Fabulous cafe in an excellent garden centre and home interior shop. Had one of the best milkshakes and brownies here, the staff were super friendly too 🙏 I can see a few bad reviews but not sure if they truly reflect this quirky bistro style hidden gem

Well worth the trip from wigan, the food and service was brilliant, the place is spotless, all staff very friendly, food amazing

Took my daughters for Sunday lunch today. We chose the roast beef lunch and it was beautiful, so tasty and reasonably priced. We will be visiting again. Service was pretty fast considering the restaurant was very busy. All good.

This place serves a good Sunday lunch where carnivores and herbivores can be fed. We had to queue for a table but not for long. Service was efficient and friendly.

Appalling customer service ,we arrived at 10.45 am and were seated with breakfast menus handed to us ,at 11.08we were told it was too late for breakfast which finished at 11.00?The staff were too busy arguing about a booking twenty two people for later same day .we were then told lunch menu not available till 11.45 and throughly disappointed as I was looking forward to toasted wild mushrooms with poached egg and parsley ,ended up with two overpriced toasted teacakes instead?On leaving we got charged over £36 for vanilla milkshake and glass of wine with two slices of cake to go,(someone else's food bill) on quering this they found our order still £26 !expensive and terrible customer service,we have been before and staff seem to be constantly arguing between themselves rather than concentrating on serving customers.

The food was really nice and delivered in decent time considering it was busy on a Friday. However, when ordering a jacket potato, the waitress , when asked for an extra plate, informed the party that they were not allowed to provide an extra plate! This was for an 82 year old who has a small appetite and two were sharing a jacket. What this is saying is that they don’t cater for people with small appetites and want you to buy 2 meals and spend another £10. As customers this does not sit well as half of that meal would be wasted. As it happened an additional plate was sourced but what a ridiculous practice. It seems they just want the purchase of extra meals so half would be wasted. As everyone is tightening their belt at this time, the establishment should be more than happy to provide an extra plate even if it meant washing it up when finished!

30 minutes from taking the order to serving a simple fast-food meal! The meal was not as described - tiny chunks of fish meat in soggy batter are not deep-fried whole scampi tails. 45 minutes to remove dirty plates from table with staff walking past at regular intervals. The waffle was outstanding but not delivered at the same time as the other order placed at the same time. The only prompt action was to present the bill. Plenty of staff but so badly managed and was the worst shambles I have seen in over 60 years of eating out. We have been there before without complaint but won't be going again.

Always visit when I visit my friend in Barrow . The restaurant experience was amazing and your staff are a credit to the business

Had breakfast here as they were recommended by The Chequers Lodge, where we were staying. On our first visit we both went for veggie breakfasts, I enjoyed it but found mine a bit greasier than I'm used to. Our waitress served our food without any cutlery or serviettes, instead saying "the cutlery's over there", - I found this rather ignorant as what use is hot food without cutlery? Why couldn't she just bring everything together? Anyway, we returned for breakfast the next morning & this was a much better experience: our waiter (think he was French) was amazingly good & actually brought the cutlery & serviettes with the food. We went for the smashed avocado & it was just amazingly good. Overall a great experience.

Given we had friends who were visiting out of town (2hr) drivetime I decided to ring ahead and try and book a table in advance given we had two small children coming too. Although they typically only accept walk ins during the daytime service, the person on the phone happily obliged and we were able to book. Sadly the service was pretty dire, the poor staff were completely run ragged with huge amounts of customers turning up looking for tables. We were at our table for 25-30mins without anyone coming over to us to offer drinks or take our food order. Kids getting more and more hangry it took quite a few attempts to get attention. Aside from getting our food and drinks order slightly wrong, it was worth the faff and wait and everyone enjoyed it. I feel sorry for the staff, they really were trying their best but without anyone seemingly 'in charge' they were taking more and more people in without any let up. I really think you should return to the old way of having a booking system so you can manage your covers better and bring bills to the table, it would help to alleviate the crazy queuing system along the cake counter to pay/order cake/collect cutlery and condiments. The setup is just bizarre.

