Cross Keys in South Lanarkshire

The Cross Keys is a cosy pub with a public bar that almost feels like two separate wee snugs. There is an adjoining, larger bar that might be better suited to dining, as it is clear that the public bar is where people want to be. Service was friendly, as was the atmosphere and this is a very good wee pub.

Never been to it just park ootside it

It is a shame that The Cross Keys is not better frequented for dining. The food is always excellent.

Good honest cooking in a relaxed setting. Excellent service despite being very busy on the evening we went. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals and we look forward to returning soon.

Where do I start? Not a welcoming pub by any means and my partner and I felt as if we were intruding. The older lady behind the bar didn't smile once and came across as very ignorant. In addition, my partner informed me that there was no toilet paper in the Ladies which was obviously another negative. The only positives really were the locals who were friendly and the pub dog. My advice; stick to the establishments in the centre of town and avoid this place!

This is a great little pub with a good selection of beers and amazing food. It’s not the lap of luxury or fine dining, just good beer, good food and a friendly atmosphere. Would recommend it if you’re visiting Biggar.

Fantastic food! Good quality proper food. Hubby had steak pie - amazing and I had the chicken burger which was 100% chicken breast. Will definitely be back. Dog was welcome too!!

It’s a small bar as you enter, and it’s clearly popular as there was nowhere to sit. We were hoping to try the food so ordered drinks while the clientele made us welcome and offered us their seats. We were shown to the restaurant by a cheerful waitress and we’re pleasantly surprised by the selection of food available. A good standard menu as well as the weekend specials which change each week. I’m rarely capable of eating two courses but it sounded too good not to. Nothing was a disappointment. Top quality food, very tasty, and great service! Would have loved to have tried a cocktail but I was too full! And the place was still very busy. Definitely popular, recommend booking.

Great little pub, dog friendly, great grub

We visited from the north east while holidaying and we picked this pub based on reviews and that we could take our little dog, they were so accommodating to our group of 6 and the dog. The food was delicious and fresh. We went on a Sunday so we had a beef dinner and 1 of the group had scampi and chips. Everything was so fresh and tasty. The service was fantastic and such lovely friendly atmosphere. We really enjoyed it. We would go back most definitely and can recommend this place to others.

We have just had a meal with family here and it was outstanding. From the friendly staff, excellent service to the wonderful food. 2 of us had the 12oz fillet steaks, another had a 10oz ribeye, another had the chicken burger and the two kids had pizza. Everything was delicious. The steaks were the best we have ever had. I’m not joking. They were outstanding. Oh, and they have a dog friendly section so we were able to have our two dogs beside us.

Always like going to the Cross Keys, good food and service. Think the ceiling in the restaurant doesn't suit the rest of the decor. I think it would be better a lighter colour which goes with black and grey. But I do really like the place.

Asked to leave due to having a very small friendly dog. Was sitting outside with a 90 year old lady and 2 friends. Was shouted at from about 20 steps away. Will never return to the establishment .

We called in here for lunch two days running. First day we were unsuccessful as Wednesday is the chef's day off. Thursday we went back. The only items available from the menu were burgers or steaks. We chose burgers, they were tasty and well presented. The accompanying chips weren't fantastic, a bit anaemic. Lovely friendly and helpful staff, dogs are welcome too thanks.

Wow- what a perfect lunch experience- this is how all pubs should be! We were travelling south from Edinburgh and called ahead to book a table because they were showing the rugby at lunchtime. We received a warm welcome and were given a great table, slightly apart from the bar area and with a good view of the match on tv. Between the three of us we had breaded haddock, the famous steak pie and a chicken burger with cheese and bacon. Each of our meals were absolutely delicious and faultless. I’d go as far as to say it’s the best pub food we’ve had in years! Fresh, home made food made using great quality ingredients. The people (customers and staff alike) were friendly and welcoming. We really couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Thank you so much and we will be back!

