Crown and Anchor in Winchester

Let me begin by acknowledging that people make mistakes; however, when someone mentions having allergies and intolerances, it should be taken seriously. With a member in our group who was both vegan and gluten-free, we took great care to emphasize this when ordering. Despite our efforts and over an hour of waiting for our food, they were served fish and chips instead of the vegan option they had specifically requested. Discovering this only after trying the dish we were appalled. Advertising as catering to vegans and yet getting such a fundamental aspect wrong is unacceptable. Additionally, the other meals were bland, appeared and tasted as if they were microwaved, and were disappointingly small in portion size and presentation. This has been one of the worst dining experiences I've had in a long time, and I would strongly advise others to seek dining options elsewhere in Winchester.

A warm and cosy welcome for our little boy and dog. The staff were super friendly and helpful, and the food was amazing! Extensive vegan and gluten free menu with yummy pub grub favourites. The children’s menu was great too. Highly recommend.

Visited Saturday 30th March and was made to feel very welcome ! Two of us had the lamb shank and the other had the burger was all very nice and shall revisit .

We weren’t planning on eating out in Winchester that night so a spontaneous visit. Although the pub from the outside looks rather plain ( hanging baskets and a new signage would help it along) the inside was very welcoming and quite cosy. Friendly staff and an excellent menu though. We sat close to the bar and the dogs were welcomed.. Ordered Guinness and cider. For our menu my friend and I chose from the vegan options ( extensive choices) by default I had the same as her a veggie pie, ( as lasagna was not available) this came with sides of carrots peas and lovely home cooked chips. The men had lasagna home baked on premises. We had a pleasant evening . There was background music and if you fancied a game of pool there was a table. It got quite busy later on.

A great pub with a range of vegan food options but although their website says the kitchen is open until 8pm, it’s only if the chef feels like it. Showing up at 7.45pm for dinner is met with “I’ll have to check…no sorry, chef has closed the kitchen now”. Not what you want when you planned to arrive in good time.

A very warm and friendly welcome from everyone. When we asked to move tables so that our dog wasn’t in the way, we were accommodated with no issues at all. The food was really good, proper pub grub. I had the lamb shank and chips and my partner had gammon egg and chips. Both cooked well and a sizeable portion. Drinks came quickly. Would definitely come back.

Popped in for a quick lunch and was pleasantly surprised with the vegan and Gluten Free menu! We had a normal fish finger sandwich with side salad, a GF fish finger sandwich, and shared a bowl of vegan sheesy chips! Scrumptious!

On a busy Christmas Market (Saturday 2nd December) day the hospitality was outstanding. We had booked a table for 4, for 13:30, and were able to increase this by 1 more, by phoning the pub just after our arrival at approximately 10:30-11:00. The service, ambiance and food were all outstanding. They catered very well for everyone, including children, with enough room to get to/ from bar + toilets without knocking into other visitors. They’d a good service of ordering both food and drink at the bar, a whole table at a time, meaning all dishes came out at the same time. Obviously a tried and tested method. Inevitably people were having to be turned away as the Christmas Market draws in a huge amount of visitors, this was done in a quiet and professional manner. Our party of 5, said we would all go back again in 2024.

I cannot give a pleasant review regarding our visit in 2nd December. A small group one being disabled went into the pub and stood at wait to be seated sign, next thing we knew, we were shouted at by a lady behind the bar asking if we had booked table, I replied no, we were then told very unpolitely hard luck cannot have a table without a booking. I had emailed the pub a couple of weeks before regarding our visit there also a follow up call and at no time was it mentioned we needed to book a table. I have been in this pub before a few years ago and was not treated like that then. But we found a lovely place a few streets away, very friendly staff at the Bay Leaf Deli.

Staff were super friendly:-) Not sure on the soup it tasted of nothing and bread didn’t have butter on but marg, yuck! Wine was lovely though, would recommend it.

My sister and I had a vegan Sunday lunch here. It was really lovely and despite the pub being busy, the service was good. Unfortunately they didn’t have any apple crumble left for dessert but there were other vegan options which was a pleasant surpise!