The restaurant is modern and clean. I was surprised to see so many plastic plants hanging around though in a garden centre. Shame they didn’t have some real ones. Food was average to good. Prices were above average. Toilets were clean however the toilet roll dispensers were awkward to use. Overall a pleasant t place to go for lunch and I did buy a lovely indoor plant as well.

We came as a family special birthday Afternoon Tea , wow no other words we where shown to our seats and asked what we would like to drink , the staff did warn us that they where short of chefs and kept checking on us we did not have to wait long , the afternoon tea was amazing fresh and beautiful, lovely atmosphere and staff amazing , this was our first visit and will not be our last thank you to the whole team x

The restaurant was busy when we arrived without a booking. We were quickly shown to a table, the staff were efficient and helpful. The food was good and well presented, the portions were large enough to satisfy all in our party and there was a reasonable choice of meals.

Visited here on a recent visit to barrow in furness and on a rainy day visited here. Charming food and staff friendly. Had a vanilla slice and a hot chocolate was amazing so large and great value for money. My husband had a breakfast that he said was delicious x

Visited with family here for lunch. Very warm and inviting atmosphere and interesting menu. I opted for the Cajun Creamy Chicken and it was excellent (though not a true cajun heat, in my opinion). Dessert case looked amazing but we chose not to indulge. Lovely service too!

The name change and refurbishment are new, but the story is old.. The Bakehouse' aka Charnleys cafe is the same old story. No waitstaff to be seen for 10-minutes (had to order at the counter). Slow service. Stocky dirty health hazard at the cutlery and condiments' station. Out of key items such as bread! Miserly presentation with big prices. Served undercooked raw egg and floppy bacon instead of 'crispy' requested. Bathroom redesign is a fiasco with a door that didn't lock upon arrival, and unxepectedly locked when trying to exit. It must be a nightmare for their core customers which seems to be retired people. All of the money wasted on refurb should have been spent on staff and food instead.

Allow me to clear some stuff up. At a first glance, yes, some of the items on the menu in the café may seem expensive, but, after ordering my meal, it was not only swiftly delivered but the quality and quantity of the food served on both the breakfast / lunch menu and the dinner menu greatly outweighs it's price tag. The whole experience was enjoyable throughout due to the varied selection of main meals, sweet treats and other snacks. Furthermore, the staff were friendly and ensured us a relaxed and happy atmosphere. Thank you Charnley's for an incredible time!

We have had two take out deliveries, both terrible. On both occasions they were an hour delayed from our booking time. Second occasion was sent a raw burger! Will not be going again.

Pre-booked afternoon tea - no fruit scones available. Then waited 30 mins before asking why we hadn't received it - our drinks were by now lukewarm only to be told they'd been busy and we're now preparing it. When it eventually arrived we were given complimentary prosecco which was a nice touch. Later I asked two separate staff members for more coffee but ended up having to go to the counter because they both forgot. The staff were busy but nobody asked if we needed anything. We were the last diners but couldn't get anyone's attention as they were all busy cleaning, ready to close ( it was only 4.15). A real shame - the food was good but the service was very poor.

Well I was suitably very impressed with my afternoon tea. All great quality elements and little touches like fresh fruit, crisps and salad leaves which was very welcome as AT's can be quite bready and carb based. The halloumi fries were delicious and when I stated I was veggie they made extra efforts to accomodate. Thank you very much for restoring my faith in afternoon teas, best one around. Will be back! Staff were also lovely and quick to serve.

Such a shame that the owner/manager is not enforcing covid security. Wearing a visor is pointless if it’s worn like a cap and doesn’t prevent staff talking and exhaling over customers. Also no request to check into the venue on arrival or throughout visit plus witnessed same for other customers. Set an example for the rest of the hospitality trade unless management and staff can afford further lockdowns. Very inconsiderate to the few staff who are trying to comply and do things right.

