Cross Keys in York

Service was good but food was underwhelming. All steaks were overcooked and very chewy. I had mixed grill. Chicken and steak were overcooked and dry and the egg was over cooked. Standard chain pub food but just very off the mark this occasion.

Stayed in motorhome in carpark. Brilliant stopover. Food great and reasonably priced.

Not to busy week days afternoons .But still quite a few in eating & drinking.

Lovely place to eat, so cozy and the food was just great. It was fairly busy when we went but we didn't have to wait long for food to come out either.

Excellent steak and ale pie come from Scotland every year for it

My husband's hunters chicken was a little overdone but he enjoyed the flavours. My lasagne was burnt on the top & bottom, the bottom layer was inedible, my garlic bread was burnt too. I did something I have never done in my life- I sent it back. The replacement was fine, served on a scalding hot plate that cooked my salad- which had been scraped off my original plate & added on to the new roasting hot plate. Would we go back? No

Staff amazing, we had booked food for a table off 8 for a hen party. The staff are so friendly and helpful. Turned out it was disco/karaoke night which turned into a great start of my hen weekend. Food was amazing too. Thanks for a great night 😊

Had fantastic time on new years eve. Food was delicious. Great atmosphere. Lovely staffs although one of the staff I presume supervisor or manager was very rude. Gave tip to one of the girl only noticed that the manager took it off from the girl and put in her pocket. Didn't like her attitude.

Busy pub with only 1 bar person serving, I waited 20 minutes to get served.

First visit for 54 years! Looked like a good community based pub. Seemed to do lots of stuff. A good fit pint. Would happily use it again.

Stopped off in there for a drink on my way home. Was served quickly and there is a fair range of beers available. The gents however smelled so bad of urine I had to get outside for some fresh air. Not planning on going back.

Went for a meal ended up with a ccj for parking in their car park never again. Yes it was here 100% here. It was dark didn't see signs or have to notify bar Im parked in your car park not normal. Affected my credit mortgage. Disgrace.

The pub was very welcoming and busy for a Saturday night, wait for a table was about1/2 hour to 1hour, food was a little over cooked on one meal the other would have been nice if it was hot and freshly cooked, had been standing a while nobody came up to us and asked for feedback on the meal ( the waitress was running around a lot and busy)

OK for cheap lunch loverly pub , but a little bland

Sunday lunch was fantastic, The Beef was falling apart and still medium, Lots of seasonal vegetables. We reserved online and our table had a little chalk board on it with our name. Busy but not crowded for a Sunday afternoon. Very cosy on a wet and windy afternoon. Staff where all very friendly and helpful. Craft beers are available here and the bar staff will help you select one to suit your taste. Overall a real gem on the outskirts of York 20 minute walk but worth it.

Lovely welcoming pub, a male behind the bar was really lovely giving my children colouring in to do! I think he could see how stressed I was as my children were restless! Glad we stopped by on the way back home it was totally off chance we came here but glad we did the Sunday roasts are great! Thank you :) x

Been 6 years since we sat by the roaring fire in the lounge but we remembered it. Stopped in for fish and chips, lovely young lady behind the bar from Houghton le spring served us, would recommend visiting if your in lunch for lunch or just a pint.

Within a short walk from our hotel, we tried the Cross Keys. Atmosphere was good, but not great. The staff were a bit reserved, and though we had reservations, our table was not quite ready. I ordered something similar to Steak and Ale pie; the meat was ground beef which I was not expecting. The taste was pretty good, but this was more like Shephard's Pie and not exactly what I was expecting. The broccoli was warm to cool, a bit stringy and was not very flavorful. My wife had a large serving of fish and chips which she said was quite good. The speed of service was a bit slow, though the staff were friendly and helpful.

The Cross Keys is across the road to the IHG Hotel. It is a very friendly, warm atmosphere, excellent food and service. If you like pies then their award winning steak pie will fill your boots, yum yum!

What a pub and what an atmosphere best night I've had out for a long time there was a band on last night but I can't remember the name if anyone could help me would be much appreciated x

Food is normally quite good here but I had a beef pie yesterday and it was burnt around the edges and you needed a power drill to cut into it, very disappointed and the gravy was just a slab in the gravy boat, almost turned it upside down before it flopped onto the plate

Friendly service from all staff, was meeting a friend and was surprised with the amount of events going on in December, will definitely be fetching the kids to the Halloween kids event

Working down in York for the week. Happened to stumble into a cracker of a pub. Arrived on Sunday evening at the hotel. Took the 2 min walk along the road to try here for some food and a couple of pints. Very friendly welcome. It was really busy but the staff kindly got me a table for dinner at a slightly later time. Not a problem. Locals were nice and friendly too. The place just has a nice atmosphere about it. The food was excellent. I can't fault anything. Food is that good, I've eaten every night of the week bar 1. The mixed grill is definitely one to try. Like I say, a good honest pub.

Very good succulent food, so good we went back on a subsequent occasion for lunch. The sausage and onions on a bed mash with gravy really hits the spot. They also have quite a few non alcoholic beers which is good for me👍👍

Great pub and great food, very reasonable priced food.

Went with a large group of friends and they managed most of the dishes arriving together. My dish was veg curry. Very tasty and plenty of it. Puddings were ok but standard. Ainsty beer stout was lovely and the pink gins.

We stayed over the road and just needed a quick bite to eat. The service was good and was a nice place to eat but the food was ok, nothing special. My son and I had a pizza and, for the price, I wish I had chosen something else.

