Cromwell Tandoori in Basingstoke and Deane

A friend and I attended this restaurant last night. The food was good and the service was good. Sadly, overnight I have been very unwell and not been able to control my bowels. I checked in with my friend who came with me, he has also been up all night unwell with the same symptoms. Food poisoning is no joke and now I'm off work for the day. Would not attend again or recommend others do. The restaurant is waiting for food hygiene inspection currently.

Just picked up a takeaway and I can honestly say it’s the nicest one I’ve had for a long long time

First time ordering from this restaurant and the last ! Delivery was very slow, food was tepid. Butter chicken and butter vegetables were both tasteless, swimming in coconut milk and less than mediocre. Prices are expensive for what you get. Not worth it !! Will order from Tuli or Spicy Tadka in future.

Absolutely excellent food. Fresh and top quality. Wonderful veg, meat and naans ! With polite, prompt, professional and friendly service. Quiet as it was Saturday lunchtime. Easy parking.

The food from here is absolutely amazing always! So flavoursome and the chef’s really tailor the food to how you want it. Service levels are exceptional. They really go above and beyond for you here!

Just had a wonderful meal here. Gave it a go instead of my normal as my normal place has gone down hill. What an amazing surprise! The sag paneer was to die for and the Bombay potatoes were delicious. The rogan Josh is amazing and I tried a new dish I can’t even spell. The service was fantastic. Not to mention I absent mindedly forgot my take away bag and this fabulous resturant was able to work miracles and drop it at my door as I had signed up for a great night in November with live music. Can not thank these guys enough! This is 1000% my new go to Indian in Basingstoke!

I have never tasted such bad indian food as this. The butter chicken was literally just tomato sauce with 10 pounds of butter lurking on top. After eating this food I felt so much stomach discomfort! Never again!

UPDATE: Lowering to one star as the company is now sending unsolicited marketing text messages in violation of GDPR regulation. Reported to ICO too. I’m afraid after having previously good experiences, we just had a distinctly poor takeaway from Cromwell Tandoori. At pick up there was some commotion about the naan, resulting in the staff running after a previous customer to swap his and my naan over (after it had left the restaurant, not good guys). This was unfortunate, because it meant I didn’t get the garlic naan I ordered, it was in fact plain. The onion bhajis seemed raw, the curry’s were both flavourless and watery. The whole thing was extremely disappointing, and I expected better from here.

Lovely takeaway, good service, good value. The only curry house we could find in Basingstoke that would take the order over the 'phone, so we could be sure of getting what we wanted. Thanks Cromwell, we'll be back.

Delicious Cromwell special, chicken curry. Mild but you can really taste different spices. It definitely has a distinctive taste. One of the best Peshawar naan breads I've ever had. Masala sauce was delicious. The king prawns were slightly overcooked. Not quite as nice as the last time we had it here. The daal was lovely but probably a dish too far for the two of us and we couldn't finish it. Great for sharing, lots of garlic in it.

Great food, excellent service but it’s a very big place and often quiet so the atmosphere is what you make it at your table.

Takeaway order vegan menu, the biryani was great, the curry with it was a little under seasoned but prefer that to over seasoned. Worked with the rice. Good portion too. Vegan tikka masala wouldn’t order again, prominent coconut flavour no depth. Excited to try some more vegan options in the restaurant. The food arrived quickly & hot to Chineham.

First time visiting Cromwell Tandoori, the food was excellent, service was really good. Restaurant was busy but the wait times were very reasonable. The building has a really nice atmosphere too. Will definitely be returning.

Everything was extremely bland. No flavour. The chunky onions in my curry hadnt been cooked properly. Very crunchy. Need to up your game a bit im afriad.

Food was great; Delivery was terrible. Driver didn't arrive at location, parked car far away. I had to walk 5 mins in the cold n rain to the car to pick up.

Delicious food and very attentive service.

First time using this restaurant. We had takeaway for 3 people. I had a king prawn biryani, which was OK, but bland. A lamb tikka karai's lamb was tough and at times grissely. My wife seemed to enjoy her veg chilli garlic dish. At £38 I probably won't repeat the experience.

I order and collect a takeaway from here every few weeks and I've never been disappointed. The staff are always friendly and polite, my order is provided quickly, and the food is always delicious.

We ordered take out for collection. Really tasty and quick. Only waited about 20 mins to collect, very good. Especially enjoyed the saag aloo

If you like Indian food then get yourself to the Cromwell, had the best curry I've ever eaten (And I've had a lot). So much choice, lovely staff. Good deal on a Sunday. Anna the Narn bread id yum! Well all of it is. Found our new favourite restaurant!!

