partner for a breakfast at the begining of the month, meal was plentiful however had to wait for eggs tobe cooked and when they eventually arrived there was only 6 of them and 5 people waiting. Bacon made streaky bacon look clean, spent more time cutting fat and rind off than eating meat. Overall you want a cheap meal with plenty of nasty head to the mermaid, you will only visit once!

Went for the carvery and was very disappointed.Had to tick what we wanted for the carvery and I didnt get what I orded. Put stuff on my plate that I didn't even like.Came swimming in gravy. Dont understand why they couldnt put the gravy in a jug and put it on the table so we can put it on our selves.Roast potatoes were very dry.Nice and friendly staff just poor carvery.

Been here previously and never had any issues. However went yesterday for husbands birthday and came away £50 plus lighter and not happy. Booked for 1.15 which is exactly the time we arrived. Approached by a staff member who looked around and said”bare with me only two of us on at the moment “. Not good when the next family arrived almost within a few minutes and proceeded to stand directly behind us in the foyer area.Asked staff twice if we could at least order drinks having being seated for 10 mins. Again she apologised saying only 2 on. Eventually ordered two carvery meals, two pizzas and a wrap. Arrived 45 mins later! No sauces on carvery meals, veg missing, chips hard, pizza had a 3inch dough edge, basically not enjoyable. Explained to staff on leaving not happy, but neither of them really commented. Won’t be returning. Appreciate issues with COVID but this was an issue with insufficient staff at what was a very busy pub.

For context, we visited here after the COVID restrictions had been relaxed but people not eating or drinking in a bar/restaurant had to wear a mask at all times.We have used carveries in the past and the formula has always been the same:a) A waiter takes you to you table and explains what is available and gives you a menub) The waiter then takes your drinks order and delivers them to your tablec) You go to the servery and chooses from a mixture of turkey, pork, beef and lamb (and in some cases duck).c) After your main course the waiter will offer afters and/or coffee and bring that to your table.d) At the end the waiter will bring you your total bill and take your money or card.Here:You are pointed to a table which has no menus.You go to the bar and buy your drink and pay for it.The bar sells you a carvery ticketYou go to the carvery and choose from turkey, pork beef - but you can have the mint sauce as if you had chosen lamb.If you want afters or coffee you go back to the bar...Throughout none of the staff had masks on while working in the public areas.The good thing was the price. Under £7 (seven!) for two carveries.Quality of food was very poor, quality of service was worse.

If you are looking for a reasonably priced meal with basic quality then this is fine. Staff are nice and carvery & pizzas good value. The place needs a bit of money spending on it. Reckon good for family with children where you’ll get value for money.

As a visitor to the area the Mermaid sounded to be a good bet for a carvery but unfortunately it turned out to be not up to the standard of other establishments. The management could learn a thing or two from competitors a few miles up the road in Thornaby. Admittedly we attended the Mermaid at 20,00 and the place was almost deserted but one still expects value for money but this did not happen. The food was very much dried up with the meats being of inferior quality, grisly and tasteless. The young lass (Fran) who attended us was most helpful and really the only good thing about our visit. The usual answer of course from management in answer to this negative review is to say ..”why didn’t we bring it to staff’s attention” ....one shouldn’t have to and in any case, after a hard days travelling argument and discussion aren’t really the order of the day when tired....sorry Mermaid ....we shall not be returning. fran gets 5 stars

With the government paying for half your meal thought we should take advantage of it so went to The Mermaid for a carvery.Due to Covid it was not as it used to be I booked a table via their website on arriving we were met at the door and taken to our table. You still order from the bar as normal as they have screens in place you have to give your table number and you don’t get a carvery ticket as before on going for your carvery you just give your table number your meat and veg are put on your plate by the server you just tell them what you want and collect your plate at the end, so pretty well organised.As for the food it was very good the beef was very tender and the veg was cooked well and nice and hot and at half price what’s not to like.

