Hungry Gannet in South Lanarkshire

While looking through old photos of our 2022 trip to the UK, I stumbled upon pictures of the dishes we had at The Hungry Gannet and was instantly transported back to that wonderful day. My husband and I were traveling from Glasgow to Manchester and initially sought a good takeaway spot. By chance, we discovered The Hungry Gannet—and we’re so glad we decided to stop and dine in for brunch instead! The food was absolutely amazing. Portions were generous and satisfying. My omelette (with chicken and tomatoes) was hefty—crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and served with a wonderfully refreshing salad. My husband had the Tandoori Chicken Wrap, and coming from Singapore, where Indian food is a staple, he was impressed by how authentic and flavourful it was. We polished off everything on our plates, though we couldn’t quite finish the strawberry milkshake—it was delicious but we were too full! The café itself was cozy and intimate, despite being bustling from the moment we arrived until the time we left. The staff were super friendly, and we were fortunate to be served by the owner himself, who was warm and gentle. His kindness left a lasting impression on me, and it made our visit all the more special. I was genuinely sad we couldn’t return before leaving Scotland. Here’s hoping we cross paths again someday. My 3rd visit, my son and daughter in law's 1st. They were astonished at the variety of different foods, my daughter in law had the Peckish breakfast, her face was a picture when it came but for such a small person she done well. My son ordered the American breakfast and a portion of nachos with cheese and jalapeños, which he took home for later. I had pancakes, strawberries and strawberry sauce mmmm delicious, I had a strawberry milk shake, my son a banana one and Emily a tea. They will be back. Staff as usual go that extra mile to ensure you have an enjoyable time. They are constantly on the go, smiling and welcoming

All the food is unbelievable , 10/10 must try it

Really good filled rolls and soups, always busy but worth a we wait, alway try and use it if bedding a quick bite, OK prices as well

A small and neat restaurant to replete your tummy with some breakfast and lunch items. Very busy during weekend. Seating arrangements are limited but well maintained. Tasted their baked potatoes with chicken filling and salad. Taste was pleasant and replete your tummy. Prices are reasonable enough . Take away available.

Superb food. From a simple ham toastie, to a glorious beef and lamb wrap with mint and sweet chilli sauces. Properly tasty, and a good size too. Turned a grumpy day looking for a quick bite, to a lovely lunch out. Will be back.

We stumbled with The Hungry Gannet while my kids were having swimming lesson. What a fantastic place, so polite, smiling and helpful team members. The owner's hospitality is above and beyond. We have Chargrilled chicken with Chips and Grilled veg baguette, with cappuccino and tea. Food is absolutely die for, so fresh. First time I have seen so good place where difficult to fund any fault. Their selection of icecream we couldn't enjoy but worth a try in summer time. Keep rocking team The Hungry Gannet, you deserve all the awards should you wish to enter. My all votes to you.

Wow. Actually speechless. The food is great quality. The portions are HUGE. The staff friendly. Food is cheap. Warning to people. Please read the description of the food as these portions are not for the faint of heart. My partner actually broke a sweat! The "peckish" breakfast is not for those feeling a bit peckish. You need and empty stomach. Incredible and we WILL be back again!

My husband and I went to the hungry gannet for the very first time today 14-11-2024. we had ordered the full scottish breakfast and could not believe my eyes the size of the portion was out of this world it was cooked to perfection. My first impression was it was spotless, the staff are very friendly and welcoming . The service is excellent. The food is amazing and the range of cakes and their sizes is nothing that I have seen before. We even had a chance to speak with the owner who was very pleasant and friendly. They truly offer a great variety of stock to cater to all tastes. Next time I am going to try the chicken and rice soup and one of the delicious looking cakes . I would highly recommend the hungry gannet.

First class food and always something new to try

Just wanted to say how much we enjoy our toasted tuna sandwiches, we always ask for the bread toasted first, it's how we roll. For our weekend breakfast treat it's a roll & sausage for him and a roll & scrambled egg for me, simple dish but best in Hamilton. Owner & staff always nice. Highly recommend

I was looking for somewhere local to have a brew and a chat with my friends. I thought I'd found it. I've sat in 4 times, 3 for a cuppa and cake, one for lunch. All 4 orders have been wrong. There is no toilet, no self serve sugar or milk for a tea / coffee, owner not happy when we asked for some. Said we ordered wrong then reluctantly took our cups and splashed them back on the table. The staff are great, just a grumpy owner, been the same on all 4 occations I've visited. Food is good and cakes amazing. Have found another venue. If you go, do takeaway or see if the ownner is on a break (seriously)

Saw this place while looking for a cafe to grab a coffee before my next appointment. It is a very busy cafe, has several tables, a extensive selection of food from breakfast to lunch to dinner,all freshly made. They have a lot of regular customers, the staff cannot do enough for you, they are friendly and their banter is excellent. As for prices, what can I say, the dearest thing I seen was The Hungry Gannet Breakfast £14.50 and what a brekky it is. Will definitely be back

3 of us popped in for breakfast and wow it was nicely presented, food quality was very good too and the food portion size were very good too. Tried haggis for 1st time and it was surprisingly gorgeous. Could not fit cake in 😢 unfortunately Would definitely visit again

I eat here often and didn’t think I could be more impressed by the food or the service but yesterday I’d ordered a small sandwich and wrap buffet for some people in the pub. The price for what I got was so good for value and everyone equally impressed, asked me where I got them from. Best cafe I think I have ever been too. It’s worth making a detour too if you don’t live in hamilton.