Starter was very good, lots of flavour. Main was boring, looked like soup with a few bits of rubbery chicken. 3 course meal...... starter, main and side! No pudding. Cost more than £80. Took a long time to get the bill and pay.

A delightful Indian and our first time trying it since we moved to the area. Food was piping hot and very tasty. Slightly longer on collection then the app said but the owner was very apologetic and offered me a half pint of cobra on the house. The inside looked great and I definitely intend to return for a dine in meal with the family. Would definitely recommend. Good options for vegetarian and vegan diets.

Wow what a difference since the new mangerment took over. We have been a few times as its not our local but since new menu/mangerment the food has most certainly gone up a few levels. From start (poppadoms and dips) to the amazing floater coffee to finish; everything was excellent. They have put lots of effort into everything, from the new menu to the quality of the food. It was a little quiet which is a shame it deserves to be busy (it was early so guessing after 8 could be very busy). If you go you won't be disappointed with the quality and quantity of food you receive; full of flavour. Staff are super friendly, polite and friendly too, they do not automatically add tip onto your bill like most places, so please leave a tip if you enjoyed your food and service as they do deserve it. Also for the older generation they do the best floater coffee. Easy booking system online too which was easy and quick to do.

Food was absolutely delicious. The fish curry is the best I’ve had and there is a great array for veggies and vegans. The prices were reasonable and the quality was top notch. We can’t wait to eat here again.

Since under new management this place is excellent, the food, service and atmosphere is amazing. Definitely recommend if your looking for real fresh indian food with a wide range of great vegan and vegetarian options on the menu.

This place really does some fantastic food. The staff are friendly and set in a unique building. Never been unsatisfied with any of their dishes. Full of flavour!

We are new to the area and live in Sherfield on Loddon. We are really impressed with the quality of the food. We live a long way from the restaurant so delivery can be a bit slow and not very warm, but the food is very good

New ownership, new chef. Our first time here in a long time and we were highly impressed. The food and service were impeccable. Really enjoyed our meal here and will certainly be returning.

My partner and I visited here Saturday night whilst having a little get away. We both a bit dubious at first as we are both very hard to please. On arrival we were made to feel welcome and the building was amazing inside. We were shown to our table and given the menus which had plenty of choice. We ordered our food and waited, not very long either we had our starters and everything tasted so fresh, so we waited a little longer and our mains arrived. We had onion bhaji which were the best ones we have ever tried, again so fresh tasting hardly any grease and melt in the mouth batter, the naans were light and fluffy (most naans we have seem a bit doughy) and the curries wow on another level. Again fresh tasting plenty of flavours , just the right amount of heat And plenty of meat , the rice was also tasty. The only complaint I have is that I am in Southampton and its a bit far for a daily. But a monthly may be on the cards as its well worth it

Normally go here for takeout quiet often, I won't again after tonight. Been sat in the restaurant for 30 minutes, I ordered online at 19:57, its now 21:22... and I wasn't the only one waiting, the restaurant itself is empty and as an ex restaurant manager, I struggle to see how they're keeping afloat.

Great food and wonderful staff! Vegan options are amazing! Only had takeaway so far but inside the restaurant looks great, will definitely be bringing family for a meal out in the near future!

I've eaten literally thousands of Indian meals in the UK over more than three decades and I can honestly say that tonight's dinner was probably the best I've ever had... seriously first-class, no kidding. Honestly one of the worst takeaways I have ever had. I very rarely leave reviews, but it was so bad, so here we are haha. Very over priced for what I received, half of it inedible and the parts that were, were so incredibly bland. Seems there’s a lot of issues with the new management from what I’ve read online. The food also took over 2 hours to arrive. I reached out to the restaurant multiple times on email, all of which were ignored. Absolute waste of money DO NOT ORDER FROM HERE!!!

We were a party of 5 today and we tried their Banquet. Amazing food, probably the best Indian food we have eaten! Great service and attentiveness too. We will be back! Great trying new dishes, such a delicious varied menu. Definitely recommend

I've used this restaurant many times before and have been very impressed with the quality of the dishes so I placed an order this evening due to receiving a leaflet through the letterbox with new meals and 'under new management'. My order never arrived so I phoned the restaurant and he said they were closed due to a kitchen refurbishment and I will get my money back within 14 days. Why are they still taking money and orders from people when they are closed??? We have always been loyal customers to this place but will not be using them again due to the incompetence of the 'new management '

ordered for takeaway, waited two hours and no food arrived, called restaurant and they advised can we wait another 10 minutes so we did. Food arrived at home all hot and looked lovely, chicken very watery and tasted funny. Couldn't eat it and emailed restaurant, yet to have a reply.