Had pre booked a table for myself and my mum for our usual xmas lunch together. Had temperature taken upon arrival, not a problem, and were shown to our table. Restaurant was busy as expected following reopening after latest lockdown. As soon as we sat down we were aware things were not good.Our table had not been properly cleaned with crumbs still on which I had to brush away. There was absolutely no atmosphere considering it was the lead up to the festive season. Just cheesy xmas music playing. No decs, tree nothing. Every year we’ve been there’s been something. We’d been given plastic menus, fine, but we were looking forward to trying some of the many festive drinks advertised online and weren’t told anything, we didn’t even have a drinks menu just had to guess. We were asked for our order fairly promptly but my mum wanted to try a cake but wasn’t sure she could get up to see them in the counter. When we asked the waitress told her yes as long as she had her mask on, again not a problem. The waitress returned to say I couldn’t have the banana milkshake I’d ordered as they’d ran out of bananas? It was 2pm. Ok I opted for strawberry instead.Then while we waited we began to notice a lot of unrest and three separate tables complained about where their meals/drinks were?! One lady asked for a discount. We then had to wait around 40 minutes, even then when my food arrived we had to ask where my mums was? How difficult is it to bring two diners plates together.We weren’t offered salt, pepper, vinegar, sauce nothing which I would have appreciated. My ham egg and chips were quite tasteless unfortunately. Several chips undercooked, egg was watery and ham, very little. All for £11! Mum enjoyed hers though which I was thankful for as it was her treat. Waiting staff were dashing around all over the place and no same person seemed to serve anyone in particular just who ever caught their eye. As you weren’t able to get up from your table people were sitting around in coats waiting to pay their bills.All in all not a great experience and we used to look forward to coming here so much. Sadly now no ambience, very overpriced and disappointing. No hurry to return sorry.

Ordered an afternoon tea through Barrow Eats and was thoroughly satisfied. Great value for money as there was such a large selection of food. Not usually a pork pie person but it was delicious as was the sausage roll. Variety of sandwiches: cream cheese and cucumber, ham and tomato, ham and garlic Mayo and cheese and tomato. Had my fair share of scones and I would definitely rate the scone in my top 5 tastiest scones. Loved all of the traybakes and have to say the meringues were probably my favourite thing - would definitely order again. Only fault was the tomatoes used in the sandwiches, much prefer a plum or piccolo, as far more flavoursome than a watery buffalo tomato - but that’s just my personal preference. Overall very enjoyable :)

We had pre booked Charnley’s for Lunch at 2:15pm on a Sunday Afternoon, first of all our drinks order was wrong, we ordered a draught Pepsi & Pepsi max and received 2 regular Pepsi’s, one draught and one in a bottle? Didn’t mind too much though. We ordered our food at 2:30pm and didn’t received our food until 3:20pm, we were absolutely starving & I was just about to tell the waiting staff it didn’t matter & to forget the order we’d go elsewhere but luckily the food arrived just as I was about to get up. We ordered a lasagna & creamy chicken pasta bake with S&P chips to share - pasta’s were nice but chips were £4 and literally just oven chips with the butchers salt and pepper seasoning on - not sure if it’s just me but when paying £4 for restaurant quality s&p chips I’d expect some onions, peppers, maybe chilli in with the chips? Not just a bit of seasoning sprinkled on top, the chips hadn’t even been cooked with the seasoning for god sake! Wouldn’t rush back.

Visited with my son for lunch and coffee and cakes.Firstly, we were told they had ran out of all soup, even though it was only 1pm.We then waited 30 minutes for coffee and cakes. When we enquired about the delay, we were told they couldn't find our order.When the order finally arrived, they then said they'd given one of our orders (scone and jam) to another customer, and now didn't have any left. They also missed part of our order. The cream for the apple pie was also cold, even though I asked for it warm.You also can't now order at the counter, you have to wait at your table. The problem is, there's no system to make sure anyone actually comes to your table. So you end up having to get up and find a member of staff yourself.The cafe has added lots more tables to make more money. But they don't have the organisation, staff or procedures to be able to cope with properly managing and serving food for the inceased capacity. It's a complete disorganised shambles.