Decided to come here for a birthday meal with family and it was fantastic. The lovely Scottish lady (sorry didn't catch her name) that served us was very friendly and welcoming. The food was beautiful and enjoyed by all, couldn't fault it. Will definitely be returning soon.

When travelling from Scotland and looking for a relaxed place to eat we couldn't fault the Crown and Anchor. On arrival with our 2 dogs we were greeted by the fantastic friendly staff who gave us a table with some space and promptly attended to the dogs with a bowl of water and a biscuit whilst we perused the menu, felt very spoiled for choice, everything is homemade by the talented chefs by also offering gluten free choices, I had a chicken and cider pie which was so huge I couldn't finish it but got to take the remainder away with us, my husband had steak and kidney pie which he devoured in minutes. Can't wait to go back on our next trip South and will go out of our way just to revisit here. Thanks Crown and Anchor

We very much enjoyed our time at the Crown and Anchor. Only popped in for a quick drink and ended up staying for food and a few more beers. The service right from the start was great from all the staff that we spoke to. They were genuinely friendly and the service was spot on. We had some traditional pub grub which was lovely and the portion sizes were decent, especially for the price which was reasonable. It was unusually busy for around 3pm when we went, with a large hen do and a group playing pub golf all turned up at once. But everyone got served very swiftly and no one was stood around for long. Would definitely go back again!

It is the greatest thing to find somewhere these days to find somewhere that sells great food but has the staff, characters and characteristics of a good old fashioned pub. Today we found this. Amazing, friendly hard working staff, great food, met some great local characters. Can't wait to visit again

Was Mother’s Day, arrived on the off chance. Very busy as expected but was asked to come back after 3pm which we did. Didn’t disappoint ! I had the roast beef and hubby had pie… both sensational! Lovely and hot, great portion size and staff who went above and beyond! Will definitely return! Special mention to Jason the chef!!!!

I have visited the pub for food a number of times in the past, as they have an extensive vegan menu. So when we wanted to celebrate some family birthdays with a group of 3 vegans and 2 meat eaters (one with a dairy allergy) it seemed like a great option. And we weren't disappointed. All 5 of us had something different and everyone really enjoyed their food. The waitress was also very attentive and friendly. Highly recommended.

Wow.. what a treat!! Yuuuuuuuumy !!! My friend and I went for dinner and was so overwhelmed with the expansive vegan & GF menu . Usually you just get one or two options but we were spoilt for choice and it was DELICIOUS!!!!! We both had the bannna blossom “fish” & chips.. for pud the apple pie & crumble with icecream Highly recommend!!

My friend and I visited today and felt very welcomed by the staff. We both had the lasagne, for me it was the best, cheesiest, lasagne I've had. I will be visiting with another friend soon as the Gluten free menu has a great range too. Thank you to the staff.

We popped in here for a drink and a bite to eat as we had been out for the day and Winchester was on our way home. We received a very warm welcome and seated straight away. We had our young baby with us and they were very accommodating. They warmed up his food and never at any point did we get the impression he wasn’t welcome (which sometimes in a pub setting on a Friday early evening you can feel a bit like they are glaring at you to get out) I had the lasagne and I have to say it was the best lasagne I’ve had from a pub.. EVER!! My husband had the lamb shank which also looked delicious! Thank you so much for a proper pub grub dinner and a very warm welcome!

Visited Winchester for the day Found the Crown & Anchor pub at the end of high street & went in for a drink & food. Had pie of the day, lamb shank & chicken burger. All three meals were amazing, very good value & super tasty all homemade too. Highly recommend this pub. Will definitely we back next time we are in Winchester. Staff also friendly.