Been to the cross keys several times ranging from tables of two to family gatherings and never once found any fault in the food. The staff are extremely attentive and friendly and always go the extra mile to accommodate you. Now my favourite part the chefs steaks perfect as always perfectly cooked and a range of sizes by far the best steaks I’ve eaten at any restaurant always look forward to coming here for food

Went in at 2.15 pm thurs Sat at table . Got ignored. Waitress walked passed serving sweets to next table then walked off. Went to bar .local that walked in after me got served again ignored. Waitress came back out again I asked if we could get served.she said stop serving food and 2.30 .showed her my phone and it was showing 2.25 she just shrugged and walked off so glad in these bad economic times that a pub can turn away a £50 plus bill because they cant be arsed. Spent money else where

Thanks to the Patrons and Staff of the cross Keys in helping ourselves and other travelers at a time of unprecedented disruption due to flooding. We only had time for a cup of tea but will be returning when we can. Pleas note our five star review requires something above and beyond good service and is rarely given.

As a treat on one of the rare mid November sunny days, we popped in for some drinks and a bar lunch. The roast dinner was absolutely first class. Everything on the plate was superbly cooked and full of flavour. Regrettably my own Yorkshire puds which everyone loves have been pipped into 2nd place. They were exceptional and I now have to replicate. Wonderful staff and a great selection of drinks too.

What a friendly bunch of people to meet. We took our indian friend to Scotland for a small holiday and popped in for a quick drink. We were made very welcome by the staff and locals. Please visit this fantastic place

We booked a meal last night at the Cross Keys in Biggar for 4 for 7.00pm only to be called this afternoon and offered a table at 8.45. They said they had taken a large booking. When questioned they said they had only just found our booking and couldn't fit us in. No apology was offered

Staff extremely friendly. George and Kate made us feel more like friends than customers. We had a meal on our last night which was amazing. Very large portions The curry and the steak pie were to die for. We will definitely be returning next time we're in the area. Thank you everyone for making our visit so enjoyable. Very enjoyable meal, we had Nachos and Deep fried Brie to start followed by the 'build a burger' . You could tell the food was freshly prepared the Brie was particularly good really light Panko coating and all the cheese melted inside - delicious. Burgers were large, and meaty with fresh fillings. I opted for the chilli addition but on the side and that was full of flavour also so I'd bet a full dish of that would be a good choice too. Service was excellent really friendly lady very attentive and was good at communicating with the kids. We only live about 40 mins away so will definitely return.

Definitely the best place in Biggar to go for meal, and will always be my favourite. One chef who makes the best food about. Massive portions, perfect taste and not expensive at all. Anything you ask, they will do for you.

So we visited for the very first time on Sunday and I found it to be very friendly had a really welcoming atmosphere staff were friendly and attentive the only reason for 4 stars and not 5 was because we only had drinks but I will definitely be back to try the food, o and I must admit that the wee dog with its own chair at the bar really made my day.

Great service, generous portions, good tasty salad with pate. I don't go for puff pastry with the steak pie, preferring short crust, but lots of meat in a fine gravy. Excellent value. Good parking behind the pub.

Had lovely lunch with family today, fish was lovely but the chicken waffles were amazing! We were all picking at my brother in laws lunch! Will definately be back, staff very friendly and food freshly cooked.

Been here a few times now. Friendly, attentive staff who make sure we enjoy our eating out experience. Food well presented and always exceptional. Varied menu at realistic prices.

I telephoned in advance to book a table. The day before I was called to confirm. Good start. On arrival there was a proforma track and trace sheet to fill in. This was actually pre-printed and more formal looking than the usual scrap pieces of paper you have to fill in. Another positive. Lounge was well laid out and the bar maid showed us to the table with a pleasant manner and friendly smile. Beef nachos for my friend and I to share. Very tasty and a good size portion. Washed down with a pint of lager. It's going so well can this continue? A very big yes! We both have the steak pie (£9.95). Wow!! Probably the best steak pie dish I have ever had. Piping hot, plentiful of tasty chunks, perfect pastry to rounded off by magnificent big chips, not a single one burnt or crispy and perfect vegtables to accompany it all. It took a bit of ergot but I managed to finish it all, my friend couldn't. It was simply brilliant 👏 absolutely flawless meal, cooked by a magician and presented like a work of art. Served, I have to say by a charming lady who looked after us. It's the following day and I'm still raving about this meal. I thought twice about doing this review as I might not get a table next week but feel the staff absolutely deserve the praise. Bravo. And see you again soon.