First visit here with my niece. If I lived in Hamilton I would be there all the time. Fabulous wraps choc a bloc stuffed with delicious fillings. And the salads!! Just wonderful. Worth a journey from Glasgow any day. Thank you.

I absolutely love this place! Food is always so fresh, generous portions. Staff is also so lovely! Best in Hamilton no doubt 😊

Used to be a great wee place but when you serve rubbery potatoe scones and maybe the weakest coffee I've tried 1 star is more than enough. And don't dare ask for a napkin because the server caked in make up might just throw them box at you. Regarding your reply Tahar my wife's skin colour is natural because she's African, and I'm no keyboard warrior. But we'll address that soon. Bit rich coming from a man allowing junkies in the kitchen 😂

This is a great wee coffee shop but have to say I was disappointed today when a guy came in after me, went straight to the head of the line and, despite initially being told that there was a queue, still managed to place his order and sit down ahead of me!

Delicious food and lovely atmosphere!

Wonderful atmosphere, the staff is lovely and helpful. Had the peckish breakfast and can I just say that destroyed me it is very filling. Would recommend to sit in as well its gorgeous and atmosphere is 10/10.

Popped in for some takeaway soup. Queued for just over 5 minutes before being told I need to join a different queue for what I was wanting. Queued for another 5-10 minutes in the "soup queue" waiting for the barrista to make coffee's etc. Finally got served only to be told the soup I wanted wasn't available despite it being hand written on their "specials" board both inside and outside the shop. Walked out laughing at how bad this place is. If you're wanting to grab a quick lunch avoid like the plague.

Went in today for the first time. Service was excellent, coffee was really good, well made nice and strong. The black pudding was absolutely delicious served on a lovely warmed roll. Very reasonably priced - looking forward to my next visit

Absolutely lovely. Excellent simple, comfort food, very tasty, lovely presentation, great, fast service. Lovely coffee. The only thing I would point out to pay attention to is to the fact that cos tables are recycled from large wooden cable drums they have gaps in them and all kinds of crumbs and bits of food falls into them, got to be hoovered up sometimes. Apart from that, perfect!

Small authentic business, food is always good and staff are super friendly. Parking is never been a problem. It’s worth mentioning that the shop only accepts cash payments, but their is a cash machine across the road. It would be good if they accepted card payments for people who are in a rush and want a quick bite to eat but don’t have time to go get cash - sort of becoming a cashless society now so would probably increase income.

From the outside looked like any other cafe in a row of shops opposite Local Council HQ. But walk inside the array of food was simply overwhelming. All baked / cooked on site and extremely friendly service from the lady (owner?) and young man serving. Great coffee and the hot chocolate among the best ever and hot and creamy!

Absolute dive never any stock - what cafe runs out of rolls daily & doesn't do a thing to remedy it? Theres a shop 3 doors down that sell rolls. Staffs attitude is absolutely shocking as seen on previous replies to reviews

The service, quality of food and quantity were first class. The standard breakfast at £4.50 is incredible value and very filling. Thank you for allowing me to swap my link sausage for haggis. Cannot rate The Hungry Gannet highly enough. Amazing value for money.

4 of us went here for Sunday breakfast, my son had already been and loved it. So much delicious food on display for breakfast and the lunch salad, baked potato and pasta bar. It made me hungry just looking at it. The optics with the slushy syrups was unique. I was impressed with the prices , top value, I couldn’t have bought and cooked the food we had cheaper. Not a lot of sitting space however most customers that came in wanted takeaway. Hungry gannet breakfast £12:95 it had 3 of everything and 4 slices of toast. In Hamilton again this week and will definitely be dropping in at least once. If you’ve got a hungry teenager get yourself down there !

Well what can I say. I popped in today for breakfast. I ordered the small breakfast. The ingredients were of great quality and the food delicious. Great price, and surroundings were fab. Definitely will be back for lunch soon.

Chose this from Tripadvisor. Located in a parade of shops out of the Town. About 3 tables inside but as we arrived mid morning we managed to sit down. There is a constant stream of customers buying takeaways which looked promising and we were not disappointed. Service was prompt and the breakfast was lovely. Substantial meal. Not sure who anyone eats the larger offer! Great value for money.