The best pie we have eaten in a pub for a long long time. Lovely friendly efficient staff our compliments to the chef. Beautifully presented too..and the gravy was such good quality. Lovely dinner that accompanied our bottle of red wine. Very reasonably priced too. Lots of people eating which is always a good sign. Great atmosphere. Thank you. We will be back

Visited with friends for a Christmas party and with such a lot of choice in Winchester you’re always worried if you made the right decision… Crown & Anchor had the best service I’ve experienced for a long, long time so safe to say we were all very happy. All the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful and made you feel like a truly valuable customer. Tastiest mulled wine I’ve ever had, and the food was a very generous portion. Definitely recommend a visit here.

Went at beginning of December for a pre-Christmas meal with friends. We all ate off the Christmas menu, three having turkey and two fish. All the meals were generous portions and well cooked and tasty, of course. But the real gem is the staff. From start to finish, without exception, all staff were incredibly welcoming, helpful and above all friendly. It makes a huge difference to your evening if you feel the staff are genuinely friendly. The pub was busy and the atmosphere was great. Still didn’t feel rushed at all with service. Thoroughly recommend.

Fabulous pub. Food was great - I'm vegetarian and intolerant to gluten and some dairy so eating out can be a nightmare, but this pub was amazing. They have a vegan menu with tons of choices - mix of fake meat and veg/lentil dishes - and nearly all the menu, normal and vegan, are gluten free! Found out someone in the chef's family is gluten intolerant so this makes sense! 1st time in ages I've had a meal out and not had a reaction after. AND a bonus, the staff are great - thanks to Tom and Amy for making it such a great xmas lunch. REALLY popular spot so definitely book.

Stopped at Winchester on a drive back to London from Dorset & decided to have lunch after a walk & popped into Crown&Anchor, a busy bustling pub, staff were friendly, good menu with lots of veggie vegan options for me, food was quick & good quality for a good price

Its STILL ALL GRAVY BABY! It’s our 12 year wedding anniversary and my beautiful amazing wife let me go and get my gravy fix. To be greeted as Ahh your the gravy man brought a huge grin to my face and some of the regulars as I ordered a Guinness and Steak and ale pie with mash kale carrots peas and a BOAT of gravy. (The gravy is hand made and has the meat juices which is rich and dark) I have to admit I did arrive with a light sweat on my brow as my walking speed increased whilst weaving through the busy market stalls with my sights fixed on the crown and anchor sign hanging proud on the wall of the pub.I also had that butterfly feeling of excitement in my tummy and the hope that the food and drink would be as scrumptious and plentiful as it was on my last visit a few months ago. Well I was not disappointed. And you will not be disappointed either. This is a GEM of a pub and it’s a PUB. If laughter, great beer and food is your staple then pay a visit! The staff are friendly courteous and genuinely enjoy there work.Food is quick as is the humour.If you want to sit in and enjoy your own company then there is seating for you. I have been told the lamb shank comes with MINT GRAVY… oh and it’s hand made… not your boxed imitations.Until the next time..