we've been twice during August. The first time we had carvery which was really nice & the second we had pizzas which were excellent. The staff here were all so friendly & helpful & explained the process from entering the pub, but without bossing us about like in other places we've been to during the pandemic. Its been some time since i last visited The Mermaid. My friend and i had booked for 1pm on 6th August. Actually we could have got away without booking as it had very few people in. no doubt they are full Monday-Wednesday on the special prices throughout August.The staff were very friendly, showed us to a table and we paid for the meal and soft drinks.5 minutes later we were directed to the carvery.it wasnt self service, though i wonder if thats due to current regulations. anyhow i had a large one and my friend had a regular.The food was very nice, very good sized portions and reasonably priced. Everyone social distancing.A good experience overall

Took my mam for her first outting , safety measures in place ,didn't like not being able to help yourself,as I got way too many peas and carrots than I would have put on ,gravy just dripped everywhere, what a mess.and the roast potatoes were so dry, didn't seem to be much off the price than usually,no bill so could not see what was off , big no no were the toilets,they were filthy , muck all down the doors , surely they should have had a beep clean .

First visit since the UK lock down was lifted. The pub is now Covid-19 compliant with many new processes put in place to 'Stay Safe'. My family and I booked our table online and followed the pubs guidelines. Everything is socially distanced and we felt secure during our visit. The service was fine, the carvery staff were friendly and efficient, and the food was excellent.

First breakfast since lockdown Was so delicious and I felt super safe with the COVID-19 safety measures Would definitely recommend and will be back very soon !

Just been to the Mermaid for lunch after trying to get in Saturday I didnt even bother when I saw the crowd outside, but I'm glad I tried coming in on a quieter day today. Great post lockdown experience was greeted at the door by two staff who were very lovely and shown to my table, new rules in place made us feel very safe, the girl at the bar was very polite and chatty she asked us to leave a review. Your no longer allowed to plate your own Carvery which was strange but still allowed as much as you like the chef serving us was very helpful I think his name was dave. Cavery was fab as usual loving the new style of the Mermaid.

Came yesterday with my daughter we were greeted by a very polite smiley young lady. Nice to see the place is doing great to keep everyone safe, lots of cleaning and sanitising going on, our details were took we sanitised and she shown us to our table with the rules explained to us. The young girl managed everything perfect going to each table making sure everyone was okay and keeping the carvery line going. The carvery was beautiful the chefs were polite and chatty too, the girl at the bar served us rather quick but kept chatting to A chef whilst doing so almost missed a drink off my order in doing so. Great visit great food high standards of cleaning 5*

Before today It had been more than a year since I ate here and my how things have changed, at 5pm on a Friday evening the place should have been heaving so I should have known that something was wrong when I arrived and was able to park anywhere in the once busy carpark. Once inside I had the thought that there were probably not enough customers to be paying the wages of the staff. The owners of the chain have obviously taken their eye off the ball at this location because the food was awful, there were four of us and I am sad to say that none of us was at all happy with our meal. I hope the owners take note and sort this place out as they need bums on seats and at the moment the local competition are in a different leauge

After reading the reviews we thought we would give it a go as the carveries in Middlesbrough were all packed and had huge lines waiting to pay or get to the food. The mermaid had waiting customers but it soon reduced and from entering to having a plate of food took only 10 minutes.The carvery was good but there was little beef left at 14.30 which was disappointing. Other than that the food was excellent, hot and very well cooked with the roast potatoes being the star of the show.Service was friendly and efficient throughout which in these types of restaurant is not always the case. Great value for money and we will definitely return.

What a fantastic meal staff always friendly. Kitchen staff have been great 3 lovely lads had a little chat when getting the meal.

Went to the mermaid for lunch and chose the carvery , because I’m watching carbs and red meat I ask could I have an extra portion of turkey instead of one of the other meats. I was told no you only get one portion of any one of the meats but you can pick 2. Where is the logic, 2 portions are 2 portions and I’m sure the turkey would have been cheaper than the beef I got turkey and beef and gave the beef to my friend for her dog.perhaps the management can be a bit more flexible. Don’t think I’ll be going back.

