Popped in here for a coffee as I'm currently on crutches, and my wife had gone to walk the dog. I was told there's a minimum £5 purchase to pay via card (a real pet peeve of mine). I almost left, but a waitress suggested I buy a bottle of water to make up the amount. Foolishly, I agreed. Sat down, and realised that Wells has the worst mobile coverage ever, so no Internet and barely a phone signal. The coffee arrived, and I asked if there was WiFi, but there was not. So now I'm on my own, with no reading material, and no Internet, in quite a dreary cafe. I took a few sips and decided to abandon it and go elsewhere (ending up in Costa, despite preferring to support independents). I gave it 2 stars because the coffee (the small amount I drank) was actually very nice.

On seeing the gluten free options available we stopped here first for coffee and decided to return for lunch. It’s a busy place, with some nice outside seating. I can’t tell you just how good it is for gluten free. They were very attentive. That my two girls could have a toastie and not worry about cross contamination is a real bonus. 4 cakes available AND gluten free ice cream cones. We love coming to the Bath and Wells area on holiday and this has gone on our list of a must come to place for the future. Thank you so much. We had a very enjoyable day in Wells and your cafe was very much part of that.

So good that I came here for lunch two days in a row. Just when I thought that Wells was a culinary desert, apart from Fatso's Wednesday-Sunday evenings, I find this little gem. I sat outside, on my return visit, all of the outside tables were taken, so they set up another...service! Prawn sandwich and two types of wine, simply the best! Cake for pud, can't go wrong.

The Market Place Cafe in Wells is an absolute gem! From the moment we walked in, we were greeted by friendly staff and a bustling atmosphere filled with locals and a few tourists—a sure sign of a great spot. It is located conveniently close to the Cathedral, the cafe offers the perfect respite after exploring the historic sights of Wells. We couldn't resist trying their Sticky Toffee Biscoff cake, and oh my goodness, it was pure indulgence. The combination of sticky toffee and Biscoff flavours was a match made in heaven—a true delight for the taste buds and their caramel shortbread, was a revelation. The caramel layer ensured that the shortbread remained moist and delicious—a perfect balance of sweetness and texture. And last but certainly not least, we had to try one of their pasties, and let me tell you, it was a game changer. Hands down the best pasty we had on our entire 28-day trip—flaky pastry filled with savory goodness, it was simply divine.

visited this cafe last week. Was not sure if it was a cafe or ice cream parlour from the outside. went in , sign says please wait to be seated. I waited no one bothered with, or even acknowledged me, do s customer said just take as seat. I did , even then i had to go and ask for service. The two servers seemed fairly new, but ,seemed to be dominated by some young girl making the coffee. My server was pleasant and i am sure she could manage to put through a bacon sandwich and a cup of tea. The tea was weak, cheap tea bag, bacon sandwich i reckon on tesco wholemeal bread, with sauce slopped on top, which i did ask for. Being a place like wells there are many tourists, so to them its i suppose a numbers game. Went a few doors up had coffee, and was welcomed, what a difference., the owner of crofters was only worried about her parcel. Never again.

Looking somewhere for lunch, we decided to try this cafe right on the market square. All staff were young people and they do their generation great credit - everyone was helpful and polite and competent. We were slightly eaely for lunch service so we started with cake, there was even a choice of gluten-free sweets! We tried the ‘courgette and avocado’ cake which tastes like nice carrot cake (both gluten and dairy free), and a ‘normal’ victoria sponge which was delicious too. For lunch we had a ‘normal’ tuna mayo cheese panini and a gluten free and dairy free jacket potato with tuna mayo topping. The ‘freefrom’ meal was marked with a sticker, all staff were clued up on allergens. The cafe is dog friendly and our dog got a treat too. We had a very enjoyable meal.

Ate outside here for lunch. Food was lovely (sandwiches and chips), but 2 of the sandwiches came toasted for some reason. Strange layout inside - the credit card machine is next to the door, so people queuing behind you have to move out of the way in order for you to pay this way. Outside tables were too small for 4 people eating. Crockery was not being tidied away very quickly outside and the light wind was whisking away all the menus and table numbers. These too weren’t being picked up by staff. Wouldn’t say I’d be rushing back here.

Wanted a light lunch and found this cafe in the marketplace. Was pleased it was well organised with its virus protection, sanitisers, only one customer inside at once and disposable food containers. We sat outside on the pavement and ate an assortment of sandwiches. I particularly enjoyed my Prawn Rose Marie on brown which came with some salad and nachos in a preformed polystyrene container with wooden knife and fork. When we were finished all the debris went into a large bin which I noticed was emptied regularly while we were there. Prices as expected in a busy tourist spot and service was good. Would recommend.