Great food and at a amazing price

we had the most fabulous breakfast here a few weeks back. Firstly, this place has done everything right, from the decor to the food, the portions and the pricing. The owner told me its his first time running a food establishment and unlike jaded tired out cafes, with little care about their service and what they do...The Hungry Gannet has been well thought out with immigration and care. I have just come back from New Zealand where I was blown away by the cafe culture and dreaded going back to the lack lustre food choices we have....then we discovered The Hungry Gannet.....totally fantastic....I only wish he had a shop in EK or franchised, he has revolutionised the usual dreary British cafe and brought standards and imagination back, well done! 😋

You can tell the cost of living is taking its toll. Full breakfast used to come with a tea/coffee and also no Stornoway black pudding either.

First and certainly will not be out last visit. Served by the owner himself. Took time to chat to his customers. First class service from all the team. Good and drinks were if a high quality and at competitor local value. Cake display and selection excellent breakfast items of high standard and speciality dishes choices for all tastes

First time here, clean, nice staff, looks like a good selection of hot and cold rolls/sandwiches/baguettes as well as ice cream and slushies. Bought breakfast, good quality b/rolls that are crisp and light quality b/pudding and sausage. Only gripe would be lazy for me is cash only(there is a cash machine about 5 steps away) and maybe a wee napkin in the bag with the rolls for a messy eater like me, but I should have asked for that 😉 would go again if I'm in the area Update:still a good place to eat, and locals think so too, busy at lunch so either leave time be early 😉

We stopped into this little cafe for a coffee and came away with two of their salad bowls. Priced at £4.40p these were very good value for money and when we got them home there was a wide variety in the salad and plenty of it. We noticed the friendly approach the staff have with t he customers and a few are obviously regulars. Very chatty and good humoured, something that adds greatly to the atmosphere in the place We took a menu with us today as we will make ot a stop on future journeys.

I recently visited The Hungry Gannet and was blown away by the fantastic food. The French toast and club sandwich were absolutely delicious, and the service was very fast, even when the place was busy. The staff were also really friendly and welcoming. My only complaint is that they only accept cash payments, and the online ordering system is never available. As someone who rarely carries cash, it's a bit of a pain to have to withdraw money just to visit this place. I would probably give them more business if they accepted card payments, as the food and service are both excellent. Overall, The Hungry Gannet is a great spot for a delicious meal, but be sure to bring cash.

Phew place is small and it gives of nice vibes. Love the breakfast, and the cakes are just delicious. And I have to mention the milkshakes. During summer I'm a regular.

What a gem and so few would find it! You really don't often find a cafe/takeaway with such a range of fresh, appetising food to meet all tastes. Excellent value for money, great quality food. The menu is vast from all corners of the globe. I really enjoyed the decor, the cosy quirky feel and we were lucky enough to get a table, only 3 tables so get there early. I'd love to have tried the coffee but already had my caffeine quota, and maybe a cake next time! Staff super helpful and I enjoyed feeling like I was supporting a family run business who really care about their products and service. Will be back. Many thanks.

Fabulous find! It’s my husband’s 60th birthday today and I promised him a breakfast out to start the day. We found an absolute gem! Really great start to his birthday. We will be back this is now our favourite breakfast destination!

It doesn't get better than this. Beautiful decor, extensive range of hot and cold food of the highest quality, cakes that are next level and service to match. You can tell that everything is homemade and fresh. The service is impeccable and Taher is an excellent captain of the ship. Best food in Hamilton without a doubt!

We went into this usually good deli for a quick takeaway lunch of pasta. The pasta was really gelatinous, which means that the pasta was not cooked in enough water and the sauce was tasteless and floury, which means that the flour was not cooked out. It all went straight in the bin and we went elsewhere

Lovely food great coffee and cakes

Great choice and value. The hatchling breakfast was great quality and such good value but could do with a mini hatchling option as a whole lotta food.

By far the best breakfast we had since arriving in Scotland. Even with the busy rush hour of the morning the team at the Hungry Gannet were professional, kind and delivering on every breakfast take away or eat in! A lot of happy customers from what we could see. Absolutely delicious, thank you!

I had the occasion to stop in at this venue for something to eat and drink. This was my first visit and what a surprise find. A very quaint layout, rather magical as you enter. Staff, including the owner were very helpful and I was served quickly, with a beautifully made wrap, and bottled water to help it down. The owner is a coffee specialist and although I didn't have one on this occasion I hope to try his specialities some time in the future. Good prices, layout, and service with a smile. Well worth a visit.

Food amazing and the size of the cakes ,loved loved it

Found this place by accident! Great coffee! If you are someone who moans about food being instant then this isn't the place for you, but if you value quality and customer service then you are in the right place. I came back and had a roll and bacon with Stornoway black pudding. The staff are so lovely and the place has a cute vibe