Awful. We booked a table for 3 people at 6pm. We arrived and there were 2 other small tables before us plus about 3 people waiting to collect takeaways. We have eaten here prior to the take over and never had a problem. We had a new menu posted through the door so thought we would give it a go. We had been sat down for about 20 minutes before anyone came and took our order. It was another 20 minutes before drinks arrived. I assume the gentleman behind the bar was the new manager and he was more interested in answering the phone and taking orders instead of those of us sat in the restaurant. There was a lady behind the bar who did very little and kept saying to people it wasnt her job so she could not help, she did not appear to do anything though. An hour and 40 minutes before we got our starter.....by this time the manager was telling people it would be 50 minutes to an hour before they got served!! Several tables got up and walked out, people came in to cancel takeaway orders as it had been 2 hours and still no food. People were still waiting after 2 hours to collect takeaways, when they asked for a refund they kept being told their food would be 5 minutes. Customers came back as the takeaway orders were wrong or missing dishes. The food was lovely, really tasty but we ended up being there for over 3 hours in the end!! If you are short of staff stop taking phone orders or shut the restaurant but most important of all let your customers know there is an issue and there is a long wait on the food.

Wanted to try the food here for ages. I ordered online and was told it would be 40 minutes for collection. I turned up 40 minutes later to see a restaurant of very hungry and unhappy looking people. Many were seated and had been waiting well over an hour for anybody to even approach their tables and take their orders. A huge number simply walked out. There was a queue of around 9 people waiting to collect an ordered takeaway alongside me who were equally waiting as long! The staff simply kept going round to everyone and asking for their name over and over again. After standing there for an hour, I complained it had been nearly 2 hours since I had ordered. They again just asked my name. After another 20 minutes I finally received my food only to get home and see an entire meal was missing! The meals we did receive were cold and so unpleasant to eat. Shame, because I had high hopes for the place but they lost ALOT of customers and angered many more tonight. I simply couldn’t be bothered to return again to collect my missing meal and complain about how cold it was. I will never return and will tell everyone to avoid this place.

New management have taken over June 2022....I ate at the Cromwell for the first time tonight with friends, service was fantastic felt so welcomed by all of the staff. The food was gorgeous and very good portions, will definitely be going again.

My wife and I came here for dinner and we were served by Muhammad who took over the restaurant 6 weeks ago. It should be noted that any reviews posted prior to May 2022 should now be disregarded as they're no longer relevant - under Muhammad's ownership, this is effectively a new restaurant. Just to say, I'm not easily pleased and I always expect high standards of cuisine, service and ambience when I dine out. All of the food we ordered was utterly superb, the service was impeccable and the building (which is grade II listed, dating back to the 1500s) just oozes authentic charm and character. Muhammad made us feel extremely welcome, he's courteous, professional and super-friendly. All of this made for a fabulous dining experience and we're just so pleased that, at long last, we have an excellent Indian restaurant right on our doorstep. One final point... previous reviews mentioned that the restaurant didn't serve alcohol. Now that Muhammad has taken over, the restaurant has an alcohol licence and they most definitely serve alcoholic drinks. Thanks for great evening Muhammad, really appreciated! Matthew

Very lively staff and food. Always hate leaving!

We came here for a celebratory dinner and loved every bit of it! The staff were friendly and food was beautifully presented delicious - best onion bhajis I have ever had by far. The decor was tasteful and the indoor fountain made for a nice, relaxing environment. We will be returning I have no doubt!

Fabulous experience as usual. Took some colleagues from another country, who were not so experienced with Indian food. The waiter (maybe the boss) suggested a mixed selection of starters for my guests to enable them to gain the most from their visit. Food was plentiful and a good price for the area

I have had a few takeaway’s in my time! Born and bred in Basingstoke I was raised on the 4 main food groups; Chinese, kebab, pizza & Indian! Now I recognise I’m putting myself out there to be shot down but for me, and this is my opinion granted . . . What the Cromwell gets absolutely spot on is that when you order an Indian, you’re hungry right? Food always arrives within 30-45mins, pipping hot, the driver brings the tappy tappy card reader, hands over the food, tab, boom, on the plate and into the stomach, bosh! If he forgets the card reader, no bother, gives me the food, rings me an hour later and takes my card details over the phone, great customer service! This is all I need, there are over takeaway’s out there who simply don’t understand this concept and this is why I will always order from the Cromwell when I fancy myself a ruby!