Came here for a family meal we are newTo the marske area and we weren’t disappointed the staff were very friendly and helpful the place was kept clean and tidy, one of my children is a very fussy eater but the waitress with long brown hair I didn’t catch her name but she was great in explaining the menu to me as we had never been before. We were served quickly most of us had Carvery which was great to have a selection of different meats veg was all fresh and the carver was patient with the children getting there meals, burgers and pizzas were cooked in a reasonable amount of time. over all a happy experience can’t wait to visit again especially the children for the bottomless ice creams!

Went to a family meal for my girlfriends cousins 18th and ended up leaving before we had even ate. We went to the bar to order our drinks and we're asked for ID as usual, then when we got back to our table we were asked for ID once again which we found very odd, a few of the females in the family have baby faces which warrants them being asked for ID regularly but to be asked twice was a little frustrating. We then started to drink our drinks and try to enjoy ourselves then another member of staff approached and asked for ID once again which made a lot of us feel very awkward and uneasy, a staff member was seen standing outside looking through the window besides us making sure the one member that didnt have her ID but was 18 regardless wasn't drinking any of the drinks on the table. This prompted one of our members to go and complain to the manager which resulted in her being swore at by the manager and threatened to have every drink taken from our table that we had already purchased that was the final straw for us and we left as soon as our drinks were finished. Worst family meal I have ever been to thanks to very terrible staff. Never going there again!

Prawn cocktail was average but the carvery and derive was brilliant. The chef carving the meat was great. Very chatty and generous with the serving and the ladies serving our table were lovely. Thank you!

went on christmas day for 3 course meal - cost £45 each (180 for the 4 of us) , mediocre meal not much different from normal sunday carvery. lots of waiting staff hanging around but one bloke on the carvery so long queue. advertised as christmas party but nothing like one just noisy

5 of us were booked in here for the 12oclock sitting for the 3 course Christmas lunch menu,we were seated promptly,and served our starters within in few minutes,then we were sent to to carvery to get our mains,there was a choice of 3 meats ,and we were given a very generous portion,Yorkshire pudding,pigs in blankets,and just about every vegetable you could wish for,all piping hot ,there was plenty of gravy and a selection of sauces,plus vegetarian choices,by the time we had,gotten through our mains we all realised that we had no room for our desserts,so we asked Rachael who I think was the manager,if we could possibly have them as a carry out,she was only to happy to oblige,and had all our desserts put into containers so that we could take them home for later.Condidering the amount of people that were dining I think the staff did an amazing job and we were not disappointed.A big THANK YOU to all the staff at the mermaid .

I visited The Mermaid to watch the live music and have food & drinks on Boxing Day with family from abroad, it was ruined by 25 yobs dancing on tables, banging on the roof singing ‘cotton aye joe’ for 2 hours, even the bar staff found it amusing by standing there videoing them. Lack of management as nothing was done about this, poor girl singing must have her confidence dashed by this. Awful place, will never return.

Had a meet up with friends, not a lot of people in so didn’t take long to get our carvery . However I was disappointed with the meat as it was cut so thinly (shavings)veg was over cooked and roasted potatoes were over done and so hard. Very disappointed ☹️ What’s happened ? Years ago you got thick sliced meat and veg was done to perfection. It was embarrassing to have raved about the food to my friends and it wasn’t up to scratch! Buck your ideas up !! Please

Been comein to this place for years and now its even better NOT JUST A CARVERY fresh pizzas and burgers

Fairly quiet for a Saturday teatime, but the food was hot and fresh. Selection of 4 roasts and fairly uninspiring veg. In the carvery. Although still reasonable the price seems to be higher every time we go, and what’s this about charging extra for pigs in blankets?

A very busy environment at lunchtime,however plenty of tables.