This pub was a great choice. Felt comfortable the moment I walked in, the lovely waitress was bright, friendly and very accommodating. Her honesty was refreshing when she told me the second I walked in that there are no tables available for at least half an hour as everyone suddenly came in just now. That was impressive for a start, because that told me if everyone descended on this place to eat, it simply must be popular. I said I would wait as two friends will be joining me. Then a chap walked in and she showed him to a table with a Reservation sign on the table. She asked if this was my friend, he then said I would be welcome to join him. What followed was really the unthinkable. I sat with this really lovely affable guy I had never seen before and we started a really fun, light-hearted conversation about Kung Fu and Bruce Lee of all topics. When I was trying to choose from the Menu, he said the Lasagne was very good and he might have that again, he also said he had the Sausage and Mash dish before and it was very good. Then the cheerful chap on the next Table overheard us talking about what to choose and joined in and said he thoroughly recommended the Lasagne, it is a very generous portion size, hot and very filling. By then I was so happy, comfortable and thought if this is the sort of great locals they have in this pub then I am very happy coming here again.The lovely waitress then came back to say there is a half an hour wait for the food as the chef is snowed under with all these sudden orders but asked us if we wanted something to drink. By then, my two friends had turned up and joined us - by then we were all having a bit of a party. This lovely chap I had never seen before and the great guys on the table next to us were really delightful, very funny and loved their sense of humour. If these are the locals then am not surprised it was packed out. All the tables were full and was really impressed to see that several tables had the Reservation signs on them, so this is one popular pub. The locals clearly make a happy relaxed and enjoyable ambience and by then all of us were talking about Lasagne, Bruce Lee, Tai Chi, Kung Fu. You name it - we were all talking about fun topics and loved the friendliness and lovely customer service the waitress was serving up. She had great customer service and bang on cue - in half an hour our Lasagnes were served with delicious looking triple cooked chips. This was one gorgeous Lunch. The Lasagne was Home Made and worth every penny. It was a very generous portion, very hot and cooked to absolute perfection - so top praise for the excellent chef who knew how to ensure we come here again. I was thrilled to see the chef went the extra mile by adding in grated carrots and chopped onions in the beef mince. The beef was perfectly tasty, just a hint of a garlic taste to it, the pasta was al dente and the Bechemel sauce was creamy and gorgeous.Overall it was the great waitress who helped my first time experience here the best one I have had in a very long time. The food was superb and it was definitely home made, the chips were cooked to perfection, crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. Also the side salad was fresh and crispy, it had a really tasty dressing on top, it was so good and fresh I ate the lot and polished off every bit of the Lasagne. I did not waste a morsel as it was that good.Also chatting and laughing with the local customers added to the mix. The two guys on the next table had great personalities and helped make it a very enjoyable visit. They were cheerful, friendly and fun to talk to.I would definitely recommend this eating place to anyone who wants to drink and eat in a great pub which was in a very good spot near all the bus stops and the Park & Ride stop for travellers who are visiting Winchester for the day.

What a fantastic lunch we had today. 6 adults and a two year old... We all ate and my what fabulous food. Best food and service we have had whilst we have been in Hampshire on holiday. Cannot fault a thing. If we lived nearer we would be there every night!

Dropped in for a quick bite and drink. Two steak pies were really good, plus two gammon and eggs. Proper gravy too. Good prices for food and drinks. The lady who served us was really helpful and seemed genuinely happy to look after us. Thank you. A good place to visit and great value.

We called in a bit late in the afternoon but were still served a delicious roast beef lunch - very tasty - husband could have ate another ! Only a teeny gripe- a bigger yorky pud please ! We were served promptly and well done too all the hard working team in these difficult but hopefully only better times too come .

We have to travel to Winchester once a year for work and found this gem of a pub last time we were there. Looked on the menu outside, but there didn't seem much of a vegetarian offering, but my guest was happy with the one dish available, so we went in about 6pm. Greeted by a lovely lady with amazing blue hair and a big smile. She was happy to recommend one of their gins (honey) which I'd never had before an she very promptly brought our drinks to the table. Then she stayed and chatted for a while, which is always nice when you're not from the area.When I mentioned that my dining companion was a vegetarian, she brought out a completely different 'vegan and vegetarian menu', which they really should advertise outside as we nearly went elsewhere when we thought there wasn't much veggie stuff on offer.I had the lamb shank with seasonal veg and my friend had the Mediterranean bean pie, with chips and veg. Both meals looked and tasted AMAZING! and they were huge!!! There was no way we could have eaten a pudding, we only just managed to eat the main course and we consider ourselves to have quite big appetites.Chef came out and had a chat too, we told him how nice is was to have decent fresh veg and very nicely cooked they were too. What a nice chap.Can't fault the place, will definitely be back next time we are in Winchester.

Called in for a quick drink before going for a meal (elsewhere). Price of wine was very good and wine was good. HOWEVER, the place had loud music (pandemic rules say NO loud music) the customers playing poole were all shouting at each other to make themselves heard. Onlookers were constantly heard using the F word. We felt like we had found the bottom of the Winchester pub market. Without drinking all of our first drink we found the escape route and left. Never again!!!