Went today to have a look around the Christmas displays, pre-booked a table for 3 at 12.45, we were early and had an addition to our party, not a problem for the staff who were very accommodating, temperatures taken and details for track and trace were given. Shown to our table with menus, after maybe 3 minutes drinks order taken and brought to table around 5 minutes later, restaurant was extremely busy and the staff never stopped. Food order taken when drinks were brought to the table, I will admit there was quite a wait, but it was well worth it, if my food had come to the table any quicker I would have been very suspicious about how “fresh” it was maybe “microwaved”? Spaghetti Carbonara looked delicious, the ham&cheese sandwich that my husband had and the chicken and chorizo sandwich that I had were also very tasty, we made the mistake of ordering 2 bowls of chips to accompany our meals, 1 would have been more than plenty. Staff were very attentive throughout, and very kindly brought us carry out boxes for the leftovers enough for another meal. Will definitely be back. Thanks for a lovely meal

Got shown to our table, was empty only a few tables occupied. The waitress showed 3 other groups to their tables and did their drinks orders and got their drinks before we had even got our order taken. 30mins had passed with the waitress dodging our eyeline to go sit at a table of friends, so we just left.

The service was shambolic, get better service at McDonald's on a Sunday afternoon. Definitely won't be going back to waste another hour waiting for my plates to get taken away in an empty restaurant. Staff are incompetent.

Went for lunch yesterday, food was fine but they made a mistake with the order. Have just returned home after having Sunday lunch with my wife and daughter in the cafe at Charnleys Home and Garden. We arrived and were shown to a very wobbly table and asked a member of staff to put something under the table leg - that didn’t happen. We then ordered three Sunday roasts and we waited. After waiting approx 40 minutes, and trying to attract the attention of staff we eventually spoke to someone. She never came back. We then waited again and then eventually spoke to a different member of staff and she came back and told us that the next roasts would be ours. However that didn’t happen! They were served to the people opposite us, and who had arrived after us. So we waited again! Then the next roasts went to the people in front of us!So we then spoke to a different staff member and she said that the reason for the delay was that they had experienced a very busy breakfast service and this made them get behind. However we were offered free desserts!Then we had to ask another totally different member of staff to stop the still wobbling table. Hurray! She stopped it wobbling.Then the long awaited meals finally arrived.We fully understood that the staff were working very hard but the service was totally unacceptable. We would have preferred a trouble free lunch rather than free desserts.Totally underwhelming! I will not be going back there again!!

We have been visiting Charnleys since it opened and absolutely loved it,however we have visited today and were very disappointed! The menu is poor seems like pasta and pizza have taken over from some regular foods. We waited over an hour for soup and a sandwich which I must say were awful the soup was so thick and the sandwich was some sort of a hard roll and I mean hard! Please go back to proper sandwiches I really struggled to eat it and I don’t class myself as old certainly not ideal! Lovely surroundings but poor food! Badly organised for distancing with the regulations.

All 3 meals arrived freshly prepared and really good sized portions.Overall first class lunch and wouldn’t hesitate for a second to return. Good food, good value, good atmosphere and good staff and service. Highly recommend

Awesome new menu and food. Pizza’s had fresh “real” toppings and hot and fresh from the stone oven. Kids food was excellent and very reasonable (£4.95 including a drink, £1 extra for ice cream). We shared waffles for pudding and were out of this world. Nice relaxing atmosphere, Covid was taken seriously ( temp check, cleaning and well spaced tables). Cannot fault the service and professionalism. Will be back soon

Visited the new Bakehouse this evening for a family members birthday! Food was unreal, we tried the new Italian dishes carbonara, seafood pizza, al forno and lasagna...with waffles to finish! Can’t wait to visit again, amazing!

We needed to be fairly quick and have "sustenance" and this was perfect although I imagine it would have taken longer if we'd chosen the busy time. So very refreshing to have something unusual on the menu. Not a massively difficult thing to prepare but it was cooked well and was very tasty. Showed care and imagination. An Aubergine bake with pesto and very varied, colourful & fresh salad platter.