Of course in this coronavirus lockdown, no restaurants are open as yet. We came to Wells just for a trip out and a change of scene, and naturally began to feel a bit peckish, so the only thing was to have an ice cream. We saw the Market Place Cafe was open with a small queue outside. So I joined the queue and bought us an ice cream each, a mint chocolate chip for my companion, and a chocolate heaven for myself. They were delicious. There weren't many places to sit, as we weren't allowed to sit in the cafe and all the outside benches were occupied, so we perched on the edge of the war memorial wall (not sure this is allowed). Anyway, we had a lovely day in Wells and thoroughly enjoyed our ice creams. The serving lady was very jolly, too.

I have been to this cafe many time over the years as I live in Wells and on the odd occasion I have felt dissatisfied with the service but today I was disgusted.. I went with my mum for lunch, I am coeliac with a dairy intolerance so when I saw it was 'vegan day' I was so pleased! I ordered our food and asked if they could check if the mayonnaise in the tuna jacket is dairy free, the girl called the kitchen and she was told they didn't know! It is a legal requirement to know what ingredients and allergens are in every single one of your items. I decided as I had eaten the tuna mayo before I should be ok.. I'd also ordered a almond milk hot chocolate, bearing in mind I'd said I was dairy intolerant, I was allowed to order this item with no information offered so I thought no more of it. Until I watched the miserable older lady making the hot drinks put 3 scoops of chocolate curls into a cup!? To wish I HAD to say is that chocolate, I ordered a hot chocolate.. She replied yes it is we don't have chocolate powder! No apology or an acknowledgement that it was the cafes fault not mine and even scowled at me as though I was being unreasonable! I said I'm sorry I can't have that as I said I can't have dairy, can I have an appletiser instead to which she snapped at the girl serving me to pass me an appletiser (which has now cost me £1.15 more than advertised due to the switch, no offer of a refund and still no apology).. We ate our food and left, no refund for the cheaper drink I received and I felt too upset to go and talk to the miserable lady again.. I have been in the hospitality industry for 25 years and this member of staff didn't smile at all through the whole of my visit at anyone staff or customers! Your staff needs training on allergens, customer service and need to learn to smile and engage with the public.. I will not be returning and I will not recommend this cafe in the future..

We are relatively local to the area and it is the 1st time we have visited this place . It's nothing special and it's just a mediocre Cafe offering nothing special in terms of service or menu. What put me off this place after requesting a small and simple cheese sandwich for our 1 year old grand daughter whilst we ate and we were served this ( pic ) and charge £3.75 for it - despite our party of 3 adults ordering other items from their full price menu. We did ask if that price for that sandwich was correct but their staff didn't seem to be able to give an answer and ignored uis until we left . In summary this place is expensive and it offers poor value for money. We waited 10 mins to place order at their counter (no table service). Their 'till staff ( x 3) didn't inspire much confidence and they seemed to lack initiative. In summary high prices taking advantage of the tourist/visitor trade to this popular town. We wont be back . I'd recommend the Crown Hotel directly across the road where there is a much better atmosphere , more variety on their menu , service is better all the same or lower prices for similar items.

Our visit was mixed. We went for lunch on a busy Saturday. Found a table without any problem and placed our orders. I ordered a smoked salmon and cream cheese sandwich and my husband ordered prawn sandwich. His was fine but mine was not right. The smoked salmon was pale beige and smelt very odd. It had a weird texture like it had been defrosted. It tasted very odd.I took it out of the sandwich and put it on the side of the plate. I told the young waiter who was very sweet and went and told the cook. He came back out and said the cook will do you another one if you like but by that time i didn't really want it anymore as it made me feel a bit sick looking at it! I ate the sandwich with the cream cheese and the side salad and told him not to worry as I didn't want to make a big fuss. I think it would have been nice if the cook or a manager had come over though before we left. My husband said his sandwich was ok though so maybe I was just unlucky. The coffee was very good.

The shop was busy but we were served quickly. The coffee was decent and the shortbread was enough to keep me going. It wasn’t anything special though. I think the staff were overrun as the tables were piling up with previous guests coffee cups and plates. A queue began to form and I saw potential customers leave rather than continue to wait. Visited this cafe whilst visiting Wells. We ordered two wholemeal cheese baguettes and, in fairness, the lady serving me did ask if we wanted the baguette hot or cold. We chose cold, BIG MISTAKE as when it arrived the roll was obviously uncooked, doughy and probably straight from the packet. This was worst cheese baguette we've ever had, and we've had lots in the past. So basically waited what seemed ages (God only knows how much longer if we'd asked for it hot!!!), wasn't cheap and when we complained there was no offer of refund (not a problem as I won't be back) only that they come in half baked and that's what you get if you ask for cold. Only non chain café we could find in Wells-other than the Cathedral. Enjoyed smoked salmon and cream cheese bagette-friend had tasty jacket potato .May have a problem going to the bathroom if disabled-up 2 steps. Lovely black lab laying by his owner while he enjoyed his meal.