Stopped here today for a quick bite to eat. And possibly had the best salad I've ever had. Who knew how tasty a salad could be! The service was fantastic! The salad was a large portion with delicious dressing and a large variety of salads. I really enjoyed my VISIT. The menu stated all allergens too! Really appreciate it when a restaurant caters for all needs. My friend had ham egg and chips and that looked amazing too! Wish I lived closer to visit again sooner! Highly recommended to anyone. The vegan home made pie was one of the best I've had with great pastry and a chef that knows vegans need protein not just veg! Lovely presentation and really tasty. Reasonable price too. For meat eaters I heartily reccomend the lamb shank.Really good prices. If your looking for an honest pub with great affordable food in Winchester, this is the place to go.

We popped into this pub on our recent visit expecting a mediocre pub experience. We got a lot more than we bargained for. The food was exceptional. My partner had the pie of the day - he loved it. My sausage and mash was delightful. Finished with a delicious syrup sponge and vanilla pod ice-cream. Yum! The chef is outstanding. Staff were super friendly. It has a local, friendly vibe and is located close to all the action of the city. Exceptionally good value and Covid 19 measures in place. Definitely recommend a visit.

We visited the city without planning, and popped into the pub for a pint. We ended up staying for lunch. Great Sunday Roast, with some huge portions. Couldn't believe we finished it! The pub was welcoming, despite the current restrictions in place, and the bar staff were really attentive.

Served quickly with drinks given a menu. Took a seat and looked at the amazing choice of food. My partner and i both ordered the chicken and mushroom pie with veg and mashed potato,came with seperate gravy. Have to say, delicious. The service was quick and very efficient. The lady behind the bar taking our order and bringing the food was friendly and efficient.

Saturday afternoon lunch. Googled decent food and this came up. Myself, wife and daughter - fairly busy, International Rugby on, Italy v Scotland. Nice table close to window overlooking main street. Waited only 5 minutes before nice lad took our order and a jug of iced water. A choice of board games was in the corner on a shelf so we played Pop Quiz whilst waiting for our food. Only 10 minute wait - my gammon, eggs, chips and onion rings as an extra was lovely - my daughter ate all her 3 sausages and mash with peas, parsnips and carrots and my wife enjoyed her sandwich with soup. The onion rings were really nice and crispy so we ordered more. Not a morsel was left on any of our plates. Would thoroughly recommend.A lady on the next table had ordered a meal not knowing there was meat in it until the waiter mentioned - it was changed immediately - no problem whatsoever.£30.50 thank you very much. Will see you again if my daughter signs for Winchester Uni!!

Came here a week ago with a friend and she had what she describes as one of the best ever tasting pies. I had the lamb shank and it was amazing!! The meat fell off the bone and was melt in the mouth!! Won’t be going anywhere else for a lamb shank. Returned today, the pie was once again incredible and the burger was juicy and flavourful. Great value and great food! A must visit.

Lovely welcoming pub, really helpful and friendly staff, attending to our every need, a stack of games to play, generously sized meals, not expensive, and delicious at that. The thick chips were gorgeous, the pie...huge! All the food was piping hot. Lots of gluten free options, including many mouthwatering puddings. Will definitely return if we pass through the area again.

Went here for lunch and ordered from main menu. It is on the Meerkat Meals offer which is why we thought we'd try it.Great food, good portion sizes, friendly staff and a cosy, comfortable atmosphere. Vegan burger was great, not dry like some are! Apparently the chicken pie was fantastic, the best my mum had ever had apparently.It was great value as we had 2 for 1 but even without the offer it would have been great value for money. Totally recommended. Will definitely be back.

The staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful. Food is superb! Portions are great, especially if you have a hearty appetite. The managers and staff were so accommodating. 17 of us had meals and none of us were kept waiting!! HIGHLY recommend this place and will definitely be back when in the area again

In Winchester for an event at the Guildhall and stopped in the pub for a quick meal. Ended up coming back the following 2 days for lunch and dinner. Fantastic food with staff that couldn't do enough to help us. Will definitely be coming back next time we're in the city. Thanks to Liam for his hospitality.