Went to the mermaid for my birthday with 10 other people and I guess if you just like to stuff your face it's perfect for you. Plenty to choose from with for types of meat and lots of veg even chips if you want them but I must say it's all a bit tasteless and the beef was down right crap as it was that stringy and tough you could hardly cut into it. Eldest grandson had the other Sunday option which was pizza that looked ok but at £10.99 a little on the expansive side for pub grub I thought. Sunday lunch was £8.49 that isn't bad but not a patch on the gables pub in hellion at £7.99

Often go to local Stonehouse so whilst on holiday was pleased to come across The Mermaid.The carvery was excellent with plenty of meat and a good selection of tasty vegetables.

One of the best carveries i have visited, all the meats succulent and a great choice of veg , and a very friendly carver.

Popped in for our tea. The barmaid who served us was really unfriendly and miserable, although she was smiling and jokey with the big gang of lads who were served in front of us, she was so miserable when she served us! Even when I made some daft friendly comment she just stared at me with a bored, unimpressed look on her face and didn't reply. It's a shame as customer service is always half the experience and it's off-putting when the staff are funny with you.

I visited The Mermaid with my family as always. My 8 year old daughter dropped her plate and burned her hand on the gravy. She was obviously very distressed and in a lot of pain. The kitchen manager, Nathan Oakley, took her and immediately ran her hand under cold water for ten minutes. He was amazing; he talked to her, calmed her down and was able to keep any injury she had to a minimum. Thank you Nathan for everything.

Went for Sunday lunch. There was lots of choice and was lovely and hot. Service was brilliant really enjoyed it. Will be going again

We visited with the family for evening meal. The children ordered pizzas and the adults carvery. Although it was not busy 5pm on a Wednesday the queue for the carvery was long. The children’s pizza arrived with the first couple of adults still queuing for carvery. It took 15-20 to be served with the second couple of adults queuing almost as long. The result was the family had to eat in shifts which was not good.

First visit to The Mermaid, very large pub has a carvery, standard menu and a Pizza station.

Called at The Mermaid for tea on our way back from a day out had not been for some time as the last visit was a disappointment tough meat stewed veg and roast potatoes that were cinders, however things have improved between us we chose beef, turkey and gammon all were very good there was a better selection of veg all very good and the roast potatoes were perfect. The kids went for 12” pepperoni pizza they also were quite nice and for £8 for two very reasonable.

Been twice last month for carvery, no stuffing both occasions told have to wait 20 mins for more, why not have it ready for peak times, went for breakfast and the lady in front asked for more eggs member of staff went in kitchen to ask and we clearly heard “they’ve had 3 trays the f**kin gannets” ! , had to wait to actually order the breakfast at bar while two members of staff carried on gossiping for 6 minutes I think the customers get in the way in the Mermaid!

It's years since I've been here and wasnt sure what to expect with a brewery menu as opposed to home cooked pub grub but we weren't disappointed.

For £5.99 nothing to complain about. Choice of four roast meats and all the veg you want. We found nothing wrong with the veg, all of it was cooked spot on and tasted great. The meat is obviously well done since it’s sat under heat lamps, which can’t be helped to serve warm. Friendly service and no problems at all.

Took family for tea. Good food, plenty of choice, gammon, beef, turkey and pork. Loads of vegetables. Pleasant staff. Very enjoyable.

My partner and I took my Daughter and 2 sons to the Mermaid for an early evening meal.

Three of us called in quite late for a carvery. The food is nothing fancy but plenty of good quality meat and a good variety of veg. We were a bit late but the sauces had already been removed, mint sauce horseradish apple sauce etc. No napkins to be seen anywhere. The staff were all friendly and helpful.

Went today (bank holiday Monday) just for a few drinks. I ordered a pint of Carling and Claire ordered a pint of dark fruits which cost £8.

Average food. Really poor customer service. Took an hour to come and when it did they had missed a dessert off from the order. Thought the woman that took the order asked if I wanted it to arrive after the main meals. Mistakes happen not a problem. However when half an hour later it still hadn’t arrived and we asked again if the food was coming we were told “you didn’t pay for the dessert”! Only had a card receipt so hadn’t picked it up at time.