The food here is tasty & the portions generous. I had the scampi & chips, which was about £9. However,I think it was value for money as I had plenty of scampi & chips, along with a good portion of peas. It was all nicely cooked too. One of my friends had the cream tea which she enjoyed & another had a caramel topped fruit flapjack which, I'm told, was delicious. The food came out in good time & we were very happy with it.

A busy cafe which provides excellent lunch options - soup with sandwiches was a special and herb scones were also available. An excellent place to stop for lunch!

Excellent portion size -would highly recommend the ploughmans lunch in particular! Great selection of food including lunches, cakes, icecreams and loads of drinks. Lovely setting too just a stones throw away from Cathedral. Service was a little slow but I think that's just because they had loads of people wanting ice creams on a hot bank holiday weekend.

Right in the middle of town, it's a good place to sit and watch the world go by. Really good food, the jacket potatoes were huge and well filled with tasty toppings and the coffee is good too. Friendly staff and good menu choices. Inside or outside seating, this cafe was a great find.

Managed to get a seat outside in the sunshine. Coffee and scones were great. Wednesday and Saturday there's also a market right outside too. The cafe is very close to the cathedral and Bishops Palace gardens.

Discovered this cafe at lunchtime and went in to have a meal and to sample the tempting cakes & coffee. The cakes were delicious, I can particularly recommend the vegan cherry pie !! The meals also were beautifully prepared and very tasty. The staff were all lovely, even though, at lunchtime, the place was very busy & they were rushing to and fro with food.We will definitely be back when next in Wells.

Food was greasyspoon calibre. Can’t be a chef in the kitchen. Awful value for money. Nice staff. Clean enough. Typical tourist trap with no care for return custom.

Great little place to stop and enjoy a hot drink and cake or in our case a cream tea. Great value for money with a pot of tea, 2x scones, clotted cream and jam only £5. We also tried the apple pie which was rather yummy. Nice cosy atmosphere with friendly service.

Popped in with my 2 children for a quick bite. Kids wanted ice cream, and a waiter duly sorted out two cones. He then wandered off and started making coffee leaving me standing there, ignored, waiting to complete my order. A waitress then asks if I need help. I order two J20s, a coke and their "special" BLT made with a Bloomer loaf. A second waitress arrives with the J20s both opened, but, having failed to ask what flavour, not the orange ones my kids wanted. Not wanting to make a fuss I let that pass. However the weird service and incorrect items were nowhere near as awful as the BLT. It was not (and at just under £8 this is an issue) made with a bloomer loaf, but with slightly stale white sliced bread. Minimal or no butter had been used, and the tomatoes tasted refrigerated . No apology was offered for the bread.

Called in at 11am for a morning latte coffee and a sandwich. Alas breakfasts served until 11.30 and lunches with sandwiches/panini start at 12 noon with all the hot food so ended up with latte and a tea cake. We were promptly served even though it was busy (guess people wanted to get out of the rain), the table was clean. Plenty of tables but if disabled/ in a wheelchair there are 2 floors being departed by one step. Waitress service. Plenty of delicious cakes for consumption at a fair price. Icecreams too if you like. We would call in again when in the area.

Booked a table for family of five for Halloween Service was polite and friendly, didn’t have to wait too long for our order and the meals were all hot quantity & quality was amazing. We all had fish & chips but there are other options of things to eat. Definitely value for money and will definitely be returning again

Nice local business with delicious food. Had the Buddha bowl with loads of tasty veg and some chicken. Hummus and chickpeas made it enough that i didn’t need to eat for the rest of the day.

After months of closure, the Red Lion at Woolverton has reopened under new management. Dan the manager gave us a warm welcome and told us of his plans, as we were chatting the pub started to fill up, obviously word has started to spread of the wonderful welcome, excellent food and drinks, it’s well worth a visit

My daughter had her birthday Party there and it was so lovely. Very friendly host. Jordan is simply the best. The kids enjoyed their food, the pizzas were to die for and they had a swell time. F-Cooke is sure the best when it comes to hosting people. Friendly and lovely .