Not great , Didn't have anything on the menu that I wanted & by the sounds of it the people on the next table couldn't get what they wanted either . Poor service , Food wasn't great . No staff members even spoke when clearing our table . Very odd .

Very average - Busy pub, modern, clean. Food ordered, took 30 mins to come, starter came with the main at same time, didn't reject as was hungry. Wings bog standard, garlic mayonnaise is good. Steak, I could cook a 5 quid tesco one better ... and my cooking isn't anything great. Peppercorn sauce is packet. Not really anything special. Over 30 quid. Expect better really.

Need more pop for none drinkers? I asked for 7 up, and you didn't have any only lemonade on tap

Great food, very tasty, great atmosphere. Service was ok but staff seemed under pressure. Not sure if they were short staffed this night, or if this is the norm. We enjoyed our experience here 😊

Nice looking pub/eatery. Went to the bar there was a very cheerful lady serving a gentleman that I can only assume was a regular as when she had finished serving him and it was my turn she had changed into a totally different woman, the smile had gone no small talk and in all honesty she came across quite short and impatient. Anyway we ordered food, I ordered the fish from the specials my partner ordered the katsu curry neither was great, not bad but sub par pub food. Add that to the uneven rocky sticky table and bar full glasses its not somewhere I'd return to.

Came in for a drink and something to eat, my partner used the bathroom so I asked the girl behind the bar where the ladies was. She looked me up and down with a dirty look and pointed over her shoulder without saying a word to me. I used the bathroom and left without getting a drink as she made me feel very uncomfortable. Went and got a drink elsewhere.

Great location, great food and service! Came for a holiday from Canada and this little pub did not disappoint! Had a couple of meals and the food was great! Service was friendly and helpful.

Disappointing! Husband ordered rare steak which was well done but he did say nice piece of meat. I was going to have a senior special but the special price only applies on Thursday - where was the signage and why have the menus out? So I ordered burger and asked for no bbq sauce (the menu has a lot of bbq sauce which is not everyone’s cup of tea). Sadly the burger was so bland I could only eat half of it. After letting my little food digest I thought I would get an ice cream. They stop serving food at 8.45 it was 9 pm so couldn’t get an ice cream which takes no prep at all. I even said the mains were not great but all I got was sorry! Think customer care. How much effort to plate 3 scoops of ice cream? Not the best of experiences. The waiter was sweet and tried his best.

We went for tea, service quite bad young chap didn't know what he was doing. Ordered food got fish and chips was terrible no fish just hard crispy batter. Won't be going again.

Just had the fish and chips for lunch which was excellent. Fish was perfect with very crispy batter with chunky chips and peas and all good portion sizes too.

The pub is just across the road from the Holiday Inn and the number 4 bus stop to York centre. A good old traditional pub with a good menu too. We went for dinner about 6pm. Great atmosphere and helpful staff. The home made steak...

Very clean and polite staff. The meal of 2 course's was excellent value for money. I would suggest that there should be an extra staff to concentrate on meal orders and not leave it to the bar staff as this does delay the food orders arriving at the table.

Looked like it could have been a nice pub, but the Friday night I attended the bar was about 80% covered in used glasses, with more on the tables around the bar. Looked like it would get like this fast if midly busy due to small dishwasher. This may have been a one off as I said.

We went here for dinner yesterday with three adults and one child. Short staffed but good service regardless and amazing food. We were very impressed and the price was fair. Alot of entertainment throughout the week and includes a child and senior menu

Would have given 0 stars but not an option! What an absolute dive! Females so drunk or whatever they are on, falling allover the place! the dess code seems to be work clothes or trainers and leggings... way overpriced for the type of bar it is, karaoke was laughable ..never again clearly a chav pub!

Stopped by on Monday evening for a spot of food after a busy day sightseeing I’ve seen this pub in the past and always thought it looked like a nice pub. I am so glad we decided to call in! Parking at the rear was plentiful & easily accessible Welcomed warmly by the bar staff - it was great to see that dogs are welcome in the place as well We are a family of three and found plenty of choices for the food. Staff happily accommodated a couple of small “tweaks” to the meals like jacket instead of chips etc. They can pour Guinness correctly!😁 Been a fair while since I’ve seen bar staff let Guinness stand before topping it up the way it ought to be be. That was the first tell we’d found a gem The food was ample and delicious! It’s been a long time since I enjoyed pub food so much! Next time we’re in York we’ll be calling back in! Only small fault I can find is that there was no check back on the meals. In our case everything was perfect so not an issue for us. Thank you for a pleasant meal that concluded a wonderful day in York!

We stopped here for 1 night in Campervan , lovely friendly pub , near to Race course in York. The Cross Keys was very friendly and accommodating. We rang and booked ahead and had a nice evening meal and drinks there , we are vegetarian but there were some nice choices. Staff were friendly and worked hard. It is a dog friendly pub and there is a nice outside sunny terrace with tables. York City Centre took about 35 mins to walk into from the pub, it is on a bus route but we got a taxi back . Thankyou

Expected a typical pub meal, but with over an hour wait it was extremely disappointing. The staff were lovely though and it was a busy day.

A solid 4 star rating for us overall! Reasonable choice on the menu for a family of 5. Quick service. Those who had pies really enjoyed them - nice pastry! The beer (Timothy Taylor) was far better than some we had elsewhere on this trip.

Reserved a table which then disappeared when we came to eat. Had to go somewhere else.

We visited the cross keys for drinks on our first night in York. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and went out of their way to ensure our visit was enjoyable. We can’t thank Kaz and Ripley enough. We had such a great time...