Great pub another one done out a few years ago good selection of food and fine ales, also has its own pizza oven great carvery if you fancy a roast however sundays are a bit more, also unlimited ice cream for the kids

Took the wife for food she loves it every time we go it just keeps getting better the staff are nice and friendly all ways get a warm welcome place is clean and tidy the out side tables and flowers pots are amazing lovely beer garden

Myself, wife and mum called in for lunch after a nearby favourite restaurant was full. My 80yr old mum likes fish and chips so we all chose the same.

I put comment regarding poor foodin October and got a appoligy and told my name will go into a book to get another meal. Iwas not given a time limit so phoned last Sunday to be told there is no book and only give out vouchers . SO BE WARNED

Out with my Grandson Kadyn, and the Welsh Bhoys, Pat, Adam, Kai n Isaac. Very nice indeed, place was choca bloc. Good food nice staff, very helpful, clean tidy and value for money. Plenty of parking spaces at rear. Would highly recommend. 👍

The worst eating experience I have ever had. Food cold and inedible. What else can I say except that I hope someone takes note of this and tackles the problems.

The carvery was lovely with fresh vegetables,fluffy mash,lashings of gravy, but the toilets were stinking of urine, loo paper on the floor, wee on the seats, just horrifying.

First visit to The Mermaid for a while. Despite its refurbishment it still much the same, well all except the prices which have crept up slightly. Nevertheless, my wife and I popped in late afternoon recently and enjoyed the visit. We both had the carvery and I have to say the meat was extremely well cooked and delicious. All in all, good value for money and we will try not to leave it as long to out next visit.

We had heard that the mermaid had gone downhill, but as our son was attending a party we decided to eat there for convenience.

Visited the mermaid today as the new menu has just started and was very pleased with what was presented. The new pudding of raspberry and white chocolate mousse was too die for so moist and tasty and the cavery was delicious. Staff all cheerful and kind. Will definitely return

Called in to the mermaid for the carvery.noticed the numbers had fallen for tea time.ordered at the bar ,miserable surly staff.took our drinks and sat at a sticky table.bar area floor was also sticky.took our tickets to carvery area.very grubby looking miserable young man on carvery.food was tasteless and not very hot..on leaving went to toilets .also sticky and filthy.toilet rolls on floor, as holders all smashed.we have had a few Xmas day meals over the years.and breakfasts and countless carveries.this used to be a cracking family pub with lovely staff,but it is absolutely disgusting now.enough is enough. ,and the mermaid us firmly off our calling in list.why bother when there are much better pubs in the area like the long acres at Skelton, or the iron stone miner in Guisborough. Sort this pub out or shut it down .

Had a lovely carvery at lunchtime between 12/2. Place clean and tidy, food looked lovely, staff lovely. Jo was welcoming and very helpful and friendly, good service. Would deffo go back, good value for money . x

Went Sunday three thirty for carvery as me and my Daughter had been to Tesco all day fund raising for Help The Hero's and wanted a hot meal

Late booking for a family meal, we were late for our meal & it wasn’t a problem at all. Shown straight to our table and explained how to order. Bar service was friendly polite and chatty. The carver was great with the kids and patient with us helping the kids and holding two plates. Once seated and eating we didn’t have to leave our seats again as we had brilliant table service from a lovely waitress who was fantastic with our children and great with us nothing was too much.

Been to the mermaid for tea tonight food was lovely and lynn was very helpful polite and kid and assisted with our left overs so we were able to take them home would highly recommend going there for tea x

I don't even know where to start. This is a family pub where kids and families are supposed to be able to come and spend their hard earned cash on a few treat drinks and food.

Staff are friendly but insides a bit of a dump now Broken wobbly tables Sticky dirty floors and menus Roof of conservatory held up with scaffolding
