Stayed here to break our journey from Central Scotland to the Peak District. Had a very pleasant chalet type room at the rear of the property with easy access. Enjoyed a drink and an evening meal in the bar with our wee dog. We both had the sirloin steak with was generous in proportion and quite tasty.Staff friendly as were the locals. Would definitely return.

Driving by, heading to the M6 and the well regarded Tebay services, spotted this old pub and the board outside mentioning pizza. Quick decision made, turned the car around and parked outside. Walked in to a fairly busy bar, nice welcome and friendly staff. We were shown to a table in the sunny restaurant area, with a view over the garden below. We ordered one of the pizzas, the size wasn't listed but we were told they were big and overhang the plate. Also the steak and ale pie. The room soon got busy, it was about 6:30pm but we didn't wait particularly long for our food. The pizza (margherita) was indeed massive, at least 12 inches across. Very tasty with a thin and crispy crust. The steak and ale pie was filled with lean meat and surrounded by a crisp crust. Accompaniments were green vegetables including peas and broccoli. A jug of red wine gravy, more than sufficient, enough for dipping the chips that came with the meal. I might have ordered potatoes if they were an option with the dish but the chips were chunky, crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. Overall both meals were delicious but a few chips and slices of pizza defeated us. We weren't rushed even though the room was filling up. Pleased to see well behaved dogs were allowed in too. Prices were good value. We also checked out the toilet facilities and pleased to find them clean and tidy with sufficient stocks. In summary we would go back if in the area and recommend the few minutes drive from the M6 at Tebay (junction 38) to this lovely old pub.

Stopped on today purely by chance and so glad we did. The gentleman who served us was a excellent host. Friendly and welcoming. My husband had the ravioli and it was delicious. I had the steak and it was exceptional. Cooked rare to perfection, just melted in my mouth, probably one of the best steaks I have ever had. Would thoroughly recommend here instead of all the hassle of parking in Kendal. Will definitely stop off here again.

He visto varias reseñas desfavorables aquí, y me temo que no puedo entender.

Looking forward to a succulent steak meal..........at first glance it looked ordinary..... with a huge portion of peas - to fill out one side of the plate....and a large red tomato staring back at me..... accompanied with piping hot chips.....and in addition one tried the peppercorn sauce...Once all was plated in front of me........poured on the peppercorn sauce, which cooled the steak immediately........after only a few mouthfuls noticed the steak...'swimming' around the plate.......presumably waterish? liquid........from the large tomato kept in the fridge? Only the chips kept the meal at an edible temperature once inside your mouth. This made my decision to not try the dessert.a shame from a pleasant 'olde' pub and surroundings. Although the motorway services at Tebay are above average and the country food shopping is fresh if not pricey, the service at the restaurants are fairly standard and that is where the Crosskeys Inn scores. The welcome is personal and friendly and we always go the few minutes off the road for a consistently good lunch or dinner if we pass at mealtimes. The drinking laws prohibit the driver enjoying the beers but the passengers enjoy the refreshments and the break from the motorway is refreshing. Ginger beer and soft drinks or coffee can be enjoyed in good atmosphere in quaint old fashioned pub.

Dropped in on this establishment for a bite to eat on the way back home after a day’s walking in the Northern Lakes. This is a traditional 16th century coaching inn on the main road through the village of Tebay about 5 minutes from Junction 38, off the M6. The pub is a long white painted building with distinctive waggon wheels on the walls hinting back to its former coaching inn days. There is parking for four or five cars at the front of the pub.The inside has oak beams and log fire and traditionally decorated giving a warm homely feeling. The bar offers three real ales together with the usual lagers and Guinness and a good selection of wines.Despite the protests from the legs, we did not stay overnight so I cannot comment on the rooms. We choose to eat in the bar area but there are plenty of tables in the restaurant to the rear and side of the pub. The food is all home cooked and locally sourced. The food we had was very good. Homemade Lakeland Steak & Ale Pie with a short crust pastry top instead of puff pastry which was a plus in my book and an ample amount of meat in rich gravy. Two of our party had the battered haddock and my son had the 6oz. cheese burger, all served with chips and veg. Good wholesome food all round. The landlord and staff were very hospitable and the locals even took the time to chat to us.Children and dogs (both well behaved of course) are welcome and there is a play area and beer garden to the rear. This place is ideal for a stop off if travelling onwards or for walking in the Howgill Fells.Looks like this establishment will be on our agenda the next time we are in the area.