Had a lovely few drinks night before. Good welcome with 2 very well behaved Labrador’s in tow. Returned today and our visit quickly turned to dismay. Requested a menu and without question were sharply told it would be at least an hour before they they could serve. However thought with only 4 diners a portion of Nachos to accompany our drinks wouldn’t be a big ask! Hello.... no can do for at least an hour ...... Dinner plans with visiting family & friends now ditched

We were on our way last night for dinner after the wonderful recommendations from local folk,phoned ahead to ensure a table was available as I believe it can get busy,the young lady who answered the phone informed me that food had STOPPED at 8:15, I found this very strange, especially on a Friday night, very disappointed.

We visited the pub for lunch on Sunday. I now follow a Gluten Free diet for medical reasons and was very impressed at the options available. Thank you to the chef for coming out to talk to me about my options and for preparing a delicious meal. There are plenty of larger establishments that appear not to be able to do this.

We have had many meals and dinners here and all have been excellent but today I had Peppadew Pork and OMG it was amazing! Would definitely recommend. Complements to the Chef!

Celebrated my Father in laws birthday here last night. Every single meal was hot,tasty and really well priced. The steak was to die for! Would highly recommend.

Food and drink were excellent. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Decor needs a bit of updating, as does some of the furniture and the bathrooms. Apart from that, I'd definitely recommend, purely because the food was that good, and all for a great price.

Called in here for lunch/drink on our way home from Edinburgh. The lady behind the bar couldn’t have made us feel less welcome if she’d tried. So much so that we drank up quickly and left without ordering any food and ate elsewhere. We didn’t get so much as a thank you or goodbye. Particularly poor when we were the only customers in there.

After a few recomendations, Finally got around to trying the food here. We had previously tried other pubs in Biggar but were mostly disappointed by the quality and value in them. I had some very tasty pea & ham soup my wife had Japanese style prawns, cooked in batter with a nice dip. I had possibly the largest portion of steak pie I have ever encountered, decent chips and veg.. Wife had the biggest lamb cutlets she has ever seen with chips onion rings and a nice dressing. All very nice. the portions were huge and we both struggled to clear the plate. Not a bad complaint. But they could be reduced thus making space for one of the excellent sounding deserts on the menu. Service was excellent, friendly, cheerful staff. Prices cheapest in Biggar. All in all excellent value and good food. A winning combination. 5 stars all round. Try it.. You won't be Disappointed, just make sure you are hungry. PS. A lock on the gents would be a bonus Cheers

Was in Cross Keys for a meal on a Sunday afternoon. To be honest, it doesn’t look much but the food is absolutely excellent. My husband says it is the best steak he has had in his life. I had the steak pie and it was really lovey. Was busy but service was really decent. Would definitely recommend to anyone.

We both thoroughly enjoyed our first ever visit to the Cross Keys . The food was superb and the service excellent. Most important feature of any pub, the beer, was also very tasty. Most enjoyable night and our thanks to the staff for making it so !

Had a gorgeous meal here on a random Saturday night. Had tried to book in previous weeks before but was fully booked, I'm not surprised. James had a range for everyone. Was fantastic and both my husband and I have planned staff nights out here.

Local chef showed flashes of classical training - food very well presented and appealingly garnished. All food items prepared to taste as requested. Numerous visits to table by chef to insure satisfaction. Soups and stews were big hits - hearty, meaty, and hot. Great selection of beers.

The food here is exceptional. 10/10 to the chef! Had a wonderful lunch here today and was looked after well by all the staff. Can't wait to go back again :)

I was a bit concerned as the place was empty at about 1.45pm on a Sunday (not a good sign) but it started filling up shortly afterwards.

1st class meal and great value for money. Service also very good.

We booked into The Keys for dinner on Saturday evening not to be disappointed. The ladies enjoyed Chilli Con Carne (nice little kick to it) while the gentlemen enjoyed Steak Rossini. A nice little pub with food not to be missed. Would definately recommend.

Popped in to The Cross Keys for a catch up family lunch. Good varied menu with "special's " I had the home made steak pie and it was delicious, (reasonable prices)and the rest of my family really enjoyed theirs. We will definitely be back again.

For a meal it's absolutely fantastic.highly recommend.