I went here today with my friend for brunch. I’ve been in the past and normally just got a scone or drink but with being there earlier I decided to get something off the breakfast menu. I just had cheese on toast and my friend had poached egg and avocado on bread. The food was lovely. The bread is all homemade and this just added to the quality of the food. We then had a cake afterwards and had half each of 2 different cakes and again couldn’t fault the taste and quality. The full menu started at 11.30 am and covers a great range of options. The service we received was great and I’d recommend going here

Popped in here unexpectedly for lunch. We had two lovely soups and a jacket potatoe. Food was very good but not quite sure why we were given so much bread. It was really not necessary. Good value for money.

I went into Charnleys today to browse the shop and on walking in there was three people sat at reception, two women and a man. The man was rather loudly telling the women all about his “physical relations” with his partner (or not as he preferred a less committed relationship, as I heard) - the shop and cafe were relatively busy and they were talking so unprofessionally in earshot of everyone.

I don't recognise the first review in your heading. The service we have on a continuous basis is good, the food is good and well prepared.and reasonably priced. The service is excellent and well organised. I have never known the restaurant be even partially empty and have never heard anyone say a bad word about it apart from one of your previous commentators. (I live locally and visit regularly)

We fell into this lovely garden centre after we travelled a long way to the Safari across the road (wouldn’t recommend going there!) Definitely worth a visit whilst the Christmas decorations are all up- we spent a fortune!! The cafe was heaving and I can see why! Food was lovely with a wide variety of choice. Would highly recommend a trip out.

Had a lovely afternoon with a feiend. We booked the festive afternoon tea... it came well presented on a cute little bench. The hot element in the halloumi and pig in blanket pasty was a fantastic edition, everything was fresh and plain to see and taste that it was all homemade. Coffee was of an excellent quality and the staff were all very polite and attentive. The cafe was full to capacity but the service or quality was never compromised. Well done Team Charnleys

It was a great luncheon if not a bit slow with service, however it was lunch time and they were full. The lady on the till was very helpful suggesting a smaller portion for my daughter. Will definately go again.

Usually busy, not a lot of room to move around with tables quite close together, larger dining area up three steps. Order and pay at the counter then wait for your food, today had to wait 30mins although coffee came after 10mins. Very nice toasted sandwich served with a dollop of coleslaw and small salad, the homemade bread was very tasty. Quite pricey for what is on offer but food is consistent. Cakes look lovely but am not really a cake person. Lovely display of all the Christmas stuff.

Beware the afternoon tea vouchers expire after 3 months, and the cafe shuts at 4:30 (it's the garden centre that is open until 5:30)I booked the tea in the morning to ensure they had everything for our afternoon visit at 3. A table was reserved for us and the tea was lovely. Four types of finger sandwiches, fruit scone with jam and clotted cream, a meringue and 3 other mini cakes.Staff friendly and helpful.A box was provided so I could take the scone home!Would certainly go back again with friends but book an earlier time slot so not to be so near closing time.

My friend and I went here for lunch, we didn't book but managed to find a table. We both had the tuna melt and a glass of Pepsi. The tuna melt was £8.95, came with a spoonful of coleslaw and a bit of salad, definitely not worth it. I've paid less in other cafes and the buns were bigger. Not worth that amount of money. The shop is lovely so I will stick to that in future.

My partner and I had the large breakfast great quality ingredients - 2 thick slices of bacon, swirl of thin Cumberland sausage, fresh tomatoes, black pudding, hash brown, fried egg, 2 very tasty field mushrooms and 2 slices thick toast with butter. Cannot fault any of it was beautifully cooked and I would recommend it to anyone. They also do small version and vegetarian version and breakfast buns etc.,

Went for lunch with friends,one had ham eggs and chips and found the ham nice but slimy eggs were off putting. My second friend had s the cheddar cheese sandwich and found it acceptable. I had the burger with added Stilton cheese. The burger was dry and tasteless in addition I could not taste the Stilton although I new a little had been used as there were tiny spots of blue in the bun.