What a great atmosphere. Everyone was made very welcome. The food was great and service fantastic. I would recommend to anyone, from a quiet drink to a great meal.

We stopped in late for supper and an overnight while driving from Aberdeen to London. It is a friendly pub/restaurant with rooms. Very Dog friendly, there were loads of dogs which I loved. We checked in late and had called ahead to see if the restaurant would still be open, they were very kind and said that we would be fed when we arrived. Excellent pub grub, friendly staff, log fire. My only fault would be that the bed wasn't very comfortable. Great breakfast to start the day. I like that the Cross Keys Inn isn't trying to be something it is not.

Was recommended this pub on a website for Driving with Dogs, and it did not disappoint. I would certainly call in again, even without a dog, when driving on the M6. Loads better than a service station by 1000% The friendly landlord welcomed myself and dog to the bar and garden and my pup had a good run with the resident German Shepherd dogs. I had a nice drink in the bar and wished I had time for a meal. It was cosy, the menu had a good range of options and specials and the lunch time ambience was pleasant. There is also a nice walk to a river from the pub. The landlord will give you directions.

We booked for 14 people plus a highchair to come to the Cross Keys Inn for a family surprise meal to celebrate my daughters 21st, our meals that we chose were delicious, freshly made, perfect portions, and very happy to fulfil a chosen request with an adult portion, for two 9 yr old to share. Landlord of the premises and his many staff, were very helpful and attentive to our every need. Lovely atmosphere, very child friendly, play area to rear, where my boys could wander to unattended, but younger children would need supervision, great overall experience, thank you

Enjoyed a tasty and pleasant meal here after long day on the motorway. Generous portions, friendly welcome, cosy village pub with good real ale. Very convenient for local B&Bs. Children & dogs are welcome!

Over-priced drinks were the initial all-too-familiar experience. After specifically requesting lightly-battered fish we endured cardboard-thick coating, probably plucked from the freezer cabinet.A house curry was not warm enough, insufficiently re-heated in the microwave.A set of cutlery had to be replaced because it had food smudged on from a previous diner. On top of this a large Alsatian was walking among diners. How hygienic is that?Additionally, only one draught ale was available. We were offered a free dessert,or a drink or a coffee but declined.Incidentally,is it normal to have a wishbone splice in a curry? The waitress was invariably pleasant and tried her best, but overall standards do not seem to be getting set by the manager.A depressing experience in contrast to previous visits.

We stopped off on our way home from Scotland. The pub was friendly enough and the food okay. The portion of nachos was tiny, the curry sauce was a bit too oily and the tartare sauce too full of capers but the meals were generally nice. A little more care could make it very nice though.

The service was very warm, welcoming and friendly. There was a few of us so we ordered different things; the food came quickly though. Fish and chips were really good; chicken pie was OK; lasagne was really tasty too. Other half had the house burger. Onion rings were lovely but it wasn't well executed - cheap black pudding and stodgy bun with blue cheese you couldn't taste. I had the stuffed chicken, very average and dry as it needed much more sauce. Portions were really good size though. Needed a little more thought for the price you pay.

We called in at the Cross Keys Inn in Tebay when we stopped overnight at the M6 services on our way to Scotland. Having been turned away at the previous hotel because we had our dog Chloe with us, we were really happy when the landlord told us that dogs are very welcome. We had a fantastic meal - the best Steak & Ale pie I think I have ever had. The staff were really great and made us (and Chloe) feel really welcome.I would highly recommend this place to anyone (we didn't stay there but will certainly consider it as our overnight stop in future), especially if you have a dog!

Ate at the Cross Keys with friends on Thursday 30th April 2015.We all had different dishes from the menu and they were all very good. The food was well presented, the portion sizes were generous and they had used good quality ingredients.Would definitely recommend eating here for anyone in this area.

We dined in Bustro 1871 as part of a short break holiday at the Appleby Manor Hotel. What a lovely break this was. Our first after the Spring and Summer lockdown. The food was really good and the waiters attentive. Appleby Manor itself is a delightful hotel full of old world charm. We are returning there again for my wife's birthday in October. I shall again dine in Bistro 1871 as well as sampling the gourmet restaurant at the hotel on our second night.
